10. Rooftops
°It's hard to wait around for something you know might never happen, but even harder to give up when you know it's everything you want ▫
~Paige~
"Well, well. Look at what we have here," a deep voice said from behind.
...A familiar voice infact.
I turned and froze when I saw the guy who was sitting next to me right in front of me in the ladies restroom.
I faked a smile and continued what I was doing, acting not bothered or scared.
He locked the door and was getting closer and closer.
My heart was beating really fast.
"How do you know Dylan?" he casually asked.
"That's none of your business," I answered him.
"Feisty. Dylan likes them this way."
I rolled my eyes at his statement. I could feel my phone vibrate, signalling me that Chloé had answered the phone.
"It's sexy and turns people on," he slurred as he gave a disgusting smirk and walked towards me, his footsteps echoing.
I tried to back away slowly, but he got closer, faster.
"I'll satisfy you baby. What are you doing with Dylan?" he purred, his voice dripping with venom.
"I'm n-n."
Before I could finish, he pinned me to the wall and the phone slipped from my hand.
Oh my God.
I tried to scream, but he covered my mouth and said, "Now if you scream, you'll just make the process faster and no one is going to hear you," he said as he kissed my neck.
I kicked him, but that only tightened his grip on me. I bit his hand really hard, making him wince and release me.
"Bitch."
I bent down and grasped the phone. Bringing it to my ear, I heard Chloé's worried voice. Without concentrating on what Chloé was saying I stuttered, "c-chloé."
"Are you okay?" she asked as she finally realised.
I shook my head, unconsciously even though she won't see me, but the words just wouldn't come out.
He stood up and hurried towards me. "No," I managed to say before he snatched the phone from me and threw it away.
Tears started flowing from my eyes, down my cheeks.
I couldn't handle all this. Millions of thoughts rushed and images flashed, making me shake in terror.
"I like this shirt on you," he whispered as he traced the length of my arm slowly, giving me the chills.
I gulped, holding my breath hoping he won't take it further.
"Be a good girl," he continued.
"Please don't!" I pleaded.
"No, don't beg. You'll enjoy it. You'll see what I'm talking about," he said, moving my hair onto one side, slowly.
I pushed him but that only increased his grip on me.
I was helpless.
I couldn't do anything.
I felt so useless.
°And now
Dylan's pov💊
Those people are boring as fůck.
Where's Paige by the way? Girls and their bathroom adventures, I thought to myself.
An unknown number was calling. I didn't want to pick up, but I felt it was something important so I answered.
"Yes-"
"Paige, where's Paige?!" she blurted out.
"What?"
And then realization hit me.
I dropped the fork and stood up immediately, leaving the phone as I ran towards the toilet.
There was a ringing in my ears as I felt blood rush through my head.
Shit, locked.
I couldn't let anything happen to her.
She had to be okay. She should be, I kept on repeating. I shouted at the employees to bring something so they could break down the door.
I had to save her. I couldn't handle anything happening to her.
I broke down the door before the workers and managers managed to.
I saw her pinned on the wall, her face covered in tears, looking so helpless.
And that was it. I pushed him off her and grabbed his collar.
"What. The. Fůck!?"
"Dude, she-"
There was a satisfying crunch as my fist hit his face, making him stumble back, tripping on his feet.
I held him back up and hit him one more time on his face, making blood drip on his white teeth.
People shouted, watched, and mumbled several things, but I didn't care.
I could hear people say "Is that Dylan Sparks?" surprise filling their voices.
He hurt my girl and he was going to pay.
My girl?
What the hell Dylan?
Paige.
She wasn't my girl...we were just friends.
He was on the ground, his nose bleeding and his eyes nearly closed.
I pulled him by the collar of his shirt and shoved him against the wall. I still wasn't done with him.
I held his face squeezing it. "If you ever touch her or even say her name, I'll fůcking kill you! Understood?"
I heard voices around me but I ignored all of them. I didn't care about anything. This guy tried to hurt Paige and I shouldn't let him go just like that.
I shook him harder."Do you fůcking understand?" I said as I hit his face again, letting him fall.
I stiffened when I turned and saw Paige approaching me.
I'm so sorry Paige.
"Dylan," she said calmly as I came close to her.
I pulled her close and hugged her tight.
I didn't know what I would've done if something would've happened to her. I tried to carry her to take her to the car, but she insisted that she was okay. I still carried her anyways.
I didn't start the car because I couldn't concentrate, I couldn't say anything to her so we sat there in silence.
I dragged her into this.
It was all my fault.
I'm no good for her.
"I'm sorry," I muttered almost unheard, unable to look her straight in the eyes.
I couldn't look at her; it was all my fault.
"It's not your fault," she said wiping her face with tissue paper.
"I'm sorry Paige...I shouldn't have brought you with me. This was all my fault. I'm sorry," I said, still unable to face her, clutching the steering wheel.
"I'm right here," she reassured me, her voice soothing. "Nothing happened to me. You stopped it," she smiled as she held my hand.
I stiffened when she did that and turned to face her.
