Chapter 4

"Professor Ursula!" Professor Finnelan called. Ursula was back in reality, but was still shaken up by what she'd just witnessed.

"Oh... yes ma'am!" Ursula said, turning to her.

"Were you ever going to look into what I'd asked you to earlier?" Finnelan asked.

"I-I'll do that now." Ursula said, and then walked away swiftly.

With a bell ringing, Akko, Xelia and Lotte were all together in the grassy fields of Luna Nova, sitting near the bridge.

Akko had her Shiny Chariot cards all laid out on the grass, but one card was missing.

The Shiny Rod was also laid out on the floor next to the cards.

They were all in silence, still a little shocked about what had just happened.

"So... that spell you did with the Shiny Rod sure was amazing, Xelia." Lotte said, the first to break the silence. "The Shiny Rod was able to be used by both of you."

"Yeah! Maybe it'll be your turn, Lotte! We could be The Three Witches of the Shiny Rod!" Akko said, holding the Shiny Rod high in the air. She set it back down. "At least, it could've been. But it still belongs to Shiny Chariot - it's rightfully hers. We're only keeping it safe until we can give it back to her."

Xelia cringed. She quickly changed it to a smile when Akko looked up.

"Anyway, maybe we should talk about the cards. Which one first?" Xelia asked.

"Maybe this one. It looks like a mushroom. Says it can rekindle romance." Lotte said, picking it up.

"This one is a unicorn! " Xelia said, holding it up to her face.

"An eternal holy creature, a protector of happiness." Akko said, looking at the grass.

"You memorized them?" Lotte asked.

"Well, yeah! I'm not sure about some of the pronunciations, but I've memorized them" Akko said.

Lotte picked up another card.

"I know this one! It's a magic butterfly!" She said.

"Papiliodia. A butterfly that can fly long distances. It hatches once every century, and is said to bring hope to anyone who gazes upon it." Akko said, smiling at the sky.

These were one of the few bittersweet moments with Akko. A time where she was calm and happy. Xelia loved these moments, and hated how it was so few and far-between.

Xelia loved Akko, yes, but sometimes she wished Akko wasn't so hyperactive all the time. She made sure to savor these moments.

Professor Ursula, Professor Finnelan and Professor Miranda Holbrooke (the Headmistress of Luna Nova) were all gathered in front of a tree with no leaves.

"It looks very unhealthy." Principal Holbrooke said.

"Professor Ursula - have you looked into what may have caused this yet?" Professor Finnelan asked.

"Yes - I have. It seems like if we just eliminate the cause of the problem, the symptoms are all temporary." Ursula explained.

"What could have caused it? Have you discovered anything else?" Headmistress Holbrooke asked.

"I still need a little more time to do some research." Ursula said.

"Report back as soon as possible." Finnelan said.

Diana, Barbara and Hannah came over.

Barbara and Hannah had both frowns.

Diana thought back to their argument a little bit earlier.

"Diana! Are you okay with what happened out there? She totally disrespected you!" Hannah said.

"She stood tall, and in the end she proved me wrong. I have respect for her." Diana said.

"What?! You respect her?! How can you respect her when she dared to talk back to you?!" Barbara asked.

"That is exactly the reason why I do respect her. She knew her answer was right and corrected me. Nobody ever seems to question my judgement, even though I am just a human being as is everyone else." Diana said. "Now, I overheard the professors saying something was wrong with the Jennifer Memorial Tree. I need to head there to help. I have a spell in mind."

"Diana, are you sure you should be doing that when that girl did that to you only a few minutes ago?!" Hannah asked, frowning.

Diana sighed. "Time waits for no one. And besides - getting embarrassed is no excuse to help something as sacred to Luna Nova as the Jennifer Memorial Tree. Now, I'm heading off. Are you coming?"

Hannah and Barbara looked at each other with frowns before hesitantly nodding their heads and hurrying after her.

Diana closed her eyes and sighed silently. No time to think about that now.

"Headmistress Holbrooke?" Diana called, stepping closer. "I can't believe the memorial tree has gotten this weak..."

"Yes, it's quite sad - but we can't ignore the fact that this tree is very old. It's possible that it could just be at the end of it's time here." Headmistress Holbrooke said.

The professors and headmistress walked away, leaving the three girls to frown at the big tree.

Barbara opened her mouth to say something, but Hannah shook her head and Barbara looked down at the floor.

"The Jennifer Memorial Tree - it's said to have inherited the will of the great witch Jennifer. It's sacred to Luna Nova." Diana explained.

The three girls placed stones around the tree in two rings.

"I just finished on this side." Barbara said.

"I'm going to try revitalization magic." Diana said, getting out her wand. "This spell will give the tree powerful nutrients that will give it new life. It's a secret technique handed down through my family for generations."

Diana's wand glowed.

"Ro Teri Ario!" Diana called, her magic seeping into the tree's roots. The bark grew more lively, the leaves returning to the branches.

The girls gasped.

"It seems all the nutrients have soaked in." Diana said triumphantly.

"You're so amazing!" Hannah said.

"Come on! Let's go tell the professors!" Barbara said, running with Hannah outside the greenhouse.

When they were gone, Diana noticed a glow coming from deep within the ground.

Professor Ursula was flipping through a book in the library, reading on the Jennifer Memorial Tree.

She gasped when she saw it. The answer.

"I knew it! This is definitely it!" She said with a smile. "How did I not notice this before? So then this... would be a very good omen."

