CHAPTER FOURTEEN, the wrath of the swan

The Swan's Court Cotillion was just around the corner and Kate didn't plan on going, until Kim pressured her into asking someone to go. Ashton Talbot, a new boy who moved to Seaford a few weeks ago, hit it off with Kim and since he moved to Seaford the two have been hanging out. Ashton asked Kim to the cotillion and Kim was wanting Kate to be there for moral support. So because of being good friends with Kim, Kate was reluctantly going to ask someone to be her date.

"Look, there's Jack." Kim points over to the boy using the peg board as she and Kate walks into the main part of the dojo from leaving the locker room. She smiles. "Go ask him."

"What?" Kate's eyes widen and she stops in the hallway, grabbing Kim's arm to pull her back since the blonde kept walking forward. She ignores the fact that she could feel blush creeping up her neck. "I-I'm not gonna ask him."

Kim furrows her eyebrows as Kate let go of her arm. "Why not?"

"He's my best friend. If I asked him to the cotillion it would be weird." Kate replies. She shakes her head. "Besides he doesn't like events like cotillion anyway so he would probably say no. And even though I know you're going with Ashton, I just thought you liked him. And I wouldn't wanna go out with a boy that you liked."

Kim smiles softly. "That's sweet, Kate. I wouldn't go out with a boy that you liked either." Kate returns the soft smile and nods. "But don't worry, I don't like Jack that way." The blonde grins. "I only got eyes for Ashton." Kate looks relieved, earning a chuckle from Kim. "Come on, there's no harm in just asking, right? What's the worst that could happen?"

"It would embarrass me and possibly make things awkward and weird between us." Kate looks at her with a pleading expression. "Please don't make me ask him."

"Too late." Kim smirked, earning a confused look from Kate until the brunette yelped as Kim pushed her into the main part of the dojo.

Kate stumbles slightly until she caught her balance, glancing over her shoulder at Kim with a glare. Kim smiles and gestures for her to walk over to Jack. Kate huffs in annoyance and walks over to her best friend. She takes a deep breath in an attempt to calm her nerves and smiles at her best friend. "Hi, Jack."

Jack glances at her with a smile as he jumps down from the peg board. "Hey, Rina. Check out the new peg board. It is a great upper body workout."

Kate looks at the peg board with a grimaced expression. "Yeah, no thanks. I don't know why," She points at the peg board. "But Rudy has been using it to dry out his sweaty socks."

Jack's eyes widen and he stares at the pegs he held with disgust. "Oh, I knew these pegs smelled feety."  He shook his head and put them back on the board, continuing to use the board.

Kate nervously glances over at Kim, who stood near the entrance from the hallway. The blonde smiles encouragingly at her and gave her two thumbs up. Kate nods, looking back at Jack with a nervous smile. "So, um, Jack, would you wanna hang out Saturday night?"

"Yeah, sure," Jack replies. "What do you wanna do?"

"Oh, I don't know." Kate shrugs, mentally preparing herself for Jack's reaction. "Maybe go to this thing called the cotillion ball." She grimaced when Jack fell off the board, groaning in pain when he landed on the floor.

"If you didn't wanna go you could've just said no." Kate muttered, slightly hurt by his reaction. She knows he just fell off because he was probably surprised by her asking him to go to the cotillion, but part of her wondered if it was maybe because he was disgusted at the thought of going to the cotillion with her.

"Look, Kate," Jack sighs as he gets off the floor. "You know I hate those kind of things. I hate tuxedos, I can't dance, oh, and another thing. I'm a dude." He shakes his head. "Dudes don't do cotillions."

Kate rolled her eyes and shrugged, trying to not portray that she was a bit hurt by him declining her offer. She knew he would say no so why was she hurt? At this time, Kim walked further into the dojo, noticing the sadness Kate was trying to hide. She wanted to comfort her. She felt bad because now she was hurt because of her. She thought that Kate and Jack liked each other and so she figured them going to the cotillion together would help them confess their feelings. Kim stood by Kate, throwing her arm over her shoulders and sending her an apologetic look. Kate shook her head, smiling reassuringly at her while she wrapped her arm around Kim's waist.

"Hey." Milton greeted as he and Jerry walked inside.

