CHAPTER ONE, kate & jack's reunion
Kate currently sat at the table in the cafeteria she always sat at with some of her only friends, Eddie, Jerry, and Milton. Yes, they were all boys and they annoyed her and got on her nerves at some point, but she still cared about them.
"Kate, are you not gonna eat?" Milton asked her, noticing she was reading instead of eating her lunch.
"I will after I finish this chapter." Kate replied without looking at the red-haired boy.
From his place beside her, Jerry laughs. "You've been saying that every time one of us asked you last."
"Sorry," Kate shrugs, keeping her gaze on her book and flips the page so she could read the next one. "But my goal is to finish the Percy Jackson series during this month."
Eddie looks at her with raised eyebrows. "Even though you already read the series?"
Kate nodded, humming in response. She loved the Percy Jackson series ever since her mom had gave her the book series she had when Kate got interested in reading. Upon hearing a familiar voice she hasn't heard in years, she looked up from her book, her eyes widening when she spotted a familiar brunette-haired boy. She mentally scolded herself from hiding behind her book. Why is she hiding from her childhood best friend? She doesn't know the answer to that.
"Why are you hiding?" Milton questions. He glances in the direction Kate looked and saw the new kid getting his food. He nods in realization and looks back at the brunette-haired girl. "You're hiding from the new kid." He furrows his eyebrows. "Wait, why are you hiding from the new kid?"
"I don't know." Kate sighs, sitting up straighter and laid her book on the table. "It was more of an impulse." She glanced at Jack, seeing he was talking with Kim Crawford. Kate shared some classes with Kim and she thinks Kim is a nice girl. The two girls had to work on a project together which helped them got to know each other and they've become good friends.
"I just never thought I would see Jack again." Kate admitted. Sure, a few months after Jack left she thought that she and Jack would possibly reunite with each other one day, but she gave up on that when she and Jack stopped keeping in touch with each other. It wasn't on purpose. They both just got busy with their own lives and even sometimes forgot to check in with each other.
"Well, now you are." Eddie smiles. He glances over at Jack and calls out to him, "Hey, new kid."
Just before Jack looked over in the direction he heard someone talk to him, Kate had propped her book up and hid behind it again, giving Eddie a side glare which he ignored. Jack pointed at himself in question when he looked at Eddie, who gestured him over to the table. He smiled a bit as he walked over to the table.
"Uh, what are you doing, Eddie?" Jerry asks the dark-skinned boy sitting beside his left side. He points at the empty seat between Eddie and Milton Jack was going to. "We save that seat for cheerleaders, prom queens and supermodels." Kate couldn't stop the scoff from escaping her lips, but that earned a slap to the arm from Jerry.
Jack looks at the person sitting beside the dark-skinned boy known as Eddie with furrowed eyebrows, not being able to tell who it was because the person was hiding behind a book. "Well, I'm Jack." He introduces himself, tearing his gaze away from the person behind the book while he sat down. "So, how do you guys all know each other?"
"We're friends." Milton replies. He smiles. "We do karate together after school."
"We don't just do karate, Milton." Jerry interjects. He raises his fists. "These fists are registered weapons." He smirks. "In fact, I've already gotten a few calls about joining the Navy SEALS."
Kate chuckles and mutters, "In your dreams." Jerry looked at her with a glare and Kate childishly stuck her tongue at him, still hidden behind her book.
"She's right." Eddie agrees. "How could you even join the Navy SEALS when you're afraid of baby seals?" Jerry rolled his eyes in response.
Kate looks up from her book when Milton cried out after he got hit with something. She looked over in the direction the boys looked and saw Frank, who is a member of the Black Dragon Dojo. She assumed that he was the one who hit Milton because he was laughing along with his friends. She looked at Jerry and rolled her eyes when he laughed.
"That's awesome!" Jerry points at the table Frank and his friends sat at. "A kid from Black Dragon Dojo just waled you with-" He stops in the middle of his sentence with a gasp when he was hit with a falafel. He glares at Frank. "Not cool, man. Not cool."
