CHAPTER EIGHT, all the wrong moves

Kate was sitting at a table with her friends in the cafeteria at lunch when Jerry ran over to them. "Guys, I got us the opportunity of a lifetime. We're gonna be rich!" Jerry grinned, setting down an iPod speaker on the table.

"For the last time, your mom's car has a leak." Milton reminds him. "There's no oil under your house."

"No," Jerry rolls his eyes. "I signed us up for The Battle of the Dance Crews competition at the mall." He shows the flyer he held to his friends. "Check it."

Kim's eyes widen. "Woah, first prize wins a thousand dollars."

"It's not just about the money. I've always loved dancing. You know, when I was a baby, my mom hung a disco ball over my crib." Jerry smiled.

Jack chuckles, standing up. "Did it ever fall on your head?"

Jerry looks at him with confusion. "Did what ever fall on my head?"

Kate presses her lips together and nods. While chuckling, she glances at Jack. "Does that answer your question?" Jack nodded in response.

"Jerry, that sounds great, but we're not a dance crew." Eddie pointed out.

"I have the skills and I'll teach you the moves. And if we work hard, we can win this together. Now what do you say?" Jerry asked, looking at his friends with a hopeful expression.

Everyone smiles at him and agrees. "Okay, Jerry, you got yourself a crew." Jack said and he and Jerry bro hugged.

They all stand up and puts their fist to their hand. "Wasabi." They spoke at the same time.

"Whoo!" Jerry shouted excitedly.

****

After school Kate, Jack, and Jerry decided on hanging out at Falafel Phills. The three teens sat in a booth and Kate sat beside Jack who sat across from Jerry.

"Is this just me or these falafel balls greasier than usual?" Jack picked one out of his basket and squeezed it, causing grease to pour out of it.

Kate shakes her head and chuckles. "No, that looks about right." Jerry replies. Since he was leaning back against the booth, he sits up straighter when he notices someone. "Check it out." He points toward the door and Jack and Kate turn around to see what Jerry is looking at to see Dan Brennan talking to a blonde-haired girl by the door. "That's Dan Brennan. He's the best dancer at our school. They call him Smooth." Just as he did that Smooth twirled and leaned against the door smoothly.

Jack and Kate exchange a glance and then glance back at Jerry. "Because he's got great dance moves?" Jack asked.

"And his skin's crazy soft." Jerry responds. "Yo, we're talking velvet."

Kate and Jack turn back to face Jerry so they aren't turned facing the direction of the door anymore. Kate glances to her left when she saw Smooth walk over to them. "Hey, Jerry." Smooth greets, smiling at Jerry. He looks at Kate with a smile. "Hi, Kate." Kate nods and smiles back at him. Smooth looks at Jack with confusion. Jack waves at him with a smile on his face. "Jack."

Smooth fakes a smile and nods. "Eh." He looks at the three teens. "I heard you karate clowns signed up for the dance contest. You know my crew, The Step Brotherz win every year."

Jerry nods. "Yeah, I know. " He shrugs. "Just 'cause you win every year doesn't mean other people shouldn't try."

Smooth scoffs. "Yeah, it kind of does." He looks at Jerry with an intimidating stare. "See, I suggest you leave the dancing to us and stay in your little karate club." He glances at Kate with a smile. "Bye, Kate."

Kate smiles slightly, less happier after he said that about her and her friends. She awkwardly waves at him as he walks away. Jack turns around to face Smooth. "You know, we're not just a karate club." Smooth stops walking to face Jack. "We also offer free counseling to people with bad nicknames. You should come by and see us, 'Smooth'." Smooth didn't respond to him and just glared at him.

Jack turns back around to face his friends with a grin. He does a handshake with Jerry, who smiles at him, and then he high fives Kate, sharing a smile with her. "You guys are just gonna embarrass yourselves." Smooth said, walking back over to their table. "You might have some moves, but can you move..." He backs up a few spaces. "Like Smooth?" He twirled around smoothly and then did a split. He did a kick up (which is just leaning back on your hands and then you lift up). He smirked when he got on his feet and flicked his nose with his thumb. He twirled around and walked away.