Jack gestures with a nod of his head to Milton and Jerry, beginning to walk back over to the peg board. "They probably don't have anything to do this Saturday."

"Actually we got roped into going to the Swan's Court Cotillion." Milton explained.

Kim raises her eyebrows. "What? Really? You guys are going to the cotillion?" She asked, glaring at Jack, who looked at her with confusion. He didn't know why she was suddenly hostile with him.

"My mom's making me take her boss' dorky daughter." Milton spoke while Jack got on the peg board.

Jerry crosses his arms. "And I'm taking her dorkier friend."

Kate exchange a confused look with Kim and then glances at Jerry with confusion. "Why?"

"Oh, because Milton's giving me sixty bucks and letting me watch his turtles go at it." Jerry smiled.

Rudy walks out of his office, smiling when he noticed Jack on the peg board. "Ah, Jack, glad you're up there. The old swamp foots kicking up something fierce. Hang up this pair of socks to dry for me, would ya?" He rolled up the socks, throwing it up to Jack.

Jack groans in disgust. "Ugh, they're all wet!"

"It's just a pair of socks, dude." Jerry scoffs. "Man up." His eyes widens when the socks suddenly landed in his mouth. He takes the socks out and screams, but after a few seconds he stops screaming and nods. "It's actually kind of nice."

Kate's face scrunches up with disgust. "Gross."

At school the next day, Kate was in line getting lunch when Frank stopped her from going to sit down with her frowns. Kate glanced behind her, seeing a Black Dragon member behind her in line which meant she was trapped. She looked at Frank and rolled her eyes.

"What do you want?" She asked in annoyance.

"We just wanted to let you know, Kate," Frank glares at her. "We haven't forgotten how you disrespected us when you chose the Wasabi Warriors over the Black Dragons."

Yeah, the thing is before Kate decided on a dojo everyone thought she would go with the Black Dragons because that's the dojo her dad went to when he was her age. They thought she would follow in his footsteps, but she didn't. She chose her own path and her dad respected that and was more than fine with her decision. It seemed as though the Black Dragons didn't like her decision.

"You know what they say about payback." Frank said in an intimidating tone.

Kate didn't look intimidated and in fact she looked amused. "You just punched your meatloaf." She points at the meatloaf on his tray. She smiles at him with amusement as he looked down at his tray with wide eyes. "Was that the whole payback ordeal?" Frank glared at her and quickly walked away with his friends following him.

Kate sat down at an empty table and began eating her lunch. She chose not to sit with the boys because she might still be a bit upset with Jack for declining her offer. "Hey," Jack greets, sitting beside her. He smiles. "I stole you the last piece of chocolate cake since I knew it's your favorite."

As sweet as she thought the gesture was, Kate shakes her head, pushing the plate away. "Thanks, but I got an apple."

Jack frowns, his shoulders dropping in defat. "I know you're mad about the cotillion, but trust me you do not want me there. My manners are horrible." He raises his right index finger and grins. "At any moment, this finger could be in any hole in my face."

Kate giggles, rolling her eyes. "Jack, I'm not mad, alright? We're good."

"Yeah?" Jack raised his eyebrows, smiling slightly.

"Yeah." Kate smiled at him and he sighed with relief.

"Okay, good."

"Kate, there you are!" Kim shouted excitedly, rushing over to the table dragging a boy with her as Ashton followed them with an amused expression on his face. "This boy," She pauses when she realized she didn't know his name. She lets go of his arm, glancing at the dirty blonde-haired boy. "What's your name, hon?"

"Brody." Brody introduced himself and smiled.

Kim nods, smiling at Kate. "Brody wanted to ask you to the cotillion." She grins, gesturing for Brody to ask her. "Go on, ask."

Ashton chuckles, putting a hand on her arm and gently pulls her back. "Maybe we should leave them alone. I don't think anyone ever does good with asking someone out with people watching them."

"Fine." Kim huffed and she and Ashton walked over to the table with the rest of Kim's friends were at.

"So," Kate couldn't help the excited smile that formed on her face as she glances at Brody. "You wanted to ask me something?" She didn't know why she was excited about the cotillion all of a sudden. Maybe it was because a cute boy took notice of her and wanted to ask her out. She doesn't remember the last time she was asked out on a date by a cute boy so this giddy feeling was kind of new to her.

