The walk home was annoying. A part of me missed the old days with Heaven. A part of me missed having company; having her go to my house everyday. I quickly shook the thought away, wiping sweat from my forehead. The heat was brutal, and no clouds had decided to cover the sun.
As soon as I walked inside, cool air greeting me, Mom asked me to do chores. I nearly rolled my eyes at her, but I knew she would just give me more to do. So, I got to work scrubbing the dishes filling the sink in our small apartment. I scrubbed and scrubbed until my dark hands appeared white due to the suds. All the while, I tried to think of the way I would get the money for the new dress I needed.
My phone rang, and I reluctantly wiped my hands before pulling it out of my pocket. The last caller ID I expected to see was Ever. I nearly groaned, then decided to answer it.
"What do you want?"
"Have you seen my sister?"
"Why would I want to?"
"I don't know. You guys were friends like a month ago," Ever retorted. "Was she at school?"
I thought back to my third period class. "No."
