It's been about two weeks ever since that incident.
John didn't seem to remember, but even if he did, he didn't mention it.
Slowly Jay got accepted into the little group that consisted of Mulligan and Laurens. At least, for the first time, the latter trusted Jay enough to let him come with them to the bar in the next town. Although nobody expected everything to go downhill from then.
They had just entered the town, all of them laughing at some stupid joke that Mulligan had just told, when a scowl formed on Mulligans and Laurens' faces. Jay frowned at them and was about to ask, when a voice called "Hear ye! Hear ye!"
Turning his attention to the voice, Jay came to see a priest who held something in his hands. A glow was in his eyes, he obviously enjoyed his job. Beside Jay, Mulligan grumbled "Not him again."
"My name is Samuel Seabury and I present to you the newest words of his excellency, King George III!", he announced. Momentarily, Jay froze. Mulligan and Laurens didn't notice, they had continued walking.
"I hereby announce that the search for my most dearest sister in law, Princess Y/N Frederick, widowed wife of my deceased brother Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany, be called off. The Princess and I have come to agree that she shall return on her own and be wed to Prince Henry, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn."
Jay felt all color drain his face. So he really accepted her offer. The search was off and he would have to return. His heart was beating so fast and his stomach churned at the thought of going back. Being bound to that family again.
"Hey, Edmunds, you okay?", Mulligan shook Jays shoulder, snapping the shorter soldier out of his thoughts. He gulped and blinked multiple times, before looking up at Mulligan and flashing a short smile "Yeah. Sorry, I zoned out a little."
Mulligan knew very well what was wrong, but he wouldn't say it out loud now, since Laurens didn't know and the crowd around them didn't have to know.
"I have to leave, now," Jay then quietly said, his gaze narrowing slightly. Mulligan nodded, before he got an idea and said "Let's head back, I have a plan."
Laurens frowned at this and asked "What do you mean, you have a plan? What's going on?"
Mulligan said nothing, neither did Jay, as they then began to head back to camp. Laurens sighed frustratedly and trudged along after them.
At camp, Jay immediately steered towards Washingtons camp. Of course, he politely waited to be bid in, before he stepped in, followed by Mulligan and a startled Laurens.
"Edmunds, Mulligan, Laurens, how can I help you?", Washington asked and Jay glanced at Laurens, before his gaze turned back to Washington and he said "He accepted my offer."
Washington knew immediately what Jay meant, while Laurens was still more than confused about the situation "May I finally get to know what the hell is going on?" Jay took a deep breath and said "I'm not who I pretend to be."
In an instant Laurens had his pistol pulled out and pointed it at Jays head, only to be pushed back by Mulligan who glared at the freckled male "Let the girl speak!"
Laurens froze, the angry look slowly fading into confusion, and slowly lowered his gun. He looked past Mulligan to where Jay stood. Jays gaze was fixed to nothing in particular and slowly realization hit Laurens.
Jays jaw was softer defined than any mans, her throat a little slimmer, her shoulders not as broad as a mans, her frame in general a little more fragile than a mans. Jay was a woman.
"My name is Y/N Frederick. I was born in the Caribbean, so I most definitely am not a born Brit. I was married to Edward, who I killed when we were on a trip to Genoa. I fled from the royal family three years ago and hid under the British troops the moment I heard that Henry wanted to marry me. I hid under the British until I came here. My aim always has been to get away from the British the moment I've been married to one. I decided I wanted to stay here until the war is over, I wanted to support the Americans and see Britain tumble.
"When I found out that George gave out the order to bring me back, no matter the cost, I only be alive, I answered with a compromise. That priest today announced for what I have hoped to happen but what I have also dreaded. I won't bother you much longer," Y/N said and looked down.
"I had the idea that you could send me out with her to Britain. Y/N can spy on the King and can give me the results she gets and I get those back here. I can stay there as moral support for her and also can gather stuff on my own there," Mulligan proposed.
Y/N frowned as she looked up at the spy. "No, I can't let you go there with me. You don't want to know what will happen if they find out we're working together against them," she protested.
"Don't worry, they won't find out," Mulligan said, but Y/N shook her head and said "I don't want to watch you die. You should station yourself under the British troops close to here, but whatever is going on in Britain is something I have to do on my own."
"So you're sacrificing yourself for the Americans?", Laurens quietly asked, a hint of regret in his eyes. Probably because he had been so stupid and been so awful towards her, when she really had tried to watch Britain fall and was a real part of them. Not Britain. She truly was American.
"Yes. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. I want to help tear the royal family apart. If it means for me to give myself up like this, then so be it," Y/N said and thought for a moment, before she added "I think I've been willing to give up my life like this from the moment I was married to Edward."
Washington looked from Laurens, to Mulligan and finally to the royal. Then he asked "When will you depart?"
"This evening."