Brody smiles at her. "Will you be my date to the cotillion?"

"Sure." Kate giggled, earning an annoyed look from Jack. He didn't like it that another boy was the reason she giggled.

"So you're really going to a cotillion?" Jack asked Brody in disbelief.

"Yeah," Brody grins and stands up. "Kinda like putting on a tuxedo," He then dances a bit. "And dancing the right away with my favorite lady." He put his hand on the back of Kate's chair to lean on it, putting his other hand on his hip as he smiled down at Kate. Kate smiled back at him with a dreamy smile.

Jack furrows his eyebrows, staring at Brody with disbelief. "You've been here for three seconds. How is she your favorite lady?"

Kate glares at him. "He said I'm his favorite lady so shut up." Jack looked at her with surprise, not expecting her to snap at him or to be so happy about this stranger saying she was his favorite lady. She looked back at Brody with a dreamy smile and giggled as he smiled back at her. Jack rolled his eyes at the interaction.

Later that day, Brody and Kate were at the dojo practicing the waltz. "Okay, I just wanna apologize in advance if I step on your toes." Kate comments, sheepishly smiling at Brody. "I never waltzed before so I'm new to this."

"Really?" Brody looks at her with surprise. He smiles softly at her. "Could've fooled me." Kate blushed faintly and smiled at him.

The two teens were too busy dancing and staring at each other with smiles to notice Jack walking into the dojo. "What?" Jack's eyes widen when he caught sight of the two. "Woah, woah." Jack rushes over and turns off the classical music, causing Brody and Kate to stop dancing and look at him with confusion. "What's going on in here?"

"Dancing." Kate replied in a duh tone.

"Yeah, not in here, you're not." Jack argues. "This is a dojo, not a dance studio." Kate rolls her eyes and begins to walk away along with Brody. Jack drops his duffle bag on the floor, quickly joining the two. He raises his eyebrows at Brody. "You ever been in a karate dojo before, Brody?"

"Actually, this is my first time in a dojo." Brody admitted. Jack nodded and hummed in response.

Kate gets her phone out of her pocket whenever it buzzes and she smiles slightly. "That's Kim. Apparently she found the perfect dress for me and wanted me to come check it out and try it on." She glances at the boys with a smile. "I'll see you guys later." She said, beginning to walk backwards towards the exit. "Try not to kill each other, please?" She added in a pleading tone, noticing Jack acting annoyed with Brody.

"No promises." Jack mumbled under his breath. He forces a smile, pointing over at some boards put on two cement blocks. "Excuse me. I'm gonna get to work." He then karate chopped the three boards.

Brody smiles, crossing his arms as he looks at him with an impressed expression. "Woah. Wow, three boards." He shrugs. "I don't know anything about karate, but that's pretty impressive."

Jack wipes the dust off his hands with a smug look on his face. "Yep, that's how I roll." He points towards the direction of the locker room. "I'm gonna go change."

"See you around, Jack." Brody said and Jack waved goodbye as he walked away. After making sure Jack left, Brody chuckled, picking up four boards and put them on the cement blocks.

"How about four boards?" Brody questioned and got ready to break them. Jack was walking back since he realized he forgot something, but he stopped with a shocked look on his face as Brody broke four boards.

Jack scoffs as Brody left. He walks over to the broken boards, picking one up. He rolls his eyes and glares in the direction Brody was walking. "Don't know anything about karate, huh?"

It was now time for the cotillion. Everyone was dressed up and most of the guests were waltzing while others were talking with each other. Kate and Brody were waltzing in the middle of the group, Ashton and Kim waltzing near them. Kim wore a light pink short dress with her blonde hair pulled up in a cute style. She had a pink corsage and wore light pink flats that matched her dress. Ashton wore a black and white tux with a light pink tie that matched the color of Kim's dress.

(this is the outfit kate wears at the cotillion)

Kate wore a floral printed dress that reached her thighs. The flower colors on the dress consisted of purple and green. She wore light green earrings that matched the green on the dress, a silver necklace along with a silver anklet, and black platform heels. She would never wear normal heels. Those things would hurt her feet and she was wary about the platform heels, but Kim convinced her to wear them. Kate's hair was curled, two strands left out while the rest of it was pulled into a high pony tail, her makeup was done nicely, and she painted her finger nails and toenails black to match the main color of her dress and shoes. Brody was wearing a black and white tux with a corsage pinned on, the color of the flower being a mixture of purple and green to max Kate's dress.

