13. Old habits die hard

•"Who are you?"
"Angel to some. Demon to others"

~Paige~

I woke up a little late and decided to have breakfast in bed; I didn't feel like going downstairs so I called Jane to make a mini-breakfast and bring it to my room.

Just then, I was greeted by a rich, invigorating aroma of coffee and the freshly baked bread. Everything looked so delicious- from the hot maple syrup poured over the pancakes to the freshly squeezed orange juice and the mouthwatering strawberries and blueberries. I quickly finished my breakfast, because I had something in mind.

Today is a Dylan free day.

Dylan had been calling me since I left yesterday and I haven't  been answering.

I sat in bed listening to music.
I then decided to take a long bubble bath to relax.

I went downstairs to get some chocolate dipped strawberries, marshmallows and chocolate syrup.
It had been a long time, I thought as I made myself a strawberry smoothie and added some tequila and a few pieces of strawberry. The smell reminded me of old high school days when Chloé and I would hang out after school and make smoothies.
After I was done with everyrhing, I went back upstairs and got out a few candles.

I picked out navy green loose pants with a white V neck satin shirt and headed into the bathroom.

I turned on the hot water tap in the jacuzzi and added the bath salts and essences that I got over the summer and the strawberry bath bomb. I lit up a few candles around the jacuzzi and then got in.

I picked up my phone to check the number of missed calls I'd gotten from Dylan -32 missed calls.
I dropped back my phone and relaxed in the hot tub.

Ah Dylan, Dylan, Dylan.
I sat there for almost three hours, eating the strawberries, drinking and taking a break from all the stress I'd been through these few days.

I got out and dried myself up.
I then wore my clothes and brushed my teeth.

As I opened my room's door, I froze.

He stood right there in front of me, holding red roses and a black box with gold linings and writings. I was not sure what exactly it was.

He was wearing a navy blue satin suit that fitted perfectly. He looked gorgeous as always, but today was not the right day to be admiring his extraordinary beauty. Today was the day I ignore him and hurt him.

He didn't say anything, he just opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but didn't.

Oh no darling, I'm not speaking first.

I turned my face and walked next to him ignoring him.
I then brushed my hair and continued as if he wasn't there.
Of course it wasn't easy doing that.
I knew I was hurting  him, but I had to.

"Paige," he murmured softly.

I inhaled deeply and shook my head, still brushing my hair.

Hold it Paige! My inner self encouraged.

"Please," he said a little lower and softer if that was possible.

"What! Do you want to try to kiss me again? Do you want to whisper in my ear seductively? Do you want to hurt me again? Wasn't  yesterday  enough?!" I said sharply.

He didn't say anything; he just looked at the ground and scratched his neck as I spoke.

"What else is there? Eh Dylan tell me!" I demanded.

He paused and then said, "I'm  not going to say sorry because I know sorry means nothing, but please...hear me out and then I-I'll leave," his voice soothing.

He looked so tired. His eyes looked tired like he didn't have enough sleep. He had weary eyes with bags underneath them. His hair was ruffled and looked so rough from the times he had run his hand through it from frustration.

I nodded and sat on the bed.

"Sometimes good people make bad choices. It doesn't mean they're bad It just simply means they're human. I know I messed up yesterday, but  please be patient with me. Sometimes there are no words for my actions. Sometimes I don't understand. I know yesterday was too extreme, I know. Maybe I'm the worst person in the universe, but I always try my best...for you," he said softly looking at the ground. He looked so sad and hurt and I felt my heart drop when I looked at him.

"I'm just scared as you are. All these emotions, all these weird feelings I get are still foreign to me," he said as he dropped the flowers and the black rectangular box.
"And no don't stay away from me, because when I'm with you I don't care about  anything. You make me happy. You're pulling me out from the dark. Please don't let me go. Let's try one more time. Please be patient with me Paige." His jaw tightened and his expression dulled.

I didn't say a word; I looked at him, my heart in pieces. I couldn't see him like this way- hurt and sad.
It took every will power in me to stop me from getting up and running to him to give a hug- just a deep long hug.

I looked at him and watched him turn to look at me one more time before walking out of the room.

I picked the flowers and smiled.

The box was from Ladurée.
He got me macarons from my favourite place in Paris. I smiled as I picked out the red macaroon and ate it- my favourite.

I sat there recalling what he had said 'I always try my best for you'. My stomach fluttered as I recalled the memory.

For me.
Oh Dylan.
Shut up Paige and stop acting like a teenage girl.
I am a grown up independent woman that doesn't need a guy to satisfy me, but a woman a guy needs.
My inner self disapproved of what I felt towards Dylan.

I got up and immediately threw the flowers in the bin.

I closed the Ladurée box and left it on my bed as I left my room and went downstairs.

My mom was redecorating the garden; she was having a dinner in the garden after a week or so.
I went to help her with picking out the table arrangements, type of cutlery and other stuff. We were going to pick the catering after a few days.

"So what did he want to say?" Mom asked casually.

"You let him in didn't you?" I said raising my eyebrows, trying not to smile.

"...Maybe," she muttered before she started humming.

"Go!" she then said out of the blues

I thought about it for a few seconds.
Should  I?
No no.

