CHAPTER SEVENTEEN, we are family
Kate was currently standing by the boys, looking at a red colored golf cart in awe, the same look that was on her friend's faces. "Six and a half horsepower engine." Jack stated.
Eddie points at the golf cart. "Aluminum rims with independent suspension."
"Four-wheel servo-drive disc brakes." Milton added.
"It's..." Jerry pauses for a moment, figuring out what to say. "Red." Kate giggled a bit, smiling at him with amusement.
"Hey, guys."
Kate and the boys glance over to their left when they heard Kim's voice, all of them gasping and backing away with shock upon seeing her look. Kim's blonde hair looked like a mess, part of it was in small braids, one strand of it was pink while the rest of it looked like an afro. And she had a lot of makeup on her.
Milton walks forward, his eyes widening. "Kim, wow! You look, uh...Different. Hot date tonight?"
"With a clown?" Jack chimed in, smiling at Kim with amusement.
Kim rolls her eyes. "Go ahead and laugh," She shows the ten dollar bill she held to her friends and smiles. "But I just got us ten bucks closer to buying that go-cart."
Kate smiles at her. "Nice, Kim! How'd you get it?"
"Wilford Beauty College is paying people to be their practice dummy." Kim responded.
Kate nods in realization. "That explains the new look."
Jerry smiles, pointing at Kim. "My cousin Chewie goes there. You know, for his final, he trimmed my grandfather's mustache. He went through three pairs of scissors, but he got most of it."
"Man, I can't wait 'till we get that go-cart." Eddie commented and everyone chimed in, saying how excited they were as they walked inside the dojo.
"Alright, time to kick in." Milton announces. "I made forty bucks by visiting my great-aunt Betty." He opens his locker, getting out a jar. "Every time I go, she thinks it's my birthday and gives me money." He takes off the lid and Kim puts her ten bucks in it. "I went four times yesterday."
Jack smiles, pulling out some money from his pocket. "And I went twice." Milton looked at him with confusion as he put the money in the jar.
"I got twenty bucks by selling a couple of my books that I don't read anymore." Kate explained, putting in her twenty dollars into the jar.
"We know how hard it was for you to sell your books because they mean a lot to you so thank you for your contribution." Milton smiled and Kate nodded, looking down with a sad look on her face as Jack patted her shoulder to comfort her.
"Cindy Connors gave me ten bucks to stop asking her out in front of her boyfriend." Eddie chipped in his money he got while Milton picked out a note.
"Someone put an IOU in here. 'Took five bucks to buy a foot-long at Captain Corndog's. It's dope, o. Whoo'." Everyone immediately looked at Jerry with annoyance, seeing he was eating a corndog.
Jerry pretends he doesn't know who wrote the IOU even though it was obvious he was the one who wrote it. "Who would do something like that?"
Jack rolls his eyes. "Dude, come on, Jerry. You're the only one who hasn't contributed to the go-cart fund."
"I don't have the talents to make money." Jerry defends himself. "I even tried selling doors, door-to-door, you know how hard it is to find a house without a door?"
"You guys are never gonna guess how I just made ten dollars." Rudy spoke with a smile as he walked inside the dojo. Kate covered her mouth to stifle a laugh after seeing his hair cut.
"Uh" Kim's eyes widen and she sheepishly smiles. "Practice dummy at the Wilford Beauty College?"
Rudy stops by his office, glancing at her with confusion. "No, I sold my old golf shoes. What's this about a beauty college?"
****
Kate was practicing on her own as Milton and Jack sparred with each other the next day. Rudy and Eddie left to go do something. Kate wasn't for sure what they were doing, but after hearing Rudy saying he had to save Eddie from a lifetime of crime and incarceration she wasn't for sure if she wanted to know what they were going to do. A few moments later, suddenly the boys screamed which caused Kate to stop practicing and look at them with concern.
"Guys, what's wr-" Kate stopped the middle of her sentece with a scream of her own when she looked in the direction the boys were looking at. Kim stood at the entry way, looking crazier than yesterday. Today she still had afro hair and that strand of pink hair, but now she had more strands of hair sticking up that were different colors, her makeup still a bit over the top.
Kim smirks. "Another ten bucks towards the go-cart."
"Getting the money is great and all," Kate said, walking over to stand by the boys. She furrows her eyebrows. "But why would you wanna put yourself through that kind of pain?"
