Ever

I hated school. That's why I was extremely glad when it was released, and my best friend dropped me off. He waved goodbye as I stepped out of the car. I waved back, turning towards the house and pulling out my house keys. Mom was at work, and I hoped Heaven wasn't home yet.

Glancing at the driveway, I noticed Mom's old car was gone. Strange. I hoped she hadn't decided to use it along with her new one. I had worked hard to get that car. It had taken months of persuading her to buy a new one; months of sweet talking her.

After entering the house, I barely had time to take off my shoes before Mom began shouting.

"Ever! Did you take my car? Where on Earth were you?"

She continued shouting, and I held up my hands to calm her.
"No, momma. You're home from work early."

She placed her hands on her narrow hips, and her icy eyes, which I had inherited, narrowed. "If you didn't take my car, who did?"

I rolled my eyes, letting my sweet-talking act drop. "Who do you think? The rotten apple of this family."

Mom sighed, tucking a blonde strand behind her ear. "Don't talk about your sister like that. Try calling her."

I placed my hands on my hips."Why did you assume it was me?"

"Ever," she said pinching the bridge of her nose. "Just forget it."
