62: JANUARY 2023: A Close Call
"What does it say?" Megan gasped, peering anxiously over Selina's shoulder. They huddled around Luisa, who clutched the pregnancy test strip wrapped tightly in toilet paper, her eyes averted.
"I can't bear to look," Luisa whispered, dread etched on her face.
Selina let out an exasperated sigh. "Lulu, we can't help you if we don't know what we're dealing with. I know this is terrifying, but all we can do today is find out if you're pregnant. The paternity questions will have to wait."
Megan chimed in, her tone reassuring. "Hey, it's not the end of the world. The test might not even be accurate yet. You haven't missed a period."
Luisa bit her lip, uncertainty clouding her eyes. "You're right. It just feels like I'm standing on the brink of a decision that I can never take back."
"Please, let us see," Selina said gently. "You don't have to look; just let us check it. I promise we'll face whatever happens together. We're here for you."
"Absolutely, Lulu. After all these years, we would never leave you to handle this on your own," Megan chimed in, extending her hand. "Now, please, just give it to us."
With a heavy sigh, Luisa reluctantly passed the wad of toilet paper to her friends. They turned away, huddled together, and examined the pregnancy strip.
"Luisa!" Selina gasped, her voice tinged with disbelief. "It's negative!" She quickly spun around to face her friend. "It's really negative." She paused, the weight of the moment settling in. "But before we celebrate too much, remember: it could still be too early for a completely accurate result. The box did say it's more reliable after you've missed your period, and you said you haven't."
Luisa shook her head minutely, but a faint smile began to form on her lips. "But that's good news, right?"
Megan placed the pregnancy strip on the counter, her expression cautious. "For now, I suppose. If you're still feeling unwell later and end up missing your period, you'll need to retake the test."
"I know," Luisa replied, her voice hesitant. "That was a close call. But for now, I'm just relieved that it's possible I'm not pregnant. That means I won't have to have that conversation with Jin about Charlie and me." She tossed the tissue into the trash can and followed her friends back to the living room, their earlier tension slowly lifting.
Megan and Selina sank back onto the sofa as Luisa settled into the armchair across from them.
"Forgive me for asking," Megan started cautiously, "but why did you let Charlie go in without protection?" She gasped as Selina immediately slapped her arm.
Luisa frowned, a mix of frustration and sadness in her expression. "It's not like I wanted to get pregnant. That night was one of those awful moments when I found myself drowning in grief over... well, over Seokjin's betrayal. Even after four years, the sadness would sometimes flood over me, and all I could do was cry myself to sleep."
"And Charlie took advantage of that, didn't he?" Selina interjected, her voice tinged with disapproval. She reached for the pitcher and poured herself another mimosa, her eyes narrowing. "He's always been such a weasel."
Megan raised her glass, signaling for Selina to pour her another drink as well. "I get it, though. When the person you've loved and idolized for so long betrays you in the most painful way, you seek someone else to help you feel special again. When a guy cheats, it robs you of your self-worth, and then you start looking for validation from someone else. Unfortunately, we often make really poor choices in those moments. Trust me, I know."
Luisa tucked her legs beneath her and hugged her knees tightly. "I guess that's how I felt. For all those years, I wondered why I wasn't enough, why he couldn't stay faithful to me. I hated feeling undesirable, and then Charlie showed up, repeatedly telling me how sorry he was for what happened between us and how much he wanted another chance to make things right."
Selina nodded empathetically. "I hear you. Don't be too hard on yourself. After holding onto that pain for so long, it's only natural to want to feel better, to find solace wherever you can."
"Or from whoever you can," Megan chimed in.
Selina shot her a warning glare before refocusing on Luisa. "But on a more positive note, it's likely that you're not pregnant. So you won't have to worry about explaining any of this to Seokjin, right? Men don't handle news like that well. They want to believe they're the only ones who ever mattered to you. Sometimes it's easier to let them hold on to that illusion."
Megan chuckled lightly. "Yoongi better watch out around you!"
"My Yoongi is the perfect husband," Selina replied, her voice light and playful, a sparkle in her eyes. "I would never lie to him."