Kim chuckles. "I just remind myself this is for the money." Kate nods in response. "Has, um, Jerry put any money in yet?" Kim questioned.
Kate raises her eyebrows at her. "What do you think?"
"I haven't seen Jerry in two days." Milton admitted.
Kate nods in realization, glancing at him. "Yeah, I haven't either."
"Ah, guys, we were pretty rough on him." Jack comments. "He's probably embarrassed he can't kick in enough for the go-cart." Just after he said that, the four teens heard an engine revving out in the courtyard, causing the four of them to share a confused look and head outside.
Tires screeched as the person driving the golf cart turned a corner. The friend group watched in shock as the person got up and took their helmet off, revealing the person was Jerry. "Wow, I didn't see that coming." Kate remarked, her friends nodding in agreement.
"Oh, hey, you guys." Jerry smiles, taking off his sunglasses. "You like my new ride?"
"You bought our go-cart?" Jack questioned, looking at Jerry with hurt. All of Jerry's friends were hurt he bought the go-cart without them.
"Yeah." Jerry hooks the sunglasses on his shirt and looks at his friends with a smug expression. "I, uh, I decided to go solo." He threw the helmet to Kim for her to hold it and the blonde glared at him.
"Two days ago, you couldn't go solo on a gumball." Milton pointed out.
Jerry shrugs. "Well, that was before I decided to get a job delivering meatballs for the Meatball King." When his phone rings, he gets his phone out of his pocket. He smiles at his friends. "Gotta take this." He answers the call. "Hello?" He walked off to the side as he talked on the phone, meanwhile his friends looked at the go-cart in awe. Jerry talked to someone about how he delivered the thing to the guy at the place and then he hung up.
Jerry looks at Kim with a smile, offering her some money. "You know what, doll? Why don't you go get yourself fixed up."
Kim angrily shoves the helmet to Milton. "That's it."
Kate's eyes widen and she shares a worried look wtih Jack. "Kim-"
"Wait." Jack said worriedly. Kate and Jack try to stop Kim so when she doesn't listen to them they quickly grab her arms, pulling her away from Jerry. Then they stand between her and Jerry, making sure Kim doesn't attack him.
Jerry chuckles, putting the money back in his pocket and gets back in the golf cart. He whistles, gesturing at Milton for his helmet. Milton throws the helmet to him, he caught it and put it on. Jerry held up a peace sign before he drove away.
"I really want to be mad at him," Milton speaks up. "But he looks so cool."
****
Jack, Kate, and Kim were hanging out at Falafel Phil's later that day. "I still cannot believe that Jerry bought our go-cart." Jack frowned.
"This goes way beyond the go-cart." Kim said.
Kate nods in agreement. "He completely changed since he got that job."
"If he calls me 'doll' one more time, I'm gonna pummel him!" Kim angrily exclaimed.
"Hey, guys." Ashton greets as he walks over to his friends after he walked inside the resturant. He yelps, startled when he sees Kim's new look, but he still doesn't recognize who she is. He looks at Jack and Kate nervously. "Who's the new girl?"
Kate chuckles. "It's Kim."
Ashton's eyes widen in surprise. "Wait, really?"
"Yeah." Kim rolls her eyes. "This beauty college is paying people to be practice dummies. I only did it to help pay for the go-cart that Jerry stole from us."
"Oh," Ashton nods in realization, taking a seat at the table across from Kate. "That makes sense."
"Okay, three falafels for you." Phil said, carrying a tray of food over to the table. he glances at Ashton. "Would you like anything?"
"Sure. I'll have what they're having." Ashton smiled.
"Coming right up." Phil smiles and when he looked over at Kim, he jumps, startled by her new look. "Oh-ho! Holy ghanoush!"
Kim sighs. "I know, Phil. My hair looks hideous."
"I can fix this." Phil reassures her. "I've seen worse."
Kate raised her eyebrows at him, surprised by his statement. She didn't know what was worse than the hairstyles Kim got from the beauty college. Then her eyes widened when he unhooked the top of his apron to reveal some hair stylist equipment hooked to it. She looked impressed to see he was ready for something like this and she wondered if that stuff was always with the apron this whole time.
"Do you mind if my hands dance with your 'harr'?" Phil asked, waving his hands dramatically. Ashton and Kate chuckled at how he pronounced hair.
