Chapter 49: Blame
(Bella)
"Bella?" I heard a voice hovering over me in the darkness. I knew that voice! Help me! Help me! I opened my eyes and squinted at the light.
"Oh, my God, Bella! You're awake!" Namjoon exclaimed. He was standing next to me with a concerned look on his face.
I moved my arm gingerly. "Where...am I?" I blinked at the bright light.
"You're in the hospital," he replied. "Don't move. Just lie still. You're hooked up to a few machines here. I'm so glad to see you open your eyes. Let me go tell the nurses and your parents. Just a sec."
I watched him disappear out the door then my parents rushed in.
"Oh, my dear girl!" my mother cried. She held my hand tightly. "I'm so glad you woke up. We were so worried."
"Mom. Dad," I said softly.
My father looked at me. He was holding back tears. "Oh, my sweet girl." He patted my arm softly.
I tried to move, but my mom shook her head. "Don't move, Isabella. You need to stay calm. That nice boy is calling the nurse and doctor. He's a friend of yours?"
I nodded once. "Yes. Namjoon is a good friend. Where's...?" I was about to ask about Jin when the doctor walked in.
"Well, Miss Domani, it's good to see your eyes," he said. "I'm Dr. Morven. Let me just check your vitals. You were unconscious when you were brought in earlier in the morning, but you are looking much better." He shone a light in my eyes then checked my heartbeat. He fiddled with my IV line. "All you need now is a lot of rest so that you can recuperate."
I saw the relief in my parents' eyes and felt a bit of comfort myself, but I still didn't know exactly what had happened, so I asked the doctor.
He pursed his lips. "Someone used chloroform to render you unconscious, but it seems that it was not a dangerous dose. Still you probably won't have memory of that due to the effects of the chloroform. Then you were forced to ingest sleeping pills and alcohol. Do you remember that?"
I nodded. I remembered that girl and her hate-filled expression as she pinched my nose hard and forced the liquid down my throat.
The doctor continued. "Luckily, it seems that in that case as well, the amount of sleeping pills was not dangerous enough to have to pump your stomach. You probably felt some muscle weakness and some sleepiness, but you were not in any real danger from the pills. We're getting you hydrated. You should feel better soon." He glanced at my parents then back to me. "You were the victim of an assault, so the police are waiting outside to get your statement. You do not have to speak to them until you feel you are up to it."
I felt myself start to shiver.
The doctor noticed that my heart rate began to race. "Please, take a breath. You are safe now. Deep breaths." His voice was soothing, and soon my body began to relax again. "Whenever you're ready to speak to the police, just let us know. For now, just stay calm and rest." He nodded to my parents and left the room.
My mother again held my hand. Her eyes were watery.
"I'm okay," I said. "Don't worry. I think I want to talk to the police now."
My parents protested, but I explained that I didn't want to forget any detail that might be important in finding my attackers. My father agreed and went out to tell them I was ready.
A stocky, burly man in an old-fashioned suit walked in followed by a tall almost statuesque younger woman with beautiful dark skin. She spoke first. "Hello, Miss Domani. I am Detective Regina Allen, and this is my partner Detective Ray Stone. Thank you for agreeing to talk to us. You are very brave for doing so."
I nodded, feeling my mouth go dry. "Please call me Bella."
The woman smiled. "Okay, Bella. Do you mind if we pull up a chair so that I can take notes?" At my indication, she and the man sat down.
At that moment, Jin walked into the room. "Bella! I heard you...oh, sorry." He looked at the people surrounding me.
"Please stay," I said. I looked at the detectives. "I'd like for him to stay."
"It's better if he doesn't," Detective Stone said.
"Oh, this is her boyfriend," my mother said with a proud smile. "He was the one who found her, I was told." She looked adoringly at Jin. "Thank you so much, Seokjin. You are an angel."
A strange look passed between the detectives, then Detective Allen cleared her throat. "I'm sorry, but we'd prefer to speak to you alone, Bella. We've already spoken with Mr. Kim, and I think it's in your best interest to speak to us alone."
I looked at Jin. He pressed his lips together and looked down. "It's okay. I'll be outside." He glanced at my parents then ducked out of the room.
My parents also nodded and left reluctantly.
Detective Allen smiled at me. "It's best that interviews are conducted individually, Bella. It will help us piece everything together." She looked at the male detective as if asking for help.
"Miss Domani," he began. "Did you know the woman and man who abducted you from your apartment?"
I blinked a few times. "No. I've never seen them before. The woman came to my door and said something about...the costume contest, I think." I nodded. "Yes, she said that we--Jin and I--had not collected our prize, and she needed me to fill out some information. I asked her to come in and..." I furrowed my brow. "The next thing I remember is waking up in darkness outside."
The detective nodded as he jotted down in his notebook. He asked me if I remembered anything that these people said to me or to each other.
My hands began shaking violently as bits and pieces started coming back to me. "Oh, my God! She--that girl--said I was Seokjin's slut or something like that."
"Kim Seokjin? The man who was just here?" Detective Stone asked.
"Yes," I said. "After she made me drink alcohol, she told me that they were going to film me...with...that guy. Uh, they were going to show Seokjin. I think that's what she said. I don't remember everything. I was trying to get up, but I...I couldn't."
"No, you couldn't, and it wasn't your fault," the female detective said quickly. "Can you remember any other detail? Anything else she said?"
I took a deep breath to steady my nerves. "She wanted the guy to record us... together. She mentioned Seokjin, that she wanted him to like...it." I shook my head. "It's not completely clear."
"That's fine, Bella. Stay calm. Were you aware that the woman was once in a relationship with Mr. Kim?" she asked.
My eyes went wide, and the air left my lungs. "Wh-what? No! It's not true!"
Detective Stone sighed. "Yes. Mr. Kim confirmed it when we questioned him."
"Abigail?" I asked. I remembered the name of his horrible ex-girlfriend.
Detective Allen nodded. "Abigail Choi. She claims to be Mr. Kim's fiancée." She paused. "She claims she was doing it at his request."
"No," I croaked and closed my eyes. This was too much to believe.
