Chapter-36
Before I could realize it, the boat had already kicked off once again. A shiver of excitement ran down my spine as we launched off the boat when it picked up speed. A winch, which seemed much like a fishing pole, lifted the chute from the boat so smoothly that we were in the air even before I knew it!
Adrenaline surged through my body as we soared over the pristine ocean. The sound of the boat's roaring slowly faded away as we ascended higher and higher and was replaced by June's whoops now. I joined in too; for some reason, the fun doubles when you begin cheering your heart out.
"How you feeling?"
Kelvin had to ask the question twice before I could hear it properly amidst the song of nature.
"Heavenly," I replied with bated breath.
That's the only word I could think of at that moment.
The boat beneath us appeared to get smaller and smaller as the whole coastline came into view. Suddenly, I could see so much more than the trees, the buildings, and the landmarks that normally confined my views on the ground. The world felt like a much larger and more impressive place from this height. I had experienced something similar during plane journeys, but this one was completely different. I was flying on my own this time, literally feeling a part of the birds flying past me. The wind on my face, nature's whimsy at 700 feet above sea level, and the sheer thrill of being able to look deep into the water from such an angle-nothing felt less than magical.
Life seemed so beautiful.
The fact that I was experiencing the most breathtaking experience of my life with these two people whom I had just met a few weeks back was sort of funny. Now I was sure that I wasn't afraid of falling because I knew they would catch me if I fell. Like they did in real life, in the past two weeks.
We remained at that height for a few minutes before the crew let us free fall into the sea.
"There comes the best part!" Jonas exclaimed.
A chilling sensation numbed my skin as my toes touched the cold water. The crew members somehow gave us just as much water we wanted, although some of it splashed till my knees. I was playing with the water using my feet just like a child. Kelvin and Jonas initially laughed at my antic, but eventually they imitated it too. I held Kelvin and June's hand firmly on both sides as we levitated to 700 feet once again. This time we three screamed in joy together. We glided in the air for a few more minutes before the winch gently reeled us back to the boat's deck.
I didn't want it to end already.
The same man who had fastened our harness earlier now helped us undo it. Frank showed us some pictures that he had captured in his DSLR during our parasailing. I smiled as I realized that these were our first pictures together.
A great memory, indeed.
Kelvin and Frank took out their credit cards to pay the parasailing company after they had dropped us safely back to the shore. It must have been expensive.
Well, the experience was totally worth it though.
Frank had some urgent work, so he bid us adieu shortly afterward as he prepared to leave. I noticed Samantha whispering a separate goodbye to Kelvin before departing, but I tried to pretend that I didn't see it.
"Wanna dive?" Jonas asked out of nowhere after they were gone.
"Dive?" I reiterated with a gulp.
"Actually I-" I muttered, but then paused. "Actually, let's just do it."
"You sure?" Kelvin asked with his eyebrows raised.
It felt like days now since he hadn't raised them.
"Well.....YOLO," I grinned.
"Yellow?" he tried to repeat, not realizing that he changed the whole word in the process.
"Ah Xav Bro, don't be so backdated. You Only Live Once," Jonas chortled while pulling Kelvin's cheeks, which I could say from Kelvin's reaction, annoyed him more than anything else in the world.
"So, I start!" Jonas announced, backing off from us.
He sprinted to a position about twenty meters away from the coast and gave us a thumbs-up, indicating that he was ready. Within the blink of an eye, he was racing towards the sea at the speed of light, and I was left absolutely awe-struck by how he hurled himself into the sea with full force, without a second thought.
For a moment, he was completely submerged in the water, with no trace of his body to be seen.
"Did he just drown-" I muttered in apprehension when his head emerged again.
Thank God.
"Woohoo!" he rejoiced. "What are you two waiting for?"
"Is that how it's done-?" I asked Kelvin with extra broadened eyes.
"I guess so," he chuckled. "I'll go next then, you will get to see how it's done again."
He proceeded towards June's former position in full spirits and made his run without any warning. To my double astonishment, he gave a backflip as his toes escaped the sand before diving upright into the sea, splashing almost a whole bucket of water behind him.
His head came into view a few seconds later too, just like Jonas. Was it that easy?
"Come on, Amy!" Jonas called.
I gulped before creeping towards the same position from where they both had started. A hazy view of the coastline flashed in front of my eyes, with the two idiots at the center. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and started running.
Well, the closing of the eyes was temporary, so was my run. I slowed down my pace as I approached the bank; to be real honest, it was to the point where it felt like I was tiptoeing.
"Is that a new form of diving?" Jonas jested.
"Yea, in Amy's style," I defended as I sluggishly dipped my foot into the water.
The coldness was almost freezing me at the spot. I really wondered how Kelvin and Jonas were even enjoying it out there.
