Chapter 8 - "Pretty Good"
*Calum's POV*
Two days later, in the morning, the doctor and a nurse came into my room. The nurse took the tubes out of my body, and then the doctor spoke. He told me that he needed me to do a few simple tasks. First, he told me to get up, so I did. Then, he told me to walk to him, and once again, I did. He dropped his pen in front of me, and asked me if I could pick it up. I told him yes and did the thing I was told once more. He then told me to sit down, but keep the pen in my hand. I sat down, then he told me to get back up. When I got back up, he asked me to sign my name on the one line on a paper he had.
"And that signature means you can leave the hospital, Calum," he told me.
"Really?"
"As long as you can get up and move, you can leave, unless you think something else would be a concern."
"No, I'm pretty good."
"Well, that's good. We will get one of your friends to come and get you. We don't want you driving yet."
"No.. I don't want to go home. I'll stay here with my girlfriend."
"Oh, okay."
"But first, can I see my baby, in person?"
"Of course. Follow me."
I followed him, and he led me to the NICU. We walked around until we got to an incubator that had "Baby Hood" written on a paper next to it. She was so small and fragile. I couldn't believe how small she was.
"How much does she weigh?" I asked.
"About one pound, four ounces. She's gained two ounces in the past week. She's only a foot long.. She was eleven inches when she was born. She's a miracle baby."
"Oh my god... She's beautiful too."
"She is progressing, but that doesn't mean she'll make it. We are really surprised she's lived this long. Less than five percent of babies born at twenty-two weeks make it at least this far, and three percent of the babies live until they're at least six, but less than one percent of the babies live a full life. It's so sad."
"Do you think she'll make it?"
"There is a good chance she'll live longer, but I'm not promising she'll live past six years old.. I'm sorry. There is a slight chance she'll live a normal life, but she'll be smaller than the other kids her age if she does."
I didn't say anything to that. I couldn't believe my little girl might not even live until she was six. I couldn't believe what the doctor was telling me.
"But your little girl, well.. She's a fighter. She'll probably keep fighting. She's amazing, a miracle."
That was the best thing I could hear. That she was a fighter and that she would keep fighting. I wanted to hold her so bad, but I couldn't. The doctor then spoke again.
"We're going to do another test on her today to see how she's doing, how her heart is, if she's breathing right, if her body is accepting the food, and things like that."
"Speaking of, how is Kate doing on the antibiotics?"
"Uh, well, she isn't really accepting the antibiotics.. Her body is refusing to take them, just like the last ones. We have a few more to try and we will see how those work out."
"Oh okay.." I was then worried about Kate and our baby.. I didn't know what I'd do without either of them.. I knew I'd probably cry myself to sleep every night if I didn't have one of them, or especially if I didn't have both of them. I just wish we'd never have gone out to look at the scenery. That was horrible. It caused all of this. I wouldn't have been hurt, Kate wouldn't be hurt, and our baby wouldn't be here yet. She wouldn't be really small when she was born, either. Everything would've been okay. But that's not how things happened.. That's not how they were supposed to happen. They are supposed to happen a certain way, and if I lose one or both of them, I'll just have to accept it as life. Life throws stuff at us and sometimes we can't get out of the way in time, and it hits us right in the face. That's what was happening to me at that point in my life. Life was throwing different things at me, and I wasn't getting out of the way quick enough. My life at that time was just a target...
