63: FEBRUARY 2023: A Decision

Luisa opened her eyes and squinted as the soft morning light filtered through the blinds. Beside her, Seokjin slept peacefully, his handsome features serene in the gentle glow. She remembered it was Saturday and wondered why she had woken up so abruptly.

A moment later, a sharp cramp shot through her body, likely the cause of her sudden awakening. Carefully, trying not to disturb Seokjin, she slid out of bed and made her way to the bathroom.

A few hours later, she found herself at the kitchen table, watching Seokjin as he whipped up breakfast. He always took delight in cooking for her on weekends, cherishing the dream of lazy mornings shared together. He envisioned them savoring a leisurely breakfast, a ritual of warmth and togetherness to start their days.

Her breath caught as he set a generous plate piled high with food in front of her.

"What's all this?" she asked, eyes wide.

He flashed her a playful grin and took a seat. "My son must be hungry."

She hesitated, her voice dropping to a soft tone. "Um, we should talk."

Seokjin immediately set down his fork, concern washing over his face. "Is something wrong? Are you feeling okay?"

Luisa nodded, though the lump in her throat made her pause. "Yes, I'm fine. I guess I should just say it." She took a deep breath. "Jin, I got my period today." She met his gaze, but his expression remained stoic. "That means I'm not pregnant. I... I'm sorry."

He set down his fork and gently took her hand. "Hey, there's nothing to be sorry about. Please don't be sad, baby. Are you disappointed?"

She glanced down at her plate, grappling with her feelings. "I don't know," she admitted.

He let out a soft chuckle. "I mean it. Don't let this get to you. We have plenty of time to start a family. You don't need to worry about it. It just wasn't the right moment yet, that's all." He released her hand and returned to his meal.

Luisa stole a glance at him from the corner of her eye. He was trying to exude calmness, yet she noticed the rigidity in his grip on his utensils and the silence that enveloped them. Typically, he would have been proudly boasting about his cooking skills, encouraging her to provide compliments in return.

"It seemed like you were really excited about becoming a father," she said, pushing her food around her plate in a distracted manner.

He paused again, letting out a heavy sigh. "Of course I was excited, baby, but I'll be just as thrilled when it happens next time for real. I don't want you to worry about me." He flashed a reassuring smile. "Don't you have a wedding to plan? You'll need all your energy for that, especially with how your friends are going wild with the arrangements."

He took her hand in his again. "Really, Lu. Don't dwell on this. I never want to see you upset over something that isn't anyone's fault." His smile transformed into a playful smirk. "And trust me, I'll have a lot of fun trying to make you pregnant, and you will too. I promise."

Luisa swallowed hard, attempting to muster a smile in response. "Yes, but there's something else."

He looked at her with curiosity. "What is it?"

Taking a deep breath, she was about to speak when her phone rang. "Just a second," she said, leaping from her chair to grab it from the sofa.

Minutes later, after a flurry of animated conversation, she returned to the table, her expression a mix of excitement and disbelief.

"It was Meg," she said breathlessly. "Last night, Hoseok proposed to her!"

Seokjin's eyes widened, a grin spreading across his face. "Really? Wow! I never expected him to actually do it." At Luisa's incredulous look, he added, "He mentioned finding the perfect ring weeks ago, but I thought he might have changed his mind."

"Honestly, Jin, why didn't you tell me?" Luisa asked, her brow furrowing.

"It wasn't my place to share," he replied simply. "But it all worked out in the end, didn't it? I'm surprised she waited until this morning to call you."

Luisa chuckled softly, looking down at her plate. "She said they celebrated all night and only surfaced this morning."

"Sounds about right," Seokjin said, nodding as he took another bite of his meal. After a moment, he paused, directing his gaze back to her. "So, what was it you wanted to tell me before the distraction?"

She bit her lip, grappling with how to raise the delicate subject. How could she tell her husband that the recent pregnancy scare might have involved another man's child? With a nervous tap of her finger on the table, she began, "Um, well—"

Just then, Seokjin's phone rang, cutting her off. He pulled it from his pocket, a smile lighting up his face.

"It's Hobi," he announced, and with that, he answered the call and stepped into the living room.

Luisa could hear his laughter echoing through the space as he congratulated one of his closest friends. He was so filled with joy, especially in light of their uncertain pregnancy situation. Did she have the right to cloud his happiness with her own troubling concerns? Wasn't it easier to let things be? Her friends had encouraged her to keep this to herself and simply enjoy the prospect of becoming parents.

Now that the possibility of a baby seemed to have faded, was there any point in even mentioning it? Bringing it up could only hurt Seokjin or even provoke anger. The last thing she wanted was for him to harbor resentment towards her.

She resolved to keep it to herself. No good could come from such a revelation. Instead, she needed to focus on her marriage. After all, she certainly didn't want to hear about any of the women Seokjin may have been with during their time apart. Why would he want to hear about Charlie?

With a determined nod, she returned to her breakfast, the clarity of her decision fueling her appetite. She firmly pushed any lingering thoughts of Charlie aside; there was no place for negativity in their lives at this moment.
