25: JANUARY 2018 - Broken Up Again

"You haven't sent me the rough cut from Wednesday's shoot." A pause. "Hey, Kim! Hello? Are you awake?"

Seokjin blinked a few times and turned in the direction of the voice. "Uh, yeah, yeah. The rough cut? I'm uploading it right now." The man at the door nodded and left. Seokjin's fingers moved quickly over the keyboard. He hit the send button and fell back on his chair.

Mondays! He didn't like them one bit. The first day of the new year of 2018 had fallen on a Monday last week. By the time he came back to work on Tuesday the second, he had been single for a week. Emily had broken up with him the day after Christmas when he couldn't agree to set a date for their postponed wedding. She had wanted a winter wedding a week before Christmas. He had asked her to wait, but a week later, he still didn't have an answer for her, and she gave up.

He wouldn't deny that he was upset, but he was more upset that he wasn't heartbroken the way he thought he'd feel. He liked Emily, but he wasn't sure that he'd ever loved her enough to spend the rest of his life with her. He had stayed with her because of her illness, which was a shitty reason anyways. She didn't deserve his pity like that.

She also didn't deserve how little he thought about her because his thoughts were always on another woman: the woman he was sure he loved, the woman he was broken up over. But she probably didn't love him back. He'd spent three years pining over Luisa, wanting her, but to no avail. She was always just out of reach.

He'd also switched companies, seeing as how his relationship with Emily's father was certain to become hostile. In the end, the man hadn't objected to Seokjin's leaving. In fact, he expressed his gratitude for all he had done and gave him a glowing recommendation.

He sighed and sat up straight. He was no longer the favored son. A lot of work had been piled on his desk, and nothing would be solved if he fell even more behind. He put all thoughts about his broken engagement and broken heart aside and settled in to work a long day.

The hours went by in a blur, and before he knew it, he heard others calling out their goodbyes. He glanced at the clock and saw that it was already past seven. He still had two more files to go through and decided to get himself some coffee.

"Working late?" A petite young woman with auburn hair smiled at him as he entered the break room.

"Oh, uh, yeah," Seokjin mumbled and made his way to the coffee pot. He picked it up and swore. It was empty.

"Let me make you a fresh pot," the woman said and moved around getting the supplies together.

"That's okay," he replied.

"No, I've got it," she said. "I want some coffee myself. I have to finish some editing work that's due tomorrow morning. I sure as hell don't want to be here at six in the morning, so I'll just stay late today." She measured the coffee grounds into the filter and set everything in motion. Soon, the aroma of fresh coffee filled the room.

"You really didn't have to do this...but thank you," Seokjin said. He poured a cup for her and then himself.

"You're welcome," she replied with a smile. She looked down as she prepared her coffee. "You don't know my name, do you?"

"Uh—"

She giggled. "Don't worry. I'm not upset. I'm Jennifer Paxon. I work in video editing."

"Hi, Jennifer. I'm—"

"Kim Seokjin. Yes, I know," she interrupted. "You're one of our best art directors. I'm actually working on the video for the Finessa Skin Care line. I believe it's one of your projects."

He nodded. "Yeah. I just sent the rough cut to Stabler this morning. Sorry that you have to work harder to clean it up."

She shook her head. "Oh, no. You all did a fantastic job. All the footage is incredible. It's hard to edit only because all the shots look so good." She swirled her coffee cup. "If you want, you can come to my office and see what I have so far. There's no one else here. You can tell me what you want." Her piercing gaze made it clear what she wanted. "I'll do whatever you want."

He looked at her silently, wondering what to do. He fidgeted with his tie. He felt a tightness in his pants as she sidled up to him. He looked down at her, but before he could move away, she threw her arms around his neck and pulled him down into a kiss.

She took control, running her tongue aggressively in his mouth.

"J-Jennifer," he rasped.

"It's okay," she gasped. "I want you. I want you to touch me." She took one of his hands and pushed it under her skirt. "Let me feel your fingers," she whispered. He rubbed his hand along the already wet crotch of her panties, and she shuddered.

This was crazy. He did not want a quick hookup with a coworker just because he was recently single. Just because he realized that he didn't miss or love his ex-fiancée the way he should've. Just because he hadn't had sex in over four months–and a sad hookup that had been. Just because he knew who he wanted but couldn't have her.

When her hand rubbed the bulge in his pants, he broke away from her.

She was breathing hard. "What...what's wrong?"

He took a deep breath and smiled. "You know there's cameras everywhere here."

She sighed. "Uh, well. We can go to a hotel or–or to my place."

Seokjin half-turned away from her, getting his breath under control. He looked at her again. "Jennifer, I'm beyond flattered that you are so...enthusiastic, but—"

"But," she interrupted, "don't tell me. You have a girlfriend. A man turning down a sure thing is unusual unless he has someone he truly loves."

He pressed his lips together. A vision of Luisa flashed in his mind, and he nodded.

Jennifer sighed again. "Well, thank you for telling me before anything happened. You really are a gentleman. Your girlfriend is lucky."

He smiled ruefully and nodded again. If only Luisa knew how lucky she was. He just couldn't get her off his mind.

"About the editing, why don't you just send it to me once you're done? I do have a lot of work to get through before I go home, and I really can't spare a minute right now. Sorry."

The young woman smiled sadly. "Oh, okay. That's fine. Maybe we can get together on the next project." She paused at the door. "Maybe things will change one day."

"Yeah, maybe," he replied. He slipped away to his office, stopping briefly by the men's room to wash her scent off his face and hands. For the next two hours, he focused on nothing else except his work.

His phone buzzed just as he hit Save on his last file. It was Hoseok.

"Yeah?"

"Hey, Jin. Wanna go out for a few drinks?"

Seokjin glanced at his watch. "Uh...I don't know—"

"Aw, come on! It's only nine. Meet us at Tavernesque in 30."

"Wait. Us? Who's us?" he asked, sitting up in his chair. He did not feel like being part of a large crowd tonight. He also wasn't sure he wanted to see Yoongi and Selina making out in front of him, not after everything he'd endured the past month.

"Just the guys. Namjoon's in town with his cousin. And you and me, of course. Yoongi will join us later. "

He hesitated. "Okay. Maybe just for a couple of hours. I'll see you there." He ended the call and sighed. He wouldn't let his friends know just how down in the dumps he had been feeling, so he went to the restroom to freshen up then plastered on his patented smile.

It didn't fool him, but hopefully it would fool everyone else.