Jack glances at her with confusion. "Why is he only nice to you?"

Jerry rolls his eyes. "He has a crush on Kate."

"I wouldn't even call it a crush." Kate rolls her eyes. "The guy still flirts with other girls even though he said he liked me. Is that a crush?" She scoffs, crossing her arms. "I don't think so."

"You don't like him, do you?" Jack asks, raising his eyebrows at her. "'Cause you can do way better than him."

Kate chuckles and smiles at him. "No, I don't like him, but thanks."

"Yo, I can move like Smooth." Jerry stands up. "I can do a split. Check it." He flicked his nose with his thumb like Smooth did and twirled around smoothly. Kate and Jack cringed when Jerry did a split and the sound of clothing ripped is heard.

Jack chuckles. "I think your pants just ripped."

Jerry groans. "That wasn't my pants."

****

The gang are now at the dojo, practicing with Jerry. They have changed into clothes to dance in and had already run through the dance move Jerry taught them. Kate had to admit she enjoyed dancing and she thought she wasn't that bad at it.

"Alright. Now, let's run the whole thing from the top." Jerry said, looking around with confusion when Kim was missing. "Hey, where'd Kim go?"

"She wanted to change into her dance gear." Jack replied.

"Okay, let's do this!" Kim exclaimed, raising her fists in the air as she excitedly walked over to them. Kate looked at her with amusement upon seeing she looked like she was doing a dance video from the 80s. The boys, however, looked at her with an 'are you serious' expression.

"What?" Kim asks after seeing her friend's expressions. "This is how dancers dress."

"Maybe in the '80s in Poland." Milton remarked. Kim rolled her eyes and sat down on one of the benches in the dojo.

"Come on, guys. We've got a lot of work to do." Jerry reminds them. He glances at his friends with a smile. "Are you ready?"

"Yeah." His friends responded.

"I can't hear you!" Jerry said, wanting them to say it with more enthusiasm.

Milton raises his eyebrows. "Really? 'Cause that was pretty loud." He stands by Jerry and yells, "I think you might have some hearing loss!"

Jerry just shakes his head. "Alright, here we go." He grins. "Whoo!" He walks over to the ipod speaker on the bench as his friends line up. He presses play on the music and glances at his friends with disbelief upon seeing how bad they were dancing. The only one who was getting the dance move right was Kate. It made him feel a little better to know at least one of his friends had some dance genes in them. "Ah, esta gente que esta haciendo(these people what are they doing)?" He outstretches his arms with frustration and walks over to turn off the music. "Woah, woah, woah. Cut! Stop!"

His friends stop dancing as he turns to face them with an upset expression. "Okay, I taught you this." He waves his arms in an arm wave motion and leans forward. "You guys are doing this!" He did the sprinkler move and waves his arms all around like what they were doing. "The only one doing the dance move right was Kate!" He said, pointing at Kate, looking at her with a thankful smile. "Thank you, Kate, for actually being good at dancing!"

"Thanks," Kate smiles brightly, happy to know Jerry thought she was good. She tilts her head to the side, furrowing her eyebrows when she realized what he said to her sounded kind of like an insult. "I think..."

"Come on, guys. Don't you have any dancing experience at all?" Jerry questioned.

"Well, uh," Jack walks forward and smirks. "I have my own victory dance I do every time I win a match."

Kate groans. "Please don't do the stupid dance."

Jack looks at her with a small glare. "It's not stupid!" He points at her. "You're just jealous you didn't think of this awesome dance."

Kate presses her lips together and shakes her head. "No, not really."

Jack rolls his eyes and glances at Jerry with a grin. "Ready?" He then showed off his dance which looked like he was acting like a chicken and turned around to do the same thing.

Jerry puts a hand out to stop him, looking at him with furrowed eyebrows. "If that's your victory dance, I'm gonna start rooting against you." Jack stood and rolled his eyes.

"It's been a while since I've danced on stage, but I think I'm just as good now as I was then." Kim smiled nervously since she remembered she didn't do much on stage when she was little.