Jack raises his eyebrows at Jerry and Milton. "Aren't you going to do anything?" When they didn't reply, he says, "Wait, I thought you guys knew karate."
"Yes, we do." Milton stands up, facing Frank and his friends. When they looked at him, he sits back down. "But they know it better."
"Not better than me." Kate spoke for the first time since Jack had joined the group.
Jack's eyes widens when he heard her voice and he looks at her to see she was still hiding behind her book. "Kate?" Kate lowers her book, putting a book mark in place as she awkwardly smiles at Jack. "Hi, Jack."
A smile tugs on Jack's lips. "I'm really glad I'm here."
Kate smiles back at him, feeling butterflies form in her stomach at seeing him smile at her. "Yeah, me too." She blurts out what she said next before she could stop herself. "I missed you."
Jack's smile widens and he nods. "I missed you too." He gestures to Frank and his friends with a nod of his head as he stands up. "Wanna help me take care of this?"
Standing up, Kate grins. "Yeah, let's show 'em how it's done." Sure, the Black Dragons kind of intimidated her, but she knew she was better than most of them at karate. And with Jack, she knew they could easily beat them together if they had to fight them which will probably happen.
"Hey," Jack greets while he and Kate walks over to the table Frank and his friends sat at. "I like your outfits." He smirks. "You guys, uh, cheerleaders?"
"No," Frank replies. He gestures to the dark-haired boy beside him. "Well, Brian used to be." Brian looked down as if he was in shame and covered his face and Kate raised her eyebrows, sharing an amused look with Jack. She didn't actually think that one of the Black Dragons used to be a cheerleader.
"So," Frank stands up, pushing back his chair. He faces Kate and Jack. "You two got a problem or something?"
Kate and Jack backs up a bit so they wouldn't get hit when Frank showed off what he could with his karate skills. "Frank, look, we didn't come here to fight." Kate shakes her head, raising her hands up in defense along with Jack. "We just wanted you to stop messing with our friends."
Frank scoffs. "What?" He chuckles as he looks at Kate. "Your friends can't stand up for themselves, so they send you to protect them?"
Kate glares at him and crosses her arms. She notices Jack had stepped forward, looking at Frank with an angry expression and seemed like he was going to throw a punch so Kate quickly put an arm out in front of him to stop him. "Look, we didn't come over here to fight." She was speaking to Frank and Jack this time. Jack relaxed, now standing beside her again, but he had his arms crossed and was looking at Frank with a glare. He didn't like how frank with talking about Kate or her friends.
Kate looks at Frank and sighs. "Just stop messing with my friends, okay?"
She glances at Jack and gestures with a nod of her head back to the table they sat at. "Come on." Jack nodded and they both turned to walk over to the table. They stopped walking when Frank threw a punch at them, but Jack stopped him. Kate's eyes widened upon seeing Frank's fist beside her head and she would've been punched in the face if it wasn't for Jack, who caught Frank's fist before he could hit her.
"Okay, you probably shouldn't have done that." Jack remarked. He twisted Frank's arm, turned him around, and then kicked him so hard Frank ended up flying backwards over the table he and the rest of the Black Dragon teens sat. The other boys who sat at the table had got up quickly when Frank was thrown over it and everyone was watching with wide eyes.
Kate notices Brian and one of the other Black Dragon boys were about to fight with Jack. "Jack, watch out!" She called out to him. He turned around just as Brian went to kick him and he blocked the kick. Kate moved over to fight the other boy, blocking his kick as well.
Jack saw another Black Dragon member had gone over to fight with Kate despite the fact she's still fighting with the same Black Dragon member who has tried to get to Jack. So, he took a chair from a nearby table, pushed it in front of him, and in the direction the boy heading to Kate was at. He then kicked the chair, causing the chair to hit the boy roughly. The boy stumbled and lost his balance, but he was quick to regain balance. He jumped over the chair, now deciding on firing with Jack instead of Kate, who just roundhouse kicked the boy she was fighting with to the floor.
