CHAPTER NINE, wax on, wax off
It was the All Wasabi Invitational which was a karate tournament and whoever won would be the number one dojo in the Bobby Wasabi chain. Most of Rudy's dojo has won a match and Jack was the last one to fight.
"It's all tied up." Rudy stands in front of the six teens who were sitting on a bench. "If we win the last match, we're the number one dojo in the Bobby Wasabi chain." He glances at Jack with a smile. "Jack, you're up. Are you ready?"
"Well, yeah, but I thought Bobby Wasabi was going to be here." Jack responded.
"People," Rudy scoffs. "Bobby can show up whenever he wants." Just as he said that, someone rang a gong. He smiles and nods. "Or he's here now." The gong was rolled out of the way by two of Bobby's ninjas while Bobby arrived on a two wheel scooter.
"Bobby, welcome!" Rudy greeted.
"I'm sorry." Bobby apologizes. "I...I was hoping to slip in unnoticed." He stops by his throne that's set up in front of the mats. "So, how much is my Pittsburgh dojo winning by, hmm?" He took his helmet off, handing it to one of his ninjas.
"Woah, woah, woah." Jerry stands up along with his friends and they all walk over to Bobby. He smirks. "For your information, we're kicking butt."
Bobby laughs, not thinking he was serious. "Oh, that's rich. Almost as rich as my labradoodle will be when I die." He continues to laugh, but then stops laughing after seeing the serious expressions on everyone's faces. He clears his throat. "Seriously, you're-you're winning?"
"I know, I couldn't believe it either." Kate admitted. She was surprised they were winning against some very good dojos. She didn't think they would get as far as they did in the match.
"If we win this last match." Rudy responded to Bobby.
"Well," Bobby smiles. "Let's do this!" He clapped and Kate and her friends (besides Jack and Rudy) walk over to sit back down on the bench while Rudy gave Jack a pep talk.
"Jack, you can do this. You wanna know why there's a heat wave outside? It's because you're on fire!" Rudy exclaimed, grinning at Jack.
Bobby must've mistaken what Rudy said, thinking there was an actual fire. He panics, standing up. "Fire! Celebrities first!" Immediately chaos happened. People screamed and everyone were running towards the exits.
"Wait, wait, wait! No, fire." Rudy reassures everyone with a sheepish expression on his face. "Just a pep talk." Everyone calmed down and goes back to their place they were at.
"Oh, well." Bobby clears his throat, standing in front of his throne and faces everyone. "Before the match begins, I have an announcement. This month, there will be an article on the principles of the Wasabi code in Karatefancy magazine!" He dramatically points at the magazine one of his ninjas now showed to everyone. "The winning dojo will receive a gift from me, and the winning sensei will appear on the cover with me."
Applause fills the room and Kate shares a smile with her friends. She honestly loved the Karatefancy magazine. It had the best dojos in the world in it and the fact that they could possibly be in it is just awesome. Rudy turns to face Kate, Kim, Jerry, and Milton with an excited smile. "Do you guys know what this means? If I'm on the cover with Bobby, people will finally know how great I am." The four teens look at him with an 'are you serious' expression. "And humble." Rudy quickly added with a sheepish smile on his face.
Bobby laughs excitedly. "This is going to be exciting. Evan, sausage me!" The ninja by the hotdog maker picks up one and threw it at the ninja by Bobby who held a hotdog bun and the hotdog landed right in the bun perfectly. The ninja then handed Bobby the hotdog and Bobby took a bite out of it once he had it.
Jack and his opponent got to their places on the mat and bowed to each other. The referee then told them to start and the fight started. Jack and the fighter from the other dojo were equally good, but Jack won in the end. The referee stepped forward when the fighter from the other dojo was on the ground and pointed at Jack, exclaiming that he was the winner. The dojo is erupted into cheers and applause. Kate stood up with her friends with a wide smile on her face, cheering along with everyone else.
