Chapter 1

It was the year 1921 in New York City. After World War One ended, many people decided to take the end of the war as an opportunity to improve and start anew. Feliciano Vargas planned just that.

Off the coast of Ellis Island, there was an average sized steam powered boat cruising along the murky waters surrounding it. This boat held many Italian immigrants hoping for a new life in America. Italian immigrants who were trying to escape the growing fascism in Italy.

The immigrants sat on the boat solemnly. Most of them were worrying about not being able to speak the language. Some worried about not being able to find work, while a small group of others wondered if it was worth leaving everything behind in their beloved old country. These thoughts never crossed Feliciano's mind.

The young Italian man stood at the front of the boat, the sea breeze running through his light brown hair. His caramel eyes were filled with wonder as he looked ahead to the mainland. A smile was spread across his face as he peered out to the distance.

"Isn't this great fratello?" Feliciano called out to his older brother, Lovino.

"We are not going to stay here forever Feli," said Lovino with his hazel eyes glaring at their destination, "Once Italy is better and they get their act together, we're going back."

In Italy, Feliciano was remembered as the boy who lost his mother at a young age. The boy who was the weaker of the two brothers. The boy who's grandfather died a hero. The boy who was constantly picked on for being the way he was. Going back to Italy would mean going back to the Feliciano that everyone knew, but not the one that he wanted to be.

"But think of all we could do!" Feliciano exclaimed hoping to change his brother's mind. "We could start new lives! We can do anything we put our minds to!"

"Feliciano, that is the hope of a child!" Lovino said scoffing at his brother's hopes, "Our real home is in Italy, with our friends, our family..."

"What family?" Feli questioned and looked at his brother, the smile fading from his face. "Grandpa died and Mama has been dead for a long time. We only have each other, so let's make the most of this."

"Feli, what if what you hope for isn't true?" Lovi replied solemnly, "What if it isn't all you dreamed it would be? Italy is our home. This place will never be."

"Then let's make it our home!" Feli beamed and turned towards his brother. "Besides, it's all that we've got right now."

Lovino rolled his eyes at Feli. "Fine," he sighed and leaned on the railing outlining the perimiter of the deck; arms folded as his hazel eyes stared at the murky waters.

Feliciano was overjoyed about all the wonders and mysteries that could be hidden in New York. He looked up at the gigantic green lady who stood up proudly with a tablet with one hand and a torch in the other. To others, it was just a statue, but to him, it was a beacon of hope, shining brightly to all who needed it.

He began to wonder how life would be in this new nation as the boat gently came to a stop at Ellis Island. Loads of people began to file out of the boat all crammed together like cattle.

"Come on Feli," said Lovino dully as he started walking to the exiting platform. "We're here, and Romeo is probably waiting for us."

Feliciano eagerly followed his brother closely. He didn't want to lose him in the first few minutes of getting off the boat!

Feli hesitated to get off the platform. This was it. There was no turning back. This was the start of something new. Here he could...

"Feli! Get of the damn boat! We don't have all day!" Lovino said as he waited impatiently for his brother.

"Scusa," Feliciano quickly replied. He almost leaped off the boat with excitement.

Lovino grabbed Feli roughly and pulled him by his arm and said, "Since you were so slow to get off the damn boat, now we have to rush to the line."

The line was long, as expected. This gave Feli time to wonder what life would be like in this country. Meanwhile, there was already a certain German man who was living the "American Dream" already.

The blonde man was preparing for a long day at work. What was his job exactly? He was a construction worker.

"Ludwig, you're leaving already?" Asked his albino older brother, Gilbert.

"Well, that's what happens when you have a job," Ludwig replied calmly as he laced up his boots.

"Ouch little brother! That stings!" Gilbert replied jokingly. "You won't be saying that on the day I finally make it big!!"

Ludwig rolled his eyes. Gilbert was currently unemployed. He had quit his last job at the factory because it "interfered with his music career." Last month, he was evicted from his apartment, so Gilbert decided to move in with Ludwig.

"Alright, Gil, I'm going to go," he said as he grabbed his lunch. "I'll be back at the same time as usual."

As Ludwig headed for the door, Gilbert chimed with a high pitched voice, "Bye sweetie!! Have a lovely day!!! Be prepared to have a nice supper when you get back!!!"

Ludwig rolled his eyes and turned to his brother. "How long are you going to be doing this?"

"Until you find a nice wife," Gilbert replied.

"I have no time for the ridiculous adventure of love. There's work to be done and money to be made," the younger said for what felt like the 100th time.

"Until then," replied the elder as he cleared his throat, "Farewell my darling." He batted his eyelashes and waved with finesse.

"Mien Gott," Ludwig scoffed and head out the door. Why must his brother always say ridiculous things? Surely, he would never have time for love, or so he thought.