Jack kicked the boy in the stomach after blocking his punch and the boy went flying backwards onto the chair. The rough impact caused the chair and him to fall to the ground. The other boy Kate fought with had gotten up went to fight with Jack while Brian fought with Kate.
Kate and Jack fought side by side, taking down the four Black Dragon members each time they went after the two of them. The fight got to the point where the cafeteria was a mess and everyone was either hiding or backed away to the side of the room so they wouldn't get in the middle of the fight. Kate had fought with a Black Dragon member that had tried going after Jack and sent him across a table, sending him onto the floor. Jack was now fighting with Brian. He ended up shoving Brian's face in pudding.
When Frank tried to punch Jack, he used Brian as a shield. Kate came up behind Frank and did a sweep kick to his legs, causing the curly-haired boy to fall to the ground. As she was doing that, Jack threw Brian into the trash can. He got back on his feet just when Kate noticed Frank had got up. Kate looked at a nearby table, noticing three falafels on one of the plates and got an idea.
She goes over to the table and looks at Jack. "Jack!" He looked at her with raised eyebrows when she said his name. She did a low kick to the plate that was hanging off the edge, causing the three falafels to fly up. Jack watched this with a grin, realizing what her idea is. He did a roundhouse kick to each falafel, sending them right to Frank and they each hit his face.
Jack looks at Kate with a grin and Kate grins back at him. "Nice job."
Jack shrugs. "It was your idea." He and Kate then did their handshake that they come up with.
Jack looks around the cafeteria with wide eyes, seeing how everyone had hidden or was standing off to the side and he noticed the mess he and Kate caused. A panicked look formed on his face and took one glance at Kate before he ran out of the cafeteria. Kate watched him leave with furrowed eyebrows. Kate's eyes widened when she looked around the cafeteria, just then realizing how much of a mess she and Jack made while fighting. She now understands why Jack left. He probably didn't want to get in trouble. She didn't either, but she was too much in shock to move.
Everyone got out of their hiding places, all confused and shocked at what just happened. Milton grins. "That was the most incredible thing I've ever seen in my life, and I've been to the Ice Capades."

After school, Kate was at the Bobby Wasabi Dojo. She sat on the floor, eating pizza with the boys. Kate had her Percy Jackson book she was reading earlier that day beside her. She, Jerry, and Milton were watching Marge the lunch lady take on Eddie. Kate lost count on how many times Marge had flipped Eddie over.
Jerry laughs. "Dude, Eddie just got dusted by the Marge the lunch lady again."
Kate didn't even realize her cousin had walked in until he speaks. "Guys, what are you doing?" She frowned when she heard how disappointed he sounded. She hated it when she disappointed people she cared about. She furrowed her eyebrows when she noticed two men in suits walk out of the dojo and then nodded in realization. She remembered that they came to talk to Rudy about the dojo. She wasn't for sure what it was all about since Rudy didn't tell her or the others.
Rudy points at the two men who just left. "They said that if we don't win two belts at our next tournament, they're shutting us down."
Kate's eyes widen. "What?" She frowns. "No, they can't shut this place down. We all love this place."
"I'm sure that you will easily help us win our belts at our next tournament so we don't have to get shut down." Milton chimed in, sending a smile to Kate.
"Thanks, Milton." Kate smiled brightly back at him, happy that he thought that.
"Yo, Rudy, you wanna win some belts?" Jerry asks. "You should get that new kid, Jack, in here."
Kate smiles and nods in agreement. "I mean, I think we're pretty good without him, but he would be a great asset to the team." She had to admit, it would be fun for Jack to be in the same dojo, and he would be a real help with them winning belts at tournaments. So far, she was the only one who was good enough to win at tournaments although sometimes the boys had a win here and there.
"It was awesome!" Eddie grins. "At lunch he and Kate took out four Black Dragons all by themselves."
