Chapter-55
The bullet didn't hit me. It didn't hit Kelvin either.
Uncle Josh was riveted to the muddy rain-flooded ground, Jonas on top of him. The bullet had hit a tree nearby.
Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Jonas had entered the picture from the back and hurled himself upon Uncle Josh just a nanosecond before the bullet went off.
He saved us.
So it was Jonas over the call...
When and how Kelvin and Jonas got together, I did not know.
"How dare you!" Uncle Josh blustered in between their fight.
"You have to go through me first before you can touch any of them," Jonas gave out in full heroic voice.
While Jonas and Uncle Josh continued to have a hand to hand fight over the gun in Uncle Josh's grasp, I noticed Aunt Lucy taking the chance to point her own gun at Jonas. I propelled myself forward and shoved her away before she could do what she planned.
Aunt Lucy's gun had fallen on the forest floor, and now I was trying to restrain her from picking it up back. I never knew she was so strong, but I was no less now.
Kelvin attempted to join the fight too, but his hand wouldn't let him. It was clear that the pain was too much.
While the double fight was going on, the siren of a police car resonated from the distance, growing louder as it approached nearer. Uncle and Aunt looked at each other in terror. I couldn't really relate what was going on and how, but definitely tables had turned.
Uncle Josh thrust Jonas aside with a sudden force as Aunt Lucy did the same on me, both preparing to escape for their lives. The effect was greater because of the rainwater over the Earth, and we both were saved from a serious collision with a tree just by luck.
I regained my balance with the support of the same tree and immediately turned around to see how far Uncle Josh and Aunt Lucy had managed to run. As they both prepared to hurry towards their car for the escape, a known car blocked their path. The sound of the police siren still persisted.
From the car, came out Brian.
"Not yet, my dear Uncle and Aunt," Brian made his remark.
He held up the loudspeakers in his hands from which the siren sound was coming. So it was Brian, not the cops.
"You!" Uncle Josh bawled.
"How did you get here!"
"I always doubted Aunt Lucy," Brian revealed. "Been keeping an eye on her in the hospital, and here we are."
Uncle Josh took a quick glance at each of our faces before saying, "Unfortunately kids, you all can't do anything to me."
"Well, fortunately, someone else can," Jonas interposed.
"Someone else?" Aunt Lucy questioned.
"Look there," Jonas replied, pointing towards their back.
From a distance, the headlights of a police car flashed.
Before Uncle and Aunt could take in the next unexpected danger and react, the police car had already approached. The car door opened instantaneously, and two police officers came out.
The rain had subsided now. The officers made their way straight towards Uncle Josh and handcuffed him. In the meantime, Jonas rushed towards Kelvin, notifying him that the medical team was coming.
"Excuse me, officer, what evidence do you have that makes you think you can arrest me?" Uncle Josh protested.
"Here's the evidence," a third officer replied, getting out of the car.
He was holding a giant translucent bag that seemed to contain copious important stuff inside. The officer took out the evidence one by one, providing the narratives.
There were a few more pieces of evidence apart from what Uncle Nick had collected. One piece of evidence was missing though.
The one in my bag; the one that involved Kelvin.
"And this is the CCTV footage from the fourth floor of Valdez Office last night," the officer said as he displayed the last piece of evidence.
"And what does your footage contain?" Uncle Josh questioned.
"See it yourself," the officer added as he got out a laptop from the car.
Another car representing a mini ambulance whooshed into the forest and stopped at the rear of the police car. A nurse and a doctor came out.
While the medical team aided Kelvin, the officer presented the footage on the laptop.
The empty fourth floor of Valdez Office was visible. And it remained empty throughout the footage. Where was Uncle Nick and Uncle Josh?
"According to the footage video, nothing happened on the fourth floor last night," the officer described.
It couldn't be.
"See!" Uncle Josh exclaimed. "They all are trying to frame me here."
"But there's a huge catch over here," the officer interrupted.
The officer took out a photograph from the evidence bag. It was a photograph of the empty fourth floor of our Office.
"Mr. Joseph Valdez was clever enough to insert this photograph in front of the CCTV lens," he explained, "so that it appears that nothing happened there last night."
"So that's how he escaped from the law's eyes even after attempting to murder Uncle Nick..." Brian commented in fury.
"Just one blunder," Jonas spoke now. "He didn't realize that the CCTV could record audio as well."
The same officer played back the footage again, this time with the audio.
"Welcome Brother Nick," came Uncle Josh's voice. "Collecting evidence against me to present in front of the court, eh?
"Josh, you very well know that I could have done that way back," Uncle Nick's voice bellowed.
"I just didn't want my only brother left to rot in jail. I just hoped-" his voice broke, "-perhaps you will regret what you've done."
"Unfortunately I don't," Uncle Josh replied nonchalantly.
"And if you didn't realize yet, everyone's suspicions are currently on you, Brother. After all, the property goes to your name now, why will anyone ever doubt that I stole Brother Arn's will?"
"Everyone will know now, after I unravel your dark conspiracy," Uncle Nick warned.
"Well Brother, only if you live to tell the tale, that is," Uncle Josh threatened back.
"Everyone will think that you murdered Brother Dave and Brother Arn for the property, and today's incident will be a complete accident."
"Josh, I'm warning you. It's not only me who knows about it-"
"Who are you calling?"
Uncle Nick was calling me; I connected the dots.
"Ah, so Amyra it is!"
"Very well plan," a malicious laugher roared. "But guess what, mine is better."
There was a prolonged whistling.
I had heard this part over the call.
"Uncle Nick-" it was my voice, "Are-you-okay?"
There was a loud thud; the phone had fallen to the floor.
"Goodbye, Brother Nick!"
"Josh no-!" those were the last words from Uncle Nick.
"Do we need any more proof, Mr. Valdez?" one of the officers asked rhetorically.
Uncle Josh didn't have a comeback this time. There was no way he could escape.
"Officer," Brian called.
"She's involved in it too," he let them know, indicating Aunt Lucy.
"Is she?" the officer questioned, turning towards Kelvin.
"Yes, she is," Kelvin replied solemnly.
"Excuse me," Uncle Josh interrupted. "You are asking him?"
"HIM?" he repeated.
"For your kind information officer, this man here-Senior Detective Kelvin Xaviers, was a part of my plan too."