"Not today, a few days more, I want to torture him a little bit...though I'm getting bored," I said.

"Since when did Paige Williams get bored!?" Mom said laughing out  loud.

"I'm inviting  him to the dinner by the way," she continued.

"Why?" I asked abruptly.

"His name is already written on the guest list," Mom said winking, handing me the scissors.

My phone then rang while I was helping my mother.

I looked at my phone and dropped everything to pick it up.

"Hi Kendall!" I said happily.

Kendall would be a great distraction.

"Want to do something?" I asked.

"Yeah that's why I was calling," he answered.

"What do you have in mind?" I asked.

"Depends on your mood," he said, laughing.

He knew me too well.

"Well I'm not sure how I'm feeling. So we'll just go with the flow, pick something, something exciting, just like old times," I said smiling.

"Alright, I'll pick you up after an hour," he said closing the line.

•••

"Where to?" I asked curiously as I got into the car.

"You'll  see," he said smirking, keeping his eyes on the road.

"Oh Kendall! I've  missed you so much. I'm  glad you're back into my life," I said honestly.

"Me too, Paige," he said averting his eyes from the road.

"Eyes back on the road, I want to live long!" I ordered.

"You haven't changed," he said laughing.

We chatted in the car about old times and how fun they were.

"We're here!" Kendall said, stopping the car.

We were in a race track. The area was very big. I got down from the car, following Kendall. It was so quiet that I could hear my voice echo and the rustling of the leaves as the wind blew.

"What's this?" I asked.

"They'll be here in five," he said looking at his phone.

Exactly five minutes later, I saw several cars coming and parking- a
red Porche, yellow Lamborghini, black Mercedes, blue BMW and a white Ferrari.

"Oh my God, we're going to race! Yaay!" I said excitedly, clapping my hands.

This was perfect- dangerous and exciting.

Kendall smiled and introduced me to his friends.
They were all friendly, both girls and guys.

"You should have told me, I would have brought my car," I said, watching the remarkable race going on.

It was a race between Jenna, the bad girl with a really sexy, short hairstyle in the red Porsche and Jeremy who used the yellow Lamborghini. Her black curled hair was short and shaved on one side. Not everyone could pull off such a hairstyle but she did perfectly.

"It's okay, you'll use mine," Kendall said handing me the keys.

Kendall's car was almost as sexy as he is. Yes, a car can be sexy.

It was shiny black with red lights and a red leather interior. It had a K.M written with style in italics on the plate number.

"You're up!" Jenna said to me.
I was racing against Lara, a wild adventurous yet sweet girl. She used the BMW while I used Kendall's black Ferrari with red leather furniture. It was shiny black, unlike Dylan's Audi. Dylan's car is matte black, definitely nicer.

...Paige?
Yes?
Why the hell are you comparing Kendall's car with Dylan's? Scratch that. Why are you even thinking of Dylan?!
I'm  not thinking of him, I'm talking about cars!

Slamming over the gas, the engine roared, making the car propel forward at its maximum speed.
The first minute of the race started by Lara being ahead of me.

I stepped on the pedal at it's maximum and took a deep breath, keeping my grip on the stirring wheel.
I overtook Lara's car and continued straight going left and right, preventing her from overtaking me.

Suddenly, I realized that I was no longer driving the car consciously. I was driving it by a kind of instinct. I was in a different dimension.
When racing you'd go through different emotions throughout the race.

I could feel the blood rush and my heart thumping inside. I kept my eyes on the road, trying my best not to lose control.

When I was a teenager I'd  sneak out with Kendall to race with him. I'd sit next to him and he'd  drive, he would say to me, 'while racing you should have great anticipation, coordination and reflex'.

The road was straight and didn't  have steep or strong turns so it wasn't too dangerous or difficult to control the car while turning.
I continued straight and reached the finish line. I then drift and stop.

"Woah, almost forgot how good you were," Kendall said hugging me and carrying me off the ground as we came down the car.

"You should join in the race, it's 2 months later," Lara suggested.

Kendall looked at me and nodded in approval.

"Yeah why not?" I said smiling.

"We'll practice together," Kendall said smirking at me.

Kendall was the best racer between all of us, always have been, always will be.

•••

Kendall dropped me home after we had dinner together.
I sat in my room looking at our yearbook photos, recalling our past memories.
We had the time of our life.
I was glad we reunited; Kendall was the best guy any girl can ask for.

As I was about to put back the year book, something caught my attention.

The red roses.
I went towards the trash can and picked them up.

Why didn't Jane throw them? I knew exactly why. Jane and my mother both wanted to make me feel bad.

I smiled as I inhaled the scent of the flowers.

Oh Dylan.
Stop smiling Paige!
Throw them back in Paige.

I ignored my inner self and brought a vase to put the flowers in. I added water and dropped the vase on the table next to my bed.
Picking up my phone to call Dylan,
I clicked on his name and hesitated to call.
I changed my mind so I dropped back the phone and went to bed.

Oh Dylan.
I hate your effect on me.

Oh Dylan❤❤ Aren't you already in love with Dylan?

Is Kendall going to keep Paige away from our Dylan?

Chapter 14 comes up on Wednesday. keep up❤💋
