Chapter Seven
This one is a rather short one, hope you still enjoy it!
Nya's POV
Something is wrong. Very, very wrong.
I don't know, really. It's just a strange feeling. I can't tell what it is.
We were all sat in Skylor's noodle shop, shoved right at the small corner table in the back.
Kai and Skylor, of course, wanted to sit next to each other to take photos and stuff. Which left me stuck with the one and only, Jay Walker.
He was awfully quiet though. On the one hand...I get it. Sometimes, it's easier to be quiet. But when I'm quiet, I'm usually thinking about something. He was just messing with his food, not taking a bite.
I guess I've been too harsh on him. Yeah, he ruined my life and all that, but I guess I've ruined his too. I mean, I just came in, almost got him beat up by my...not so nice (ex?)boyfriend and basically stole his bedroom. That counts as ruining-someone's-life worthy, right?
I guess I should try and talk to him.
"Not hungry?" I told him with a small smile.
He turned towards me before looking back at his noodles. "I guess you could say that," he blushed.
As I slowly inspected him, he started growing redder and redder. That's when I finally spotted the difference.
"Do you need help with that?" I gestured at his chopsticks, holding back a chuckle. He hasn't changed at all, has he?
"No..." he mumbled, pouting his lip before giving in. "Yes..."
I smiled, placing his hands on mine as I guided him through the process. His hands would tremble from time to time, but I guess that's what happens when you're not used to it.
On the other hand, I was not used to how close we were. When was the last time I held hands with someone again? Like two weeks ago. When was the last time I enjoyed it? I can't even remember.
His hands weren't hard and big like Morro's. They were softer; softer than I remember, at least. And they weren't too big or too small either; they were just the perfect size to fit in mine.
Ew, Nya, you sound like Kai sweet-talking Skylor. Which he was doing right now, so great.
I finally pulled away, ignoring my heating cheeks. It's really cold today, isn't it?
"It's... easier than I expected," Jay told me, flashing me his signature goofy grin. "Then again, I'm not really in the mood for food. How about some dessert? I saw a cotton candy stand outside that boutique we passed by earlier."
How could I forget about his obsession with cotton candy? I'm not much of a sweet tooth, but he always used to be the only person able to convince me to eat that sugary cloud.
"Sorry if this food doesn't fit your standards, Mr Walker," Skylor turned to him with a glare. "But since you want to go for a dessert, then sure. You can wait for us outside."
Boutique? Us? "I thought I made it clear that I'm not going in there."
"Uh, yes you are," she smirked at me, "what are you gonna wear now that winter's approaching?"
"Kai's hoodies."
"I'm gonna need those," both her and Kai said.
"Fine. I'll return to Stiix in a few days anyways. It's always cold in Stiix, so I have some clothes there."
"It's chilly in Stiix. You haven't experienced Ninjago City's cold."
"She's right, you know," Jay pointed out, taking a sip from his water. "Besides, I'll be right outside the shop if you need me."
Skylor rolled her eyes. "Calm down, Mr boyfriend-material. Next thing you know you'll be rating outfits outside the dressing room."
"But I like shopping," he said with an innocent smile. "And I have a better sense of style than Kai—" he said way too quickly for anyone but me to understand. I couldn't help but laugh.
"We'll see about that, Walker," Kai shot back, standing up from his seat. "I'm gonna go ahead and pay. With style."
"My restaurant, my treat," Skylor stopped him, "unless you want me to call old daddy back in for business."
I was just...confused, really. Who the heck was...old daddy? Was it our dad? No, he's been dead for years now. Who in the FSM's name is he?
"He's in jail," Jay whispered over to me. "Y'know, harassment and stuff."
Huh. I guess one person knows what I'm thinking over here. So if that guy was called daddy by Skylor, it's probably her dad.
Oh, wait! It's the creepy dude! Okay, yeah, now it's finally clicked. Then again, I shouldn't be cheering for remembering that pervert.
"I've already paid," Skylor finally told him, dragging us all out of the shop.
After a few more arguments with Kai, she was the one to finally lead us to the boutique, much to my dismay.
Great. The creepy mannequins outside were wearing tuxes and dresses. Just my luck, as always.
"I could use a new pair of socks," Kai shrugged, heading inside. "They get lost in the washing machine easily."
He had a point there, not gonna lie.
Jay had already left me behind—as expected—and was waiting for his turn to buy cotton candy behind five other kids. I know it sounded mean, but it was kind of funny to see his face slowly lose hope as more of the pink cotton candy was being eaten by the kids in front of him. Poor little guy.
"So, what do you want to buy? I've got a big fat check right over here just for you," Skylor told me, waving the paper in front of my face.
How do I out this nicely...
I don't want you spending money on me because I'm already a burden just by living here. "Keep your money."
Crap.
"It's either that or I pick the outfits for you."
I sighed, pouting my lip. "Fine. What do I need to buy?"
Before Skylor could answer, her voice trailed off as she slapped her forehead.
"Hey guys!"
Lo and behold, Jay Walker himself was munching on probably the biggest pink cotton candy I had ever seen.
"The candy man got tired of the kids and gave the rest to me. Isn't that awesome?" he said, taking one big bite out of the sugary cloud that just barely covered his entire head.
"Ignore him, what do you want to buy?"
It's not such a tough choice, now that I think about it.
"Anything loose with long sleeves?" I shrugged.
"So basically Jay's clothes but in red?"
"Hey, I wear short sleeves!" he argued back, taking off his blue jacket to reveal the rather tight, white T-shirt underneath it. That's the one thing I remember about him; he treasures his clothes like crazy. I bet that's the same shirt he bought like two years ago.
To be fair, it's not like he hasn't aged since then. Well, physically, at least. And looking at him now, he has gotten a lot...stronger than I remembered him to be—
Oh, shut up, Nya.
"Okay, nope, too cold," he trembled, quickly putting the jacket back on.
I cleared my throat, trying to change the topic a little. "So, Skylor, you were saying..."
"Oh, right. So you basically want Jay's clothes but red?"
"Yeah, but blue is her favourite colour, so ha!" Jay argued back like a child. It's no wonder Kai hasn't joined our...conversation yet. I'm dealing with toddlers.
"Oh, come on, look at her! She would never look good in blue!" she pointed at me, attracting even the employees' attention.
Great.
She did have a point, though. "Skylor's right. I don't think blue suits me."
Was that a strange metaphor? Cause whatever it was, it upset Jay. A lot.
He frowned. "I think you'd look good in blue..."
"Yeah, well, you've been wearing the same jeans for three years," Skylor argued back to him, taking my arm. "Now, if you'll excuse us, I'll be getting her something that isn't gonna end up in your parents' junkyard."
Skylor dragged me away, but I had no power to say anything. I was too focused on my thoughts.
His parents, huh? I had stayed the night there once. They were liked second family to me, really. I remember one time I was having a bad day and his mom...Edna, I think her name was (then again, it might be something like Eda?), made me cookies and milk.
They were both amazing people from what I remember. I wonder what they're up to now?
I guess I'll never know.
