22: OCTOBER 2017 - Now
"Come on, Lulu," Megan whined. "The costume is great. You look fabulous."
Luisa looked at herself in the mirror. She tried pulling up the top of the Wonder Woman costume she was wearing. Megan insisted that they all do superhero costumes. She was wearing her sexy Batgirl costume, which looked amazing with her height.
She sighed and looked at her reflection again. Her legs looked stubby in comparison to Megan's. "My legs."
"Your legs look incredible," Megan said as she stood behind her. "Look at you! I know you've gotten a bit thin, but your boobs look great. You won't be single for long when any guy sees you in this getup. You'll definitely get lucky tonight." She winked at her through the mirror.
Luisa scoffed and pulled at the short skirt. "You're saying I look desperate."
"No, you look amazing," her friend insisted. "Now, come on. Sel and Yoongi are waiting in the car. There's no time to change. Really, Lu, you look beyond incredible." She began walking away. "Besides, I'm kind of excited to see Hoseok in his Batman outfit." She giggled.
With another sigh, Luisa trudged after her friend. It really wasn't the costume that was bothering her. It was the destination, and the people who were going to see her. Or rather, the person who was going to be there.
She and Seokjin had not spoken much even though they said they would. Seokjin had remained by Emily's side throughout her chemotherapy, but he'd also said he wouldn't marry her, no matter how much it might hurt Emily or anger her father.
Seokjin had told Luisa that she meant a lot to him. She knew she was a fool for holding on to that tiniest of hope and an even bigger fool for pushing him away. She had run their last conversation in her mind so many times. Had she messed up telling him to stay with Emily?
She heard from Selina and Yoongi that Seokjin seemed out of sorts lately. They said he seemed so sad. Luisa imagined it was because of their uncertain situation, not being able to be together. But she planned to rectify that very soon. Emily's treatment was done, and Seokjin was a free man now.
He had sent her a text a week after her birthday saying that Emily had finished her chemo treatments. He wanted to know if they could see each other. She hadn't answered him yet because she wasn't sure if the timing was right. She knew that the moment they were alone, sparks would fly and control would be lost. How could they indulge in their passion just days after Emily's last treatment? It seemed selfish and inappropriate. She chose not to respond to his message until she thought about it some more.
"Wow, Lulu," Selina said as soon as they both got into the backseat of Yoongi's car. She and Yoongi were dressed as Supergirl and Superman. "You look unbelievable. Doesn't she, honey? Look at her."
Yoongi's eyes were wide as he stared at Luisa. He gulped. "Uh...uh..." He inhaled loudly. "You look great, Lu." He didn't seem to be blinking. "Really great."
Selina slapped his arm. "Oh, my God, you idiot. Why are you staring at my friend like that?"
"You told me to look at her," Yoongi protested, turning back around. His cheeks were turning pink. "Jeez."
As soon as they entered the party, which was being held at a neighborhood bar, Luisa's eyes scanned the many faces. She was looking for one in particular. No one knew the situation between Luisa and Seokjin because she'd implored Seokjin to keep quiet. No one would have known why he'd broken up with Emily. It would've seemed sudden to everyone.
She, of course, felt bad forcing his silence, but at the same time, it was best that they didn't say anything about their relationship. They didn't have one yet. Besides, people might think that they'd been fooling around behind Emily's back. Despite being with Emily, Seokjin had said he cared about Luisa. He hadn't wavered on that, and there was a little ribbon of excitement that unspooled itself in her heart. Thinking about him always made her heart race.
And now that Seokjin was free from his commitment, she had decided to take the chance and let him know that she was still interested in him. They had circled around each other for so long. She had thought about it enough. The time to answer him was now. In person.
Almost as if she'd willed it, the crowd parted for a minute, and she saw him dressed in a doctor's white coat standing by the bar reading something off a card and talking to some people. A handsome doctor to heal her heart. It was a sign.
Luisa smoothed down the short skirt on her costume and took a deep breath. She had rehearsed what she'd say and how she'd say it.
"Seokjin, I know that I keep pushing you away, but the truth is I have cared about you even when I acted aloof and told you to stay with Emily. I didn't want you to think that I was easy or a pushover. I also didn't want you to think that you are a rebound because you are not. I genuinely like you and would like to see where this goes between us. You can think about it if you'd like. There's no pressure."
She shook her head. That probably didn't sound very romantic. Maybe she could be a little more emotional.
"Seokjin, you might think that I've never had feelings for you, but I have to be honest. My life has never been the same since that amazing and unexpected night we spent together. I've never forgotten how you made me feel. It's been so long since I have felt that alive, and I don't care how I might seem to you now. I want you to know that I really need you. I hope there's still a chance for us because you've always been on my mind."
She grimaced. Now that sounded somewhat desperate, but not as desperate as she felt. She was of a mind to just walk up to him and pull him down into a passionate kiss, much like what had started this whole thing in the first place. That would be quite a statement, and it would let him know exactly how she felt.
With another deep breath, she made her way through the crowd. She stopped right in front of him while he finished his conversation. He did a double-take when he saw it was her, and his eyes widened in surprise.
"Luisa," Seokjin managed to say before she pulled him down by the costume stethoscope he had around his neck and kissed him. The paper in his hands fluttered to the ground unnoticed. He was hesitant at first, then he responded enthusiastically.
"Luisa," he repeated, his voice husky. His hands squeezed her waist before he moved back. "H-How are you?"
Luisa smiled at him. "Seokjin. I'm so happy to see you. It's been so long. I'd really like to talk to you," she said breathlessly. Her lips were still tingling, and her face was warm. "Can we go outside for a minute?"
Seokjin nodded at the two guys he had been talking to. They left quietly. He stared at her, his tongue brushing along his bottom lip. He inhaled and glanced to the side before returning his attention to her. "Uh..."
"Just for a minute," she repeated. "There's something I want to say."
He took a slow breath. "Lu, there's something I want to say also."
She nodded. "Okay. Let's go outside."
"N-Now?"
"Jinnie!"
They both turned toward the voice. Emily, dressed in a tight, short nurse costume, was walking towards them. Her eyes darted between the both of them.
"Jinnie, everything okay?" she asked the tall man. "Are you leaving?"
Seokjin smiled. "Of course not. I was talking to Luisa. She just walked in a few minutes ago." He rubbed his thumb along his bottom lip as inconspicuously as possible.
Luisa gave Emily a tight smile. "Hi. It's good to see you. How are you?"
Emily grinned and leaned into Seokjin. "Oh, I feel great. Couldn't be better. So much has happened." She held up her left hand and wiggled her fingers. The diamond ring sparkled in the dim light. "Jinnie and I are engaged. Can you believe that?"
Luisa glanced briefly at Seokjin. His face was pale. "Engaged?" she whispered.
Emily smiled wider. "We haven't set the date, but I'm thinking sometime after Christmas. I'd love a winter wedding, and I don't want to wait too long." She leaned into Seokjin's body. "I think we've waited long enough. If he was able to put up with me all these long, difficult months, I think we were meant to be together. It was like a sign."
All the background noise seemed to fade away until there was only a dull thumping in Luisa's ears. She had to remind herself to breathe.
"That's wonderful," she managed to say when she realized that Emily had stopped talking. "I'm so happy for you. You definitely need to tell me where you're registered. It's so good to see you both. I'll get back to..." she glanced away, "...to my group. Bye."
She smiled one last time and bolted for the door.
She practically pushed her way through the crowd until she was outside. A few people stood about in conversation at the entrance. She took a few steps away from the door, gasping for air. Seokjin was engaged!
That was the last thing she expected to hear.
