CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE, zombie warriors

"Phil's new garlic falafel balls are disgusting." Jack commented when the gang were at Falafel Phil's one day. Kate sat next to Jack in the booth across from Jerry and Milton. Kim and Ashton sat in chairs across from each other.

"Surprising considering the cook is a goat." Kim sarcastically spoke.

"You'd think by now this place would be shut down because of that." Kate shrugged.

"Yeah, I know. These are awful." Jerry chimed in, his mouth full of food.

Jack furrows his eyebrows. "Then why do you keep eating them?"

"Mm, 'cause now I can do this..." Jerry's voice trailed off before he burped loudly, causing his friends to all grimace.

"It's gross, but you gotta admit," Milton speaks up. "The man's an artist."

"Yeah, true." Ashton agrees. "That's impressive."

"So, are you guys coming with us to see a movie tomorrow? It's playing at the mall." Jack said, glancing at the girls.

The girls share a confused look. "What movie?" Kim asked.

"Only the best monster movie ever made." Milton grins. He unzips his jacket, then unbuttons his flannel shirt to reveal a 'Attack of the Killer Zompyres' shirt. "'Attack of the Killer Zompyres'!" He explained with a hiss.

"They're half zombie-" Jerry started, interrupted by Jack.

"Half vampire."

"And all lame." Kim remarks, earning a snicker from Kate. "If you guys wanna see a good movie, go see 'The Horse Tamer'. It's a romantic story about a muscular 19-year-old boy, who sells his last shirt to save a crippled horse."

"Wait, I've seen that one." Kate admits with a small smile. "It's sweet."

"Just hearing those words make me feel like less of a man." Jack admits, wincing when Kate elbowed his side. "What?" He defended.

Kate rolled her eyes at her boyfriend, but she leaned into him when he wrapped his arm around her waist.

Jack and Kate's relationship has been going well for the last few weeks. Everything has been going well with them and the fights they do have they could always get through together. She loves him and she knows that he feels the same. Her heart fluttered at feeling his hand on her hip, his thumb rubbing small circles. When they first started dating, she was a bit shy and awkward when they displayed affection in public, but it was just like before. Just more kissing and touching. She's getting used to it and doesn't mind it anymore. She actually really likes it.

Kate's thoughts were interrupted when the boys started talking again.

"Hey, that movie is a great one!" Ashton defended the movie, earning surprised looks from the boys.

"You actually saw it?" Jerry laughed.

"And I might've cried, but it was great." Ashton shrugged, leaning back in his chair.

"Guys, come see 'Zompyres' with us. It'll be fun." Jack encouraged.

"I'm gonna pass. You guys know I hate horror movies." Kate reminded everyone, shuddering as she thinks about the last horror movie she had seen. She could barely sleep for a week because she would have nightmares about the movie.

"Exactly, just another excuse for me to protect you." Jack grinned, teasing lightly as he wrapped his arm around his girlfriend, who smiled and blushed a little.

"Okay, fine, I'll go, but if I can't sleep for the next week, it's your fault." She warned her boyfriend, who only smirked and kissed her forehead.

"Don't worry, Rina. I'll keep you safe." He winked, earning a giggle from Kate. She couldn't help the blush rising on her cheeks and the fluttery feeling in her stomach.

"So, Kim, Kate's in, what about you? You wanna join us?" Ashton asked the blonde, looking hopeful. Kate sighed when he gave her his puppy dog eyes. He knew she couldn't resist those.

Kim glances at Ashton, then looked away, biting her lip as she hoped her blush wasn't visible. "Okay, fine." She gave in.

"Yes!" Ashton cheers, fist bumping the air and he leaned over to kiss her cheek. "We can go together, if you want." He suggested, earning a smile from Kim.

"Sounds like a plan." She shrugged.

"Hey, guys." Eddie greets, walking over to his friends. "You know what my new Explorer Scout patch means?" He asked, pulling up a chair to sit by Ashton.

"You crossed the street by yourself?" Jack guessed.

"You threw out your nightlight?" Jerry chimed in.

"You peed in the woods?" Milton asked.

"No, no. And that's one of your business." Eddie replies, pointing at the three of them. "What it means is I'm leader of my troop."

Jerry looks at him with confusion. "Aren't you the only one in your-"

"Leader of my troop!" Eddie interrupts. "My scout master says I'm brave, bold and fearless."

"Great!" Jack smiles. "So you're coming with us to see 'Zompyres' with us?"

Eddie stares at him as if he was crazy. "Are you nuts? I looked at the commercial for that thing and I spent two days hiding in my mother's hamper."

"Yo, Eddie. Check this out." Jerry said and takes a bite out of a falafel ball. He had planned to let out a big burp, but instead his stomach gurgles and he grimaces. "Uh oh. Oh, it's going the wrong way." He then gets up and went over to Phill. "Yo, Phil. Phil! I need the key! Key to the bathroom now!"

"Oh, oh, okay. Let's see, uh..." Phil pulls out his ring of keys. "This one? No, that's-woah!" Jerry then grabbed the keys, pulling it with him as he ran to the bathroom. He ended up pulling Phil too since the key ring had a chain on it hooked to Phil's pants.