"Phil, do you even know anything about 'har'?" Jack inquired, looking at Phil with confusion.
"Don't you worry, baby. I know what I'm doing." Phil smiles. "I'm frosting Tootsie's tips as we speak." The group looks over at the kitchen door when the goat walked out, revealing the goat had tin foil on top of her. Phil gasps. "No, Tootsie, you're not ready yet! Five more minutes. Back under the lamps. Go, go, go, go, go." He turned back to Kim, now holding a hairdryer. Where he got the hairdryer? Kate had no idea and she didn't bother on asking.
"Phil, you've got a customer." Jack pointed out as a bald man walked in wearing all black.
"He looks evil." Ashton whispered to his friends, earning amused looks from some of them.
"Uh, hello, Mr. Dirk." Phil nervously greets, standing in front of him. "What brings you around to the town?"
"It's time to pay your bill." Dirk responded.
"Uh, but...Please, I need more time." Phil pleaded.
"No, you're out of time and I ain't playing games." Dirk told him, looking at Phil angrily.
"Games?" Phil smiles nervously. "I love playing games. Let's play hiding and the seeking. I'm going to hide and you-"
"Alright, that's it." Dirk interrupted him and Kate's eyes widened, watching worriedly when he goes to punch Phil. Thankfully, Jack stood up and caught his fist in time before it hit Phil.
"I knew he was evil." Ashton muttered.
Kim gets up, pushing Phil behind her as Ashton and Kate stand, ready to fight. "You probably shouldn't have done that." Jack commented. When Mr. Dirk threw another punch, Jack caught it, twisted his arms around and swung him against one table. He then kicked him out towards the door. Phil sighed with relief as the four teens looked at him with concern.
"Phil, who was that guy?" Jack inquired.
"He collect the money for the meatballs that I do not need, but I am forced to buy." Phil answered.
"I knew he was evil." Ashton muttered.
"From who?" Jack asked Phil.
"The Meatball King." Phil replied
Jack furrows his eyebrows. "The Meatball King?"
Kim groans in frustration. "That's Jerry's boss!"
Ashton smiles. "Wait, Jerry works for the Meatball King now? That's so..." After seeing the annoyed looks on his friends faces, he quickly changes what he was going to say, "Not cool."
When they hear Tootsie bleat, the group looked over to see Tootsie was out of the kitchen and had now ate most of the tin foil. "Oh, great, Tootsie." Phil sighs. "Now, why would such a good little goat eat her tips?" Then suddenly a timer rings, causing his eyes to widen. "And her timer?"
****
The next day, Kate rushed into the dojo along wtih Kim and Jack. "Is Jerry here?" Kim questioned.
"Yeah, he's in the locker room." Milton answered.
Jerry then walked out wearing a cheetah print gi with a lion picture on the front of it nad had an orange belt wrapped around his waist.
"Um, what are ou wearing?" Kim asked in disbelief.
"A custom made gi." Jerry smiles. "My new boss got it for me. Check it." He presses a button and a recorded roar was heard. "Whoo-ho-ho!" He grinned.
Rudy points at the gi and this was when Kate finally noticed that he had a bandaid covering his nose which made her concerned for her cousin. "That is the tackiest gi I've ever seen." Rudy retorts. "I mean, where would one even go to buy such a thing? In a medium?" Kate rolled her eyes, knowing that Rudy wanted one.
"Jerry, your new boss is forcing people to buy meatballs." Jack informs Jerry. "He's a criminal."
Jerry scoffs. "Sure he is. You know what? You guys are just jealous 'cause I've got-"
Before Jerry could finish his sentence, Phil ran in, worriedly exclaiming, "The Meatball King stole Tootsie!" Kate's eyes widened and she glanced at him worriedly. Phil handed Jerry the note he found and everyone crowded around Jerry to look at the note.
"'Give me the money or the goat gets it. The Meatball King'." Jerry read out loud. He shakes his head. "Well, that doesn't prove anything. You know how many Meatball Kings there are in the world?"
"Pretty sure there's just the one." Kate sassily replied.
"He took Tootsie." Jack pointed out.
Jerry falters for a second before he speaks, "You know how many Tootsies there are-"
"Jerry!" Kim scolded him.
"I get it. I'm working for a criminal!" Jerry frowned. He turned around and walked away. Kate's eyes widened when she saw a tail on the back of the gi that turned around.
