"Well, that was fun, wasn't it?"
Airi blinked when she heard the voice, before turning to look at her partner with a small frown. "Fun is one word for it, but look at my shoes! My high heels are ruined, Kaito, not that you would ever understand," she said with a sigh, shaking her head as she stepped over a dead body to get out of the puddle of blood she was standing in.
"That's your fault, who the fuck goes on a mission wearing high heels? What do you think happens when you stab people, their blood just evaporates into thin air?" Her partner, Kaito asked incredulously, a scoff escaping his lips as the two of them walked out of the alley together, unbothered by the pile of bodies they were leaving behind.
"Oh, please, says the one wearing a suit and tie! What are we, Men in Black? At least I could stab people with my Jimmy Choos, are you going to smother someone to death with your suit jacket?" She snapped back, tossing her bubblegum pink hair over her shoulder as she looked up at the male next to her.
Kaito rolled his eyes when he heard the female, shoving his hands into the pocket of his pants. "This suit is Armani, but excuse me if my parents actually care what I wear. If you want to be a Board member then you have to dress like it, and all of that shit," he pointed out.
"I want to be a Board member, but you won't catch me dressing like an old lady in order to do it. Better to be true to myself in reaching my goals than trying to look like some queen from hundreds of years ago," Airi replied, scrunching her nose up in disgust.
"Yeah, yeah, you're a diva, we know," Kaito said with a sigh, the two of them making their way out of the alleyways and onto the main road. They seemed to blend in with the crowd, it was a busy time of day, so their tracks were easily covered as they made their way back down the block towards a tall office building.
Anyone who was familiar with the area knew that it was the headquarters for the Angeli Mortis. They were a global company that specialized in technology, selling computers, phones, tablets, you name it and their winged logo was on it. And while most people wondered why a tech company called themselves the Angels of Death, they dismissed the thought after a while.
If only they knew the truth.
"Ten bucks says that your parents are fucking in your dad's office."
Airi was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard her best friend's cheeky comment, glancing up at him as they stepped into the elevator. "That isn't even a bet worth taking, since we both know that's exactly what they're doing," she replied, shaking her head at him.
"Well, at least your parents actually love each other. Better than the alternative," Kaito grumbled bitterly, his eyes darkening slightly at the thought of his own family situation.
She was quiet for a moment, before she sighed and stepped towards him, reaching up to fix his tie. "You know you're welcome to stay with me whenever your dad gives you a hard time for something," she murmured, reluctantly stepping away from him when the elevator doors opened.
Kaito gave her a small smile in return, running his fingers through his own dark hair as they walked down the long corridor together. "Thanks, Ai," he replied quietly, though his gaze hardened when they finally arrived at the mahogany double doors at the end of the hall. Airi paused outside of the door, her gaze flickering over the golden nameplate.
"I like this nameplate a lot better, I'm glad he took my suggestion," she said honestly, before she knocked on the door a handful of times. "Dad! Kaito and I are out here, so can you and mom please put some clothes on before we come in?" She called warily, turning to her partner and rolling her eyes dramatically.
The door opened by itself as soon as her voice was heard, and the temperature around them seemed to drop a few degrees, enough for the average person to become nervous before they stepped into the office. Alas, Airi Nakahara was not the average person. It was hard to be average when you and your best friend were the children of the co-presidents of one of the largest companies in the world.
"Contrary to what everyone here thinks, I do have other people in my office other than your mother, and we actually do work here," Her father, Rin, said dryly, though his affectionate smile never wavered as his gaze landed on his daughter.
"You honestly could have fooled me, President Nakamura. And hello to you too, President Onishi," Airi teased with a sweet smile, giving her father and his partner a sweet smile as she stepped into her father's office. Kaito had to hold in the urge to roll his eyes in the presence of his own father, following the female inside.
Rin simply rolled his eyes, leaning back in his office chair as he watched the two of them step in front of their office. "You're sure that nobody spotted you? You killed everyone?" He asked warily, tapping his pen against his desk.