At school the next day, Kate is sitting on a bench near where Jack and Jerry stood. Jerry was practicing saying what he would say to ask out Katie, this girl he has liked since kindergarten.

"We've known each other for a while now and I feel a spark between us. And when I look into your eyes, I can tell you feel the exact same..." Jerry takes a dramatic pause, looking down before looking up with a smug look. "Way."

Jack grimaces along with Kate. "Not buying it." Jack said, shaking his head.

"Me neither." Kate agreed and Jerry groaned.

"When you say 'spark between us' you gotta be breathy." Jack then stares off into space and inhales before dramatically saying, "Spark between us."

"Ooh. That's good." Jerry grins. "Do that again."

"No." Jack shakes his head. "Why are you so nervous about tasking Katie out anyway?"

Jerry sighs. "Dude, I've had a crush on her since we finger painted in kindergarten. I was using blue. She was using yellow. Together we made green, Jack. Green!" He glances at the couple. "Didn't you guys feel this nervous when you two got together?"

"Oh, yeah." Kate nods, speaking the same time as Jack did. "Of course."

"But," Kate continues. "Once you get past the nerves and take that leap, it's worth it. Just be yourself, Jerry. Katie will appreciate that more than any rehearsed lines." She advised with a small smile.

"Dude, there she is!" Jack points out, turning Jerry around so he can see Katie's at her locker with her friend, Lindsay. "Go ask her. Come on. Go, go, go!"

Jack sits down on the bench by Kate, throwing his arm around her shoulders and kissing her temple. She smiled at him and leaned into his side, her arm wrapping around his waist as they talked while they waited for Jerry.

"Uh, uh, Katie." Jerry speaks up nervously after clearing his throat. "I wanted to know if you wanna go to the 'Zompyre' movie with me."

"Are you seriously asking her out?" Lindsay asks, raising her eyebrows. Jerry nods with a nervous smile. "Okay. Here's the deal." She smirks upon noticing Ashton walking down the hallway with Kim and Milton. "She'll go out with you, if Ashton will go with me."

"Yes, yes, yes, yes!" Jerry immediately said excitedly. "That'll happen. Uh, so-So, see ya tonight." He smiled shyly at Katie before turning around and walking back over to his friends.

"Hey, how'd it go?" Kate asked with a smile, standing up along with Jack.

Jerry gasps, smiling widely. "Dudes, she said yes!"

"That's great, Jer!" Kate grinned.

"I'm going to the movies with her tonight!" Jerry continued, giving Jack a bro hug.

Kate gave Jerry a side hug after the boys pulled apart and they start talking about tonight.

Meanwhile, Ashton was walking down the hallway with Kim and Milton, the three of them holding their sciene fair projects. Milton's project was more advanced than Ashton's and Kim's project. Kim grew a bean in a cup, and Ashton grew a flower.

"I finally finished my science fair project. It's a light refractometer. By using a series of convex mirrors, I'm able to intensify a single beam of light." Milton explained.

Ashton stares at him with confusion. "Talk in English, please. I hate it when you talk all sciency." He complained. He and Milton were good friends and all, but he still doesn't understand a lot of things Milton talks about. He wasn't the smartest person around, and Milton was always trying to teach him things. It usually went through one ear and out the other, and Ashton could never keep up.

Milton sighs and rolls his eyes. "Alright, let's see if I can explain it in simpler terms," Milton begins, gesturing with his hands. "Basically, my project can make light brighter by bouncing it off mirrors. Imagine if you had a flashlight, and you could make the beam of light coming out of it stronger and brighter by bouncing it around with mirrors. That's what my project does, but with science-y stuff."

Ashton nods slowly, trying to follow along. "Ah, got it. So, you're like a light wizard or something."

Milton chuckles. "Sure, let's go with that. What's your project, guys?"

"Grew a bean in a cup." Kim replied with a proud smile. Ashton felt butterflies in his stomach at seeing her smile. He couldn't help it. Whenever he was around her, she would have an effect on him. And she looked so cute with how proud of herself she was.

"I grew a cactus." Ashton shrugged, not thinking much of his project. It was a cactus, which is a lot harder to grow than a normal flower. He was pretty proud of himself though. He took care of the cactus everyday and took great pride in the fact that he took care of it well enough to grow a beautiful flower. Usually he could never keep a plant alive that long. He would forget to water them or he would be too busy to take care of them, so they would eventually die. This was different though. He had taken his time and paid attention, and it actually worked.

"A cactus?" Kim looks curious as she glanced over at his project. "It looks cool." She complimented, smiling softly at him. Ashton returned the smile, feeling his face grow warm at her attention.

"Thanks." He said shyly. He wasn't used to being so shy around girls, but something about Kim made him feel that way. He was usually smooth and charming when it came to girls, but around Kim, it was different. He had to try so hard not to be an awkward, flustered mess all the time around her. He wanted her to like him, and he was terrified of screwing it up. He was hoping he could get past that and eventually grow some confidence around her, but he's not sure if that'll happen anytime soon.

