A Battle of Heaven & Hell
The reckoning has come. Angels versus demons, a battle waging for centuries.
You were in the common room with all of the ghouls, just playing your instruments and practicing, "Hey Swiss" Sodo called, putting his guitar down, "Yeah?" He looked up from his acoustic guitar, "Wanna make a bet?" Sodo only made bets when he was bored and they mainly ended in some sort of damage to the church or Swiss, so this could not be a good idea. Swiss pondered over the question for a while, "Alright. What is it?" He placed the instrument back in its case, "I bet you won't go up to Mountain and tell him he's playing Kaisarion wrong every time then try to correct him." Sodo smirked knowing that although Swiss was a multi ghoul, he wasn't the best at playing drums and Mountain would cry the instant he felt like a failure. Swiss tried to keep a straight face, but he couldn't, "Dude. That's cold." Sodo put his guitar in its case, locked it, and stood up, "Well then. I win. Night guys!" Sodo announced to the room. He was given a mix of 'night' and 'see ya' from the focused ghouls. You stopped playing your bass, "Night Sodo. Do you want someone to walk you back?" You started to put your bass down, "No no it's okay y/n don't worry I'll be fine" He smiled and waved off your kind gesture, "No Sodo I insist." You fully stand and walk beside him.
Since Primo let you know that war with the Angels was on the horizon you've been paranoid. The thought of all your friends dying in battle and the images that came with it gave you nightmares for the past few months. You were not a ghoul, so you had to go through a training process when first being inducted into the church. You learned how to use a knife, shoot a gun, and martial arts. You keep two daggers stored on your thighs. They are thin, gold plated and embellished with your birthstone. They were gifts from Nihil for passing the battle tests in the top of your class. It was an honor to receive, but a burden to carry. Your job at the ministry was security...originally. Until one day when Rain caught you playing his bass in the common room and convinced you to perform for the band. Since then, you've become their personal security and travel with the band. Your training had also promoted you to the front lines of battle. You were to be the first person on the battlefield at the ring of the bells. The church would have monthly drills with the bells to ensure that everyone understood their position for battle.
You and Sodo walked back to his room in mainly comfortable silence, "Y/n?" Sodo asked, stopping in front of his door, "Yes?" You urge him to continue, "Why have you been acting so...protective?" You couldn't tell him the top secret information Primo gave you, so you lied, "I'm up for a promotion, so I have eyes watching me constantly. I need to prove that I'm a good guard" Sodo tilted his head, "I know you are lying but I'm too tired to push, goodnight y/n." And with a quick nod you turned back down the hallway to the common room.
Walking through the halls felt heavy. The air was thicker than normal, the smells of old stone were covered with the overwhelming stench of must. It felt as if the walls had eyes, you could feel the pressure of thousands watching your next move, waiting for your call. The pit in your stomach tightened. You could sense something was off. The grandfather clock read 10:30 pm. Although the hour was late, you knew that Primo would be in his office. You swallowed your pride and your, "I can handle everything" mentality and walked to his door.
There were only a few siblings of sin and ghouls out, You passed them with a nod. You pound three times on the wood, something only you were allowed to do. The door swung open. You quickly stepped in and locked the door. You did a visual scan of the room then looked at Primo with a slight bow, "Y/n? What brings you in at this hour?" He asked placing the paper he was reading down and taking off his reading glasses, "I can't get what you told me out of my head" you walk up to his desk and sit in the adjacent seat to his large golden one, "I just keep feeling like I'm here is going to be a war soon. I feel eyes watching me from above, I feel the tension of the universe in the air, and I've had these terrible nightmares seeing the ghouls dead. I keep seeing me running towards Sunshine as an angel chases after her, she screams my name and reaches for me but I'm too slow and her head gets sliced off. What does any of this mean?" He looked shocked at the information you gave him and right as he opened his mouth to respond, the battle cry rang out.
You both stiffened and looked at eachother. Your training could not prepare you for this moment, but you knew you would fight like hell to protect these people, "I'm sorry my Papa, I must fulfill my duty." You stood and ran out of the room before he could say anything else.
The hallways were crammed with people rushing for their battle positions. All were moving away from the main doors, you on the other hand, charged through the crowds daggers in hand. You notice certain warriors from your training with a nervous expression, they would look to you for your reaction. You kept your face stone cold, serious, and determined. The entire clergy looks at you for your leadership and if they find you in a state of panic, the church will collapse.