"Milton, tell me there's a dancer hiding in there somewhere." Jerry pleaded.

"Oh, believe you me, I have a busted many a move." Milton smiled. He cringed when he remembered the time he did a Scottish dance and his shoe flew into an old man's mouth and got stuck in his denchers.

"Eddie, please give me some good news here." Jerry begged.

"Well, I did go to Mrs. King's Dance Academy." Eddie nodded. He smiled when he remembered going to the dance academy only to see Mrs. King.

Jerry turns to face Kate with a hopeful expression. "You did that dancing move perfect. You have to have some dancing genes in you."

"That is true." Kate nods, smiling shyly. "I took dance lessons when I was younger and won some dance contests. But I stopped dancing professionally after I sprained my ankle."

"Yeah," Jack chimes in. "She was the best dancer at our school." He looked at her with a smile. She smiled back at him and she felt butterflies swarm in her stomach for some reason because of the fact that he thought she was that good. She didn't know he thought that way about her.

Jerry sighs with relief and puts his hands on her shoulders, looking at her with a smile. "You are literally a life saver." Kate smiles back at him. Jerry takes his hands off his shoulders, glancing at the others. "And you guys, this is important to me. You gotta start trying."

Jack looks offended by that comment. "Woah, we're trying." The others agreed with him.

"Maybe we should just take a break." Eddie suggested. Milton, Kim, and Jack agreed with him and the three of them began to leave.

Jerry rolls his eyes. "Fine. But before you go, think about this. When you dance, you...You gotta totally feel it." He smiles. "When I dance, I'm not thinking about anything. My head is absolutely empty."

"Right," Kim slowly nods and smiles with amusement. "Like right before an Algebra test."

Jerry rolls his eyes and crosses his arms, looking at her with a glare. Kim raises her hands in defense and quickly leaves along with Eddie, Milton, and Jack. "Hey, you guys better be ready to work when you get back." Jerry called out to them.

Jerry glances at Kate with furrowed eyebrows. "Why didn't you go with them?" He expected her to join the others and not stay back wi

Kate sends him a small smile. "I wanted to stay to practice and to make sure you're alright." She looks at him with concern. "Are you okay?"

Jerry sighs. "Yeah, I guess. I know they're trying, but I just wished they were somewhat good at it. Is dancing that hard?"

Kate shrugs. "It can be for some people." She smiles when she thought of an idea to cheer him up. "Hey, how about you show me that new move you were worked on." She had remembered him talking about how he came up with a cool dance move by himself.

Jerry's face lights up and he raises his eyebrows. "Yeah?"

Kate nods, her smile widening. "Yeah."

"Okay." Jerry grinned and went over to turn on the music. He moved onto the mats and showed her his dance move.

(start at 0:07 & then stop at 0:19)

Kate watched Jerry dance with an impressed expression. She had to admit he was a really good dancer. She thought that he was better than Smooth was. Neither of the two teens caught Smooth walking into the dojo during Jerry's dance.

"What's up, Jerry?" Smooth asked with a small smile on his face.

Jerry stops dancing, looking at him with surprise. Kate glances over at Smooth with wide eyes, not expecting for him to show up at the dojo. Smooth glances at Kate with a smile. "Hi, Kate."

Kate just nods at him and walks over to turn off the music then she goes to stand by Jerry. "Smooth." Jerry puts his hands on his hips. "What are you doing here?"

"That was a pretty crazy move I saw you do." Smooth complimented, walking over to the two teens.

Jerry smiles and waves a dismissive hand to show it wasn't a big deal. "Oh, I've been working on it for a long time." He smirks. "I call it 'The Jerry'."

"How'd you come up with that?" Smooth asked and Kate assumed he meant it to be in a mocking way, but she knew Jerry didn't understand that since he explained how.

"Well, I'm Jerry and I added the 'the'." Jerry answered. Smooth nodded and shrugged.

****

Kate found herself sitting at a booth with Jerry and Smooth at Falafel Phills. She sat next to Jerry, who sat across from Smooth. "Look, you got talent," Smooth looks at Kate and Jerry. "You both do."

