Fragments of The Past: Part 1

- Wow, she really is a lowlife, isn't she? - Joseph smirked, eyeing each of his friends at the table.

The cafeteria smelled of vegetables and fried meat. The spacious room continued to be filled with hungry students, who just wanted to sit down, relax, and talk amongst each other about all sorts of gossip, tests, teachers, and even personal problems.

Across from them sat alone a girl with messy, light brown hair and ocean blue eyes. She quietly poked at her food, tuning out the noises around her.

- You know, I heard her parents divorced - said a skinny boy in Joseph's group and glanced at the girl - She now lives with her pathetic mother!

- Yeah, I heard that the mother came to school once to pick her up wearing croaks! Freaking croaks! Can you imagine? - interrupted another guy with broad shoulders.

The girl glanced at them for a split second, but turned away immediately. She gripped her fork tightly with embarrassment, as if she was trying to strangle it. Obviously, she could hear everything said about her.

- Her grades also suck - Joseph continued - I wish she wasn't at our school. She's ruining the grades of the entire class!

- Then she should transfer to another one - said a third guy with glasses - We don't want her here!

- Of course we don't! Who in their right mind even would? - Joseph laughed, and the rest joined in afterwards.

The girl got up from her seat and walked off, leaving her tray on the table. Joseph looked on as she disappeared from the cafeteria.

I wish the earth would swallow me whole...
