1: MAY 2015 -- The Incident

An insistent buzzing sound forced Luisa Cruz out of her slumber. She reached out her arm blindly, trying to find the source of the sound. It was her phone. She shut it off without opening her eyes. With a sigh of relief, she attempted to go back to sleep. A moment later the phone rang again. Sighing, she reached out her arm and grabbed her phone off the nightstand. Her phone wasn't making a sound. Yet, she could still hear the ringing.

She opened her eyes slowly, wincing at the yellowish light seeping in through the blinds into the dark room. The sound was coming from the opposite side of the bed, so she turned her head.

"Oh, my God!" She reared back in alarm. Her scream startled the person next to her.

"Shit! What!" The man stirred. His hand fumbled with the phone until it stopped ringing.

Luisa noticed that he was shirtless, and her heart plunged to her stomach. What had she done? She sat up, but the room began spinning. She touched her temple, trying to stop the vicious thumping reverberating through her skull.

"Lu?" A raspy, masculine voice mumbled.

That sounded like... You've got to be kidding me, she thought.

"Wha...? You...? You're j-j..." She couldn't form a word. It couldn't be.

The young man turned his dark gaze toward her. "What's wrong?" he said with a grin. "You couldn't have forgotten my name. Jin. You were certainly screaming it last night. I don't think your roommates got any sleep."

Luisa brought the bed sheet up to her neck. "What are you doing here?" she hissed.

He ran a hand over his face. "Suffering from a vicious hangover, apparently. And an earache. Do you always make so much noise when you wake up?" He sighed and closed his eyes again. "This might be a deal breaker, Lu."

"Deal? What deal? What the hell are you doing here, Seokjin?" She scowled. "This is my apartment."

"I know," he replied with a yawn. "You invited me over last night."

"Why?" Her brown eyes were wide with disbelief.

"Geez, Lu, we're both, uh, naked here. Why do you think?" He placed his arm across his eyes. "You're supposed to be the smart one."

This was getting worse by the second. Had she really slept with Kim Seokjin? Kim Seokjin, of all people! Her eyes made a quick sweep over him. The bed sheet was tangled around his slim hips leaving his entire upper body exposed. Kim Seokjin, he of the wide shoulders and sculpted abs, the party boy of their university, the one who never studied yet still graduated with a rumored 3.8 GPA.

Graduation! Her mind raced back over the last forty-eight hours. She left her graduation ceremony to celebrate with her parents and her boyfriend. The very next day at a party, she was dumped by her boyfriend of three years. Charlie Ramos was the anti-Kim Seokjin. He was studious, diligent, serious—and he had broken up with her as if he were changing the channel on TV. She felt the hot tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

"Luisa?" Seokjin's concerned eyes were focused on her, and his voice held a hint of concern. "Is something wrong?"

"Of course something's wrong, you idiot!" she snapped. "You're here. We're here. How could this have happened? How in the world did this happen? This whole thing...this is wrong...this is..." She bit her lip to stop her rant.

He sat up. "Hey. Hey, it's okay," he said soothingly.

"It's not okay. It's definitely not okay. How could you even say that? You took advantage of me. I was drunk last night." She closed her eyes.

"Lu, hold up. I didn't take advantage of you. You took advantage of me, if I recall. I was minding my own business, you know, celebrating graduation, getting dumped by Camilla, then you...you came over and just...wow."

She opened her eyes and stared at him. "You were dumped? By Camilla? Last night?"

He raked his fingers through his unruly mop of dark hair. "Yeah. She...she said that she wanted to focus on her career and didn't have time for an unfaithful boyfriend. Well, those are my words. She actually called me a two-timing man whore."

"Okay, stop." Luisa sighed. "I can't believe this. Charlie broke up with me last night, too."

"What? Why?"

She shook her head then winced with pain. "Ah, who cares. It's over."

Seokjin nodded. "Yeah. Who cares. You were too good for him anyway. He's a pretentious bastard."

"Don't call him that." For some reason, she felt guilty having this conversation about her former boyfriend with a man she'd allowed into her bed. "Anyway, is this why, uh, why we're here?"

He shrugged. "Yeah. You came up to me at the party and gave me the biggest, hottest kiss I'd ever had. Right there in front of everybody. Quite the turn-on, let me tell you. Your tongue almost stopped my breathing—a sensation which I thoroughly enjoyed, by the way. My body almost exploded. I can tell you that every guy there was green with envy."

"Be serious. I didn't do that." Even as she denied it, she vaguely recalled the very action he described. Charlie had given her his It's not you, it's me speech and told her that he wouldn't be able to continue seeing her at this time. His schedule was too busy. It was best if they took a hiatus so that he could concentrate on his career goals. He'd used the word hiatus, as if they were planning to film a new season of a series when, in fact, he had made plans to move across the country without even telling her until last night.

He had given her that face that indicated he'd been thinking deeply about a topic. "I'm afraid I won't be able to continue our relationship. I wouldn't want it to hinder our professional aspirations. I applaud your desire to enter the educational field, but I feel my talents cannot be tethered to such a domestic cause. You must understand, Luisa, I need to navigate the difficult path toward..." Blah, blah, blah.

Pretentious bastard.

"...and I would've been happy simply with that intense makeout session," Seokjin was saying, "but then you told me that I was coming back to your place with you, and how could I say no when your eyes were promising all sorts of delights?"

"What?" She realized that she'd missed the first part of his explanation.

"I think you wanted to make sure that Charlie saw us together. I mean, you kissed me right in front of him. But I didn't know you'd broken up. Thought you were just trying to make him jealous. Well, you pulled me right past him. I decided putting my hand on your ass was just the right touch. I hope you didn't mind. I mean, you didn't object last night. You laughed."

