Chapter-28

I opened my eyes as the sun's benign rays gently kissed my delicate face. A wet towel slid down my forehead as I lifted my head. The first thing I saw was Kelvin napping with his back against the bedside table, his head resting on the corner of my bed.

He spent the entire night on the floor.

I smiled as I saw his right hand still on top of mine, our fingers tangled up. He could have slept on the bed if he wished to, yet he decided to sleep on the floor. What a gentleman!

I rested my chin on my hand as I observed him. He looked so cute while sleeping, with his messed up black hair covering his temple. I subconsciously moved my hand forward to shift the locks from his eyes when he stirred.

I instantly pulled my hand back as he opened his eyes. His green eyes fell on our tangled hands, before looking at me. As if a reflex action, we both pulled our hands away in unison at the sudden eye contact.

"Did you have a good sleep?" he asked while stifling a yawn.

"Yea," I replied.

I indeed did.

He pressed his palm against my forehead before muttering, "Hmm, the fever has got down too."

"Thank you-" I mumbled after he was done checking my temperature, "-for taking care of me last night."

He replied with a smile as he rose up to leave. I noticed him stretching his neck with some difficulties. He didn't have a good sleep...

Did he stay up the whole night to look after me?

I stared at my hands after he left the room and found myself blushing for no reason.

Was I starting to like Kelvin?

I freshened up and ambled out of the room to find Kelvin brewing two mugs of coffee on the table.

"Coffee?" he asked, offering me one.

Our fingers brushed as I took the coffee mug from him, and I don't know why but that sent a strange sensation through my body. No particular reason. He rested his back against the wall as he took a sip from his mug.

This posture suited him so much.

"Aren't you going to the bureau today?" I inquired after taking a sip.

"Decided not to. Jonas isn't here as well, and I don't think it will be good to leave you alone."

He stayed back for me?

"Someone seems to have started caring about me," I chuckled, pulling his legs.

To my surprise, he was stealing looks from me. I definitely noticed his lips curving into a small smile behind the coffee mug as a slight pink tint flushed on his cheeks. Wait, he just blushed-

Did I just catch him off guard?

"Well as you said, you're paying me for this," he shrugged as he took another sip.

"Makes sense," I commented.

I felt silly for expecting some other reply. The new feeling couldn't be mutual.

"I'll go to Amberson house today," I said after a while.

I had made up my mind that I would reconcile with my mom.

"I'm glad you decided on that," he smiled.

"Can you give me a ride there?" I asked.

I could drive by myself, but I had this weird urge of spending some more time with him.

He considered for a while before replying, "Get ready then."

I decked up in the same jumpsuit that I wore yesterday; well, not that I had many options to choose from. I had just brought a limited number of clothes with me.

I prepared to tie my hair in front of the washroom mirror when I decided to let it stay open today.

"Are you done yet?" Kelvin's voice called out just when I thought of brushing my hair a bit.

"Coming!"

I loped out of the room in such a hurry that I almost stumbled down on my way. Kelvin was already waiting at the door.

I stopped at Mrs. Arabella's house to take Bruno while he started the car. I thanked her with a genuine smile which eventually altered the frown on her face to a gaiety. Bruno hopped out in full spirits when he noticed me.

"Going to meet her," I beamed.

I assumed she already knew who I meant by 'her'. I didn't get to see her reaction though because I had already made my way towards the car, thanks to Kelvin's persistent calls. I settled myself on the front seat beside Kelvin, with Bruno on my lap.

"Seatbelt," he ordered.

I huffed out as I fastened mine. If there was a contest on discipline, no doubt he would be the winner.

Minutes passed by as a still stretching silence lingered during the journey. I was cooking up pretexts in my mind to commence a conversation.

Idea. I turned on the radio with the hope that it would do the work. As if the day was in my favour, a romantic song played right on the first press. Perfect.

Just when I expected the atmosphere to lighten, Kelvin turned off the radio. I turned sideways to throw a frown at his action.

"No distraction during driving," he answered casually.

I knitted my eyebrows and gave up. No one can ever try to be romantic with this boring guy.

My newly discovered feelings might as well expire even before blooming.

Jaded by the hushed journey, I caressed Bruno's hazelnut fur. It gave off a cherry rose fragrant along with an extra soft texture that day. Mrs. Arabella must have given him a satisfying shower.

Out of nowhere, an enthralling hum vibrated in my ears.

Did he turn on the radio again?

I turned to check the radio, but it was off. Where was it coming from then-?

Kelvin was humming it.

His humming was so spellbinding, no doubt why I had believed it to be a singer's voice. I looked back at the guitar in his room and the musical notes in my memory; can he sing?

I resisted the urge to ask him, not wanting to interrupt the soothing flow. I was so captivated by his tune that I didn't realize I was gazing at him with my mouth agape in admiration. When he noticed it, he paused his humming.

"Why did you stop?" I asked, irked by the termination.

"Stop what?"

"You were just humming-"

"Was I?" he played as if he had no clue about it.

I could clearly see him trying his best to stifle a laugh though.

I crossed my arms to convey my annoyance. He totally ignored it and focused on his steering wheel.

"You can sing."

It wasn't a question.

"Or can I?" he shrugged his shoulders with humor.

"Yes you can," I snorted. "Now sing a song."

"Uh huh, neh."

No doubt he was enjoying my exasperation.

"Please," I requested with a puppy face.

I was sure he was going to fall for it, but turns out he didn't. He tittered a little before diverting the topic by pointing his hand towards Amberson house, which was now in front of us.

"See, we have reached already," he declared, halting the car.

My luck.

"I really hate you, you know," I whispered.

"I know," he whispered back, "and I absolutely love that."

I raised an eyebrow. As if he knew.

Nevertheless, I subconsciously chuckled as we got out of the car. Again, no particular reason.

Jonas was already standing at the marble threshold, waiting for our arrival; Kelvin had probably informed him before coming.

"Amy!" he squeaked, raising a hand to wave at me.

When we got within proximity, he gestured me to follow him into the house.

"Mom is in the hall room," he informed in a hushed tone, "I haven't told her yet that you're coming."

"Bet she's going to be on the seventh cloud after the surprise," he simpered.

He rang the doorbell to which Lizelle answered.

"Ahh Lizelle, why did you have to interrupt in the middle!"

He shook his head, displaying disappointment.

"Go and call Mom now."

Lizelle left in complete bafflement, and within a minute, Mom came into view.

"Amy-" she almost broke into tears seeing me.

I hadn't planned on what to say to her; nonetheless, at that instant, it felt like actions could speak more than words. So, without a word, I darted towards my mom and flung my arms around her.

"Mom-" I sobbed in her chest as I felt her arms embracing me tighter.

It was the most euphoric feeling in the world.