You finally made it out of the crowds and were in the foyer of the front doors. Only one other person was there, Sodo. Sodo, being a fire ghoul, had heightened strength and battle skills. He was your second in command, but you never fully trusted that he was on guard constantly, "Hello again." He nodded with a smile, "Is now a time to be smiling?" You smirk back, humored by his attitude, "Well, if we are going to die, then yes. I would like my last memories of you to be positive." Your strong facade cracked and you threw yourself at Sodo. He stumbled back a little in shock at your reaction, but he caved into your embrace and squeezed you to his chest. After a moment, the bells rung again, and you separate, "Til we meet again" You bow your head as a final goodbye and push open the doors.
Angels flew down from the now brightly lit sky, golden swords drawn, their beauty in their human forms was striking, but the rage and anger radiating off their heavenly personas would not charm you. The stench of the heavens filled the air, screams and cries were ringing over the acres of land surrounding the church. The numbers between Angels and Demons seemed to be even, a fair fight was on the cards. You draw the daggers given to you long ago, and run towards the battlefields.
Siblings of Sin and Ghouls were littered around the battlefield fighting their own angels, you scan to see who was in dire need of assistance. To the right, you saw Aether struggling with two angels; trying to slit his throat with a golden dagger, his hands were trying to push the blade away, he was failing.
You quickly sprint over and raise the daggers above your head and plunge the blade through the neck of the one about to attack him from behind, you then slam your body into the angel on top of him. You feel the heavenly blade sting your left side, but you do not pause this attack for anything. You straddle the angel's hips, pinning its wings down with your knees, your left hand holding its two fists above its head. You smirk knowing you won. You lean over the angel and whisper into its ear, "Hail Satan" And slit its throat with the blade in your right. The sickening heavenly creature's blood squirted onto your face and clothes. You quickly stand and help Aether up, "Y/N? Oh my Satan, thank you." He panted, still trying to catch his breath, "No problem, come on, keep going" You pat his back and catch a glance of Rain getting dangerously fatigued against another angel. Aether busied himself with helping another Ghoul as you ran over to aid the water one.
"Rain!" You shout to get his attention, he glances over for a second before nodding in understanding. Rain grabs the angel's left arm with his right, and kicks the back of their knee causing the creature to fall. You reach the pair just in time to sneak behind the angel's back and slit its throat. Rain nods at you, exasperated you say, "Catch your breath. Quick. It's going to be a long battle." He nods and runs off, you look over your shoulder to keep looking to aid and you see Swiss wielding his two katanas.
A group of angels teamed up around him. You run over to him, jumping over bodies of ghouls and angels, some dead, some gravely injured. Swiss cuts down two of them, but one moves too quickly for him to react, stabbing him in the back. Swiss screamed in pain at the searing knife of holy metal that was gauged into his muscles, you quickly stabbed the angel in the back and continued to protect Swiss. He stayed on the ground, barely moving to try and keep his heart rate slow and controlled. You dodge, growl, and take hit after hit defending Swiss. One last angel stood, and you made quick work with its body. It wielded a spear, you simply grabbed the long handle, snatched it from its hands, then stabbed it in the heart with its own weapon. You take a breath then wave down a medic, as the sister ran to you, you kneel to Swiss, "Swiss, can you hear me?" He simply nodded slowly, "I'm trying to...ugh" He winced in pain, "Stay calm" You pet his head, he purred slightly, "I love you Swiss, you will be fine" You quickly mumbled as the sisters began to tend to the wounded demon, he whimpered in response. You rise and have a deja vu flashback of Sunshine's demise. You stumble from the quick nauseous feeling, but quickly recover to look for the ghoulette.