But what if I couldn't. I cringed at the thought.
"I don't want to go home now. Can we go somewhere quiet?" she said as she smiled.
I nodded as I gave a half smile. I knew the right place to take her to.
●●●
"Oh my God. Dylan, it's amazing," she said as she smiled.
One beautiful and heart warming smile. I had never seen such a perfect smile.
Hasn't anyone fallen in love with her? I wonder.
We went to the rooftop garden showcasing the tallest buildings of New York.
Just this view was enough to make anyone relax- so comforting. I had designed the rooftop with trees and flowers to escape the urban surroundings and add more colors to the environment.
When I was young, my mom drew this building and kept it in her portfolio and said to me, "Dylan. One day, we'll build this building. It'll be our secret."
She would smile at me, looking really pretty and happy.
My mother was everything to me, she was the only person I'd listen to, the only person that could change my mood.
And I couldn't save her.
I couldn't help her survive, I watched her die and leave me all alone in this world that only promised pain and suffering.
After she left, I never saw the world the same. I never appreciated anything, because the only thing I appreciated, I lost.
Life wasn't fair- it never was and never will be.
She stared at the view and kept on smiling at me.
"This is...breathtaking," she said smiling, showing off her white perfect teeth.
Her smile was so perfect. It reminded me of someone -my mother's. It was just like hers.
My mom's smile could immediately change my mood. Whether I was feeling sad or angry, I instantly became happy.
This is the effect Paige's smile had on me.
She sat on the ground, leaning on the glass handrail.
"How did you know?"
"Know what?" I asked confused.
There was no particular expression on her face. I didn't know if it was fear, sadness, hurt, or even anger.
"That I was..," she muttered.
"Chloé called me," I said as I bent down and sat next to her.
I was sitting on the ground in a suit.
Dylan Sparks, suit and ground.
My first.
"Oh!" she muttered and smiled innocently tugging a hair strand behind her ear.
This was the first time in a month that I sat down and studied her face.
The sun made her dark brown hair glimmer. Very few strands were shining gold, that were only visible under the sunlight.
She then looked at me and for the first time, the full impact of her beauty hit me.
Her hair moved with the wind and it was the first time I noticed how soft and silky it was.
I had never paid attention to such things but I was enjoying this, even though I felt bad that it wasn't the right time.
She had hazel, luminous, gorgeous eyes that could affect me no matter what was going on. A light shade of green in her eyes that was only visible under the sun, made them much more gorgeous in a magical way. There was something about her eyes that I couldn't stop staring at them.
She had managed to turn my life upside down in a month.
I'd missed a few meetings just to hang out with her. I'd never skipped any.
She brought colour to my dull life.
She made me smile, open up and think of life differently.
She even made me want to feel that spark, love and be loved. But there are things in life that shouldn't happen, because they might bring pain, suffering, problems and darkness and could make me weak.
I might even mess it up and lose her for good and I was not ready for that.
Why would she want to be a part of this life?
...My life.
"Is that blood!?" she exclaimed worryingly, her eyes looking with worry at my injured hand.
I wondered whether she was worried about me, whether she cared about me. I just looked at her face as she looked at me with concern in her eyes.
"Oh it's nothing. Don't worry," I echoed.
She then looked up and then looked at me, her eyes shining in the sun.
"No, let's go home. We need to get you checked. Get up!" she said as she got up.
And she was back.
"I want to drive!" she said grinning as she turned to look at me.
"I don't th-"
She cut me off immediately and said, "notice how my voice didn't go up at the end? Not a question."
You and your smart mouth.
"Just today!" I murmured giving her the keys.
I wanted to see her drive my car.
No one has ever driven my car, let alone a girl.
What are you doing to me Paige?
She seemed so comfortable, driving my car. I enjoyed watching her drive. Each time she'd press harder on the pedal, making the car go faster. I'd tell her to slow down in a serious tone before laughing.
As we arrived, we stepped into the elevator to get to her house.
The elevator opened to her stylish- modern house.
I could hear Chloé's voice, but she was speaking to another person whose voice I had never heard before.
The voice seemed like that of an older woman, not a girl in her twenties.
"Mom," Paige said in excitement.
"I totally forgot," she whispered to me and went over to hug her mother.
Her mother hugged her back and then beamed at me with a full smile.
Paige looked so much like her mother with the same hair, eye colour and elegant style.
She was impeccably attired in a camel-coloured fine dress with matching shoes.
She looked groomed, elegant and beautiful, just like Paige.
"Mom, this is Dylan Sparks. Dylan, this is Grace Williams," Paige said introducing us.
I held out my hand and smiled.
I was relieved that the blood was on my left hand, it would have been weird for her to see her daughter hanging out with someone who had fresh wounds and blood.
If I wasn't mistaken, there was wonder and maybe stunned relief in her voice with a warm glow in her dark eyes.
"Dylan hi," Chloé said with worry in her voice.
"Chloé," I said nodding my head to tell her everything was alright.
She smiled and I could see relief in her smile.