Lindsay and Katie happen to walk by the trio, glaring at the blonde-haired girl. "Kim."

Kim sighs, glaring back at her. "Lindsay."

Ashton glances over to his left when he heard music and noticed Jack and Jerry dancing to some music on a small stereo along with Kate. Suddenly, Jerry had danced into Milton accidentally, causing him to drop his project.

"No!" Milton cries out. "My light refractometer! It's ruined! It's gonna take me all night to build another one."

"You want a bean?" Kim sheepishly asked, offering her bean in a cup to Milton.

"No one's getting my cactus." Ashton mumbled, holding the cactus close to his chest protectively. He was a bit overprotective of his cactus. He worked hard on it, and he wasn't going to give it to anyone else. Kim giggled a little at his comment, her giggles making his heart flutter and his cheeks to heat up.

Milton turns to Jerry with a harsh glare. "You!"

Jerry's eyes widen, fear and panic settling in. "I have a date! Not the face!" He then ran off with Milton following him.

****

Later that night, Kate was getting ready for the movie. "Hey, kiddo." Kate looks over from the full length mirror she stood in front of and saw her dad standing at her door. Tanner sends her a smile. "I see you got plans tonight." He saw his daughter was finishing up her makeup, working on putting on lip gloss.

"Yeah, I'm going to the movies with the gang. They're going to see a scary movie." She informed, turning to look at her father, who sent her a look.

"You sure that's a good idea? Remember the last time you watched a horror movie?" Tanner reminded his daughter, who shuddered as she remembered the last horror movie she had seen and had nightmares for a week.

"Yeah, but Jack promised he'd protect me." She replies with a blush as she shrugged. "I'll be fine, dad."

Tanner smiles knowingly at his daughter's response. "Alright, just be careful, okay? And if you need anything, you know you can call me, right?" He stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Kate nodded, returning her father's smile. "Thanks, dad. I'll remember that." She appreciates her dad's concern and knew she could always rely on him. "Well, I gotta go. See you later." She gave her father a quick hug, grabbing her jacket before heading downstairs.

Jack was already waiting for her outside, sitting on the porch swing. He looks up when he hears the front door opening, smiling when he sees his girlfriend. "Hey, Rina."

Kate smiles as she walked over, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "Hey, Jackie. Ready to go?" She asked, sitting next to him on the swing. She wrapped her arm around his waist and leaned her head against his shoulder.

"Mhm." Jack nods. "But, uh, first..." His hand came up to grip her chin gently and turn her to face him before capturing her lips in a sweet, passionate kiss. She melted into his embrace and wrapped her arms around his neck, smiling into the kiss while her eyes closed. They only pull away when air became a necessity. They rest their foreheads together, both of them smiling as their eyes locked.

"Now, we can go." Jack said with a grin.

"Well, now I don't wanna go to the movies. I'd rather stay here with you." Kate admitted, pecking his lips again.

"Same here." Jack sighs. "But we can't ditch our friends." He stands up, grabbing her hand to pull her up too. "Come on." He said with a smirk, intertwining their fingers together.

"Okay, let's go." Kate agreed, following him.

****

When they get to the movie theater, they did bicker about who would pay for the tickets and the drinks and food but they compromised and they ended up splitting the bill. They were now sitting in their seats, near the aisle and talking quietly to each other while the commercials played.

"Kim." Lindsay sneered as she walked down the aisle where Kim stood, waiting for Ashton to meet her with the drinks. She had the popcorn they were going to share.

"Lindsay." Kim glares at her. She then raises her eyebrows. "You a 'Zompyre' fan?"

"Not really. I'm here on a date." Lindsay replies. She fakes a sympathetic look. "Oh, I'm sorry. You probably don't know what that is."

"Actually, I'm on a date too." Kim lied. She was only going to see the movie with Ashton as friends. It wasn't a date. But she would be lying if she said she didn't wish it was. Though she just said that because Lindsay was making her upset and she didn't like her attitude towards her.

"Ohh." Lindsay rolls her eyes, glancing over at the entrance and smiles at noticing Ashton. "And here's my date now. Hi, Ashton."

Ashton raises his eyebrows, confused, but he awkwardly waves at her. "Wha-You're here on a date with Ashton?"

"Yes, I am!" Lindsay argued.

"Wait, what?" Ashton asks in confusion, handing Kim's drink to her. "How long was I gone getting drinks?" He muttered to himself. He was so confused. He planned on coming here with Kim, not Lindsay.

"Come on, Ashton," Lindsay smiles at Ashton. "I saved us seats. Uh, buh-bye, Kim." She sassily said before walking to her seats.

"What, you're here on a date with Lindsay?" Kim asked Ashton in surprise, trying not to show how upset she was.

"I-what? No." Ashton stammers, shaking his head. "I was supposed to be here with you." He assures her. He grabs Jerry's arm, who was nearby eating popcorn. "Jerry, what did you do?"

"No hablo ingles, senor." Jerry replied in Spanish, pretending he didn't speak English.

"I didn't understand anything you just said but maybe that's because you're talking crazy." Ashton retorted, glaring at his friend.

