Chapter-23
I twisted and turned in my bed to find Bruno for using him as a side pillow. Where was that furball? It took me quite a while to realize that he wasn't sleeping with me that day. I rose up while rubbing my eyes and glimpsed at the floor to discover Bruno sound asleep on the mattress. Kelvin and Jonas weren't there.
I ambled out of the room to check if they were in the house. I found both of them in the living space; Jonas was examining the circuit board, probably trying to fix the light issue while Kelvin was tying his shoelace.
How about starting the day with some fun?
"Taki Taki Rumba!" I muttered in a deliberate curious tone while passing by Kelvin.
I had to keep one hand over my mouth to prevent an outburst of laughter seeing his reaction.
"Miss Amyra, if you dare to utter that one more time, then I swear I'm going to kick you out of my house," he tried to say it in a serious tone, giving me a frown.
"Fixed it!" Jonas exclaimed at the right time, saving me.
He closed the circuit board and straightened his collar with a proud look.
"Proud of you. Now fetch our breakfast box from Mrs. Arabella's house while I start the car," Kelvin said.
"Bye bye Amy," Jonas smiled before leaving.
Kelvin left without a word. Nothing extraordinary.
The day was mundane, except the part when Aunt Nora and Sierra called.
"Oh and Amy, I forgot to tell you something," Aunt Nora blurted just the moment when I was about to disconnect the call.
"I asked Mr. Xaviers about you, and he gave quite a polite reply. I'm relieved that he's over his rude attitude now."
"How did you ask him?" I inquired in confusion.
"He came here today. He was having a conversation with Nick in the study room for quite a while."
Kelvin went to Valdez Mansion?
And he was talking with Uncle Nick...
But why?
"Did you see him there before?" I asked.
"Yea, he came to talk with Joseph a week before. Didn't see him after that, not sure if he came though."
That must be on the day when Jonas and I had encountered him during our secret mission to the Valdez Mansion.
Something was up with him. I had to find out.
I didn't let Aunt Nora realize that I was suspicious of something; well, she was already ignorant of the treachery her husband was planning against the family.
Or was she? Well, Aunt Nora would be the last person on Earth I would ever doubt.
It was quite a long call; Kelvin and Jonas were probably back by now. I marched out of my room to find Kelvin, determined to get my answers from him today.
I didn't have to go to their room because I found both of them right in the small gym corner. Jonas was relaxing with his back against the treadmill, his eyes glued to his phone screen. Kelvin was giving his regular pushups, but this time he was in a sleeveless t-shirt. I knew I should mind my own business, yet I couldn't help but notice how his muscles flexed with each turn. He had the perfect physique any guy would work out for. I got so lost in observing him that I didn't realize when he completed a hundred pushups already. There wasn't any trace of tiredness on his face though, as if it was his usual thing. However, his jet black hair was wet in places with sweat.
He got up and motioned towards my direction. Wait, why was he coming towards me?
I gulped and stepped back by an inch with his every step forward until my back collided with the table along the wall. He muttered something which I didn't hear, probably due to the nervousness.
"Did-you-say-something?" I stuttered.
"Yes, step aside."
"What?"
"Step aside," he used his hands to gesture to me this time.
"Oh-" I hastily moved a few inches to my right, "-sorry."
"Weird," he murmured as he grabbed a towel from the place where I was standing a few seconds earlier.
I sighed in relief. So it was the towel. I felt silly for assuming I don't know what.
He began wiping his forehead but paused in the middle to throw another stare at me.
"By any chance, Miss Valdez, were you checking me out?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Of course not!" I exclaimed too quickly, as well as loudly than I ought to.
"How do you always end up here during the time I'm working out?"
"Coincidence," I replied.
"Or is it my overwhelming charm that you cannot resist," he chuckled as he motioned towards me again-
Wait no, he was keeping back the towel on the table. Silly me again.
What was wrong with me?
"Oh please, in your dreams." I rolled my eyes while crossing my arms, in order to give off a 'damn care' vibe.
"Well, we all can see who's dreaming," he teased.
"Right Jonas?"
"Right!" Jonas replied without losing eye contact with his phone.
"June!" I yelled, throwing him a look of threat.
"Yea?" he finally looked up.
I furrowed my brows.
"Oh- that one? I didn't actually hear what Xav bro said," he grinned, revealing his thirty-two teeth.
"Never mind," he added with a shrug.
I produced an exaggerated sigh and turned back to Kelvin. For some minutes, I had completely drifted away from my purpose of coming here. I had to ask him something.
"Kelvin, you went to Valdez Mansion today."
It wasn't a question.
He just replied with a nod and prepared to move towards the treadmill in an attempt to avoid the topic.
"You went there even on the day when June and I had gone looking for evidence, and you were in the forest too," I continued in a loud and serious tone.
I was determined to not stop today until he answered my questions.
"Something's going on, tell me what," I pressurized.
"None of your business."
"You always say that and ignore my questions," I busted out. "But listen up Kelvin Xaviers, this is my business. I'm a big part of this case and I deserve to know every bit of it."
He looked at me intently, taking in my seriousness. He probably understood that I wouldn't let him go today without answering my questions.
"Miss Amyra," he replied calmly, "you aren't the only one investigating this case, you know."
I didn't know. I thought he was out of the case right when Uncle Josh had dismissed him from it.
"But you said that you are not-"
"That's why I'm a detective," he said with a weak smile.
Before I could respond, a phone beeped from the direction of the table. Kelvin unattached the phone from the charger and left the room as he picked up the call.
"Xav Bro is serious about this case you know, even though he wouldn't show it," Jonas commented after a while.
I nodded. It was indeed really difficult to interpret what goes on in his mind.
"He has always liked working by himself," he sighed.
I wish Kelvin didn't prefer working alone. I wanted to know things that he knew.
"Jonas," Kelvin called out, coming out of the room a couple of minutes later.
"Your mom had called," he muttered in an apprehensive tone.
