Chapter-42

"Forty-eight, Forty-nine, Fifty," Jonas counted down.

Kelvin gave up on 'Fifty' and slackened his body, letting me down gradually. He had been giving pushups with me sitting on his back.

"You were supposed to do till hundred, Xav Bro!" Jonas reminded.

"You first give ten, then I'll give a hundred," Kelvin countered.

"Yessss, now June's turn!" I exclaimed with ardour.

I was enjoying the whole thing after all.

"Not a great deal at all," Jonas bluffed.

Jonas flexed his biceps and took his position in a proud manner while I settled on his back with zeal.

"One...two...three...four...five," Kelvin started the countdown.

Jonas plummeted down to the floor with a sharp thud at 'Five'. As expected, I lost my balance and fell too.

"Someone just said it wasn't a great deal," Kelvin jested as he helped me get up.

"You're heavy Amy!" Jonas tried to shift the blame on me.

"Did you just call me fat!" I roared, feeling offended.

"Am I actually heavy?" I asked Kelvin with a threatening look.

"Good question," he bantered.

I stepped on his foot as a punishment for saying that.

"Let me finish first-" he said after an 'Ouch'.

"How do you think I carried you from the forest till here, that too with a bullet wound in my arm, if you were heavy?" he chuckled.

My face went scarlet as I smiled like a dimwit.

A beep sound vibrated from the table, to which Kelvin instantly responded. Mr. Detective never missed a call from work.

When Kelvin had left the room to answer the call, I sat down beside Jonas to tell him about last day's incident. Bruno hopped from the treadmill and settled on my lap with his tongue hanging out in exhaustion. Apparently, Kelvin had been giving my pet 'fitness training' which Bruno surprisingly seemed to enjoy.

"You threw the pipe!" Jonas exclaimed after I was done narrating the whole incident.

"Yep, and he didn't pick it up again," I shrugged.

"Do you realize that he's actually changing because of you, Amy?" he smiled.

"He said that I'm stubborn like him," I revealed with a blush.

"Let me prepare the wedding bells already," Jonas teased, nudging me by the elbow like always.

Before I could reply back, my phone rang. It was a call from Brian. After so long...

I didn't miss a single second in picking up the call. I was hearing his voice after weeks.

"How are you?" I asked in a feeble tone.

"Not really great, how have you been?" he replied.

"I heard that you live in the detective's house now."

"Yea. At least it doesn't feel suffocating here," I muttered. "So, where are you now?"

"Still in my grandma's house."

So he never returned to Valdez Mansion as well.

"By the way Amy, I got to know about the will. The property is going to Uncle Nick's name now, right?"

"Yea."

"Did you know that there's been an uproar between Uncle Nick and Uncle Josh recently?"

I didn't know.

"Is that so? But why?" I asked.

There was a moment of silence before he answered, "Property matters, you know."

He disconnected the call without continuing the conversation further. Well, I still didn't get the purpose of his call.

Kelvin returned a few minutes later, and I let him know about Brian's call.

"I have some work, need to go," he announced out of nowhere.

"Go where?" I inquired.

"Bureau," he answered before making his way towards the front door.

Why did everyone have to act weird on the same day?

Well, I didn't bother much about the dispute between my uncles. It was natural, I assumed.

Mom called in the evening, her regular routine. We had our usual one hour long video call, and it ended with me promising to visit her the next day. It was Friday. I had to definitely visit her this time if I wished to stay alive.

My phone beeped with another call as soon as the last one ended. I didn't have to see the name to know who it was. Sierra and Aunt Nora brightened up another one hour of my day with their usual heartwarming conversations. Towards the end of the call, something clicked in my mind.

"Aunt, is everything okay between Uncle Nick and Uncle Josh?" I asked, recalling Brian's words.

"I think so. There hasn't been much disturbance in the house lately, or at least we didn't see any," she answered.

"Nick seems really disturbed lately though," she added with a note of tension.

"Where is Uncle Nick now?"

"Oh, he has just left for the office building. Said that there's something important."

I glanced over at the clock. It was fifteen past ten already. What important work did he have at this hour?

"Where's Uncle Josh?" I asked further.

"Joseph isn't at home either. Not sure where he went, but he left before Nick."

Aunt Nora cut the call abruptly to have a check on Hannah and Hazel after they had produced a continuous clank noise in the background.

I just hoped everything was indeed alright, as Aunt Nora mentioned. There was so much calm in the past few days that now even the slightest hint of disturbance bothered me. Even Kelvin had not returned yet; it was already six hours since he left.

As if to confirm my strange strong instincts, the most unexpected call popped out next. A call from Uncle Nick.

As soon as I picked up the call, a very familiar voice spoke, but it wasn't Uncle Nick.

"Ah, so Amyra it is!"

"Very well plan," a malicious laugher roared. "But guess what, mine is better."

I recognised the voice distinctly to be Uncle Josh's. A whistling re-sounded from the other side of the phone. Something was definitely wrong.

"Uncle Nick-" I yowled. "Are-you-okay?"

The call got disconnected preceded by a loud thud. The phone had probably fallen to the floor.

At that point, I was terrified beyond measure. I hastily made my way to June's room and informed him about the incident.

"We should go immediately," he advised, getting out the car keys instantly.

Uncle Nick must be in our office, as mentioned by Aunt Nora. Mrs. Arabella had gone to visit her sister that day, so we had to take Bruno with us. Settling him on the back seat, we started our journey towards Valdez Office Building.

Tables seemed to turn; the person I had been suspecting all along was the victim now. I should have never doubted Uncle Nick... I had never regretted this much in life. I just hoped he was safe till we reached there.

I didn't want to get involved in this case anymore but seemed like I was unconsciously gravitating back to it. No matter how much I tried running away from this, I was aware by now that it would eventually confront me some day or other itself, even if I didn't.