"Dude, it was the only way that I would get Katie to go out with me. You gotta do this for me, man. Please." Jerry pleaded.

Ashton frowns, but he could see how much Jerry wanted this and he didn't want to hurt his feelings. He didn't want to hurt Kim's feelings either, but he had no idea how he was supposed to fix this. He let's out a sigh. "Okay."

"Thanks, dude." Jerry grinned, patting Ashton's shoulder. He then went to sit by Lindsay.

Ashton glances at Kim with a guilty expression. "Kim, I'm sorry, are you okay with this?"

"Of course!" Kim replies, raising her voice a bit which caused him to raise his eyebrows at her. "Apparently Lindsay's your date. Why wouldn't you sit with your date? And since you and I aren't on a date apparently, I'll go sit with Eddie!"

Ashton felt guilty and bad for the situation, and he couldn't stand seeing Kim upset. And knowing that it was because of him, he had a strong urge to do something about it. He grabs her wrist before she could walk away. "Wait, Kim, I'm sorry. I had no idea Jerry would do that to you. I want to make it up to you. Please let me." He pleaded, his thumb gently stroking her skin.

Kim's heart skips a beat at his touch, and she felt her anger disappear. She couldn't stay mad at him, especially not when he looked at her like that. And she could tell how much he was sorry, and how much he wanted to fix things. "Okay." She sighed.

Ashton's face lit up and a smile appeared on his face. "Great, then we'll go to another movie. Just you and me. Like we were supposed to." He suggested.

Kim's face broke into a smile. "Okay. I'd like that." She agreed. She and Ashton parted ways, the two excited for the next time they can hang out together.

Kate and Jack, who had been watching the interaction from where they sat, share a look. "Well, that was interesting." Jack commented

"Mhm." Kate agreed, leaning against his side as she held the bucket of popcorn. She felt bad for Ashton and Kim for what Jerry did, but she was happy that Ashton and Kim would eventually go out together. They would be a cute couple, and they clearly liked each other.

"Thanks again for inviting me, by the way." Kate murmured, looking up at her boyfriend with a fond smile.

Jack chuckles, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "No problem, Rina. But are you sure you're gonnna be okay? Because I know you'll get scared, and I'll have to hold you all night." He teased, winking at her.

Kate scoffs, playfully smacking his arm. "Shut up." She mumbles, her face growing warm. "But, you're right. You'll have to hold me all night."

"Good thing I like holding you." Jack murmured before he leaned down and kissed her forehead. Kate blushed at that, feeling her heart skip a beat and butterflies fill her stomach. She really was lucky to have him.

Suddenly, the lights dimmed and the previews started. Everyone starts getting into their seats and the theater quiets down as the movie started.

Kim realized she had fallen asleep during the movie, but when she woke up the theater was empty which didn't make her happy that her friends left her there. The courtyard of the mall looked completely different than before. She was so confused at the sudden change. Everything was destroyed and ruined. There was even some barrels here and there that had a fire started in it. It looked like something from an apocalypse show or movie.

She walks around, noticing some graffiti and trash on the ground. She started calling out for her friends, but she got no answer. Until she heard a banging on a nearby door, causing her to turn around with wide eyes. The person looked like Jerry which made her relieved.

"Jerry? What happened? What's going on around here?"

When Jerry turned around to face her, she was quick to find out this wasn't the real Jerry. This Jerry looked like a 'Zompyre' from the movie she had just fallen asleep to.

"What it do..." Jerry super speeds over to Kim with a smirk. "Girl?" He then suddenly burped loudly, green smoke coming out. Kim quickly backed away, ducking whenever Jerry went to hit her. She continued to fight him off until suddenly someone kicked Jerry to the side. Kim was surprised to see Kate, but Kate looked different than before. Kate had clothes that would be worn in an apocalyptic world. A black leather jacket, a dark grey shirt, a pair of torn up jeans, and a pair of boots. She also had a bow n arrow strapped across her back.

Kate manages to get Jerry away from Kim, but before Jerry could hit him, Jack suddenly appeared, catching Jerry's fist before he could hit Kate. "I'll hold him off, get ready." Jack warned her and she nodded in response.

Kate backed up as Jack fought with Jerry. She grabbed a slingshot she had that was in her pocket, putting a falafel ball in it. She aimed it at Jerry's mouth before she called out to him.

"Hope your hungry, Zompyre." She pulled back the slingshot and the falafel ball gets into Jerry's mouth.

"Hoo-ah! Right between the fangs! That's my cousin!"

Kate rolls her eyes and let out an annoyed huff at seeing her cousin, Rudy, was there. "Rudy, Jack and I had this handled, what are you doing here?"

"Just wanted to make sure you guys were good. We should probably get back to the rebel base." Rudy suggested as Jerry left.

"Kate?" Kim's eyes widen, looking between the three with surprise and confusion. "Jack? Rudy? Okay, what is going on?" She questioned.

Kate raises her eyebrows at the blonde, sharing a confused look with the others. "How does she know our names?" She whispered to Jack when she leaned over to him.

