A week ago Tate McRae had invited Kiana to a Halloween party she was attending. The two had gotten close after Tate was asked to be Kiana's opener for the Nothing's Forever tour in Europe. They hadn't hung out in person due to their busy schedules, so the Halloween party would be the first time they would see each other in person. Tate dressed as Jane Smith from 'Mr & Mrs Smith' and Kiana had gone the basic route and chosen a cowgirl as her Halloween costume.
The two friends met up at Tate's place and pregamed before heading over the the party. When they arrived Kiana went straight for the alcohol, and Tate followed.
โ
Kiana and Tate were playing beer pong and they each had one cup remaining. Tate tossed the ball at the cup, the ball circled the rim before falling into the beer. The crowd around Tate cheered and playfully pushed the younger of the two singers in celebration of her beer pong victory. Kiana threw down her cup and made direct eye contact with a woman who had just entered. Despite being slightly drunk, Kiana recognized the woman almost immediately, there wasn't anything in the world that would ever make her forget those brown eyes.
Kiana pushed through the crowd to get to Julien, but when she'd reached the other side of the room, she was gone. She spun around frantically in search of Julien as if her life depended on finding her. Kiana spotted the same yellow hoodie Julien wore being led over to the drinks area by someone in a black and white plaid shirt. Kiana ran to Julien and reached her before she could disappear again.
"Julien," Kiana called out. "Hey!"
When the two had turned, Kiana recognized the person Julien had come with; it was Lucy.
"Oh," Julien said awkwardly. "Kiana, hey" She glanced at Lucy and gave her a small nod, letting her know that she'd alright talking to Kiana.
"I'll leave you two alone, I'm gonna go get a drink"
"You look different. If I were someone else I wouldn't have recognized you" There was a soft chuckle that escaped Kiana to ease the tension. "Look um, can we talk, please?"
Normally Julien would want nothing more than to walk away from a conversation with Kiana, but after that night in Tennessee she wanted to know if Kiana was sober or not.
"Sure" She replied finally.
The two walked out the house and onto the front porch where they could talk without yelling over the music.
"I know that the last time we saw each other I wasn't... in my right state of mind"
"Right state of mind?!" Julien interrupted. "You overdosed, Kiana! You fucking died!"
"I know" Kiana sighed. "I know, I'm sorry"
"Are you clean?"
"What?" Kiana hadn't anticipated that question.
"Are you clean" Julien repeated. "Are you sober?" Kiana stayed silent, not wanting to give her an answer, although her silence was enough of a response for Julien. "As much as I hate you for what you did, that doesn't mean I want you doing god knows what kind of drugs"
"My life went to shit, nobody was there for me, and I know it's my fault but I just needed somebody" The only one that had been there for her was Jack, but Kiana felt as though he didn't count since Jack had to be around her to produce Kiana's songs. "Nobody deserves a second chance, but I keep getting them lately"
"You want to give us a second chance?" Julien motioned between her and Kiana.
"Not as girlfriends but as just friends"
"You know we can't Kiana" After the photos of her and Leah Ivanov were posted and incident in Nashville, Julien couldn't trust Kiana again.
But Juliens response seemed to fall upon deaf ears. "Just friends, okay? I can't stand not having you in my life, it's killing me" Kiana hadn't meant the expression in a literal sense, but that was the way it came across.
"Kiana, do you remember how you sang me one of your unreleased songs and you didn't finish it cause you broke down crying after the chorus?" She nodded and Julien sighed. "I was there for you while you were seeing another woman, but if you had told me everything instead of finding out through the paparazzi, things would've gone much differently"
"Differently how?" Kiana questioned.
"We might've had a shot at being friends. All I ever wanted was the truth, Kie, and you never gave that to me"
At that moment, Tate stumbled out onto the porch, quickly downing a shot of vodka. "Kie, come on! You're missing everything!" Her words were slightly slurred and she was swaying from side to side. Tate grabbed Kiana by the wrist and dragged her back inside.
โ
The next morning both Kiana and Tate were violently hungover, and none of them knew how they had gotten back to Kiana's apartment. The younger of the two had passed out on the floor beside the couch while Kiana had fallen asleep on the couch.
"Oh my fucking god" Tate groaned as she sat up. "Kie wake your ass up" She aggressively slapped Kiana's arm, earning a loud annoyed groan from the singer. "Stop being a whiny bitch, we're both busy today unfortunately"
"Alright, alright" Kiana wandered over to the kitchen and poured herself a shot of whiskey to prepare for the day. There was suddenly a rather aggressive knock at the door. "Tate!"
"Yup! I got it!" When Tate had opened the door she was a bit confused as to who it was. "Hello? Who are you?"
"I'm Marcus, Kiana's younger, and very annoyed, brother. Excuse me" He walked past Tate and into his sisters apartment calling out her name, or rather screaming it.
Marcus had found Kiana in her kitchen downing a second shot of whiskey. "Seriously?!"
"Relax, it's just to calm my nerves"
"What about last night, was that also to 'calm your nerves'?!"
"How the fuck do you know where I was last night?" She questioned, pouring herself a third shot.
"The fucking paparazzi, how else?!"
"That was a Halloween party Marcus, chill out" Says Kiana, downing the whiskey.
"What about Nashville? What the fuck was that?!"
"What happened in Nashville?" Tate asked, munching on a bag of chocolate chip cookies that had been lying around.
"Nothing happen- "
"Nothing?!" Marcus scoffed and turned towards Tate. "She overdosed after her show in Nashville. Kiana's an addict still going out to parties and getting drunk or high or both!"
"That's not for you to tell Marcus!" Kiana slammed the bottle of whiskey down on the counter, accidentally shattering it into a million little pieces. "Shit..."
"I'm just looking out for you, Kiana" He spoke softly. "I'm sorry but I love you and I don't want to see you dead"
"Okay, I think you better go Marcus" Tate pushed him towards and out the door.
Kiana sank to the floor, not caring about the broken glass around her, and brought her knees to her chest and broke down crying. She truly couldn't hate her brother any more than she did now, her drug problem wasn't for Marcus to share with whoever he pleased.
"Marcus is gone" Tate said. "I know it's not my place but... was what he said true? Are you an addict?"
Kiana looked up at her friend with tears in her eyes and nodded. "He doesn't get it"
"Okay, help me understand then" She kicked aside broke shards of glass and sat beside Kiana.
"A few months ago paparazzi caught me cheating on my girlfriend, and so my brother and my friends turned on me. So when some guy offered me drugs I took them, I just wanted to forget everything for a little but now I'm stuck with this fucking life"
"Marcus is an ass for just telling me like that, but he is right about you needing help"
Kiana shook her head. "I can do it myself, fuck rehab"
"But you- "
"Trust me, please"
No part of her trusted Kiana to get sober on her own, but she had just seen the older woman argue with her brother and figured Kiana wasn't up for another fight, and quite frankly neither was she. "Okay, but you have to promise me you'll get sober"
"I promise" Kiana never broke a promise in her life, but the one she had made with Tate was one she never intended to follow through with.