Kate narrows her eyes at him. "How do you know that?"

"I was walking by the dojo earlier and saw you dancing." Smooth explains. He smiles at her. "You're really good."

Kate had to admit it felt good to hear one of the best dancers in school tell her that. She smiles at him. "Thanks."

"But you guys are wasting your talent trying to make dancers out of a bunch of karate rats." Smooth continued, looking at Kate and Jerry.

Kate and Jerry look at him with offense. "Hey, those are our friends!" Jerry exclaimed and Kate nodded in agreement.

Jerry looks at him as if he's interested in what Smooth has to say next. "But go on." Kate rolled her eyes at him, hitting his shoulder. Jerry winced slightly at the hit he got and looked at her with a confused look since he didn't see the problem with what he said.

"Let me ask you guys something." Kate and Jerry bring their attention back to Smooth when he talks again. "Are you guys the best karate students in that dojo?"

"I'm not." Jerry responds, pointing at Kate. "Kate and Jack are."

Kate scoffs, but she smiles at him. "I'm flattered you think I'm one of the best, but Jack is way better at karate than I am."

Smooth leans his elbow on the table, pointing at the two of them. "Well, I'm gonna give you guys the chance to be the best at something." He outstretches his arms and smiles at them. "Kate, Jerry, I want you guys in my crew."

Kate and Jerry stare at him with wide eyes. Smooth stands up, looking at them curiously. "You two in?"

Kate and Jerry exchange a glance and have an argument in a whisper tone, Jerry was arguing that they should do this since they were the only ones who had the talent to do it, but Kate argues against him because she thought they shouldn't leave their friends. "Yeah." Jerry speaks in a normal voice, standing up and doing a handshake with Smooth. He smiles. "I guess so."

"Jerry." Kate hisses at him, looking at him with a glare. "What are you doing?"

Jerry glances at her with an apologetic expression. "Look, I'm sorry, but I wanna be the best at something." Kate's face softens when he said that. "And since you say Jack is the best at karate," Jerry continues, looking at her with a small smile. "If you also join then you can be the best at dancing too."

Kate bites her lower lip, bringing her gaze to the table. She couldn't believe she was actually thinking about joining Smooth's crew and leaving her friends. She did like what Jerry said about being the best at something. It was obvious Jack was much better with karate than she is and she knew she was a close second, but being the best at something would be nice. If she joined Smooth's crew that was where there could be more than one people being the best at something.

After having a mental debate with herself, Kate looks at Smooth and nods with a nervous smile on her face. "Okay, I'm in."

"Yes!" Jerry cheered and Kate glanced at him with a smile.

Smooth smiles at them and shakes Jerry's hand. "Wow." Jerry's eyes widen and he looks at Smooth's hand. "Even your hands are smooth." He looks at Smooth. "Dude, what's your secret?"

"I make my own cocoa butter." Smooth admitted and Jerry let go of his hand.

Kate raises her eyebrows and nods. She smiles slightly. "Cool but weird."

"Kate, Jerry, what are you guys doing here?" Jack asks, walking into the restaurant with Eddie, Kim, and Milton. "We were waiting for you back at the dojo."

Kate and Jerry exchange a nervous glance with each other, neither one knowing how to break the news to their friends. "A little change of plans..." Smooth speaks before the two of them can. "Kate and Jerry are a part of my crew now." He smiles. "They want to dance with the best."

Jack looks at Kate and Jerry with disbelief. "What? Guys, is that true?"

"Yeah, it is true." Jerry responds. Jack, Kim, Eddie, and Milton look at Kate and Jerry with hurt. "Hey, Smooth's a great dancer. And he and Kate are my only real shot to be a part of a winning crew."

"So, you would rather win than be with your friends?" Kim glared at him.

"Look, it's not about winning, okay? And besides, I would be with a friend." Jerry points at Kate, who had been quiet this whole time. He points at Smooth. "This guy also makes his own cocoa butter." Smooth nodded and smirked, gesturing for the others to move out of the way to let him through.