"We can deal with this later at the base. We gotta go." Rudy interrupted.

"I'm not going anywhere until someone tells me what's going on." Kim argues. Everyone's attention was drawn to a nearby roar, followed by a loud scream. Kim grimaces. "Or you know, we can go inside first. I'm flexible."

"Good choice." Kate nodded and led Kim along with the boys to the base.

****

Their base was at the dojo. Kim noticed the dojo looked completely different. It looked like the perfect hideout to have in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. It had everything you could need. Food, weapons, supplies, everything.

"What is going on here?" Kim inquired, staring at the place with confusion. She had never felt so confused before. She didn't understand what was going on. One moment, she was at the movies. The next, everyone was gone, and the world was like something out of a zombie movie.

"You're safe, that's what's important." Kate assured her with a small smile. She felt bad the girl seemed frazzled and confused though she couldn't blame her. She probably would be the same way if she was in her shoes. But she wanted to try to help offer some comfort.

"I'll tell you what's going on." Rudy replies. "We're at war with the zompyres. Yeah. When they first came we thought there was one or two. Or three or four, five-"

"Rudy!" Jack cut in, looking annoyed at his rambling.

"Yeah, get to the point." Kate sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose as she leaned against Jack. Her older cousin could ramble a lot and it could get annoying. It was at the point where it was annoying now. Jack wrapped his arms around her and placed his chin on top of her head, sending her a reassuring smile when she glanced at him. She sent him a small smile, leaning against him as she listened to her cousin.

Rudy raises his hands in defense. "There were thousands of 'em. They came crawling up from the sewers below Seaford."

"I was on the toilet when one came up." An old man chimed in.

"They multiplied by burping into humans' faces. And the worst part, they don't say 'excuse me'." Jack added.

After hearing a noise, the group looks over to see Ashton and Lindsay come down the pole that Kim noticed was like at a firefighter station. Kim saw they looked different too just like Kate, Rudy, and Jack. "Where did you go?" Rudy asked, walking over to them.

"We got more hairspray." Lindsay replied, tossing a can to Ashton and then one to Jack, both of them catching the can. Kate looked at the two with amusement and disbelief.

"Seriously, babe?" Kate chuckled.

"What?" Jack shrugs, using the hairspray. "The end of the world doesn't have to mean the end of my beautiful bouncy hair."

"Yeah, just 'cause it's the end of the world doesn't mean we can't look good." Ashton added.

Kate rolls her eyes again and shakes her head, but there was a small smile on her face. "Whatever you guys say."

"I'm Lindsay, Ashton's girlfriend." Lindsay introduces herself to Kim. "Who are you?"

Kim looks to the side with disgust, muttering to herself, "I really hate this world."

"Her name's Kim." Jack chimes in. "We found her wandering outside and had to use our last falafel ball to save her."

"You wasted our last ball on her?" Lindsay scoffs, crossing her arms. "I don't trust her Give her the Test."

"There's only one person that can give her..." Rudy pauses dramatically, grabbing Kim's arm and pulling her over. "The Test. I'll summon the rebel leader. Rebel leader!" He shouted.

A door opens and the rebel leader walked out. Kim saw it was Eddie, but Eddie had an eyepatch on and was holding a bat. "Can we trust you?" He asked when he walked over to Kim.

"Um, yeah." Kim shrugged, looking a bit confused.

"She passed." Eddie smiles. "Hey, you play softball? We really need a first baseman." Kate chuckled and shook her head in amusement at Eddie's comment.

A beeping noise got everyone's attention and Jack went over to where the tubes were where they got their letters from. "It's from the Professor." Jack announces. "He wants us to come to his secret lab. He's found a way to turn zompyres back into humans."

"This means we'll have something we haven't had in a while." Eddie realized.

"Toilet paper?" The old man cut in.

"No. Hope." Eddie told him.

"Let me know when you get toilet paper." The old man replied.

****

The group traveled through the forest to the Professor's secret lab. It was in a secluded area surrounded by tall trees. Soon Milton, the Professor, walked into the room. He pulled out a remote, pausing the soft music that was playing.

"Welcome, rebels, to my secret lab." Milton greets. "Thank you for removing your shoes."

The gang had removed their shoes after seeing the sign by the door. Although Kate then realized Jack still had his shoes on. She nudged him with a glare and he smiled sheepishly at her, kicking his shoes off. She grimaced when glass shattering is heard after he kicked his shoes off. Milton looked annoyed and dropped his head in defeat.

"I give you mankind's salvation. The Krupnick Coil!" Milton announces, gesturing to a device he had made. "This is super powerful refractometer emits a light so intense, it pierces the zompyre's inner darkness, turning them back into humans."

"Yeah, not gonna happen."

Kate is surprised along with the others when they suddenly heard Jerry's voice. Jerry was quick to appear in the room along with other zompyre's, knocking over the device and destroying it. Jack was quick to grab Kate's arm, pulling her behind him so she wouldn't get hurt as they all took a step back.

"Oopsie." Jerry shrugged.

"You fiend!" Milton shouts angrily. "He just destroyed our only chance of survival against the most evil force man has ever known."

