Chapter 8
Magicians were always entertaining to Mabel. The sense of magic in the good and corniness of the bad could always put a smile on her face. But now, she loved watching magic shows; they gave her the sense of "That was good, but can you do THIS?" Even if it was in her head.
But Gideon, that was a magician she never wanted to see again. He did everything to hurt them, and gave them the scare of the summer. The twins nearly died at his hands, and thought he was after them for their blood, not the books. Thankfully, that was proven false.
And Bill...that was a whole other topic she wanted to avoid. He was over and done with, that's all that matters. At least, she hoped he was.
As Gideon's screams from the back of the police car faded, the twins sighed in relief. The two smiled at each other before bursting into a laughing fit. Gruncle Stan joined them, hoisting the tweens onto his shoulders. The family celebrated together, though for different reasons. Their secret was safe, as it always was.
Once the Mystery Shack had started up again, Dipper and Mabel relished their comfort and safe spot as once before. They laughed hard and played harder. At least, to everyone else.
It was their first night back, after Stan had gone to bed, when Dipper started inspecting the journal closer than ever. Mabel practiced harder, determined to be more ready if the next attack came. When his head hurt, Dipper would watch her to make notes of what to do.
Neither of them had summoned their weapons yet.
"Do you think we should tell him?", Mabel asked after finishing a practice. "Tell him...what?", her brother asked, looking away from his papers. "You know, about us. What we really-"
"No.", he stated firmly. "Remember what Steven wrote? He might say something accidentally." Mabel sighed, looking at the ground. "I just don't feel comfortable, keeping all these secrets.", the girl admitted. "Can we at least tell him something about the town?"
"You mean, share the journal?", the boy asked with a raised eyebrow. His sister nodded after a moment. "Yeah. I mean, he's seen some of the stuff we have. He deserves to know that.", she explained.
Dipper nodded in agreement, staring at the six-fingered hand. "Alright. We'll tell him tomorrow.", he decided. Mabel smiled, sighing as if a weight has been lifted off her shoulders. A girl like her doesn't understand why people can't be more...no wait she learned that lesson with the teeth.
The sibling smiled with her, happy to share the mysteries of the town with anyone. They chuckled and put their stuff up, ready for bed.
The conversation that next evening did not have the response that Dipper was hoping for. "But...but...", he stammered, watching the man walk out with the journal. Mabel got up and patted his shoulder, giving a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry, bro-bro. I'm sure things will work out fine."