Airi and Kaito both nodded, though the former wasted no time in selecting a lollipop from her father's candy jar, unwrapping it and sticking it in her mouth to give it a lick before she spoke. "Kaito used his gift to keep us both invisible the entire time, and I used mine to make sure nobody else was coming. They didn't even see us coming, let alone anyone else. It was a piece of cake, dad, I keep telling you we can handle bigger assignments," she pointed out, annoyance clear in her tone.
"And we keep telling you that we can't give you any bigger assignments until you're real Board members. The annual meeting is in a few months, the two of you need to be working on perfecting every bit of your skills. And not just your killing and torturing skills, but your presence, your acting. You have to act as if being a shareholder in a tech company is your full time job, and be prepared to deal with cameras and questions from the press," Daisuke said, giving his son, Kaito, a meaningful look.
"Kai and I are great actors, and the press is going to love us regardless of how we dress, just for who our parents are. And how filthy rich we are with all of that blood money. I mean, money that we earn with our legal technology company," Airi said sarcastically, giving her father's partner a look right back as she crossed her arms over her chest.
Rin shook his head at his daughter, clearing his throat so she and Dazai would stop going at each other. "While I am fully aware of how skilled and talented you both are in all areas of your life, you can always be better. Nobody is perfect, but you need to get as close to it as possible if you want to be on the Board," he said sternly, looking between the two teenagers with a small frown.
Kaito nodded immediately, ignoring the small pout on Airi's lips as he lowered his gaze obediently. "You're both right, of course. Airi and I had better get to typing our reports, and then we'll go back to training. We'll see you both later," he said quickly with a fake smile, grabbing Airi's arm and nearly yanking her up with him, very aware of the glare that she was giving him. She didn't fight her partner, but she did make sure to grab another piece of candy on her way out, exasperation visible on her face.
"Are you ever going to learn to control that mouth of yours? That was totally unnecessary, you know my dad already doesn't like you! Do you want him to make our lives more difficult?" Kaito hissed at her, shaking his head disapprovingly as he finally let go of her once they were in the hallway.
Airi scowled up at her partner, crossing her arms over her chest. "He is going to make my life more difficult regardless! He hates me, Kaito, ever since you-know-what happened, and nothing I do is going to change that!" She exclaimed frustratedly, shaking her head at him.
"Regardless, you talking back to him is going to make it impossible for us to win him over, or any of the other Board members! And they all have to be in agreement in order for us to be appointed," He snapped, glaring down at her.
Airi kept her eyes locked on his for a few moments before she finally looked away, running her fingers through her hair tiredly. "You're right, of course, I'm just not good at controlling my temper," she said with a sigh.
"Yeah, well, tell me something that I don't know," Kaito replied sarcastically, though he couldn't hide the faint smile forming on his lips. He could never stay mad at his partner for too long, not after having grown up together. "Now come on, let's actually go get our work done so that way we can enjoy tonight. Or did you forget what day it is?"
She couldn't help her smile when she heard him, the two of them starting to walk back down the hallway together. "Of course I remember. It's the first Friday of the month, which is always our going out night," she said, twirling a strand of her long, pink hair as she gazed up at him.
"Exactly. And you take forever to get ready, so finish your work fast so you don't make us late," he said with an eye roll, waiting in front of the elevator with her as he leaned against the wall.
Airi rolled her eyes right back at him, shaking her head. "I can't help it if some of us have to always look our best when we go out. You could wear a trash bag and the paparazzi would still love you. If they ever caught me looking less than my best, my face would be everywhere and they would be mocking me," she pointed out, stepping into the elevator with him when the doors opened.
"There's that double standard, but you're also harder on yourself than anyone else is. You are the most fashionable person I know, the tabloids just have nothing better to talk about than you. Just don't overthink it too much when you're getting ready, alright?" He said, his tone noticeably gentler as he gave her a small smile. Airi managed a small smile in return, he was right, of course he was right. He knew everything about her, they had grown up together, though she had never told him how much he meant to her.
But he really did mean so much to her, and words like that only emphasized that fact.
"I'll see you tonight at the usual time in the lobby," she replied simply, giving him a small wave before she stepped out of the elevator, very aware of the slight blush on her cheeks as she walked away from him and towards her office for work.
