Chapter 10
Mandy and I stood aside while we waited for Ryder to finish setting down our blanket and pillows on the lush grass. When he was satisfied, he gestured for us to sit and all three of us kicked off our shoes and got settled in. We weren't seated for two minutes before Mandy started pulling the snacks out of her bag and handing each of us our favourites.
Ryder chuckled, slinking his arm over my shoulder while ripping open his Skittles with his teeth, "You couldn't wait for the movie to start, huh?"
Mandy shrugged, digging into her M&Ms, "I'm hungry and clearly you are too, so shut it," She snapped and scooted her butt around, trying to get comfortable.
As the two of my friends bickered back and forth, I took the time to look around. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and a cool breeze took the edge off of the usually humid summer nights. They couldn't have picked a better evening for the movie night if they tried. As time went on, more and more people made themselves comfortable on the well manicured grass. Some families even occupied the picnic tables that were dotted around.
Another breeze swept through the park causing me to shiver and Ryder tightened his hold on me, "Are you okay?" He whispered, lips grazing my ear.
I nodded, turning my head to smile at him, "I guess shorts were a bad idea."
Ryder's eyes fell to the shorts in question then back up to mine, "On you? Shorts are always a good idea." He winked.
Mandy let out the most annoying noise as she shoved me, "I thought by now the two of you would have stopped with all of this flirting," She spoke, dumping more M&Ms into her mouth. She didn't even bother to look at us.
"If you want me to flirt with you, just say that. I have enough to go around."
I rolled my eyes and shoved Ryder in his side, "And here I was thinking we'd get married someday." I wiped fake tears from underneath my eyes, throwing in a sniffle for a little razzle dazzle. "I was so naive."
Mandy snorted, almost choking on her candy, "I heard his dick's little so I think you're better off marrying big."
Ryder chuckled, leaning his face into my hair, "You weren't saying that when I had you bent over your desk. I think your exact words were 'Take it easy Ry. I can't... I can't take it' or am I mistaken?"
Another snort, "I think you're mixing me up with one of your other conquests. I'd never let you come near me with that community stick."
My jaw went slack as I listened to the two of them hurl insults back and forth. I knew Ryder wasn't innocent but I didn't know just how much he got around. He was holding back on me. I shoved my elbow into his ribcage. He hissed in response, pulling his arm from around my shoulders to rub the sore spot.
He glared at me, gritting his teeth, "What was that for?"
"When were you going to tell me all of this?"
A guilty look flashed across his eyes as he rubbed the hair at his nape, "Never?"
I shook my head and scooted away from him, ripping open my sour Skittles and pouring a bunch into my mouth. My eyes watered ever so slightly at the onslaught of flavours that exploded in my mouth. Ryder reached out for me and I ducked out of his grasp, shoving his hand out of my way.
He bit his lip, resting a tentative hand on my knee, "Why are you so mad about this?" His eyes were concerned as his fingers brushed against my skin.
Mandy snorted beside us, her snack bag ruffling loudly, "Maybe she doesn't like the idea of her best friend being a manwhore?" She offered. "How'd you feel if she was sleeping with anyone with a dick, hm?"
"That's different. She's-"
Mandy cut him off with a wave of her hand, "She's what, Ry? It's literally the exact same thing but the two of you are switching roles."
Ryder groaned, lip finding its way between his teeth again, "Brit and I are totally different people. She doesn't do casual."
"Where'd you get that idea from?" Mandy stole the question straight out of my head. I raised an eyebrow as his eyes flitted between the two of us. "You aren't here all day every day. Most of the year you're away at uni with me. She could be doing anything and anyone and you'd never know."
Mandy was always ready to step in and fight my battles for me. That wasn't to say that I couldn't handle myself because I could and I did, many times. But, this wasn't one of those times.
Ryder's eyes settled on me, "Do you?"
"Maybe I do." I shrugged, looking everywhere but him. We both knew that wasn't true. I've barely ever gotten close. Ryder took my hand into his, giving it a squeeze.
"You're so full of shit." He laughed and I snatched my hand out of his. As sweet as he was, he was such an asshole sometimes.
I poured more skittles into my mouth, eyes snapping up to his, "Screw yourself."
"I'd rather screw you."
Mandy gagged beside us while I scrunched my nose, "With that community penis? No thanks." I then looked over to Mandy with a smile, "Thanks for the warning, babe."
Ryder chuckled and said nothing else as the movie began.
Halfway through the movie, my throat began to feel dry so I asked everyone what they wanted and side stepped the families and teens lounging on the grass as I made my way to the impromptu concession stand.
"I feel like I keep running into you," A deep voice spoke from behind me. I spun around, almost tripping on my feet in the process.
A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips as my head tilted back to get a good view of his face, "Maybe you're following me and trying to play it off."
"Nah, weird isn't really my thing. I'm more of a sexy, charming kind of guy."
I rolled my eyes with a laugh, "Wow, Devin, you're so humble."
He chuckled and nodded his head towards the stand. It was my turn to order.
"Humble, sexy and charming. How am I still single?"
After ordering, I turned back to him, "Hm, I wonder."
My drinks were handed to me and I stepped out of the line to let Derek order. He nodded his head to my drinks, "I was going to ask you to hang out with me and my friends but I guess you already have company."
I grinned. I wouldn't have taken him up on that offer even if I was alone. Derek was a nice guy but I got the sense that he wasn't really that interested in me as a person which was fine. Everyone had their preferences, I just preferred not to be another notch on his headboard.
"Yeah my friends are back from uni and I'm kind of letting their drinks get hot so I have to get going. It was nice seeing you."
Devin waved as I spun on my heels and left. When I finally got back to our spot, my friends looked like they were about to die.
"What took you so long?" Mandy demanded while snatching her bottle of lemonade from my hands.
I scoffed and handed Ryder his. At least one of my friends hand some sort of patience. I looked back at her, "Rude. Anyways, I was talking to a guy in the line."
Mandy perked up like a meerkat, "A guy? Who's this guy?" She started, her voice barely above a whisper and filled with excitement, "How old is he?"
"His name is Derek. He's eighteen and we go- well, went to highschool together and before you ask, no I'm not interested."
Her face fell and she poked my thigh, "Why not? It's been so long since you've been interested in someone."
Ryder snorted, "Put some respect on my name. Brit's hopelessly in love with me."
I narrowed my eyes at him, his blue ones sparkling in response, "After all that I've heard tonight? You've lost any chance of best friends with benefits. Maybe you'll have better luck with Mandy."
Mandy slapped her chest, trying to stop herself from choking on her drink, "No, thanks. I think I'll pass."
Ryder grumbled something to himself which sounded a lot like both of us would have been boring in bed anyway. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep the grin off my face while we enjoyed what little was left of the movie.
