twenty-two
"Someday, someday, yeah you'll blow us all away," Alexander softly sang, smiling down at baby Philip in his crib "Someday, someday..."
He carefully got up, watching out to stay silent, and blew out the candle by Philip's bedside. He silently made his way out of Philip's room and closed the door, before heading into his study, where he sat down at his desk and took a recent letter of John in his hands.
Alex missed Y/N. John was the only contact he had down in South Carolina, Y/N had been making herself busy with a lot of things, probably to get her mind off of the things that had happened to her just recently. He was worried about the safety of his sister. He hadn't planned on losing her right after getting her back.
"Alexander," Eliza softly spoke up behind him "There's a letter for you from South Carolina."
Alexander smiled and said "It's from John Laurens, I'll read it later." "No, it's not."
Alex froze, his smile slowly faltering as he turned around, looking at Eliza with a frown.
"Who is it from?", Alex asked, the answer making his blood run cold "General Gist."
This could only mean one thing. Y/N and John had to be injured, if not even worse - killed.
"General Gist?", he quietly asked, Eliza nodding with a sad look on her face, then Alex added "Will you read it?"
Eliza carefully pulled the letter out of the envelope and unfolded it, taking a deep breath, before beginning to read "On Tuesday the twenty-seventh, Lieutenant Jay Hamilton was shot and gravely wounded as the result of killing Prince Henry Frederick of Britain. He is still in the worst of conditions and we do not know how long he has left. Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens is with him in Beaufort and will remain there with him until Lieutenant Hamilton is either deemed fit enough to travel home or if he passed.
"We have no idea as to what Prince Henry has searched on the battlefield, but I shall inform you that this war is brought to another high without anyone knowing how it will go on. I doubt it is still considered as over.
"I send you my condolences considering your brother. If there is any news we have to tell, I shall inform you as soon as they come. Sincerely, General Mordecai Gist."
When Eliza finished, she looked at Alexander with worry written all over her face.
"Alexander are you alright?", she cautiously asked, folding the letter back together but not letting her eyes off of him. Alexander simply sat there and looked like he had seen a ghost, before he whispered "I'd like to have a moment..."
And without another word, Eliza left the room to leave Alexander to himself, knowing that she could do nothing to help him now.
Weeks passed and no news came. The war was still declared as over, even though the news of the death of Henry has spread like a wildfire and it wasn't long until, without a doubt, the whole world knew about it.
Alex was worried sick. One day he had been out for a walk with Eliza and Philip, when they returned to laughter echoing through their house. Alexander knew that Peggy and Angelica were there, but there were two laughters other from the two women. One of them was manly and the other was just barely a tone lighter than the one of the mans.
Alex's eyes widened and he sprinted into the living room, where he found them.
Peggy, Angelica, John and Y/N. All of them sitting on the couches and laughing together. The laughters died down though when Alex had entered the room and their attention had now turned to them.
Y/N went to stand up and immediately John jumped up from beside her and took her hands, carefully pulling her to her feet.
"Bastards got my spine. Can't really stand or walk on my own for long," Y/N explained to Alex with a weary smile. Alex just stood there in silence, before he burst into tears and rushed forward, wrapping his arms around Y/N in a tight but careful embrace.
Y/N chuckled softly and wrapped her arms around Alex, burying her face in his shoulder, unsuccessfully holding back tears of her own. She, too, hadn't thought they would see each other again, but here they were.
The twins stood there like that for a while, nobody saying a word, before Alex slowly pulled away and looked Y/N up and down, as if to check for further injuries, then looked back at her face.
"I killed him, Alex. I did it," Y/N whispered, another flow of tears blocking her sight and staining her cheeks wet.
Alex nodded and brushed a strand of her hair out of her face, laying a hand on her cheek and saying "I know. I'm proud of you, so damn proud."
Y/N giggled slightly and mumbled "I can finally get over him." Alex nodded with a smile "Yes, yes you can."
"Look Philip, that's your aunt!", Eliza softly said to the one and a half year old child, pointing at Y/N. Philip looked over into the direction his mother had pointed and stared at Y/N with wide, brown eyes.
Y/N smiled and cooed at the sight of the child, then looked at John. The two of them seemed to be able to communicate with their looks, as he came over and wrapped an arm around her waist, wanting to walk to Philip and Eliza, but Eliza shook her head and with a pointed look told Y/N to stay put.
Y/N watched as Eliza set little Philip down on the ground, the small child standing on wobbly feet, making Y/N coo one more in adoration. One look to John and he helped her kneel down on the ground, before he took his arm away and sat down beside her himself.
Y/N felt like crying once more when Philip waddled towards them with his half-secure steps, Eliza close behind him to catch him if he would fall. Y/N opened her arms a little and almost cried out in delight when Philip seemed to quicken his pace a little.
Finally Philip fell into his aunts arms and she cuddled him close, making the child laugh. Another tear rolled down her cheek and she looked up at Eliza and Alex, who stood arm in arm, and said "I can't guarantee you that I won't steal your child one day."
The people present in the room laughed.
"Look John, he has curls just like you!", Y/N exclaimed and picked Philip up under his arms, holding him up to show him to John.
John chuckled and smiled at Y/N "Yeah, he does." Y/N smiled brightly and pulled Philip close again, cuddling him, making him laugh once more. She felt like her heart was breaking, because she could not handle how cute this child was.
Memories of the future she could've had with her child, if it would have lived, came up, but she suppressed them.
She looked back up at John and the two of them smiled at each other.
"So, you two together now?", Alex asked, to which Eliza elbowed him in the ribs, the smile still on her lips.
A deep blush spread on John's and Y/N's cheeks and they looked at Alex with wide eyes, both of them saying instantly "No!"
Alex only grinned and shrugged "If you say so."
John and Y/N looked at each other and rolled their eyes at the same time, making the other grin. Then Y/N turned her attention back to Philip in her arms. And the way that John and Y/N sat there on the ground, close to each other, laughing and smiling together, one could've thought that they were a couple with their child.
"They do look like a couple though, admit it," Alex whispered to Eliza, to which she whispered back, still with her smile on, "They do. Now they just have to admit it to us."
Alex and Eliza grinned at each other and if either of the two childish adults on the ground would've looked at them, they would've seen the mischief in the glances of the married couple.