Kate stands up when she realizes she should leave with Jerry and Smooth. She looks at her friends with an apologetic look, her heart aching at seeing the look of betrayal on their faces. She avoided looking at Jack because she knew she would get out of joining Smooth's crew just because of seeing the hurt look on his face. But she was doing this for herself. She wanted to do be in Smooth's crew...Right?

****

Kate and Jerry were at Smooth's dance studio and they were doing the dance move Jerry came up with. They high fived each other when they finished the move. "Man, you guys have it all." Jerry noticed, looking around the studio and Kate glanced around the studio with a smile. The studio was the perfect place to dance.

"Yeah." Smooth smiled.

"Sweet dance studio, air conditioning, your own bottled water?" Jerry lists out what Smooth's dance crew had. He picks up the tube of cocoa butter on the table. "Yo, and this cocoa butter could really knock the ash off my elbows."

"Woah!" Smooth grabs the cocoa butter from him. "Nobody touches my cocoa butter."

"So, these are our new members." A voice asked and Kate and Jerry glance over in the direction they heard the unfamiliar voice. A brunette-haired boy walks in with three other teens. He laughs. "Well, he don't look like much." He said to Jerry. He glances at Kate up and down with a smirk. "But she's for sure a beauty."

Kate glares at him and holds onto Jerry's arm when he takes a step toward the boy with an intimidating stare. "Back off, Benny." Smooth tells the brunette-haired boy. Benny crosses his arms and stands beside him. "Jerry's been showing me this crazy move for the last two hours. That's gonna win us the contest. Let's show 'em."

The three teens line up as Benny presses play on the speaker. They did the dance that Jerry made and Smooth's team watches with a smile and nodded at each other, acting like they were liking the move. The three teens high grin at each other and high fived each other when they were finished with the move. Benny turned off the music after they were done.

"I've gotta give it to you, man. That was...That was a pretty sweet move." Benny compliments. He smiles at Kate. "And I was surprised you could do that, you were really good."

Kate looks at him with a surprise since her first impression of him was that he's a jerk, but she was surprised that he could be nice too. Or maybe he was faking she wasn't for sure. But the compliment sounded genuine. she smiles and nods. "Thanks."

"Yeah, I'm gonna use it to win the contest." Smooth explained, smirking at Jerry.

Kate and Jerry share a wide-eyed glance. "What?" Jerry asks as he and Kate looked back at Smooth. He glares at Smooth. "You're not gonna use my move."

Smooth scoffs. "It's not your move. It's called 'the Smooth'." He grins. "See...See what I did was, I took 'the Jerry', took out 'Jerry', and replaced it with 'Smooth'."

Kate glares at him, her hands by her sides forming into fists as she takes a step toward him. "Okay, let me at him."

Even though he appreciated Kate wanting to fight Smooth for him, Jerry knew it wasn't the best idea despite the fact that he himself wanted to punch Smooth for what he did. Jerry puts his arm in front of her to stop her, causing her to back up to stand beside him again. "He's not worth it, Kate."

"I guess I don't need you anymore, Jerry." Smooth smirked. He twirled around and moon walked over to the door.

Benny smirks at Jerry. "You just got smoothed." Benny and the rest of Smooth's dance crew follows him to the door.

Smooth stops at the door and turns to face Kate with a smile. "But Kate, you are more than welcomed to stay in my crew. We're low on girl dancers. And plus we would be able to hang out more and even go on a date."

Kate scoffs and crosses her arms. She couldn't believe Smooth asked her out and thought she would say yes after he stole her friend's dance move. "You gotta accept the fact that I will never go on a date with you. If you think that after you stole Jerry's move that I would stay in your crew and go on a date with you then you are much more stupid than I thought."

Smooth rolls his eyes. "Okay, whatever. Your loss." He grins at Jerry. "Whoo!" He then left with his team.

Jerry frowns, dropping his arm off her shoulders, and his shoulders drop in defeat. "Oh, man. He stole my 'whoo' too."