"We did it, we won!" Rudy shouts happily as Jack high fives him and then each of his friends. "We're number one! Whoo!"
"Come on, Rudy." Milton urges, smiling at Rudy. "On our shoulders. Once around the dojo." He and Jerry go to pick Rudy up on their shoulders, but Rudy stopped them.
"No, no! At no point should my head be higher than Bobby Wasabi." Rudy reminded them.
Bobby walks over to the group with a grin. "Ooh, I love shoulder rides." He stands between Milton and Jerry. "Okay, kids, let's lift with the legs." The group of teens quickly ran away after he said that, no one wanting to be the one to lift him up.

Kate was in the dojo, practicing some karate moves by herself while Jack and Jerry sparred. Kate stops practicing when she notices Rudy and a mover guy walks in and that the mover guy was pulling in a big box. "Guys, the gift that Bobby sent us for winning the tournament is finally here." Rudy excitedly said.
Jack grins. "I'll get a crowbar."
"Oh, no need." Rudy stops Jack when he was about to go to his office. He points at himself. "Third-degree black belt." He smirks. "I'm always packing two." He then kissed both his biceps. He walked over to the box that was left alone since the mover guy had left by then. He knocked on the box a few times and then get in a fighting stance. He yelled before doing a karate punch to the box.
Kate's eyes widen when the box falls apart. She wasn't expecting that to do anything. She crosses her arms, smiling at Rudy. "Nice." She commented and Rudy smiled back at her.
Inside the box was a life size statue of Bobby Wasabi. Rudy seems to be the only one who likes the gift though. He giggles excitedly, standing by the statue with an awestruck expression. "It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
Jack puts his hands on his hips, staring at the statue with furrowed eyebrows. "Um, what is it?"
"It's a dude." Jerry deadpanned.
"Kind of a weird gift to get." Kate commented and the two boys beside her nodded in agreement.
Rudy looks at the three teens with offense. "It's not a dude or a weird gift. It's a piece of film history." He points at the statue. "This is a statue of Bobby Wasabi from his classic 1974 movie 'Dojo of Wax'."
"Okay," Jerry drags out the word, pointing at the statue with an uninterested expression on his face. "So it's a dude made of wax."
Kate points at him in a sign of agreement. "Exactly."
"I don't get it." Jack rolls his eyes. "How is this stupid statue supposed to show everyone that we're his number one dojo?"
Rudy covers the statue's ears, glaring at Jack. "Don't you dare talk in that tone! And when Bobby comes here for the picture tomorrow, you'd better act grateful." He then walked away to his office.
"Yo, this thing's kinda creeping me out." Jerry admits, walking to the other side of the dojo. "It's eyes are following me everywhere I go-Oh!" Since he had been walking backwards, he accidentally fell over the half wall that has some trophies on top of it, but luckily he missed the trophies so he didn't knock them over.
Kate's eyes widen and a look of concern forms on her face. "Jer, you alright?"
"I'm good!" Jerry replied.
****
To make it known to everyone that they are the number one dojo, Jack and Jerry decided on getting a sign for everyone to see. Kate didn't see the point of letting everyone know. She thought it only mattered and was special because only they knew and so did Bobby.
"Guys. Guys, I've asked you a hundred times. Keep the door closed, alright?" Rudy walks over, closing the door that was open. He points at the air condition unit. "I'm trying to keep the air conditioning in, alright?" He then points at the statue. "The statue's made of wax. I need to keep it cool in here." The three teens nodded and agreed to keep the door closed.
Kate apologetically smiles at him. "Sorry, Rudy."
"What's that?" Rudy asked when he noticed the sign.
"Oh, it's a sign we got from my uncle's junkyard." Jerry replies. "It used to hang over the men's store downtown."
Rudy glances at him with furrowed eyebrows after reading the sign. "'We're number one'?"
Smiling, Jack nods. "We didn't take the part that said 'in men's underpants'."