She exhaled. Her headache was getting worse by the minute. "Okay, okay. Look, Seokjin, let's just keep this to ourselves, shall we? I don't want anybody to know that we...you know."

"Lu, I think everyone knows we hooked up last night," he said with a smile. "I mean, I saw Camilla's jaw on the floor. Serves her right for being such a bitch." He looked at her again. "You know, I didn't cheat on her. She chose to believe her stupid friend without even considering that her friend had been coming on to me for some time. I never—"

"Seokjin, okay. Just promise me that no one else will know. Other than the ones at the party last night." She made a move to get up but realized that she had nothing on. She pulled the bed sheet tighter around herself. "Well, can you get up?"

"For you, every time." He smirked and reached for her. "I'm up now."

"Eww, no! I didn't mean that," she said, swatting his hand away.

"Lu, it's okay. I don't see this as a random hookup. Believe me, I've been eyeing you since last year. If I'd known that you were interested, I would've dumped Camilla a long time ago. You're certainly an upgrade." He winked at her. "I didn't think I stood a chance, but last night proved that you and me are great together."

"You and I are great together," she corrected him without thinking.

He grinned wider. "Yeah, exactly."

"Oh, my God." She glanced around the room and spotted her robe hanging over the back of her desk chair. "Could you please turn around?" She waited until he had turned away from her then rushed from the bed and grabbed her robe.

"I don't know why you're acting this way. I saw every part of you last night. At least twice."

"Seokjin, please." She tightened the belt on her robe painfully. "This was a mistake, okay? We were both drunk and—and we'd both been dumped, so we were not in our right minds."

"You think this was a mistake?"

She rolled her eyes. Kim Seokjin couldn't be this dense. Why was he acting as if she was saying something wrong? She even saw a flash of hurt in his eyes.

"Don't you?" She walked around the bed, picking up his clothes. She tossed his pants and button-down shirt on the bed. She froze when she realized that she was holding his boxer briefs.

He snatched them out of her hands. "Could you...please?" He twirled his finger indicating for her to turn around.

She gave him her back. "I think that we were both just trying to forget what happened with our breakups, and we just wanted to have a little bit of a good time." She heard him slipping on his clothes and rushed to the bathroom to wash up. "I wasn't trying to hurt you," she continued speaking from the bathroom, "and I know you weren't trying to hurt me, so it's all okay. Right?"

"Yeah, yeah, Lu. No harm, no foul, is that it?" His voice sounded strained. "I guess you were just trying to make Charlie jealous, huh? Did he call you already?"

Luisa spat out the mouthwash and remembered her phone was still on the nightstand. She walked over and picked it up. Two texts from Megan. One from Selina. Nothing from Charlie. She looked up.

He was looking down at his phone. "I see Cam has left me three texts and two voice messages." He looked at her and winked. "Guess the jealousy got to her, huh? Good, but I wouldn't get back with her now if she paid me." He strode over to Luisa and placed his arms around her waist. "I'm not interested in anything she has to tell me. Not anymore. I sure wish you'd reconsider, though. I think we've got something here, Lu. I really do. This is incredible."

Luisa shrugged out of his embrace. "Sex does not equal a relationship."

"It's a start," he replied with his signature smirk. "Especially when it's so good."

"Seokjin."

"Okay, okay." He ambled to the bathroom. "How 'bout some breakfast?" he asked over the running water. "I'm starving. That was quite a workout last night."

Luisa huffed impatiently. Why was he acting as if this were a normal, everyday occurrence? Well, he was Kim Seokjin. This probably was ordinary in his book. He did say he hadn't cheated on Camilla, but gossip said otherwise. He was certainly quick to jump into her bed last night just minutes after his girlfriend broke up with him, so there might be some truth to those rumors. She remembered that she'd approached him first and then made out with him in front of Charlie. She had jumped into bed with him without any qualms. What did that imply about her?

Seokjin came out of the bathroom. "I get it, Lu. You want to treat this as some meaningless, revenge-driven hook-up, but I think you're wrong. We're not strangers. We've hung out in the same group for years. I think of you as a friend and now, perhaps something a bit more."

She crossed her arms defensively. He seemed so sincere, and she was afraid of letting her guard down. She wasn't sure that jumping into some type of sex-fueled relationship with Kim Seokjin was the best thing for her right now.

"I'm not trying to be cruel or inconsiderate, but we both know that what happened between us was a reaction to something else. It was like...like a rebound. We both needed to forget for a bit and just found a convenient person." She forced herself not to wring her hands like some drama queen. She hoped he would not insist because she knew she had very little strength to resist his handsome charm for much longer. "It meant nothing."

He studied her for a moment before picking up his sports coat from the floor. "Gee, thanks for not being cruel or inconsiderate." His tone was sarcastic. He walked to the bedroom door then spun around. "Should I apologize?"

She walked toward him. "No, of course not." She opened the door and indicated for him to leave the bedroom. She bumped into his back when he abruptly stopped right before opening the front door.

"I don't blame you. It's nobody's fault," she said softly.

"Good," he said and turned to face her. Without warning, he bent down and gave her a passionate kiss. He leaned his forehead on hers. "I hope you'll call me again. I'll never say no to you, sweetie." He flashed her a brilliant smile and walked out the door.

Luisa closed the door and slumped against it. She felt her legs tremble. Kim Seokjin left a lot of girls short of breath and weak in the knees. She shouldn't give herself any illusions about him. It was embarrassing enough already without becoming infatuated with him. Which she was not, by the way.

She needed to move on with her life instead of feeling sorry for herself. So, Charlie had left her. It was a long time coming anyway even if it had been a shock. She told herself to concentrate on her career and not on men. Not right now. And not on men who looked like Kim Seokjin.

Not that she was attracted to him. Because she wasn't.