"I gotta admit, I didn't think I would enjoy being at this cotillion Kim kina forced me to go to, but I'm having the best time." Kate admits, smiling fondly at Brody. "And I feel like the reason I'm having the best time here is you."

"Same here." Brody smiles at her. "And it's going to get even better. Somebody nominated us for King and Queen of the Swan Court."

"Wait, really?" Kate gasps, staring at him with surprise. "H-How? They're so many Black Dragons here, they'd never vote for me."

Brody looks at her fondly. "I don't know. I think we got a shot."

When the slow song ended, everyone on the dance floor stopped dancing and applauded. A upbeat song played on the speakers next, earning an excited gasp from Kim. Kim claps and grins excitedly. "Oh, yeah, this is my jam!"

Everyone backs up, watching with amusement as Kim dances. "Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!" Ashton cheered her on and joined in, dancing right beside her, not caring if people were looking at them weirdly for dancing crazy. From where she stood by Brody, Kate smiled at the two teens, happy that Kim found someone that would dance with her and not judge her for her crazy dancing.

"This year's King and Queen of the Swan's Court are..." The woman at the microphone opens the envelope she held. She gasps, smiling at the crowd. "Brody and Kate."

Everyone applauds and cheers for Brody and Kate. "Seriously?" Kate asks in disbelief, standing up with a wide smile on her face. She and Brody had been sitting at a table with Ashton and Kim and some other students. "I can't believe this is happening!"

"You better believe it, girl!" Kim cheers, sharing a smile with Kate. She gestures for the brunette to go on stage. "Now go get that crown before I do." Ashton chuckled, smiling at Kim with amusement.

Kate smiles brightly, sharing a smile with Brody before they both walk on stage. The woman at the microphone now held the queen's crown, smiling at Kate. Thanks to Rudy, Jack borrowed a tux from him and rushed to the building the cotillion was being held at. He arrived at the cotillion just as the woman handed Kate a rose. He assumed since she and Brody were on stage that meant they won queen and king and while he was happy Kate won, he was more worried about what the Black Dragons planned on doing to her. He noticed Jerry and Milton nearby and rushed over to them.

"Jack, the Black Dragons are here to get revenge on Kate and Kim." Milton explains and Jack's eyes widen. "We thought it was it to get revenge on Kate since she didn't pick their dojo, but we overheard them in the bathroom and they said they planned on getting revenge on Kim too for changing dojos."

"I knew they were getting revenge on Kate, but I didn't know about Kim." Jack said with surprise. "I'm just tryin to figure out how."

"Dude, they locked us in the closet." Jerry angrily spoke.

"And now, for the presentation of the crowns by our grand swan." The woman announced. Classical music played as she gestured to the right where a swan float was being driven into the room. On top of it there was a blue pillow with the crowns on it.

No one knew that Frank was the one driving the swan, but Jack was starting to figure it out. His eyes widened as he noticed the opening on the swan and how the swan was basically aimed at Kate. Then he saw the gravy dripping from the swan's mouth. It was obvious the Black Dragons planned on spraying something on her. He wasn't going to let that happen.

"It's the swan!" Jack pointed, telling Jerry and Milton the plan. He ran forward, jumping in front of Kate just as Frank sprayed the gravy.

Even though Jack jumped a little too early, he still got hit with most of the gravy that was sprayed. Kate gasped, her eyes widening in shock as she watched Jack jump in front of her. She didn't even know he was there, but now she was relieved he was. She grimaced, closing her eyes when some of the gravy hit her and Brody.

Frank was upset that Kate wasn't on stage since he planned on spraying both her and Kate, but he still called this plan successful. He laughed as some of the guests screamed after the gravy was shot at Kate and Brody.

"Why am I covered in gravy?" Kate angrily asked.

Jack stands up, glaring at Brody. "Kate, Brody's a Black Dragon. He set you up."

Kate's heart drops when he said that and she looks at Brody with hurt in her eyes. "Really?" She frowned and his eyes widened, looking at her with regret

"No. Kate, I had no idea, I..."