Kate chuckles. "I can't believe that's actually a sign."
Jerry crosses his arms and shakes his head. "I never understood why that store closed. They sold great underpants at a fair price."
"Okay. Well, what's the sign doing here?" Rudy questioned.
Jack scoffs, pointing at the statue. "That dumb statue isn't going to show anyone we won the tournament."
"Yeah," Jerry agrees. "It's our way of letting people know we're number one."
"Oh," Jack grins. "Especially cute girls who can read. That's right. I have a type."
Kate rolls her eyes and laughs, looking at him with an amused smile. "Come on, at least let us turn it on." Jerry said to Rudy. He smiles. "Let's see what it looks like lit up."
"Okay, fine." Rudy gives in. "Go ahead and plug it in." Jack and Jerry cheer and immediately go to plug it in. Jerry then went outside to check it. Kate had to admit it looked cool when it was lit up. But then electricity crackles around the outlet, causing Jack to back up. Kate's eyes widen and she glanced around with confusion when the lights and the air conditioning went off in the dojo.
"Oh, great." Rudy groans. "Your cruddy sign blew our power out."
Jerry walks inside, gesturing to the sign. "I think our cruddy sign blew the power out."
Kate looks at him with an amused smile. "Yeah, we know, buddy."
"And it's not just us. The power's out in the whole mall." Jerry explained.
"What?" Rudy's eyes widened.
"Yeah." Jerry nodded and Rudy quickly looked out the window.
A panicked expression forms on Rudy's face. "Oh, no. No, no, no! Oh, there's no air conditioning. And it's already getting warmer in here." He rushed over to the statue, followed by Kate, Jack, and Jerry.
"Oh, no. Oh, this isn't good." Jack comments, kneeling by the statue to read off the tag on it. Panic is evident in his voice the more he speaks. "'Exposure to temperatures above seventy-four degrees will cause statue to soften and result in permanent disfigurement.'"
Kate's eyes widen. "Yeah, that's not good."
Rudy whimpers. "That's it. My life is over." He looks at the three teens worriedly. "Bobby's going to be here in four hours for the photoshoot, and when he gets here, he's going to meet," He points at the statue with a frown. "Blobby."
Kate couldn't help the amused smile that forms on her face and while she covered her mouth to stifle a laugh, Jerry didn't as he chuckles. "Blobby Wasabi, that's-"
"Shut it, Jerry!" Rudy interrupts Jerry and the dark-haired boy grew quiet. "I can just kiss goodbye my cover of Karatefancy magazine." He starts sobbing, dropping to his knees. "This heat wave is going to kill Bobby Wasabi!"
"Okay," Kate rolls her eyes, putting her hand on her hip. "Now you're just being dramatic."
****
Kate, Jack, and Jerry have been fanning statue Bobby for the past few minutes to make sure he doesn't melt while Rudy continued to freak out. "Rudy, you've gotta calm down." Jack said. He smiles reassuringly at him. "We've just gotta figure this out, okay?"
Rudy stands up, pointing at Jack as he speaks in a stern tone. "Don't you dare tell me what to do!" He points at the statue. "Alright, just keep fanning Bobby."
The teens go back to fanning Bobby. It was already much hotter in the dojo than it was before and Kate figured it must be ten times hotter outside than inside. "Man, this is the worst heat wave this city's ever had." Jerry comments. "And because of us, everyone's air conditioning's out."
"No," Kate sassily interjects, pointing at Jack and Jerry. "Because of you two idiots. Rudy and I and the rest of the dojo had nothing to do with the power being out."
Jack sighs. "At least no one knows it's our fault."
"I know it was your fault!"
Kate glances at the door with surprise when Phil (the owner of Falafel Phill) barges into the dojo while yelling. She and the boys stop fanning, turning their attention to Phil, who points at each of them angrily. "You karate people, you did this! Because of your fancy underpants sign, my meat is going bad, and my goat is drinking out of the toilet bowl."