"Four damage to Lotte's AT! And with that, I win the game! Yay! Nine in a row!" Akko said, holding her hands up in the air.

"Don't worry, I haven't quite gotten the ropes of the game yet. I'm no good with card games. Besides, Akko's a genuine pro at anything Shiny Chariot - trivia, this card game, and other things..." Xelia explained, putting a hand on Lotte's shoulder. She just laughed nervously.

"Let's play one more!" Akko said, rearranging the cards.

But then vines grew out of the ground in front of them and they all yelped.

"Hey - what the heck is this?!" Akko said, staring at it wide-eyed.

Lotte gasped. "Akko, look at that!" She said.

"It's coming from the greenhouse!" Xelia said, standing up. "We should check it out."

"Wait a minute - what's going on?" Diana said, watching as the tree sunk back to its weakened state from before.

Akko, Xelia and Lotte ran in, and gasped at the sight.

"Get away from here!" Diana said, noticing the others. Akko was holding the Shiny Rod.

"Diana?" She wondered. "Do you know why this is happening?"

"Akko!" Xelia said, pointing towards a spiky glowing oval with a star on it. It was attached to the vines and grew healthier as the tree grew weaker.

More of them popped up.

"What are these things?" Akko said.

"They look like Pewpi to me." Xelia said. Akko turned to her.

"Are you sure?"

"And they're not just ordinary ones." Xelia said.

"There were parasites in the roots. That has to be why the tree got so sick!" Diana said. "Then all my spell did was give nutrients to these vermin instead of the tree itself!"

Diana pulled out her wand, glaring at the parasites. "They have to be stopped! Murowa!"

A zap of magic at a parasite and it was black and wilted, smoking.

"Murowa! Murowa! Murowa!" Diana recited, destroying every parasite she could. Akko gasped.

"Hang on a sec... " Akko said, and then got in the way of a parasite.

"Muro-"

"Stop, Diana!" Akko said. "They might not be bad after all!"

"You're in the way, move!" Diana said.

"Make me!"

Diana growled and aimed her wand at a different parasite. "Murowa!"

Akko yelped and ran in front of it, getting hit by the blast and falling onto the ground, her cards falling onto the ground.

"Akko!" Xelia and Lotte said, and ran after her.

"I didn't mean to..." Diana said, coming with them to see Akko's pained face.

"She got hit pretty hard by that spell... She doesn't look good at all..." Xelia said.

"Papiliodia..." Akko groaned. "I think those things... are its Pewpi."

Diana was hit with the realization too.

Lotte picked up the card from the ground and showed it to Akko.

"Here." She said.

"This has to be what it is." Akko said, slowly regaining her strength. "The papiliodia hatches once  every century. And is said to give hope to anyone who gazes upon it!"

The Shiny Rod glowed. By now, Akko's strength had been completely recovered.

"I have an idea! Try casting the spell from this card!" Lotte said.

"The Papiliodia Spell?" Akko said. After a bit of thought, she nodded. She picekd up the Shiny Rod from the ground.

"Well, uh... Papilio Filia..." Akko started.

"It's Papilio Filia Nymphodia." Diana read.

"That's how you pronounce it?" Akko asked, and Diana nodded. Akko turned back to the Shiny Rod and took a deep breath.

"Thanks a lot."

Then, closing her eyes, she remembered the rush she felt when she cast a spell before in the Forbidden Forest of Arcturus. Then she opened them, ready to cast the spell.

"The magical butterfly, Papiliodia. Spread your wings and fly!" Akko said. The Shiny Rod glowed with even more magical energy. "Give us all hope!"

"Papilio Filia, Nymphodia!" Akko said, thrusting the Shiny Rod at the Jennifer Memorial Tree.

And with a bright flash of teal light, magic swept around the tree, restoring the pewpi.

Then they all hatched harmoniously, glowing golden magical butterflies. As the four girls gazed upon the papiliodia, as they had said, they brought hope to their hearts.

"The papiliodia lives undergound for one-hundred and twenty years, before becoming a butterfly. And once free from its cocoon, it takes flight." Professor Ursula read aloud to herself.

"Hey, what's that? Look out there!" A girl asked, pointing outside the library window that reached the floor.

The papiliodia flew through the skies, heading towards a high tower, glowing a bright teal color that matched magical energy's.

"The flutter of its golden wings, give hope to all who witness them." Professor Ursula mumbled to herself, finishing her read on the papiliodia.

Diana was by the Jennifer Memorial Tree, smiling as she saw the tree was healthy again, the sunlight from the setting sun giving the greenhouse a warm glow.

Hannah and Barbara returned with the professor and headmistress, panting but ecstatic.

"The Memorial Tree. It's back to its old self!" Headmistress Holbrooke said, smiling at Diana.

"It's because of the spell Diana used." Hannah said.

"Thank you, Ms. Cavendish." The headmistress said.

"That's kind of you - but it wasn't me who did this." Diana protested.

"There's no one else here who could've done this other than you." Professor Finnelan said.

"Well I-" Diana started, but then stopped herself. She sighed. "Please excuse me."

Then she started to walk away.

"What a humble girl. She is the pride of this school." Headmistress Holbrooke said.

And while Diana was walking back to Luna Nova, she looked up in the sky to see the papiliodia one last time.

And she smiled, seeing Akko and Xelia flying on a broom, Lotte flying on another. Akko waved towards her with a bright smile.
