"So, how are you?" Joe asked, setting a mug of hot coffee in front of Bethany before sitting opposite her at his small dining table.
"Pretty good. I miss Seb and I'm very seriously considering quitting my job." She took a sip of her coffee.
"How come?" Joe asked, pushing his glasses up.
"It's a terrible environment and other than the woman who's desk is closest to mine I don't like anyone there and for what I'm being paid it just doesn't feel worth it. I'm sending out resumes and everything."
"That sucks." He agreed. "Where are you thinking of applying?"
"Well, other than my boss I actually really enjoy being a receptionist," she said, "so I'm looking at positions like that. I'm trying to avoid waitressing because the one summer I did that was enough to know I never want to do it again." Joe laughed.
"Yeah, customer service stuff sucks." Bethany sighed and sat back in her chair so she could put her feet up in the one diagonal to her.
"Honestly I'd love if my music could be full time, but BBM is kinda done, I think. Emmett bailed for understandable reasons, but no one else wants to sing."
"You could sing." Joe took a drink of his coffee and stood up. "I'm gonna have a piece of banana bread, want one?"
"Sure. Thanks." Bethany replied, "I mean, I guess, I could be the singer, but then who'd play the drums? And I love the drums a lot. I don't really wanna give that up. Not after all the time I put into learning them."
"That's fair." Joe offered her a piece of banana bread before sitting down again.
"Alright, enough about me. How are you? How's Karina?"
"I'm good. She's good. We're good. Really good actually. I'm thinking about asking her to move in with me."
"Really?! That's great!"
"Yeah, yeah." Bethany spent most of the afternoon at Joe's before going home.

"Hello?" Andy answered the phone.
"Hey, Andy, it's Sebastian. Have you heard from Bethany recently?"
"No. . . Why?"
"She's not answering her phone and I'm worried. And no, before you ask, we didn't have a fight. I don't know why she would be ignoring me." Sebastian sounded distraught. "She hasn't answered me since yesterday afternoon."
"Shit." Andy muttered. "Alright. I'm gonna go check on her." And without another word hung up on Sebastian.

———
Andy broke the speed limit and yelled at people several times on his trip to Sebastian and Bethany's apartment. There was no response when he knocked, but when he tried the door it wasn't locked.
"Peanut?" The apartment was a mess. There dishes all over the kitchen, laundry piled on the couch and in general very cluttered. "Peanut, you home?"
"'M in here." She finally responded. He made his way into the bedroom and found Bethany propped on the bed. Her hair was a rats nest and her face was red and blotchy.
"Hey. You look awful." Bethany didn't respond. "Are you alright? Sebastian's worried about you. Says you haven't answered your phone since yesterday afternoon."
"Well I've been in agony off and on since yesterday afternoon. It kept me up all night. I'm nauseous so I haven't taken anything for pain. And my phone fell behind the bed and I feel way too awful to get down there and find it."
"Do you want me to take you to the ER?" Bethany started to cry. "Peanut, you can't stay like this."
"No. But yes." She carefully pulled the blankets off and slid out of bed.

———
The trip to the ER went about the same as Andy's trip to Bethany's place. There were only a couple other people in the waiting room and when Bethany doubled over in pain while trying to fill out paper work it almost no time before a nurse came and got her.
"So based on what you've described to me," the nurse was a woman, young, with dark eyes and blue hair, "I'd say there's a pretty good chance you have kidney stones, but we'll run some tests and find out for sure. So first thing I'll have you do is pee in a cup and then we'll get you some nausea meds and painkillers, mkay?" So Bethany peed in a cup, and then, after taking her shirt off and putting a hospital gown on, laid down and closed her eyes while the nurse took blood. That nurse left and another came to take her for a CT before the first nurse could come back to start an IV. The CT experience didn't last long and trek down the hall felt shorter, but that could've been because she was in the wheelchair. The first nurse was waiting for her when she got to her little curtained off room. The nurse got the IV started and gave her a dose of intravenous painkillers and nausea meds and almost immediately Bethany started to feel better. She was told the Doctor would be in when the results from the CT came in.
"Sebastian says hi. And he's sorry he can't be here right now." Andy said, from his seat in the corner.
"Tell him I miss him." Bethany said, scrutinizing the ceiling for lack of other things to do.
"Mom says she loves you and she hopes you feel better."
"I love her too. And I hope so too."
"Are you feeling any better?"
"Yeah. Y'know having an IV is such a weird feeling. It's so cold and I can feel up my whole arm." Being in the hospital took her back to the day of the accident. Laying in bed not unlike the one she was in right then, with David in the bed beside her. Unconscious, but alive. And then gone. "I miss David." She said.
"I miss him too." Andy replied. "I can't believe it's been thirteen years."
"It feels like a lifetime ago, but also like it was just yesterday." Bethany closed her eyes again. "Tell me a story about him?"
"Sure, yeah, did I ever tell you about the time we got lost in the woods and had to come up with lie because we knew we'd get in trouble if our parents found out we went in the woods?"
"I don't know. Tell me anyway." Andy smiled.
"So we stumbled into the house way after dinner, covered in mud and Mom asks where we'd been. Before I can say anything Dave starts spouting this completely bullshit story about how we walked a friend home and decided to hang out for a little bit and then-"
"Hello." The doctor was a middle aged man with dark hair and bright blue eyes.
"Hi."
"You have a kidney stone." He said. He ran through a bunch of information about kidney stones and what's good and what's bad. Hers was almost to her bladder which meant she probably wouldn't be in pain much longer. He gave her a prescription for something that pretty much just made her pee more, and sent her on her way.

———
"Well, I can safely say this is the worst pain I've ever experienced." Bethany said when they were back in the car on their way to her place. "Sorry, Peanut. Do you need anything before I take you home?"
"Um, no I don't think so. I'll find something to eat when I get home. Find my phone. Take a shower and then probably try to go to bed while I still feel good."
"I could make you something to eat or help you tidy up or whatever. If you want." Andy offered. Bethany smiled.
"Thanks, but I'll be fine. Really." Andy still looked uncertain, but didn't say anything else.

After making herself a cup of instant noodles Bethany found her phone and settled back in bed. When her phone had enough battery to wake up again she texted Sebastian.