"Phil. Phil," Rudy puts a hand on Phil's shoulder, taking his hand off his shoulder when Phil faces him. "I tried calling an electrician, but they're all busy."
Phil nods, putting his hand on Rudy's shoulder. "Okay, you come with me to the roof. If I don't get the power back on, my wife will go crazy and miss the latest episode of 'The Real Housewives of Hakmakistan'."
Kate wasn't a fan of her cousin being on the roof, but she just hoped that he could help Phil get the power back on. "Rudy, be careful." She told him and he must've seen that she was worried about him because he smiled reassuringly at her and nodded.
"Rudy, what about the statue?" Jack asks Rudy. "What should we do?"
"Just take him some place cold." Rudy responds. "Alright, if it melts my dream of being on the cover of Karatefancy melts with it."
"Don't worry, nothing's gonna happen to this statue." Jack assures him. "All we gotta do is take it some place cold." He looks at Kate and Jerry with a smile. "Let's go, come on."
Kate raises her eyebrows, uncrossing her arms to put one hand on her hip when the two boys ran towards the door. Without the statue. "Boys!" They stop upon hearing her yell, turning to face her with furrowed eyebrows. "Forgetting something?" She gestured to the statue and their eyes widen before they sped walked over to get the statue.
"Right, we should probably bring Bobby with us." Jack realized.
Kate looks at him with a tight lip smile and nods in agreement. "Yeah, probably."
****
They first thought of taking the statue to the grocery store and put him in one of the freezers. Probably not the best idea, but the grocery store was the first place that came to mind. Kate just hoped no one would open the freezer the statue was in because she knew that would freak people out.
But a woman did happen to go to the freezer the statue was in and screamed loudly when she saw the statue. Kate ran over with the boys to assure her it's okay. "Ma'am, ma'am, ma'am, it's okay, it's okay." Jerry tries to calm her down and the woman stops screaming. "I put him there. He's not alive."
The woman gasps and began hitting Jerry with the pizza boxes she had grabbed from the freezer, causing Jerry to scream and cover himself. Kate winces and glances at Jack. "Yeah, I think one of us should've said something and not him."
"Oh yeah." Jack agreed, grabbing her wrist to pull her out of the way so she wouldn't get hit while the woman kept hitting Jerry.
*****
After that failed attempt, Jerry had bandages covering some cuts on his face and even a black eye. The boys suggested on taking the statue to the hockey rink since it was one of the coldest places in Seaford. Kate sat inside a penalty box beside the left side of Jack and Jerry sat beside the right side of Jack. Kate honestly enjoyed hockey, it was one of her favorite sports, so this was a bonus for her.
One of the players was sent to the penalty box the three teens were at with the statue. "Hey, puckweed, find another penalty box." Jerry stands up, looking at the hockey player with a threatening stare. Kate and Jack share a worried look and they stand up, trying to get Jerry to stop since they knew this hockey player would most likely beat him up. "This one's taken."
The hockey player threw the hockey stick down, threw off the gloves, and his helmet before he pushed Jerry up against the glass. Kate instinctively grabbed onto Jack's arm and in response he had grabbed on her hand. With shocked expression on their faces, they both quickly stepped on the bench when the hockey player pushed Jerry to the ground. Kate and Jack winced and grimaced as the hockey player started punching Jerry.
****
Next the trio went to the BayView Zoo, specifically the Penguin House which was the last coldest place in Seaford that the three teens could think of. Kate wasn't a fan of this place because it was freezing cold. It didn't help that she had been wearing shorts and a tank top since it was hot outside. But she and the boys had bundled up with winter jackets and hats before they went to the Penguin House so they wouldn't freeze to death.
Kate pulls the purple beanie she wore over her ears more and then puts her hands in the pockets of her winter jacket. She glanced at Jerry and shakes her head when she saw he was eating the fish that was for the penguins. She wasn't surprised to see him doing something crazy like that.
