Ignorant Because You Can Be

Being deaf, dumb or blind,

Are concepts that never cross your mind,

Having a disabled sister or friend,

Is something you've never bothered to comprehend,

Being bullied, disfigured or lonely you don't understand,

More preoccupied with work, going out, the latest band.

Of depression and schizophrenia you never let your mind ponder,

Neither about anorexia or poverty do you ever wonder,

Bipolar, cancer, losing a family member are alien experiences you find,

You're just lucky, that way inclined,

Just because you don't ever contemplate drug addicts or domestic abuse,

Doesn't mean you're a bad person, thick or obtuse.

To not enjoy being happy, healthy and carefree would make you a fool,

For the world can unexpectedly and devastatingly turn, be cruel,

The suffering of others you do observe and sense,

But you're ignorant because you can be,

Exploration of such ideas you may never have sought,

But just in case, it might be good to give them an occasional thought.