A sudden noise at the door sent a wave of tension through the room, but everyone relaxed when Seokjin stepped into the apartment.
"You finished early," Luisa said, rising to greet him with a warm kiss. "We were just hanging out."
Seokjin smiled as he surveyed the scene. "Hello, ladies." His gaze fell on the coffee table, where the mimosa pitcher sat surrounded by a scattering of bridal magazines. "I see you've been busy planning and scheming."
Selina laughed, her eyes twinkling. "Planning, Seokjin. We've been planning. Your beautiful bride deserves a wedding to remember, don't you agree?" She raised an eyebrow playfully.
Seokjin wrapped his arms around Luisa's waist and grinned. "Absolutely! Anything for my love." He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "You can plan whatever you like. Just let me know when and where, and I'll be there."
Megan stood up, a determined smile on her face. "That sounds like a plan." She glanced at Selina, who was already reaching for her purse. "Let's go start scouting some bridal dress shops. We'll call you as soon as we find some good options."
With hugs and kisses exchanged, the two women headed out, leaving Seokjin standing a few feet away, watching them with a mix of amusement and affection.
As soon as the door closed behind them, a heavy silence enveloped the room.
Seokjin raised an eyebrow, a playful grin spreading across his face. "I'm home early. What do you say we head back to bed?"
Luisa smiled back, her heart light. "Sure, but let me just clean up a bit. I'll be there in a minute."
"One minute," he teased, dashing away like an eager child racing toward a present.
A wave of affection washed over her. She loved him so deeply and was relieved to have sidestepped a potentially awkward conversation. Seokjin had made it clear in the past that he didn't want to hear about her history with Charlie—or any other man, for that matter. She gathered the pitcher and glasses, rinsing them out in the kitchen, planning to deal with the magazines later. Seokjin was likely already undressed and waiting in bed.
When she entered the bedroom, however, she found the bed empty. Glancing around, she spotted him in the bathroom and took a few steps toward him.
"Sweetie, I thought you'd already be in bed," she called out with a smile, only for it to fade instantly when she saw the pregnancy test he was holding.
"Lu?" he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
She licked her lips, her mind racing. "Uh, you see, I thought—well, I was feeling—" Before she could finish, he swept her into his arms.
"Oh, my sweetheart," he breathed deeply into her hair. "Why didn't you tell me?"
She gently pulled away, confused. "Tell you what? I only checked because I was feeling a bit sick today."
He wrapped his arms around her again, holding her tightly. "Baby, you can't just downplay a moment like this!" He kissed her tenderly and then held her at arm's length, his eyes shining with excitement. "I'm going to be a father?"
She shook her head in disbelief. "Wh-what? I don't know."
He let out a joyful laugh. "Your acting skills are impressive, baby, but this is no joke! I know we haven't talked about it yet, but—wow! A baby! Our baby! I couldn't be happier!"
"Jin," she said, raising her voice to cut through his excitement. "The test was negative."
He blinked, his smile unwavering. "Lu, you can stop pretending. I have the test right here." He held up the pregnancy stick, and her heart sank as she saw the unmistakable second pink line.
Luisa snatched his hand, bringing the test closer for a better look. She gasped, her breath catching in her throat as the reality of it all dawned on her, causing her to start coughing.
Seokjin quickly set the stick down on the bathroom counter and grasped her shoulders gently. "Baby, just breathe. You really didn't know? When did you take this?"
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "It was only... a few minutes ago. I only saw one line, so I threw it away."
He smiled warmly. "You probably just checked it too soon." Leaning in, he kissed her again, the kiss deepening as his longing for her intensified. "I'm so happy, baby. You'll have the wedding of your dreams—whatever you want. You deserve the world." He took her hand and led her to the bed, his touch gentle yet confident. "I want to make you feel as happy as I do right now."
His hand rested on her flat stomach, a tender gesture filled with promise. "If my son doesn't mind, I plan to shower his mother with all the love she deserves."
As he gently guided her back onto the bed, kissing her and exploring her curves, Luisa's mind raced with anxiety, drowning out the moment's intimacy. The conversation she dreaded loomed overhead: How would Seokjin react if she confessed that she wasn't sure who the father was? What on earth was she going to do?