Kate sympathetically smiles at him and wraps his arm around his shoulders for comfort. "I'm sorry, Jer. I knew how much you liked your dance move." She nods and chuckles. "And your 'whoo'." She said, saying the 'whoo' the same way Jerry always said.

Jerry smiles slightly. "Yeah. And Kate, thanks for staying by my side during this. I really appreciate."

Kate smiles at him. "No problem. I'll always be there for you."

Jerry smiles back at her. "Same here."

Jerry brings his gaze to the floor. He's quiet for a few moments before he looks at her with a hopeful expression as he says, "Hey, you think our friends would give us another chance at being a dance crew?"

Kate sighs heavily and leans her head on his shoulder. "I hope so." He smiled a bit and leaned his head on top of hers.

****

Kate and Jerry decided on going to Falafels Phills to drown their feelings in food. "Jer," Kate looks at Jerry with annoyance when he kept sucking on the straw, trying to get more out of his drink that was clearly empty. "You have got to stop doing that."

"I'm going to have to ask you to stop that." A voice said. Kate and Jerry glance at each other and Jerry finally stops trying to drink more and they glance over their shoulder at the booth behind them to see Joan, one of the security guards of the mall. "I'm on a date!" Joan said. She got up and sat down next to her date.

Kate raises her eyebrows upon seeing her date was an inflatable blow up guy dressed in clothes. "I hope you know that isn't a real guy."

Joan scoffs, moving to sit beside the inflatable blow up guy. "I am so sorry for that awful thing she said about you and for that terrible interruption."

Kate rolls her eyes and she turns back to face forward, leaning against the seat. She sighs when she notices Jack, Kim, Milton, and Eddie walk in. "Well," Eddie frowns at Kate and Jerry. "If it isn't Eggs Benedict and Miss Betrayal."

Kate frowns at hearing the nickname Eddie called her, but she felt confused with the nickname Eddie used for Jerry. Kate and Jerry exchange a confused glance. "You mean Benedict Arnold?" Milton asked Eddie, looking at him with confusion.

A confused look forms on Eddie's face and he shakes his head. "No, I don't think I do."

Jack crosses his arms and looks at Kate and Jack with annoyance. "Shouldn't you guys be practicing with your new Smooth dance friends?"

Jerry scoffs, crossing his arms. "They're not our friends. Smooth just used me to steal my move."

"And I'm pretty sure he only wanted me to join to try to get me to go out with him." Kate rolled her eyes.

Kim looks at the two with wide eyes. "They stole the Jerry and he wanted to ask you out?"

"Yeah." Jerry nods. "And it's not called the Jerry anymore. Now it's called the Smooth. He just named it after himself." He scoffs. "Zero imagination."

Kate facepalms and shakes her head. Jerry was great and all, but sometimes he's not the smartest. "Jerry, you got us so excited about this dance thing." Jack speaks up. "You said we were gonna do it together," He points at Kate and Jerry. "And you both bailed on us." He frowns at Kate. "I understand why Jerry bailed on us but why did you bail on us?"

"I wanted to be the best at something." Kate admits. She stands up, facing Jack. "You're the best at karate," She points at him when he went to speak and he stays quiet. "And don't say that I'm the best because we all know that's not true." She sighs and crosses her arms. "Sometimes I just feel like I'm not good enough and that I have to live up to how good you are."

She smiles a bit. "I'm actually pretty good at dancing and being in a good dance crew is somewhere I can be the best at something." Jack looked at her with a guilty expression. He didn't know Kate felt this way and he felt bad for not realizing that's how she felt. He never meant for her to feel like she wasn't the best or was just second best and he never wanted her to feel that way.

"What I was gonna say actually goes with what Kate said." Jerry admits. "I'm never gonna be great at karate or...Or a great school person."

"Student." Milton corrected him.

"Whatever." Jerry shrugs. "Dancing is the one thing I'm really good at. And I just wanted everyone to see that." He exchanges a smile with Kate and they both look back at their friends. "But you guys are our friends and we shouldn't have walked out on you. It's actually my fault for dragging Kate along. She probably wouldn't have joined if I didn't persuade her to join."