"And he didn't take off his shoes." Eddie pointed out.

"How did you find the Professor's secret underground lab?" Jack inquired.

"Why don't you ask Lindsay?" Jerry asked, causing everyone to look at Lindsay with surprise.

"I did it. For us." Lindsay said, trying to reassure Ashton as she grabs his hand. "I made a deal, Ashton. The zompyrs'll spare us. You and I can be together."

"I made a lot of dumb ideas and dumb deals in the past," Ashton admits, staring at her with disbelief and pulling his hand away from her, stepping back as well. "But this has got to be the dumbest."

Jerry chuckles. "Yeah...About that deal." He super speeds over to Lindsay. "I lied." He then burped in her face to turn her into a zompyre.

"I'm gonna go on record and say she may be the worst girlfriend ever." Kim remarked.

"I second that." Kate agreed. She couldn't believe Lindsay would do something like that.

Now as a zompyre, Lindsay turned to the others and hissed at them. Everyone began to back up, especially when one of them knocked the device to the side and they all started to move closer.

"Sir, it has been an honor to serve with you." Rudy said to Eddie, saluting him. "One last request, rebel leader. Permission to cry like a little girl."

"Permission granted." Eddie sobbed and Rudy followed. Kate rolled her eyes at them and shared a look with Jack.

"We can't give up, not yet." She argues and he nodded in agreement, moving over to the speaker. She furrows her eyebrows with confusion. "What are you doing?"

"Getting us out of here." Jack replied, turning on upbeat music. Jerry immediately started moving to the beat, trying to stop it, but he had trouble.

"Can't resist urge...To...Dance! Zompyres, let's do this thing." Jerry spoke and Kate's eyes widen with surprise as they all did the same dance move to the music. While they were distracted, the group took this time to escape. Jack grabbed Kate's hand as they ran out the door, pulling her behind him.

The group runs through the forest, not stopping until they reach the dojo. "How did you know that music would make Jerry dance?" Kim questioned as they all got back to their safe place.

"Well before he was a zompyre, Jerry was one of us. Music was his weakness. And girls." Jack explained.

"Don't forget math." Kate chimes in, sitting beside him on the coffee table. "Oh, and he could never really tie his shoelaces."

Jack nods in agreement. "He had a lot of weaknesses." Kim nodded in realization.

"The only thing left of my refractometer is this crystal diode wrapped up in this wad of toilet paper." Milton spoke.

"I'll take the toilet paper. See you people in about a week." The old man grabbed the toilet paper from him and walked to the bathroom.

"That's disturbing." Ashton commented as he shuddered.

"Is there anything we can do with the crystal diode?" Kim inquired.

"Well, there is one prototype coil. But it's in the darkest, scariest, most evil place on Earth." Milton answered.

"The snake cave on the edge of town that goes down to the bowels of the underworld?" Rudy questioned.

"Worse." Milton replies. "School." Everyone gasped at that, all looking horrified.

****

The group went over to Falafel Phil's, a hideout place for the humans that were left. "We're going to the zompyres' lair. The school." Eddie explained to Phill.

"That place is scarier than the snake caves on the edge of town that reach into the bowels of the underworld." Phil gasped.

"That's why we need all the falafel balls you got." Eddie nodded.

"Happy to help. Five hundred dollars! Each!" Phil ordered, causing the others to look at him with surprise.

"You just said you were happy to help." Ashton pouts. "That's not very nice."

"But we're trying to save humanity!" Jack defended.

"Oh, why didn't you say so? One thousand dollars! Each!" Phil exclaimed.

"As if we have that kind of money at the end of the world." Kate scoffed. Did this guy really think they had the kind of money for that?

"Don't you care about saving the world?" Kim inquired.

"No, not really. The zompyre apocalypse has been great for the business. No falafel ball for you!" Phil tells the group. "Get out!" Then his goat, Tootsie, walks in from outside. "Tootsie, what's wrong? Something seems different about you?"

"Is it my demonic red eyes? My mouth full of fangs? The fact that I'm talking to you right now?" Tootsie questioned in a distorted voice. Kate gasped, eyes widening at this. This wasn't good.

"What was the first one again?" Phil asked, looking confused.

"I'm a zompyre goat, you dimwit!" Tootsie told him.

"Yes, that's it! That's the one!" Phil realized and just after that Tootsie belched.

"Look out!" Eddie called out.

"No!" Kate called out worriedly with the others as Eddie stepped in front of Phil, getting hit with the gas instead and turning into a zompyre. Kate couldn't believe it. Another one of her friends had turned into a zompyre.

"Tootsie!" Phill worriedly said as the goat ran out. Eddie stood with a growl, now in zompyre form. Then he super sped out of the resturant.

"Eddie!" Rudy shouted.

"Not my Tootsie!" Phil cried out.

Before the gang went to the school, they dressed as zompyres to try and blend in with the zompyres. The school was trashed on the inside, zompyres slept in lockers or upside down from the ceiling. Phil had a falafel gun launcher with him.

"You really think this is going to work, Jack?" Phil whispered.