Running through the battlefield was jarring. More and more bodies of your clergy littered the grass, but there were far more heavenly demons than your own, you recognized some from training camp, but you could not grieve now. You stab as you go, quickly trying to kill as many intruders as you can while still searching for Sunshine. The battle died down, many angels retreated and injured ghouls were taken away from the now depleted front line. The adrenaline pumping through your veins kept your exhaustion to a minimum. Eventually, you see the small ghoul trying to defend herself from a much larger angel, she was covered in blood with a terrified look on her face. The angel's shoulders rose and fell, laughing at her pitiful state before raising his sword. You were still a few feet away, but that image of her death pushes you to quicken your pace. Being only a few inches behind the heavenly creature, you quickly side step to be in front and grab the hilt of his sword that divided the two of you. You raise your right hand and stab into his chest and stomach several times. Its body tenses and relaxes, you push his now limp frame backwards turning to check on Sunshine. She was holding her side whimpering, "Y/N...Y/N..." She was breathing heavily watching the blood gush out of several wounds, "Shhh...Sunshine you need to relax stop breathing so hard" You kneel by her and pull her into your lap, "HELP MEDIC" You scream in the direction of the medical station, several nurses flooded out, "Only a few more seconds Sunshine, you will be okay" You gently stroke her cheek and she leans into the comfort. When the nurses came over, you stood and backed away. The battle was over
You see one ghoul sprawled out in the grass in the distance. You barely recognize the ghoul, but it is Mountain, you run as fast as you can screaming his name, his chest stays still, his limbs relaxed. As you neared the body you saw the blood. Tears started to sting your eyes, you kneel to check for a pulse on the drummer, you find one, you breathe a sigh of relief, "MEDIC" You scream pulling off Mountain's mask, his eyes open slowly, "Y/N?" he whispers, "Yes, it's me, you'll be okay, you'll be okay" You held back your tears to stay strong for him. His uniform was soaked in blood, both angels and his own. His shallow breaths were interrupted by a groan, "Y/N, it hurts." You hold him closer, "I know, I know" You start to run your hand through his hair, he purred softly. The medics were coming, you could see their outlines in the distance, "Y/N" Mountain grimace, gripping the harm that wrapped around his waist that held him to you, "Please, I know you haven't done it since then, but please, I don't have much time, please" You knew what he wanted you to do. He overheard you singing one night in the practice room. He was having bad anxiety and your singing calmed him so he snuck into the room and listened. His favorite song was Elizabeth, "Only for you." You sing the chorus of the old song, he quietly sings with you while gripping your arm to cope with the pain. The medics came right at the end of the chorus, he had gone limp. His breathing stopped. He had no heartbeat. He was dead. You screamed at the realization and held him closer, you cursed God, you cursed Satan, you cursed everyone. A barely wounded Cumulus ran over to you, prying you off of Mountain. You wipe your tears and try to compose yourself. Cumulus said something in a panic that you couldn't make out, but she grabbed your hand and you both ran to the other side of the church.
A new swarm of angels flew down and surrounded a group of two siblings of sin, one male, one female. Cumulus and you quickly ran into the circle, it was four to six. The siblings of sin you were with were highly skilled, they cut down three while you handled two and Cumulus fought with one. While you were tied up with one of the angels, the other stabbed you in the back, the second stabbing into your stomach. You screamed and Cumulus, just finishing off her attacker, quickly killed both of the angels. She caught you in her arms and all went dark.
Cumulus screamed and several ghouls ran over including a bandaged Aether, Sodo, and Cirrus. Sodo tore off the bandages that covered his cuts and began to hold the cloth over your wounds. Aether did the same. Cirrus held the clearly scared Cumulus as she cried and shook in her arms. Eventually, the ghoulettes left to seek medical attention back at the church. More medics ran over to you casting spells, sewing, and resuscitating. Your heartbeat came back, but it was weak. Quickly, Aether picked you up bridal style and the two ghoul sprinted back to the medic wing of the church.
Rows and rows of clergy members laid in makeshift cots lined the walls. Since you had a higher stance in the church, Aether was directed to place you in a private room where Secundo and Primo were being bandaged. Both of the Papa's snapped their attention to your limp body as Aether gently placed you down. He took a quick look at you, while Sodo bowed his head to try and erase the bloodied image of you laying on the white cot. Both ghouls left the room to let the head nurses work on you.
...
"Satan. I can't believe they took that hit for me."
"They saved Mountain's life! If his heartbeat wasn't so slow he would have bled out"
"They fought so bravely, they saved so many people. How can Satan let heroes die?"
"He has and continues to, but y/n is a legend. Legends never die."
"Uhhh guys?"
"Yeah?"
"What?"
"Is that monitor supposed to be beeping?"
"UNHOLY SHIT! CUMULUS GET A NURSE"
"What the fuck?"
"Isn't that the heart monitor?"
"Yeah, yeah that...are they..."
"Y/N?! Y/n? Open your eyes come on, open them if you can hear me"
Your eyes flutter open to a room of gasps, shocked stares, and tears. You felt someone grab your left hand, your head turned to see who it was, it was Sodo. He was crying into your hand that now rested on his cheek. Aether placed his hand on his shoulder as a sign of solidarity and smiled at you. You knew talking was not an option, so you squeezed Sodo's hand, he quickly, but gently wrapped his hands around your waist and hugged you, you weakly placed your arms around him, you also started to cry at his disheveled demeanor. The cocky, annoying, but funny spitfire was a mess, his uniform not perfect, his mask off, his hair tossed up in a bun, bandages bloody. You just held each other as a sign of victory, happiness, and relief. The Church of Emeritus rose over the Heavens, the tale of a battle that will live in infamy.
