Chapter 12 - Part 1

17 days before Valentine’s Day.

Jason’s P.O.V

I didn’t actually head upstairs after I left the kitchen, leaving Avery with her eyes wide and mouth open after I lifted my shirt up. Instead I eavesdropped on Dylan and Avery’s conversation. I heard every word and the worry in Dylan’s voice when he asked her what she had said to me.

I walked out of the kitchen, smiling smugly after I saw Avery’s reaction when I lifted up my shirt.

“What are you smiling at?” Dylan questioned, narrowing his eyes at me from the top of the stairs and held a firm grip on the banister and the blanket wrapped around him.

I smirked, “Just been talking to Avery.” I shook my head slightly and chuckled, “Such an interesting conversation.” I paused and matched his blue gaze with mine.“That’s all.” I shrugged.

I watched as his jaw clenched and I smiled. He quickly shuffled down the stairs, bumping my shoulder as he dashed past me.

It’s so easy to get into his head. Especially when it comes to Avery.

I parked my car and jumped out of my Volvo, slinging my bag over my shoulder. I have to get ahead on this. Dylan is not going to steal another girl from me. Not this time. My hands ball into fists and my jaw clenches at the thought of Avery and Dylan together. I have to do something, and soon.

I strode through the mass of students in the hallway and quickly spotted Avery through the crowd. She was putting her books in her locker.

Perfect, I thought and quickly walked towards her.

She put her last textbook in her locker and I quickly shut it, making her jump. “Hey,” I said, leaning on her locker.

Avery’s eyebrows furrowed, “Hey,” she replied. “Are you in a bad mood?” she asked. “Or do you just go around slamming people’s lockers shut?” she shrugged.

“Didn’t you hear? I’m the official locker closer.” I joked and she tried to supress a grin.

“Funny,” She said, biting her lip to stop herself from smiling.

I folded my arms across my chest, “Go out with me tonight.” I blurted out.

Avery’s eyes widened, “W-what?” she stammered obviously taken aback by my question.

I shrugged, “You heard me. Are you doing anything tonight?” I asked, raising an eyebrow at her in question.

She shook her head and muttered, “No, but-” she started but I interrupted her.

“Then it’s a date. I’ll pick you up at six.” I said and walked away, disappearing into the crowd before she could reply.

I didn’t bother going to Calculus. Instead, I headed to the field and ran laps while deciding on the best way to tell Dylan. I smiled to myself knowing that he can’t do anything. He stayed at home because he’s sick, probably from sitting outside in the cold at the party we went to on Saturday.

He’s a selfish, cocky asshole who doesn’t deserve someone like Avery. She’s better off with me than him. She’s falling for him, I know it. But I can’t let that happen. Dylan doesn’t deserve her and she deserves someone better than some guy who doesn’t care about anyone but himself.

That was all I  could think of for the rest of the day. I couldn’t concentrate on anything else.

I unlocked the front door and ran upstairs to take a shower and get changed. By the time I finished it was 5:45. I headed down the hall and knocked on Dylan’s bedroom door.

“Come in,” he coughed.

I peeked inside and saw him in bed playing on his PS4. “I’m heading out. Don’t wait up for me.”

“Where are you going?” he questioned and furrowed his brows in curiousity.

“Avery and I are going out.” I shrugged.

I watched as his jaw clenched and his grip on the controller tightened and he accidentally unpaused his game. He cursed under his breath. “Where are you two going?” he asked through gritted teeth.

“Out.” I said. “I have to go, don’t wait up!” I told him, closing the door behind me.

I drove to Avery’s house and parked my car in her driveway before knocking on the door.

“Mrs. Green,” I smiled when Avery’s mum opened the door.

She smiled back, “Jason, come in.” She stepped aside and gestured for me to come inside and I thanked her. “Please call me Leila.” And I nodded. “Avery will be coming down soon. You know how girls are.”

I chuckled at her comment. “Thank you for letting me stay here over the weekend.”

“Oh, it’s alright.Your Aunt Andrea thought it was the best way to stop you boys from having any out of control house parties.” She joked.

“Hey,” Avery smiled as she walked down the stairs. “You haven’t been waiting long have you?”

I shook my head, “No, I just got here.”

“Good, should we go?” she asked and I nodded. Avery waved at her Mum as we left and she waved back.

We both piled into my Volvo, “Ready?” I asked as she put on her seat belt and started the car.

“Yeah, so where are we going?” she questioned, raising an eyebrow at me.

I smiled, “Wouldn’t you like to know. You’ll have to wait and see.” I paused. “Patience is key,” I kidded.

I glanced over at her and saw her roll her eyes. “Sorry, you didn’t really eleaborate on where we were going, you just asked me to go out, on might I add, a Monday.”

“So? Are there any rules saying people can’t go out on Monday nights?”

“No...”

“Exactly.”

“Will you at least tell me why we’re going out on a Monday?” she persisted.

I sighed, “because I wanted to take you out.”

We’ve been in the car for thirty minutes and Avery has asked every single question she could possibly ask to find out where we were headed. I finally pulled over and the car stopped to a halt.

Avery looked out the window, “Where are we?”

I stepped out the car, “You’ll see.” I told her and walked over to her side to open her door.

“Thanks.” She smiled and looked around only to see trees surrounding her. “We’re in the middle of nowhere. Are we lost? Tell me we’re not lost.” Her face was struck with panic.

“Relax, We’re not lost. I know where we are.” I assured her.

“And where exactly is here? A dark place surrounded by trees where we’ll get murdered by a serial killer?” she asked saracastically.

“No, just follow me.” I shook my head at her sarcasm and led her past the trees, moving a few branches out of the way. The sun was setting but there was still enough light for us to see where we were going.

She took one more look around, “Yeah, definitely a scene from a horror movie.”

We didn’t ahve to walk far until we reached a clearing in the woods and saw a huge field surrounding a lake. The sky was painted with red and oranges which reflected on the calm water making it shimmer.

“Oh my...” she gasped in disbelief.

“You’ve never been here before?” I asked and she shook her head no. “I didn’t think so. Not a lot of people come here or even know about it.”

“Maybe, nobody comes here because it’s surrounded by a creepy forest which looks like something out of a horror movie?” She joked.

I chuckled slightly, “Come on,” I said, and tilted my head in the direction of the lake.

“Where are we going now? Let me guess, the next surprise is  a door to Narnia.” She said mockingly before squinting her eyes, “Is that a table and chairs over there?” she pointed towards the distance.

“Unfortunately, no. There’s no magical door to Narnia. At least as far as I’m aware of.” I grinned. “And yes, those are a table and chairs. Are you hungry?”

She grinned back, “Starving.”