"Yes. They won't be awake for hours and if they do wake up, this makeup will help us blend in." Jack replied in a whisper tone.

"I'm sorry for yelling at you to do my makeup, Kim. But as the new rebel leader, it wouldn't look right if I had to do my own." Rudy told Kim as they walked in. Kate was surprised when Rudy turned around, revealing he looked like a panda. She had to admit, it was amusing and hard not to chuckle.

"No, I get it. Happy to help." Kim grinned proudly. Kate chuckled, smiling with amusement.

"If it's here, the coil will be in the multipurpose room with the other science fair projects." Milton explained.

"Guys, we have to be quiet. Nobody make any loud noises." Rudy added.

Just as they start walking, a cell phone went off. "Seriously? Who's the jerk? First time in an evil zompyre's-Oh, wait. That's me." Rudy realizes, grabbign his phone and turning it off. "Sorry. That's just poor planning."

Lockers opening gained the group's attention, Jack's hand finding Kate's immediately. Kate's heart raced, her eyes wide as she noticed Joan was one of the zompyres getting out of the lockers. The group began to back up as zompyres from across the room got out of the lockers, growling at them. "Oh no. You woke up Joan! Queen of the Zompyres." Milton worriedly said.

"Oh, lookie what we have here." Joan smirks. "A cute little panda boy and his friends."

"I'm not a panda. Kim, why does she think I'm a panda?" Rudy questions, furrowing his eyebrows as Kim pretended she didn't do anything. His eyes widen in realization as he turns to face her. "Oh, you panda'd me, didn't you?"

Kim cringes. "A little bit."

"How dare you dress up and sneak into my lair?" Joan sneeres, super speeding over to Rudy and belched loudly. Green smoke hit Rudy and he faints. Joan grabs his arm, dragging him with her as she walks away with a chuckle. "Pandas."

"Phil, cover us!" Jack called out, heading up the stairs with Kate, Ashton, Kim and Milton following them.

"Okay, Jack. I'll hold them back." Phil went up the stairs as well, standing on the small platform and aiming the launcher at the zompyres. Kate could hear him shooting the falafel balls at the zompyres as she ran away with Jack and the others.

Kate walks into the multipurpose room, Milton leading the group. The group were wiping off the makeup that was on their face they used to b lend in. In the multipurpose room it was trashed up and had damaged things of course, but there was also tarps covering items on the tables in the room. "The coil has to be around here somewhere." Milton spoke.

Jack flips up one of the tarps and snorts at what he saw. "Look. Some loser grew a bean in a cup." Kim looked at him with a glare as he walked off.

"Hey, I grew a cactus in a cup so shut up, Jack." Ashton cut in, glaring at him as well. "Growing a bean in a cup isn't a loser thing. It's actually kinda cool." Kim looked at him with a fond smile, butterflies in her stomach. He didn't know it but he was defending her and she liked him more because of it.

"Here's the coil!" Milton said with relief as he pulls back another tarp to reveal the coil prototype. "I just need time to install the crystal diode and it'll work."

"I don't think that's gonna happen."

A familiar voice spoke up, causing them to glance over at Jerry with surprise and fear. "Guys, stop him!" Milton told them. Ashton stayed by Milton as a guard as the other three went to attack Jerry. Jerry had pushed Jack and Kate to the side and was about to turn Kim into a zompyre when Jack got her attention, tossing a falafel ball he had at her. She caught it and threw it in Jerry's mouth, backing away immediately. Ashton had even grabbed her arm, pulling her behind him protectively.

"Oh no!" Jerry mumbles, holding his stomach as it gurgled. "I hate school bathrooms." He then ran out of the room.

"You guys got him gone, great job!" Ashton smiled at his friends. Kate was relieved Jerry was gone and she smiled while high fiving her boyfriend and Kim.

Kim's eyes widen when she caught sight of zompyre Lindsay behind her and Ashton. "Ashton, your crazy zompyre ex girlfriend is behind you!" Kim warned, causing Ashton to turn around with wide eyes. Kate and the others watched with surprise and fear as Lindsay super sped to Ashton. He was quick to gently push Kim away from him when Lindsay super sped to him and then belched, the green smoke hitting him.

"Ashton!" Kate worriedly said.

"No!" Kim cries out, backing away towards Jack and Kate. The three of them stood back to back near Milton as Kim glances over at Milton. He had been trying to install the crystal diode into the coil. "How are we coming with that coil?"

"The diodes in place. I just need to turn it-" Before Milton could finish his sentence, Lindsay belched in his face. "Little bump in the road." He grimaced and ran out of the room.

"Kim, we have to turn that thing on before it's too late!" Kate told her.

"Got it! If you guys can distract them, I'll turn it on." Kim suggested and after the couple nodded in response, the trio part ways. Kim quickly ran over to the coil protype as Jack and Kate began fighting off Ashton and Lindsay. But during the fight, Jack and Kate didn't realize Ashton had snuck over behind Kim to turn her into a zompyre. Just as he was about to do it, Lindsay scoffed loudly.

"No way, you're not turning her, Ashton! You are supposed to be spending eternity with me."