"Oh, I gotta get one of those gis." Rudy commented.
****
The group were now sitting in the lobby of the dojo while Rudy talks with the police. "Uh, that's right, officer. Tootsie is a goat. Mm-hmm. Oh. Okay then, thanks. Take care." Everyone looks at him hopefully as he hangs up. "Yeah, uh, they're not gonna help us."
"I'll never see my Tootsie ever again." Phil cried out, sitting besides Kim, holding onto a photo album of Tootsie.
In an attempt to cheer him up, Kim suggests to look over Tootsie's photo album again. "Yeah? Okay." Phil smiles, opening the photo album. "Oh, this is my favorite." He points at one of the pictures on the second page. "It's from her Baah Mitzvah."
Jerry sighs sadly, standing up. "Man, this is all my fault."
"Won't argue with you there." Kate remarked.
"I just saw an opportunity to make some really good money. I didn't realize what I was doing." Jerry admitted.
"Oh, okay." Phil stands up, setting the photo album on the chair. "I must figure out a way to pay this ransom."
Jack stands up, furrowing his eyebrows. "And then what? You'll be back to overpaying for meatballs that you don't need." He glances at his friends. "Guys, we have to stop him."
"But how?" Phil inquired.
"Yeah, it's not like I can just stick my phone onto my chest, go into the Meatball King's office, record his confession, then take the evidence to the police department." Jerry scoffed.
****
That's exactly what the group planned to do. They glued Jerry's phone to his chest, recording the conversation he has wtih the Meatball King. But somehow the group got disconnected so they decided on calling him back. When Jerry came back to the dojo, his clothes were ripped and he was covered in soap suds. Apparently when the group called Jerry back, he had to pour water on himself as he lied to his boss and he ended up getting electrocuted because of that.
"Okay, uh, how did you get covered in suds?" Kate asked, looking at Jerry with confusion.
"Well, just before I almost bust into flames," Jerry replies in an upset tone. "I ran through the car wash where I realized two things. One, you know that blow dryer at the end? It can literally blow your freckles off. And two, the Meatball King was talking to his boss on the phone today and he was scared to death with him."
"How does that help us?" Jack questioned.
"Well, he's never seen the guy. They call him the Schnoz." Jerry responded.
Milton chuckles. "Why do they call him that?"
"Because he's got one gnarly looking honker." Jerry nodded and then his eyes widened when he thought of an idea. Everyone else thought of the same one since they all looked at Rudy with a smile.
Rudy smiles, not quite getting what they were insinuating. "What?"
****
The group planned on Phil meeting the Meatball King out in the courtyard that night with a briefcase, pretending the money was in there. Then Rudy would show up dressed as the Schnoz with the others as his posse. Phil currently stood in the coutyard that was empty and for some reason there was fog. The Meatball King walked over to him, walking Tootsie with a leash by him and some of his men, including Mr. Dirk, was behind him.
"Glad to see you come to your senses." The Meatball King comments. "You got my money?"
"You got my goat?" Phil inquired.
The Meatball King points at Tootsie by him. "Can't you see she's right there?" Then Jerry walks over, standing by Phil which surprised him. "Jerry? Shouldn't you be making a delivery?"
"I'm done with deliveries." Jerry tells him. "When I took a job with you, I didn't know what kind of person you were. But I do now."
The Meatball King looks at him with confusion. "What are you doing here with goat boy?"
"Goat boy's a friend of mine." Jerry responds. He smirks. "In fact, he's got a lot of friends. Some you might even know."
"Oh yeah?" The Meatball King challenges. "Like who?"
Rudy walks over to Jerry and Phil, wearing a green jacket and matching pants. He had on a fake mustache and a fake nose. "The Schnoz." Kate, Kim, Jack, and Milton walked behind him, all wearing different colored jacket and pants. Jack wore a blue jacket that matched his blue pants, Milton wore yellow jacket and pants, Kim wore pink, and Kate wore purple.
"I would have been here earlier, but I got lost in all this fog." Rudy explained, waving his hand around, trying to move some fog out of the way.
The Meatball King looks nervous. "I swear on my mama's meatballs. If I knew Phil was a friend of yours, I would have never disrespected him." He glances at Dirk. "Dirk, give 'em the goat."
Dirk hands off Tootsie's leash to Phil. Rudy kneels down in front of Tootsie to talk to her. "Tootsie, welcome back to the family."