"Yeah," Kate agrees, looking at the rest of her friends with a smile. "I didn't want to leave you guys, but like I said, I wanted to be the best at something, and I feel like I'm the second best at the dojo. But I know now that being the best doesn't matter." She apologetically smiles at them. "We're both sorry." Jerry nodded in agreement, looking at them with an apologetic expression and the two teens started walking out of the restaurant.

"Guys, wait!" Jack calls out, causing Kate and Jerry to stop and turn to face him and the others. Jack shares a look with Eddie, Kim, and Milton before they walk over to him. "If you guys still wanna be in the contest, we'll be your crew."

Kate and Jerry smile at each other and look at their friends excitedly. "Really?" They both questioned.

"Yes, we're back in the game!" Jerry cheered, doing a bro hug with Jack.

Kate high fives Jack, sharing a smile with him. "Listen, Rina." Jack said to her. "I never meant to make you feel like you weren't good enough or that you had to live up to my expectations." He puts a hand on her shoulder, smiling at her. "You are good enough and you don't have to be exactly as good as me, but just letting you know, you are definitely way more talented at karate than I am."

Kate smiles from ear to ear and giggles, shaking her head. She didn't agree with Jack about the being better than him at karate, but she didn't say anything. "Thank you, Jackie. You saying that means a lot to me." Jack smiled brightly at her and takes his hand off her shoulder, wrapping his arm around her shoulders to pull her in for a side hug. Kate wrapped her arm around his waist to hug him back and leaned her head on his shoulder.

"You guys are awesome!" Jerry grinned at his friends while Jack and Kate let go of each other and Jack sat down a chair behind the booth near the entrance, leaning his arms on the back of the booth.

"Not at dancing." Milton responds with a cringed expression on his face. "We still stink."

"Yeah, would you excuse me, please?" Joan walks by, holding her inflatable blow up guy. "I'm on a date!"

Jack had a 'are you serious' expression after he got hit by the inflatable blow up guy when Joan walked by him. Kate giggled when she watched that happen, looking at him with amusement. Jack glanced at her and playfully rolled his eyes, but there was a small smile on his lips.

****

It was now the day of the dance contest. The gang wore gis that was covered in colorful paint splatter and the main color was black and they wore black clothes underneath. They also had colorful karate belts tied around their waist and heads.

The gang stood at their dojo between the open doors, watching Smooth's dance crew with disapproving expressions on their face when Smooth used Jerry's move.

Everyone cheers for Smooth's dance crew at the end. "Wow, how about that?" The announcer asks, walking on stage. She smiles at the crowd. "Come on, people, give it up for the Step Brotherz." Everyone cheers loudly for Smooth and his dance crew. "Did you see that last move? That was crazy!" She glances at Smooth. "How do you come up with something like that?"

"By stealing it!" Jerry yelled.

"Yeah!" His friends agreed.

Smooth and his dance crew walk off the stage as the announcer says, "Now, let's give it up for the last act of the competition...The Wasabi Warriors."

Everyone cheers for the six teens walking on stage while the announcer leaves the stage. Smooth steps on stage, facing Jerry. "Good luck with your little loser friends, Jerry. I just crushed it. I better go clean out my pockets to make room for my prize money."

Jerry clicks his tongue and shakes his head. "I wouldn't do that just yet, Smooth." He smirks and crosses his arms. "We've got a routine that is pretty swag."

"I told you before, beside Kate, those guys aren't dancers." Smooth reminds him. He shrugs. "All they know about is karate."

Grinning, Jerry nods. "Exactly."

Jack jogs over to Jerry with a smile on his face. "Dude, we're on!" He looked at Smooth intimidatingly when he saw Smooth was standing there. Smooth rolled his eyes and walked off stage. Jerry and Jack got in place with the others.

Since Kate's and Jerry's friends only knew about karate, they added karate into the dance, and it seemed like everyone liked it. Kate and Jerry had came up with a dance move together for this dance that they did towards the end which was now.