Ashton huffs, turning to face her with annoyance. "Really? Are you serious right now? I haven't even been a zompyre for a minute and you're already bossing me around."

Lindsay's eyes widened at that. "You don't get to talk to me like that!" She glares at him. "How dare you! You know, my mother has warned me about boys like you..."

"Is this how it's gonna be for eternity? Us arguing? I'm already sick of it." Ashton glared at her and their voices overlap as they argue.

"Come on, guys. You need to lighten up!" Kim called out, smirking as he turned on the coil. A bright light flashed through the room and it blinded everyone for a moment, especially the zompyres.

Kate had blinked a couple times to get the blinding light out of her vision and once she did, her eyes widened when she saw Ashton and Lindsay back to normal. "It worked!" Kate cheered, sharing a smile with Jack and her heart fluttered as he wrapped his arm around her and kissed the side of her head.

"Are you okay?" Kim asked worriedly, walking over to Ashton.

"I am now." Ashton replies. He was still a bit disoriented from the whole experience, but he was feeling better already. "Thank you, Kim. You saved me."

"I was not gonna let you spend eternity with her." Kim admits with a chuckle. She smiles softly at him. "You belong with me. You belong with me."

****

"You belong with me." Kim mumbled.

"Not gonna happen, cookie. I've been with the same woman since before electricity." The old man sitting next to her replied.

Kim wakes up immediately after that, looking around with wide eyes. She sighs in relief at seeing things were normal. "It was all just a dream." She realized people had started leaving the room, only she, the old man, Jack and Kate and Ashton and Lindsay were in the room.

"Kim, you okay?" Kate asked the blonde with worry as she and Jack walked up the aisle. He had his arm around her shoulder and her arm was around his waist, looking at the blonde with concern.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just spaced out there for a second." Kim sheepishly replied.

"I had so much fun with you, Ashton." Lindsay admitted, smiling at the dark haired boy as they began to walk out of the room. "Wanna go grab some froyo?"

Ashton's eyes widen slightly and he hesitates, not knowing how to politely decline her offer. "Uh..."

Noticing this, Kim quickly excused herself from Jack and Kate and walks over to Ashton and Lindsay. She puts a comforting hand on Ashton's shoulder, smiling at Lindsay. "Sorry, Lindsay. He promised he'd help me with my science project." She smiles proudly. "I'm growing a bean."

"Right." Ashton agrees, his shoulders relaxing and he looked less tense thanks to Kim's help. "Yeah, I gotta help her grow a bean in a cup."

"Buh-bye, Lindsay." Kim waved at her and Lindsay scoffed at her before walking away. Jack and Kate had already left the room, leaving just Ashton and Kim in the room.

"Thank you for saving me." Ashton chuckles, turning to face Kim with relief. "I thought I was doomed."

"Anything for you, Ash." Kim smiled fondly at him, her heart fluttering when he grinned at her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, hugging her close to his side.

"Same goes to you, Kim." He mumbled and her heart raced. He was always so sweet to her and he never failed to make her heart skip a beat. She could've sworn she felt a spark between them as they hugged and her heart fluttered in her chest. Maybe she should go for it and ask him out...

"Hey, guys," Jack's voice brought her out of her thoughts and the two pull away from the hug. Jack walks over to them with Kate, his arm still around he shoulders. "We were gonna go get some froyo, wanna join us?" He offered.

"That sounds great, thanks!" Kim replied eagerly, glancing at Ashton with a hopeful smile.

"Yeah, I could go for some froyo." Ashton agreed, looking at Kim with a fond smile. The two followed the couple out of the room, their sides brushing against each other's and hands brushing together. Kim's heart fluttered in her chest when his hand found hers and intertwined their fingers together. She looked at him and he had a grin on his face, blushing lightly and looking back at her. He winked at her and she giggled, looking away. Her heart was racing and her face was flushed, but she was happy. She was holding hands with the guy she was crushing on and she had a good feeling that her crush wasn't one sided. She had a good feeling about this.

Kate looks back at them with a smile. Her two friends were blushing and had smiles on their faces, both of them clearly having feelings for the other. She couldn't help but grin widely as she faced Jack. "I think we'll have a new couple soon in the group."

Jack looks back at the pair, grinning when he saw them. He smiles at his girlfriend. "I'm not surprised, those two are so into each other it's practically written all over their faces." Jack chuckles softly, squeezing Kate's shoulder affectionately. "But hey, I'm all for it. They should just go for it, I'm getting tired of watching them dance around each other."

"Agreed. Hopefully it'll happen soon." Kate replied as they walked out of the room together, hand in hand. She squeezed Jack's hand gently, feeling grateful for his support and companionship.

As they headed towards the froyo place with Ashton and Kim, she couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and contentment. It was moments like these, surrounded by friends and filled with laughter, that made everything feel right in the world. She glanced over at Ashton and Kim, who were walking close together, their fingers still intertwined. It was clear that something special was blossoming between them, and Kate couldn't wait to see where it would lead. As they approached the froyo shop, she smiled to herself, knowing that whatever adventures lay ahead, they would face them together.