Kate shakes her head, turning away from him and he stops talking, getting the signal she didn't want to listen to him anymore. Turning around was a big mistake because then Frank sprayed gravy at her again, causing her to yelp and looked down with surprise. Everyone gasped when the gravy was sprayed again, some backing away.

"Oh," The woman holding the microphone chuckles. "You look horrible."

"Hey, that's my friend you're talking about!" Kim angrily yelled as she stood. No one got to insult her friend and get away with it. Ashton quickly stood, wrapping his arm around her shoulders to hold her back. While he didn't like what the woman said about Kate, he knew it wouldn't be good to create a scene.

Kate glares at the woman, taking a step forward. The only thing holding her back was Jack, who grabbed onto her arm to pull her back. "Well, at least I'm horrible 'cause I'm covered in gravy. What's your excuse?"

Then the woman shrieked when she was suddenly sprayed with gravy and the woman fainted out of shock. Frank then jumped out of the swan float and got on stage. The woman along with the others who were on stage left, leaving just Kate, Brody, and Jack as more Black Dragons got on stage.

Frank smirks. "Looks like we've got you outnumbered six to two."

Jerry jumps onto the stage, falling in place next to Jack. "Three."

Milton quickly ran over, standing next to Jerry. "Four."

"Six." Ashton added, counting himself and Kim as he and Kim joined the others on stage, standing by Milton.

Brody steps away from the Black Dragons, standing by Kate, looking at Frank with a glare. "Seven."

Kate glanced at Brody with surprise, not expecting him to help her and her friends. But she smiled, happy that he decided to get on the right side. Even though Brody set Kate up, she knew that he had a good heart since it seemed like he regretted what he did. She didn't want him to end up at a dojo like the Black Dragons so she was relieved to see him teaming up with her and her friends.

"Ha," Kate crosses her arms, smirking at Frank. "Now it looks like you're outnumbered."

Frank glares at Brody. "You just made a big mistake." He went to throw a punch at Kate, but Brody stepped in front of her, catching Frank's fist and twisted his arm. He then kicked Frank's stomach, causing Frank to groan in pain as he fell off the stage. Brody jumped off the stage to continue the fight with Frank as the friend group started fighting the Black Dragons.

Jack kicked one off the stage that was running towards Kate and Kate smiled thankfully at him. Jack then jumped off the stage to continue fighting with that Black Dragon member. After seeing a Black Dragon member heading towards to Kim to fight her, Ashton stepped in front of her, side kicking the boy in the stomach which sent him stumbling backwards. He continued fighting with that Black Dragon member while Kim fought with another one. Meanwhile, Jerry and Milton stood side by side, jumping off the stage at the same time to fight with two Black Dragon members that ran towards them.

Noticing one boy was left on the stage with her, Kate realized he was a Black Dragon member. Kate glared at the boy, kicking his leg which made him stumble backwards since he wasn't prepared. The boy goes to kick her, but she blocked the kick with the metal rose that she was given. She then swung the metal rose at the boy's head, growing upset when the boy ducked. The two continued to fight a few more seconds before Kate got the upper hand by using her metal rose to swing at his legs, causing him to lose balance and fall off the stage. He landed on the floor roughly and groaned in pain. Kate smiled sweetly, twirling the metal rose.

Meanwhile, Jack ducked from a punch a Black Dragon member threw at him and side kicked another member that ran at him. That boy fell backwards into the table that was at the front on the left side of the room. He punched the other boy, who blocked his punch, and just as he was going to punch him again, another Black Dragon member came up behind him. Jack's eyes widened with surprise as the boy turned him around, grabbing his arm and began to twist it. Jack quickly got out of his grasp and kicked him backwards instead.

Near the edge of the stage, Jerry and Milton fought with a Black Dragon member, sending him crashing onto a table. Jack continues to fight with the boy who had snuck up behind him, the other two boys backing away. Jack ends up winning this fight, flipping the boy over and onto the floor. Jack smirked, flipping the green and black cape over his shoulder smugly before he put his hands on his hips.