Rudy looks at Kate with a bit of surprise. "Wait, really?"
Kate nods and smiles proudly. "Yep. We kicked their butts."
Rudy smiles, looking proud that she took on Black Dragons by herself along with some help. He then shakes his head and sighs. "But I don't care about some slap fight at school. Martial arts isn't about beating kids up in the lunchroom. It's about getting better through hard work and discipline."
Rudy then told them to start with warm-ups and everyone got into their position after cleaning the mat off. They each sat on the floor with Rudy standing off to the side. "Everyone focus."
It was silent for a few seconds, but then that silence was ruined when somebody literally crashed through the wall. Kate couldn't help but notice the person did a perfect side-kick when they crashed through the wall and she was impressed. She moved out of the way along with the others as they rolled onto the mat. Her eyes widened upon seeing the person is Jack.
"Jack?" She questioned as he got up.
He stumbles a bit before he regains his balance. He takes his helmet off, glancing around the place with confusion, and then his eyes locks with Kate which caused him to furrow his eyebrows. "Kate?"
"That boy just came right out the wall!" Marge shouted, looking at the Jack sized wall with wide eyes.
Kate points at him, looking at the Jack sized whole in the wall, having the same shocked expression as the others when they looked at the Jack sized whole in the wall. "You just crashed. Through the wall."
Jack glances at the whole in the wall he made and cringes. He looks back at her with a sheepish smile. "Yeah, sorry." He chuckles, looking at everyone with a grin. "But you guys have got to try that."
"Come here," Kate looks at the Jack sized whole in the wall to see one of the mall cops, pointing at Jack with an angry look on his face. "You."
A panicked expression forms on Jack's face upon noticing the cop. He glances at Kate with a sheepish smile. "Gotta go." He looks at Rudy, who he assumed was the owner of this place. "Sorry about the wall." Everyone watched with an awe-struck expression when he does a cartwheel, and a back flip on his way out to the front doors. He almost made it, but two mall cops caught him before he could leave.
Everyone had gotten up by now, watching the other mall cop who had been chasing Jack walk over to him. "Who was that kid?" Rudy asked with shock laced in his voice.
"Jack." Kate and the boys replied.
A look of realization forms on Rudy's face and he nods, dragging out the word he says. "Oh."
****
So, it turns out Jack joined the dojo, but only so he doesn't go to juvie. Kate knew that something Rudy told Jack had to be a lie because the last time she remembered if you broke a rule at the mall you weren't sent to juvie or jail. But Kate was still happy that Jack is now a part of the Bobby Wasabi Dojo because that meant they could spend more time together.
The next day Kate sat at a booth with the boys at Falafel Phills, sitting across from Jack and next to Jerry. Milton sat next to Jack and Eddie sat on a chair that he pulled over from a nearby table at the end of the table. Kate and Jack were telling Eddie, Jerry, and Milton about how they knew each other since the three boys didn't know that.
"Hey, Jack."
They each look over when they hear Kim speak. Jack was about to respond, but Eddie, Jerry, and Milton beat him to it, each of them putting emphasis on the word 'hello'. "Hello, Kim!"
Kate rolls her eyes at the three boys, who looked at Kim with smiles. "You idiots," She chuckles, shaking her head. "It's clear she wants to talk to Jack." The three boys just shrugged in response.
Kim sends a smile to Kate as a way of saying thank you for doing her best with trying to turn the boy's attention away from her. Kate smiles back at her and shrugs. She looks at Jack with a smile. "Um, can I talk to you for a minute?"
Eddie, Jerry, and Milton immediately replied, causing Kate to roll her eyes again. "Guys, can you give me a sec?" Jack asks, glancing at his friends with raised eyebrows. "Vamoose."
Kate nods, looking at him with a small smile. "Sure, Jack." She went to get out, only to realize Jerry was blocking her since she sat near the window. She pushed him and she let out an annoyed huff when he wouldn't move as he continued to smile at Kim along with Eddie and Milton.
