fourteen
John had no idea where else to bring Y/N, so he chose the closest option - their camp.
Y/N laid curled in his arms, occasional moans and wails of pain escaping her lips, her hands cramping slightly as she held her stomach. John didn't bother with the weight. As rude it might sound, he's carried heavier things. But the only thing that weighed Y/N down was the baby she carried inside her, otherwise she was almost nothing but skin and bones. Henry assumingely did everything but make sure she was okay.
The soldiers in camp stared as John and his men returned with the royal with them. John stormed towards the infirmary tent. Wounded soldiers stared confused the moment they saw Y/N, nurses paling when they almost in an instant realized Y/N was going through labor.
"Over here!", one called and motioned for John to come over to a bed. Two nurses made sure the bed was shielded from the view of others, pulling screens up, before they went to ready things for Y/N.
John carefully placed Y/N on the field bed, wincing slightly when another pained moan came from Y/N, a little worried that he hurt her.
Then, as a nurse was about to shush him out, a hand grabbed John's wrist and John thought it was about to break. He stared down at Y/N wide eyed, who managed to glance up at him and mouth a "Thank you", before another contraction grabbed her attention.
Her hand left his wrist and John rushed out, heading out to search for Alex. After all, he had to know his sister was here.
When John spotted Alex, the first scream came from the infirmary tent. Usually nobody would bother, but the fact that this was a female scream, a lot of the soldiers around winced, frowned or looked ready to storm the tent to see what was going on, only to be held back by two of the soldiers that had joined John.
"What the hell was that?", Alex asked, frowning at the pale, freckled male before him. "Alex, that just now was your sister. She's going through labor," John didn't even have the chance to finish, before Alex already ran to the infirmary tent.
Of course he was held back at first, but was let in after he told them it was his sister in there.
Alex froze at the first sight of his sister, before he rushed to her side and took her hand. Y/N managed to glance over at the man beside her, her breath hitching slightly as she recognized in an instant who stood there. After all, it was his face that she had stared at every day in the mirror.
"Al," Y/N murmured, before another scream left her lips, pain shooting through every vein. Her grasp on Alexander's hand tightened and said male beside her groaned. John wasn't the only one who had underestimated the strength of her grip, so it seemed.
By the time that her screams, wails and moans finally died down, Washington knew what was going on. The other soldiers did not, however. All they knew was, that a pregnant woman has been found being pursued by a redcoat and was now in labor.
The only sound filling the infirmary tent was Y/N's heavy breathing. She waited.
Waited for her child to cry.
But she didn't see the horror on the faces of the nurses. And she didn't hear the crying.
While her grip on Alexanders hand had loosened, his tightened a little. Y/N glanced up at him and found him staring towards the nurses with shock written all over his face. And when Y/N glanced over, she understood.
The baby that a nurse held had a deep dent in its head. Lifeless eyes stared at nothing.
Slowly Y/N pushed herself up into a sitting position, her eyes never leaving the child, her child. Deformed, limp, it laid there in the arms of a nurse. The limbs too small, the head dented, it hadn't even had the chance of life to begin with.
Y/N just continued to stare. Nobody moved or said a thing, every person present here watching her.
With a shaking hand, Y/N finally reached out towards her child, her heart racing. The nurse said nothing as she stepped forward, carefully placing the baby in Y/N's arms.
Two of the nurses retreated, Alex and the third nurse staying.
John rushed towards the two nurses as he saw them leave and was about to ask if everything was fine, but before he could open his mouth, the nurses only shook their heads, their horrified yet sad expressions telling everything.
John felt his heart drop. He had no idea what Y/N would be suffering through. How does one cope with the loss of their child?
Y/N held the baby close to her chest, staring down at it with so much love but so much sadness in her eyes, Alex felt like he was about to cry himself. He did nothing but stand aside for now, watching his sister cradle her child, when eventually her shoulders began to shake and a low sob was heard.
Tears finally freed themselves and ran down her cheeks as Y/N held her baby close to her. Her emotions were like a hurricane, love, sadness, horror, anger, all of those things clashing together. She couldn't control it, as she wept over her child.
After a while, the nurse gently pulled the baby from Y/N's arms. Alex sat beside her and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into his embrace. Y/N buried her face in his chest as she cried and sobbed and wept the loss of her baby - the only ray of light she would have had in this darkened world.
Alex kept running a hand up and down her back, trying to calm her. Helplessly trying to soothe his sister.
John felt his heart break at the sound of Y/N's weeping and then the sight of her child as the third nurse finally retreated from the secluded area. Y/N didn't deserve this.
He wanted to look for her, maybe try comfort her, but he knew Alex was there for her, so he turned and left the tent, searching for Washington to report.
And Y/N continued to weep even until there were no tears left to shed.
believe me when I tell you that I had to stop halfway through when her child was revealed. I couldn't continue writing in that moment, my heart just felt so heavy and I just stared at the screen for a good ten minutes before forcing myself to continue. I started crying, too. I'm so sorry, my heart still feels so unbelievably heavy of making you go through this. I know I could have chosen another way but it had to be like this. I'm sorry.