Upbeat music played after some upbeat karate music played. Jack faces Kate and Jerry with a wide smile. "It's time for your new move, guys. It's all you two."

Kate and Jerry smile at Jack and the three of them do a triple high five. "Let's go." Jerry said and Jack nods. "Yeah." He then went back to his place.

Kate and Jerry grin at each other and they fist bump. Kate got in her place, behind Jack. The gang had formed two lines, Kim, Kate, and Eddie in the back, and Jerry, Jack, and Milton in front. They each put their fist to their hand at the same time and twirled around at the same time, moving places counter clockwise. Now Kim and Eddie stood on the left side of the stage and Milton and Jack stood on the right side of the stage. Kate and Jerry stood in the middle of the stage.

Kate and Jerry did a dance move they had to go from on one hand and go to another hand and swung their legs around while the others did some simple karate moves. Kate and Jerry continues their dance they made up and then Kate moves to stand behind Jerry. They both do a flip in the air at the same time, but Jerry did a back flip while Kate did a front flip. Kate landed between Jerry and where Milton stood and their friends ended the dance in a karate pose, yelling 'wasabi'.

Everyone cheered loudly for the six teens. Kate and Jerry turn to face each other with grins on their faces and hugs each other. Meanwhile, the others high five each other and Kate and Jerry pull away from the hug, high fiving their friends. They all smiled each other, happy to have done well with the dance and that everyone seemed to like it.

Smooth's crew even liked it, but Smooth was the only one who didn't like it and he looked at his crew angrily to get them to stop clapping. "Wow, that was awesome." The announcer said as she walks on stage, holding the trophy. "I have the judges' results. The winner of the trophy and the one thousand dollar prize is...The Step Brotherz!"

The crowd cheers for Smooth and his crew as they walk on stage. Smooth takes ahold of the trophy with a smirk on his face. Jerry glances at his friends with a smile. "I thought you guys were awesome."

"Yeah," Kate smiles at her friends. "I don't think anyone could tell you guys are awful dancers."

Jack chuckles. "Thanks."

Jerry wraps his arms around Kate's and Milton's shoulders since he stood by between them. "I was proud to have you as my crew." His friends smiled at him, and they all wrapped their arms around each other.

"This year," The announcer walks back on stage since she had walked off to grab something and she's seen with another trophy. "The judges are also awarding a trophy for the best individual dancer." She smiles. "And the winner is.." Smooth walks over to her with a smile on his face, ready to take the trophy from her. He acts like he was going to run a hand through his hair instead when the announcer hands the trophy to Jerry. "Jerry Martinez!"

Jerry's eyes widen and he looks at her with disbelief, taking the trophy from her. Kate cheers loudly for him along with her friends. She wasn't upset she didn't get the trophy. She was more than proud of Jerry winning best dancer because he deserved it.

"What?" Smooth asks in disbelief. "Jerry? He's not that great. I can do what he did. Watch this." He tried doing the same dance move Kate and Jerry did, but ended up falling off the stage and onto the judges table. Everyone laughed at him and his crew walked off stage.

Jerry walks over to the side of the stage, looking at Smooth with amusement. "Not very smooth, Smooth. Whoo!" Smooth glares at him. "Yeah, that's right." Jerry nods. "I'm taking my 'whoo' back!" Smooth rolled his eyes and walked away, bumping into a chair in the process which caused more laughter to happen.

The announcer offers the microphone to Jerry for him to say something. "Uh, yeah, I'd like to thank my mom, my dad, Rudy, my crew..." He looks at his friends with a smile. "Couldn't have done it without you guys." The announcer tries taking the microphone back, but Jerry wouldn't let go. "Oh, and, uh, one last thing is, five, six, seven, eight, and..."

Dance music is played and he let go of the microphone. The announcer shrugged and walked off stage while the gang danced around on stage. Kate laughed when she noticed Jack and Jerry were doing Jack's victory dance.

A/N decided to focus more a little bit of kate's & jerry's friendship in this chapter :) but i made sure to add a cute moment with kate & jack bc they are adorable !
