Chapter 3: Choices

Meme's POV

I was feeling confident about what lay ahead in this maze. We had Blaza who was making a map of the maze as we went through it, we had me with my 100% real medical degree (AN:It's not real Meme) ready to be our medic, and then there was Socks, who never put down his sword and always insisted on going first. I guess he was our fighter, but I agree with Blaza in saying he has been acting weird. We've noticed things before, but this is a whole different level of weird. Right? Thinking back on it now, why haven't we noticed? Why didn't we think it was weird when he woke up screaming from nightmares on the same day each month, or how he always got jumpscared by Laff, why he looked sad whenever I said we were all best friends forever, how one time in a game he jumped in front of Laff killing Woof and said he didn't want a repeat, or when Nadwe found a knife under his pillow. Wow. That's a lot of stuff. How could we have been so oblivious to all this. In retrospect we were really stupid.

My train of thought was cut off as saw something come out of the wall, and then transform into me! What, there are things that can do that? It went over and taped Socks on the shoulder.

"Socks," it said in my voice, "Something just came from over there and it looks like me! You're the one with a sword, kill it!" It pointed to me, I was shocked.

"Wait no Socks," I said hurriedly, "I'm the real Meme, that one is an impostor!" Socks looked at the two of us. What is he going to do, what can he do?

"I know," Blaza said abruptly, "Ask them a question only the real Meme would know the answer to."

"Ok," Socks said, he thought for a second, "Is your medical degree real?" What, that was the question he was going with, that's so obvious.

"Yes! It's 100% real!" the impostor said almost immediately. I need to do something more than that.

"It is 1,000,000% real and I can prove it," I said, pulling my medical degree out. I always carry it around, but I was hoping the copy didn't have one too.

"Can you prove it?" Socks asked the copy.

"No, I left it at home where it would be safe." it replied. Shoot, that was a good answer. Socks scoffed.

"Me of all people should know your medical degree isn't safe at home," he said and raised his sword. The purple blade slashed through whatever was impersonating me and vanished in a black cloud of smoke.

"That actually worked," I said, "Wow, Socks, you did it." He smiled at me.

"Yeah," he replied, "That question was just a warm up, but I knew you would never leave your medical degree in the sleeping area, with all the people who could steal it."

"Alright guys, there are three different paths up ahead," Blaza said, "So let's get moving."

We started walking through the maze, stopping at turns so Blaza could mark them down on our map. This turned out to be useful because whenever we hit a dead end, Blaza had his map to show us how to get back and where the last decision point was. We had been exploring many different failed routes for a few hours, when disaster struck. Socks had tripped on a loose stone and I was tending to the scratches he got, but when we got up, there were two Blazas.

"I'm the real one!" they both said in unison.

"Um," the one on the right said, "That was weird and let's never do that again."

"So," Socks said, "We need a question for them." I turned to the two Blazas.

"How should we decide this," I asked the pair.

"A question," the one on the left said.

"Coin flip," the one on the right said. I barely had a moment to register the answers before Socks lashed out, and cut off the head of the left Blaza. It faded away the same way my copy did.

"WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?" I yelled, "That could have been the real Blaza, and you didn't hesitate."

"Blaza would always leave things up to a coin flip," Socks countered, "Even his life."

"It's true," Blaza put in.

"Not helping," I said, "The point is if you don't take a moment to think about what you are doing, you might make a bad choice."

"It's worked for me the last two times," he said.

"Whatever," I sighed, dropping the argument, "I swear, one day you're going to get us killed." Socks looked at the ground with a look of regret in his eyes. We continued walking, and I realized that I have no idea what to ask Socks if he gets in this situation. Socks seemed to realize that too, because at one of the turns, he pulled me aside.

"I've been thinking, there might be a way to cheat the system," Socks said, "I don't think the shapeshifter has the copied person's short term memory, so when I think the shifter is coming, I'll tell you the answer to the question and only I will know it.

"That makes sense," I replied, "Let's do that."

And do that we did, when Blaza and I were debating over where to go next, Socks came over and whispered in my ear, "My sword is called Black Hole." A few moments later we turned around to see two Socks.

"What is the name of your sword?" I asked, not wasting any time.

"It doesn't have a name," the one on the right said.

"Black Hole," the one on the left said.

"You're the real one," I said, pointing to the one on the left.

"I know," Socks said, "So kill the other one and be done with it."

"Can't you do it," I asked him, Socks shook his head. I pulled the knife out and looked at the thing that was impersonating my friend. I've never killed anyone, I didn't like death at all, I didn't want to start now. Is that really true? A small part of me asked. Something was there. Whatever is happening triggered something. If I just dug a little deeper... It was gone. Whatever feeling I had vanished. That would have to be an investigation for another day. The creature suddenly hissed and leaped at me.

"Fight me already!" it screamed. I held out the knife, and stabbed the fake in the heart. It vanished in the same way the others did.

"Let's move on then," Socks said, looking a little sympathetic towards me. I couldn't shake a horrible feeling that something was wrong. I knew there was some truth hidden... all I had to do was search for it. I'd ask the others about that later, when the time was right. For now, we had to focus on getting out of here.