"Let's go, Tootsie." Phil smiled, walking away with his goat as Rudy stood. Kate's eyes widened and she exchanged a worried look with Jack, who stood by her, when she noticed the goat ate the fake mustache.
"You don't knwo how lucky you are, that not a hair on Tootsie's-" Rudy stops in the middle of his sentence when he realized something. "The goat ate my fake mustache, didn't it?"
The Meatball King looks at Rudy and the others with wide eyes. Everyone nods, but Jerry is the only one who verbally replies. "Yeah."
Everyone got into fighting positions. Whenever one guy ran at Rudy to kick him, Jack stopped him and kicked him to the side. Then everyone began fighting. Kate was fighting a guy twice her size, but thankfully she managed to get the upper hand and throw him onto the ground. She smiled in victory, glancing over at her friends to see most of them had knocked out the Meatball King's posse they were fighting with.
"Rudy!" Milton calls out, gaining Rudy's attention. "Meatball bazooka!" Rudy looked in the direction Milton pointed at to see the Meatball King held a meatball bazooka. Kate looked over at the Meatball King, her eyes widening with surprise.
"Rudy!" Jerry shouted worriedly, running towards him. He jumped in front of Rudy, getting hit with the meatballs instead. Everyone watched in shocked as he took the hit for Rudy. Rudy knelt by Jerry, looking at him with concern. Then an angry expression replaced the concerned one. He stood, facing the Meatball King.
Rudy runs at the Meatball King, but Dirk stops him. Dirk gets ahold of Rudy's arm and Rudy kicks his side, causing him to let go and stumble to the side. He got into a fighting stance, looking at the Meatball King when he aimed the meatball bazooka at him.
Rudy looks at him nervously and points. "You wouldn't...Okay."
"Freedom!"
Kate looks around with confusion when she suddenly heard Joan shout. In an air duct above where the Meatball King stood, Joan jumps out of it, landing on top of the Meatball King. Kate furrows her eyebrows, wondering why Joan was wearing an orange jumpsuit, one that prisoners wear. Eddie crawls to the edge of the air duct, looking at Joan, who had stood. Joan smiles and points at him. "This is where we go our separate ways. Good luck, kid."
Eddie smiles, waving goodbye at her as she ran away. "Bye, Norma!"
"Anyone else confused?" Kate asked her friends and they all nodded in agreement.
Jerry stands up, glaring at the Meatball King, who looks at him with disbelief. "I can't believe you did this to me, Jerry! I treated you like a son. You were like family."
As Kate and the others move to stand by Jerry, Jerry scoffs at the Meatball King. "You're not my family." He gestures to his friends and smiles. "These people are my family."
"All I know is your family's crazy!" The Meatball King shouts. He glances at his men, who had gotten up and stood by him. "Let's get out of here, guys." Then he ran away with his men following him. Kate and Jack high fived each other, smiling as they sat beside each other on the bench surrounding the palm tree while Jerry, Kim, and Milton stood by them.
"Oh, Rudy, I found my receipt." Eddie smiles at Rudy. "I did pay for that pretzel." Kate nods in realization. What Rudy said about Eddie earlier made a lot more sense now.
"Oh, really? Let's see it." Rudy smiled.
"Oh, I don't have it. Joan ate it." Eddie explained.
"Here we go." Rudy nods, looking disappointed. "First you steal and now you're lying. I've got a guy that deals with liars." He put his hand on Eddie's shoulder, guiding him away.
"What are you talking about? I mean..." Eddie's voice trailed off as he and Rudy walk away.
Jerry faces his friends. "I just want to say how sorry I am. I let the whole job thing to get my head and money should never be more important than friendship."
Jack stands up and smiles. "You're right. But in the end, you were the one who came in with the plan to get Tootsie back and it all worked out. And on top of that you got yourself a go-cart."
"No, we got a go-cart," Jerry corrected him, causing his friends to smile at him. Kate stood, grinning as she high fived Kim and Milton.
"Whoo-hoo!" The friend group looks to their left when they heard Joan shout. They watch with surprise as she drives the go-cart. "Two hours to Mexico, losers!"
"Well," Kate frowns. "There goes our go-cart."
A/N kim was brave for looking that ridiculous to help chip in for the go cart. i dont think i would've ever done that