Kate hits the back of Jerry's head to get his attention. "He wants us to leave, Jer, so get up."
Jerry turns his attention to her, looking at her with a small glare. "I know what 'vamoose' means!" He scooted out of the booth and stood up, starting to speak in Spanish angrily while Milton got up and Eddie moved the chair back to the table he got it from. Kate chuckled at Jerry and got up, following her friends to the door. She stopped though when Jack got her attention.
"Kate," She glances back at him and he smiles at her. "Thanks."
She smiles back at him and nods. "No problem." She teasingly smiles at him, subtly gesturing to Kim with a nod of her head. "Have fun." Jack rolled his eyes playfully, but Kate noticed his face had tinted pink which made her smirk. She thought that it was a possibility he has a crush on Kim and seeing the blush on his face confirmed her thoughts.
****
Kate looked over as she practiced karate on a dummy when she heard Jack talk. "Hey, guys." He walks further into the dojo, twirling around a bo staff in his hands. "Sorry I'm late. I was-"
Rudy walks over to him and interrupts him. "Sorry doesn't cut it, Jack." He furrows his eyebrows upon noticing the silver bo staff Jack held. "Wait, where did you get that astronaut bo staff?"
Jack grins. "It was a gift from the Black Dragons. See?" He twirls it around once before reaching to Rudy. "We can all use it."
Kate's eyes widened. He actually went over to the Black Dragon Dojo? Maybe Kim took him there since Kim is a member of the Black Dragon Dojo. She then wondered if Kim is trying to get Jack to join their dojo which made her worry. The Black Dragon Dojo didn't need another reason to be better than the Bobby Wasabi Dojo. The Bobby Wasabi Dojo could use Jack on their team a lot more than the other dojo.
Rudy raises his hands up with wide eyes and takes a step back. He pushes the bo staff away from him. "Ah, no. No, students from this dojo are forbidden from even entering the Black Dragon."
Jack looks at him in disbelief. "What? You can't forbid me from doing anything."
Kate stops practicing when an argument between Jack and Rudy started and she shared a worried look with Eddie, Jerry and Milton. "How could you betray me like this?" Rudy questions, looking at Jack with a frown. "If it wasn't for me, you would've been banned from this mail for two weeks." Kate nodded and cringed. Yep. She knew that Rudy didn't tell the whole truth to Jack. Rudy is known to lie sometimes.
Jack looks at him with an angered expression. "Banned from the mall?" He puts emphasis on the word 'juvie' expressing how angry he was at Rudy. "Wait, you said I was going to juvie."
Rudy scoffs, shaking his head with a nervous look on his face. "You know, I say a lot of things."
"A lot of stupid things." Kate corrected him, chuckling along with the boys.
"I'm what they call chatty." Rudy sends her a glare. "Not stupid." Kate just smiled at him and he rolled his eyes.
Jack points at Rudy, glaring at him. "You lied to me." His eyes widen. "You broke the Wasabi code!"
A shocked expression formed on Kate's face, not expecting her cousin to do anything like that. "What?" Rudy spoke in a high tone, looking at Jack with wide eyes. He stammered out something to say, clearly not knowing what to say.
Jack scoffs. "Kim was right, this place is a joke."
Ouch. That hurt Kate. She frowns, looking at him with a hurt expression, and she noticed the boys had a hurt expression on their faces as well. "I'm out of here." Jack turned to leave and Kate didn't even bother to stop him. Jack shoved the bo staff he got from the Black Dragons to Jerry as he walked to the front doors.
"Fine, go ahead." Rudy calls out to him. After Jack left, he turns to Kate and the boys and scoffs, pointing in the direction Jack went. "Who needs him?"
"We do." Kate and the boys answered.
A look of regret appears on Rudy's face. "What have I done?" He runs to the doors with a pleading look on his face. "Come back! Come back!" He opens one, continuing to yell. "Come back!"