Brody was fighting with Frank across the room and he was obviously winning the fight. Frank ends up rolling on top of a table after  Brody kicked him towards it. Frank stands up, glaring down at Brody. Brody glares back at him, reaching forward to grab the table cloth and he pulled it out from under Frank, hoping it would flip Frank off the table. However, Frank jumped just as Brody pulled the table cloth off. Brody paused for a few moments, figuring out what to do next. He lifted up the table, sending Frank flying off of it. He set the table down with a smirk as Frank landed beneath the swan where he was sprayed with gravy.

Ashton gets out of the swan float, revealing he was the one who sprayed the gravy on Frank. He grins at Frank. "Hope you like gravy."

Kim stands by Ashton, smiling widely at him and putting a hand on his shoulder. "That was a great idea, Ash." Ashton thought that spraying Frank with the gravy was a great way to get back at him and he was glad he had the perfect opportunity to do that.

Ashton smiles brightly at her. "Thanks, Kim."

"I didn't know that you could fight like that." Kim admitted.

"I didn't either." Ashton laughs. He shrugs. "I guess after watching a lot of karate movies and tv shows and playing karate video games you learn something."

Everyone applauded for Kate and her friends when the fight was over. Everyone went back to doing their own thing while Jack steps over the Black Dragon members that laid on the floor, walking over to where Kate stood. He grins. "Looks like the Black Dragons messed with the wrong Swan Queen."

"Got that right." Kate grinned.

Brody walks over to Jack and Kate with an apologetic look. "Guys, I'm sorry. I guess I was kind of a jerk, huh?"

Jack nods. "Yeah, you kinda were." After Kate shot him a look that read 'give him a break', Jack quickly adds, "But you did come through in the end." Brody nodded and smiled before he walked away.

"Well," Kate looks down at her ruined dress. "I'm officially a mess." She sighed, walking over to a nearby table.

Jack shrugs, following her to the table. "I don't know. I think brown's a good color on you."

"Oh, thanks." Kate chuckled, pulling a chair out to sit down. She went to set the crown on the table, but Jack took it from her.

"Give me that." Kate smiles softly as she sits down. Jack returns the smile, setting the crown on her head before he sits down by her. "Kate, I'm sorry. None of this would have happened if I had said yes when you asked me to go with you."

"It's okay." Kate reassures him. "All that matters is you're here now." Jack nods in agreement, sharing a smile with her. Kate then takes this time to look at the tux she had, just then realizing how ridiculous it was. "Okay, where the heck did you get that tux?"

"Oh, Rudy lent it to me." Jack stands, smiling as he glances at the suit. "I don't know. I kinda like it." When he moved his arms, fake flowers slipped out of his right sleeve, earning surprised looks from him and Kate.

"Uh, where'd the flowers come from?" Kate inquired.

"I have no idea." Jack replied. He smiled at Kate, handing them to her. She chuckled, smiling as she took the flowers.

Noticing the crown for the king of the Swan Court laying by, Kate reaches over to pick it up. "I don't think Brody will need this anymore." Kate set the flowers down, turning to face Jack. She stood, smiling as he bent down slightly so she had better access to put the crown on him.

Jack stands up straighter and chuckles. "Here's something I never thought I'd say..." He smiles nervously at her. "You wanna dance?"

Kate glances at him with surprise, her lips forming into a smile. "Yeah, I'd love to." She walked to the dance floor along with Jack and they began waltzing to the slow music playing. The best friends could care less that they were the only ones dancing. All that mattered was that they were enjoying being together.

Then whenever upbeat music came on, Kim walks onto the dance floor with a grin and Ashton follows her. "Oh, yeah!" Kim cheered while Kate and Jack stepped away from each other. Kate was looking at her friend with amusement while Jack had an annoyed look on his face

"Oh, no." Jack muttered, chuckling when Kate elbowed him as a way to scold him and playfully glared at him.

"Finally, something I can move to." Kim grins. She poses, missing the fond look on Ashton's face as he looks at her. "Now, this is my jam." She then began dancing crazily and Kate laughed.

"Yeah, okay, let's dance crazy. The waltz is boring anyway." Kate commented, beginning to dance crazy along with Kim, who grinned at her.

"This is the kind of dancing I can do." Ashton chimed in, joining the girls.

"Whatever." Jack sighs, smiling at Kate. "You're the queen." He then began dancing crazily along with his friends. Soon enough everyone else joined the small group on the dance floor, dancing however they wanted to.