I walked towards them; yes I walked in the water, my feet still in contact with the sand below, not letting myself float yet. When the water was almost at my chin length, I halted.
I watched as Jonas submerged his head into the water once and pulled it out after a few seconds. Water dripped down his amber hair like the melting of an icicle.
"Too good, isn't it?"
His voice was muffled by the little amount of water he had just unwantedly gulped.
"Try it out," he encouraged.
"Me-?" I mumbled.
"Xav Bro, why don't you show it to Amy?" Jonas suggested as he continued swimming in a circle.
"Hold your breath," Kelvin advised as he held his nose using his fingers.
I followed. He was floating, unlike me.
"Now duck down!" he exclaimed all too suddenly, disappearing into the sea.
I muttered "God, save me please," before shutting my eyes and repeating what he did. I could see an unclear image of him through the transparent water. Bubbles escaped my mouth as I tried my best in controlling my breath, but eventually lifted up my head with an abrupt upthrust when I failed to do so.
I noticed Kelvin lifting his head out of the water too at the same time, probably worried about my action. I was losing my balance, so I clutched his arms for support.
"What happened?" he asked, looking at my hands.
"Is everything alright?" Jonas inquired, swimming back towards us.
"Kelvin, I want to tell you something," I gasped as I looked at him and then Jonas.
Maybe it was the right time to confess it. If not now, then when?
"Yes?" he asked in anticipation.
"I-" I mumbled.
Should I just say it?
"You-?" he whispered. "You what?"
"What in the midst of ocean..." Jonas muttered.
"I can't swim," I confessed finally as my grip loosened, and I sank into the water.
"Amy!" a double-echo reverberated in my ears.
When I had assumed that I had drowned and was dead, I suddenly felt the cold water leaving me. My head was above the water again.
"You can open your eyes now, you didn't die yet," I heard Jonas giggling.
"Seriously, what was all that?" Kelvin questioned, involuntarily spurting out some seawater from his mouth.
Wait, we were still at the sea. That means I was floating- no, they both were holding me up from both sides. I would be the dumbest person alive, no doubt.
"Actually, I wanted to test you both," I murmured with a chuckle. "If you two save me or not."
"Are you mad? You could have drowned," Kelvin boomed.
"I know you guys wouldn't let me," I smiled.
"Well, that we won't," Jonas chuckled back.
Kelvin and Jonas pulled me out of the water, and we three flopped down on the sand. Every part of my shattered heart seemed to heal as I inhaled the sea-breeze, the salty tang of the sea still persisting in my tongue. The sun was about to set.
The sound of waves crashing against each other reverberated in my ears as a single wave hit my feet, washing away the sand beneath my toes slowly. The glowing ball of fire was going to meet the horizon at any moment.
Kelvin bought a colossal coconut with three straws, so we three sipped the sweet coconut water in turns. I captured every single moment of the sunset in my soul while Jonas captured it on his phone through a time-lapse. Rich hues of glistening golden, tranquil tangerine, calm crimson, and majestic magenta blended with the sky like fresh colors brushing across an artist's canvas. The sun sank slowly into the water until it completely merged with the horizon. The biggest star had set, giving rise to a thousand minors.
"Let's go now," Kelvin suggested after a few minutes, rising up.
He slumped back to the ground all too abruptly, and it took me a while to understand that Jonas had pulled him back.
"See, a shooting star!" he exclaimed, pointing towards the sky which had turned dark in the blink of an eye.
"Make a wish," I whispered.
"Neh, I don't believe in such things," Kelvin shrugged.
I would just be wasting the opportunity to make my wish if I wasted time arguing with him, so I decided not to. I was about to close my eyes to make a wish when something caught my eyes. Kelvin had his face turned towards the other side, and I definitely noticed him muttering something under his breath.
I chuckled to myself before making my own wish. Well, this would be the second wish I ever made seeing a shooting star, the first one being 'to meet my mom again' when I was little. I had stopped making wishes ever since because that one never got fulfilled, but now that it did, I just tried out making a second one.
I turned around to find Jonas still making his wish with his eyes closed.
"You two done with your silly wishes or something?" Kelvin asked in his signature grumpy tone as he got up again.
"Yes, done," Jonas replied, opening his eyes.
Kelvin had already started walking away when I called him back.
"Kelvin."
When he turned around, I asked, "What wish did you make?"
The look on his face clearly said that he was caught red-handed, so he just shrugged with a chuckle before turning away to leave again.
"Let's go," he called.
"I swear I saw him making a wish," I whispered to Jonas.
"Interesting," he commented with twinkling eyes.
"What did you ask for?" I asked.
"That our trio lasts forever," he revealed with a grin.
I stared at him in astonishment for a moment.
"What?" he reacted.
"I wonder if it's you who copies me all the time, or is it just that we sync too much," I chuckled.
I had made the same wish.
