8. We Are Here.

June was still in disbelief as she walked past her doctor the next day. But taking a second look, she realised just how much he resembled the man in the photograph: himself in 1854. He didn't look a day over 25, let alone 180. What was he? A vampire? Some freak zombie? June had absolutely no idea.

She sat at her table, fingers tracing over the cracks in the marble. Dean walked over, sitting across from here. "June?" His voice was soft and had a calming effect on her as she looked up into his unbelievably green eyes.

"Cas has found something," he explained. "Wanna come check it out?"

She nodded and he took her hand in his gently, leading her down the halls and into an abandoned patient room.

Cas was staring around the room, listening to the voices.

We are here.

The angel frowned and turned to June. "What do they mean?" he asked her.

She stared at him, her brows furrowed in confusion. "You hear them?"

"Of course I do. I'm a celestial being."

June rolled her eyes. "I don't know what they mean. I never do."

Sam cleared his throat. "Can one of you fill us in, because I'm sure Dean and I have no clue what you two crazies are on about."

"June is not schizophrenic," Castiel put bluntly. "She is tuned in to the voices of deceased patients."

"Why is it only me who can hear them here?" June asked, her fingers tracing the walls.

"Your parents," Castiel explained, without actually explaining anything.

"My parents? Thanks for the clarification, Cas."

"When you were 16, your parents died in a car crash while you survived," Cas continued, and June swallowed, trying to push away the memory. "But you didn't survive. You died, albeit briefly, you still died none the less. Miraculously, you were brought back, and from then on, claimed to be schizophrenic, but you have a gift. You can hear those who have crossed over."

"So... Do you see dead people?" Dean tried to lighten the mood by quoting The Sixth Sense. June looked at him, tears brimming her eyes.

"June, they are here," Cas reminded her. "You are their saviour."

We are here.

June pointed to the wall. "There," she instructed. Sam lifted the hammer and collided it into the wall. The first hit did close to nothing, but with three more tries, the hole in the wall was large enough for something to fall out. Sam gasped, Dean frowned, and June stared, her eyes wide. There, between her feet, was a human skull.

"So, the walls actually talk?" Sam asked, picking up the skull.

June whimpered and rushed out of the room, with Dean hot on her heels. Grabbing her hand, he spun her around. "Look at me."

She looked up, tears rolling down her cheeks. His thumbs brushed over them, wiping them away. "This isn't over yet," he whispered. "You need to be strong, like I know you are. You are going to save them, June. I believe in you, okay?"

June realised she was staring at his lips, watching them form the words she had been waiting to hear her whole life. They weren't oh you poor dear, lost your parents and now you're a freak, or you need medical attention then you'll be normal again. No, this was affection, care, all of the above.

And before she had realised what was happening, his lips were on hers and her eyes were closed, and she felt the feeling again. Serenity.