From his place beside Kate on the rock, Jack looks at Jerry with furrowed eyebrows. "I don't think you should be eating that fish. It's for the penguins."
"Oh, no, this little guy doesn't mind." Jerry smiles at the penguin on top of the rock beside him. He glances back at his friends. "See, that's the thing about penguins. They're very generous." He smiles at the penguin. "Right, little cutie?"
"He's gonna get attacked." Kate whispered to Jack and he nodded in agreement.
"Again." Jack adds. Something catches his eye and his eyes widen. "His mother doesn't seem too happy."
Kate glances in the direction he's looking at and she grimaces. "No, she does not."
"No, no, guys, trust me. These penguins are really-" Jerry's sentence was cut off by his own scream when the penguin's mother attacked him. He fell backwards off the rock, dropping the bucket of fish in the process.
"Called it." Kate muttered, preferring to her saying Jerry was going to get attacked.

Kate and the boys were now back at the dojo and Kate was thankful to see the power was back on. Just in time too because the photoshoot was going to happen soon. Kate was surprised to see a beach set up out front of the dojo, but she wasn't surprised to see Kim and Milton by it. She figured they had something to do it with it and after she saw their Hawaiian shirts she was certain they made the beach set up.
"Okay, you guys, this way." Jack said, gesturing Kim and Milton over. He and Kate guided the statue that's on a rolley platform to the dojo and Jerry rushed over to open the door for them.
"We did it!" Kate cheered once they were inside. She shared a smile with the boys and high fived them while Kim and Milton walked inside.
"Oh," Rudy laughs with relief upon seeing the statue didn't melt as he walks inside the dojo. Kate furrows her eyebrows, tilting her head to the side when she notices he's limping. "Bobby, you're back." Rudy smiles. "I'm so happy." He sits down on one of the chairs by the door. "I never thought I'd see you again."
"Rudy, why are you limping?" Kate asked her cousin.
"Nothing much." Rudy waves a dismissive hand. "Just fixed the power, got blown off the roof, laned in front of the veterinary hospital." He smiles. "Nice people. They patched me up and gave me a coupon for a free flea bath."
Kate looks at him with shock. "You got blown off the roof?!" She looks at him worriedly, hoping that the only injuring he had was that he was limping. "Are you okay?"
Rudy chuckles and shakes his head. "I'm fine, Kat. I'll just be limping for a while." Kate calmed down and nodded.
"Hey, where's your shoes?" Kim asked when she noticed Rudy wasn't wearing shoes.
Rudy glances down at his feet with confusion. "I have no idea." He looks at Jerry with wide eyes when he saw Jerry's face was covered in cuts and some cuts were on his arm too. He points at him. "What happened to him?"
Jerry groans in response and sits beside Rudy. "Old lady, hockey player, angry penguin." Jack answered.
Rudy nods in understanding. "We've all been there."
A confused look forms on Kate's face. "Pretty sure none of us but Jerry has been there."
"Guys, Bobby's going to be here in one hour for the photoshoot." Milton chimed in.
Rudy stands up, glancing up at the clock above the door. "He's right." He glances at the five teens as Jerry stands up. "Everyone put on your gi's. I want you all sparring when Bobby gets here."
****
A few minutes later, Kate ran out to the entrance where the statue as kept after hearing Jerry's loud scream. Along with her friends, they were now earing their gi's. Kate's friends followed her, all shocked and surprised to see the statue melted.
"I can't believe it. How did this happen?" Jack inquired.
Rudy walks over, wearing his gi as well, and he kneels beside the melted statue with a sad expression. "Oh, oh, Bobby. Oh, Bobby. I-It's not so bad. Your legs just got a little soft, that's all. We'll just go call the doc. He'll fix you up. He'll fix you up real good." He looks at the five teens with worry. "I can't tell if I'm talking to his face or his butt."
