"I recognise you. I went first. My name was Jacqueline Tyler."
— Cyberman, The Age of Steel
Penelope was shoved behind the Doctor, the tears drying on her face. First this woman, who was getting married, and now Mrs Moore - Angela Price.
"No! No, you didn't have to kill her!" The Cyberman scanned him.
"Sensors detect a binary vascular system. You are an unknown upgrade. You will be taken for analysis." The Cyberman turns to Penelope, who the Doctor was desperately trying to hide. "You will be taken for analysis."
They were taken quite a long way, led all the way to a control room. The Doctor seemed to be talking to himself, reassurance that everything would be fine. Penelope, on the other hand, thinks he's lost his mind.
"We've been captured, but don't worry, Rose and Pete are still out there. They can rescue us." The two were bought in by other set of Cybermen. "Oh well, never mind. You okay?"
"Yeah. But they got Jackie."
"We were too late. Lumic killed her."
"Then where is he, the famous Mister Lumic? Don't we get the chance to meet our Lord and Master?" The Cyberman turned to them, the monotone voice somehow sounding smug.
"He has been upgraded." The Doctor raised his eyebrows, he had been expecting this, but not so soon.
"So he's just like you?"
"He is superior. The Lumic Unit has been designated Cyber Controller." A door opens and a Cyberman is wheeled out in what looks like an upgraded wheelchair.
"This is The Age of Steel and I am its Creator." Penelope scoffed in disbelief, causing the Doctor to snap his head towards her.
"You're insane is what you are. You let them do that to you?" There were screams outside, sudden and afraid. Had Mickey done his job correctly? The Doctor smiled.
"That's my friends at work. Good boys! Mister Lumic, I think that's a vote for free will." Lumic's head tilted, unaffected.
"I have factories waiting on seven continents. If the ear pods have failed, then the Cybermen will take humanity by force. London has fallen. So shall the world." A camera starts to blink, Penelope nudges the Doctor and gestured over in the direction. He got a big smile on his face, he has an idea. He talked over Lumic.
"We need this to work, please stay safe and out of the way. I need his focus on me and not anyone else, and I know that will be hard, especially with that dress, but can you try." She sighs, blushing again.
"Stop bringing up the damn dress and go save the world." They tuned back in to Lumic's spiel, their conversation thankfully ignored.
"I will bring peace to the world. Everlasting peace and unity and uniformity."
"And imagination? What about that? The one thing that lead you here, imagination, you're killing it dead!"
"What is your name?"
"I'm the Doctor."
"A redundant title. Doctors need not exist. Cybermen never sicken." Penelope felt herself bristle, he really gets on her nerves.
"Yeah, but that's it. That's exactly the point! Oh, Lumic, you're a clever man. I'd call you a genius, except I'm in the room." He turned around to see Penelope covering her smile and took that as a win. "But everything you've invented, you did to fight your sickness. And that's brilliant. That is so human. But once you get rid of sickness and mortality, then what's there to strive for, eh? The Cybermen won't advance. You'll just stop. You'll stay like this forever. A metal Earth with metal men and metal thoughts, lacking the one thing that makes this planet so alive. People. Ordinary, stupid, brilliant people."
"You are proud of your emotions."
"Oh, yes."
"Then tell me, Doctor. Have you known grief, and rage, and pain?" There was a sudden darkness behind his eyes, one that Penelope hadn't seen before.
"Yes. Yes I have."
"And they hurt?"
"Oh, yes. But then I've also felt love and happiness, all from the little things. Like holding someone's hand, or the dress they wore." Penelope turned bright red again, smiling through her embarrassment, he really liked this dress.
"There is no need for such emotions. I could set you free. Would you not want that? A life without pain? Your love would die one day, you can escape that."
"You might as well kill me."
"Then I take that option." Penelope stood up straighter, but the Doctor looked over and she stopped, he knew what he was doing.
"It's not yours to take. You're a Cyber Controller. You don't control me or anything with blood in its heart."
"You have no means of stopping me. I have an army. A species of my own."
"You just don't get it, do you? An army's nothing. Because those ordinary people, they're the key. The most ordinary person could change the world." He turns and speaks to the camera with the flashing red light that Penelope had pointed out.
"Oh, Mickey." He heard her, and was impressed how early she had figured it out.
"Some ordinary man or woman, some idiot. All it takes is for him to find, say, the right numbers. Say the right codes. Say, for example, the code behind the emotional inhibitor. The code right in front of him. Because even an idiot knows how to use computers these days. Knows how to get past firewalls and passwords. Knows how to find something encrypted in the Lumic Family Database, under er. What was it, Pete? Binary what?
"B-Binary nine."
"An idiot could find that code. Cancellation code. And he'd keep on typing. Keep on fighting. Anything to save his friends.
"Your words are irrelevant."
"Yeah, talk too much, that's my problem. Lucky I got you that cheap tariff, Rose, for all our long chats. And we still need to get you a phone Penelope, remind me. So that we can have those conversations like we do on Rose's phone." He was smiling at her, and in those few seconds she knew it would all be okay. If he can smile like that at a time like this, everything is okay.
"You will be deleted." He turns back to Lumic, waving his arms around as if actually interested in what he said.
"Yes. Delete, control, hash. All those lovely buttons. Then, of course, my particular favourite, send. And let's not forget how you seduced all those ordinary people in the first place." Rose's phone beeps. Mickey has done it. "By making every bit of technology compatible with everything else."
"It's for you." Rose throws the phone over to him, The Doctor catching it and walking over to an open port in the console.
"Like this." He puts the phone into a docking station, thankfully it fits. The code is transmitted and the Cybermen cry out in pain. The code appears on every computer screen. Penelope can see one look at its reflection and she physically aches for them. There are explosions outside and Lumic looks entirely lost. Penelope finally walks over to the Doctor, taking his hand, he still wears the same ring as her.
"I'm sorry."
"What have you done?!"
"I gave them back their souls. They can see what you've done, Lumic, and it's killing them!" They could see Lumic physically shaking with rage, which was the cue for all of them to get out.
"Delete! Delete! Delete!"
They race up onto the roof, a phone call from Mickey had probably saved them all. They watched as Lumic's zeppelin made its way over to them. But there was an annoyed groan from Penelope as a rope ladder fell from it. They all looked at her.
"Hey, don't look at me like that. You would not believe the kind of comments I've been getting because of this dress and the ladders I've been on today." Rose turned to look at the Doctor, who had a dopey smile on his face again, before turning back and giving her friend a once over.
"You have got a nice arse Pen."
"Oh shut up Rose." The Doctor stepped between them, placing a hand on Penelope's lower back, guiding her to the ladder.
"Just for that, after you Penelope." She sighs and makes her way forward, taking a right hold of the ladder.
"You better be going after me Doctor."
"Always." She laughs and begins to pull herself up the ladder. She climbs up enough so that everyone else could get onto the ladder comfortably and Mickey could fly away. He was shouting something from the cockpit that no one could hear properly. Rose cheered from where she held onto the ladder below the Doctor.
"We did it! We did it!" She obviously jinxed it as something heavy pulled at the ladder, nearly making them lose their grip. It's Lumic, in all his Cyber glory. The Doctor gets the screwdriver out, handing it down to Rose who gets it to Pete.
"Pete! Use it! Hold the button down! Press it against the rope. Just do it!" Pete looks down at the Cyber Controller, holding the sonic against the ropes.
"Jackie Tyler. This is for her!" The rope finally gives way and Lumic falls. His screams were engulfed in the exploding Power Station as the group flew away in the zeppelin.