Jerry leans forward to get a closer look. "I think it's a little bit of both."
"I don't get it." Kim glances around with confusion. "It's cool in here." She gestures to the air conditioning. "The-The air conditioning is back on."
"Wait," Kate's eyes widen when she notices something outside on the beach set up. She walks over to the door to get a better look. "There's a reflector on the beach, causing the sun to bounce off of it and it's aimed in this direction."
"There's nothing left but a melted mound of man." Rudy cries. "It should have been me! It should've-" He stops yelling when he notices Bobby walking inside the dojo with his photoshoot team. "Bobby, you're early."
Rudy and the five teens quickly stand in front of the melted mess of statue to hide it. "How is my number one dojo?" Bobby smiles and everyone nervously smiles back at him. Bobby puts a hand on Rudy's shoulder. "Rudy, are you ready for our picture?" He faces the teens blocking sight of the melted statue and takes his hand off Rudy's shoulder, gesturing for the teens to move out of the way. The five teens hesitantly move out of the way and Bobby gasps loudly when he saw his melted statue. "Is that the statue that I gave you?"
"I honor this dojo with a gift." Bobby frowns, pointing at the melted statue. "And this, this is how you repay me?" Rudy and the five teens look away with guilty expressions. Bobby looks at Rudy with disappointment. "I thought you'd turned this dojo around, but I was wrong." Rudy looks at him with sadness. "There will be no cover of Karatefancy for you." Bobby told him. He flipped his hair over his shoulder and turned to walk out the door.
"Wait!" Jack shouts, causing Bobby to stop and turn to face him. "It wasn't Rudy. It was me. I put up a weird number one sign because I wanted everyone to know that we won the tournament. And it caused a blackout." Then the rest of his friends chimed in with explaining how it was also their fault.
"I'm confused!" Bobby yells. "Who is responsible for melting me?"
"I am." Rudy and the five teens answers. Rudy glances at the five teens with a thankful smile. "Guys, thanks, but this is my dojo, and I'm responsible for what happens here."
"Bobby, with all due respect," Kim walks over to stand by Rudy with a smile. "Rudy is a great sensei." She rolls her eyes. "Boo-hoo, we melted your man candle." She puts her hands on her hips and demands, "Get over it!"
"Well, maybe you're right..." Bobby's voice trails off, glancing at Kim with a scared expression. "Little cute, terrifying girl. But what I just saw here..." Bobby gestures to Rudy and his dojo members. "Is what the Wasabi code is all about." He stands beside Jerry, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Honor." He moves on to Milton and Jack. "Friendship..." Then Kim and Kate. "And Loyalty."
Bobby shakes his head with a confused expression on his face. "I'm not quite sure how the underpants fit in or why that one has a dog bow in his hair." He points at Jerry, who had a pink dog bow in his hair. "But I do know..." He walks over to stand in front of Rudy with a smile. "This dojo is number one." The five teens smile at each other. "And you're right, Jack." Bobby said to Jack. He smiles. "Everyone should see that."
Everyone tries to stop Bobby as he goes over to turn on the sign. Bobby turns on the sign and he backs away when electricity crackles around the outlet and then the power and air conditioning turned off. "Looks like your cruddy sign blew out the power." Bobby observes. He walks over to the group while laughing. After he laughs for a few more seconds, he smiles and waves at the group. "Bye." He quickly left with his photoshoot team.
****
The dojo eventually got the photoshoot and Rudy got his picture taken with Bobby for the cover of the magazine. For Rudy it was the highlight of his life. The power was still out though, but Phil somehow was the only one who had power. It turns out that Phil has been using a goat on the treadmill to have power and that Phil is the one who stole Rudy's shoes the other day for his goat.
A/N i felt so bad for what jerry went through in this episode tbh. but you guys the humor in this show is topnotch, i always thought this was such a funny show !!
