Chapter 11 - Part 1

18 days before Valentine’s Day.

I rolled over onto my side, I hadn’t slept properly even though my brain screamed to get some rest. I noticed that Emma had disappeared and I wondered if I had overslept so I checked my new alarm clock seeing that I broke my last one. It read 6:03AM. Was she awake already?

I stumbled down the stairs and bumped right into Emma.

“Morning,” she whispered.

“Good morning to you too,” I whispered back. “Why are you awake so early?”

She shrugged, “I couldn’t sleep.”

“Me neither,” I replied and noticed that she wasn’t wearing her pyjamas. I raised an eyebrow at her. “Where are you going?”

“Out,” she said. “I thought I’d go out for a quick run while everyone was still sleeping.”

“Oh.” I asnwered. “What for?” I was curious, she never showed any interest in running. I think I distinctly remember her saying that she would never run, and if she did, then someone was chasing her.

Emma shrugged again, “Just to think and clear my head. Want to come?” she asked softly and I nodded.

“Five minutes,” I said and tip-toed up the stairs to get changed.

My feet thundered against the hard concrete and my muscles began to ache with each step. “It’s a bit cold this morning.” I panted trying to start a conversation.

“Yeah,” Emma gasped. “Can I ask you something?” she asked wearily.

“Sure.” Now this is interesting, I thought. Emma’s pace slowed and I started to jog with her.

“It’s just this has been bothering me and it’s...um...yeah.” She gasped and continued, “It’s actually why I’m trying to clear my head, it’s jut bothering me so much.”

“Okay. Is something wrong?” I asked in concern.

“No, it’s just...do you think Aaron likes me?” she blurted out and I gaped at  her for a second and she blushed.

“No, he clearly doesn’t,” I said sarcastically and chuckled. “Emma, it’s really obvious that he does.”

“Okay.” She sighed in relief. “I was just worried that, you know, he didn’t.”

I rolled my eyes, “He gave you a nickname after five minutes of talking to you and I didn’t get one. It’s quite clear who he likes.”

“That’s kind of true, I guess.” Emma stood still and I abruptly stopped when I realised that she had.

“What’s going on with you and Dylan?” she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

“Really, the eyebrow wiggle?” I rolled my eyes and she smirked. “Nothing. Nothing is going on.” I assured her.

“That’s not what it looked like to me,” Emma stepped closer to me and nudged my arm. “You know what I mean?” she said with a wink.

“No. Not at all.” I said with a impassive face.

“Don’t lie, you know exactly what I mean. So...” she paused. “What meant nothing?” she asked cocking her head sideways.

How did she- ? “Emma,” I warned. “Did you eavesdrop on us last night?” I narrowed my eyes.

She bit her lip, “A little. But I only heard that part. That’s why I’m asking. I want the whole story.”

“It’s nothing,” Then I broke into a run trying to get away from Emma. But she ran after me and grabbed my ponytail to hold me back.

“Nuh-uh, not so fast. Now spill it.” She demanded and grabbed my ponytail and yanked it.

“Ow!” I exclaimed. “Will you let go of my hair first?”

“No. Tell me first.” She insisted, pulling on my ponytail again and I winced.

I sighed in surrender. “So...I might of, kind of, kissed Dylan.” I muttered under my breath.

Emma suddenly let go of my hair, her hand dropping to her side. “What?”

“I kissed Dylan.” I mumbled again.

“What?!” Emma looked confused. Jeeze! Is she deaf or what?

“I kissed Dylan, okay?” I half-shouted and quickly shut my mouth closed and grit my teeth.

Emma’s hand dropped from my hair and she gaped at me before a wide grin made it’s way on her face, “Oh my God!” she squealed. “That’s great!” she cheered.

“Great? How is it great?” I was completely baffled by her reaction. What is wrong with this girl?

“Because, now I can say...” she paused, “wait, for it...” she said with a smile and I frowned. “I told you so!” she screamed in my ears.

“No, don’t ‘I told you so’ me. You never said that we would end up kissing, or technically, he kissed me.”

“Yeah, but I thought it.” She grinned. “And aww! He kissed you! That’s so cute!”

“Wow. Okay. As your best friend, I’m going to do you a favour.” Emma looked at me in confusion and I smacked her head.

“Ow! That hurt! What was that for?” She glared at me, her eyes darkening into a death glare.

“I’m your best friend. It’s my job to try to knock some sense into that head of yours. And as my best friend, you have to do the same if I ever become like a squealing and annoying retard. Which is what you’re doing right now.”

She narrowed her eyes and scowled. “Except I won't hit you on the head, I’ll just shoot you.” She said with an evil grin.

“That’s nice of you. That’ll be so much better. Thank you, Emma.”

“Whatever. So is he a good kisser?” she asked smiling.

“Emma!” I scolded then I started to jog again. “Come on, let’s just go back.”

“But I want to know!” She shouted after and ran to catch up.

I got home before Emma because I sprinted away from her and she couldn’t catch up. I closed the door softly behind me only to walk straight into Jason.

Why does that keep happening?

“Oh! Sorry,” I smiled sheepishly.

“It’s alright, I’m used to you walking into me.” He joked. “Where have you been?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Running, with Emma but she’s slow.”

He chuckled, “Want some breakfast? I made waffes.” He shrugged.

“Waffles?” I raised my eyebrows, “Only if you have chocolate syrup.”

He pretended to look insulted and gasped, “Of course, I do!” Jason exclaimed. “Who eats waffles without chocolate syrup?” he asked rheotorically.

I shook my head, “Fair enough,” I laughed. “Is the other two awake yet?” I gestured towards the stairs.

“No, not yet. They’ll probably be sleeping all day.”

I nodded, “Yeah, they had too much alcohol last night. I’m surprised you don’t have a bad ass hang over.”

“I didn’t drink that much,” he said. “You disappeared and I was busy looking for you.”

I winced, I couldn’t help but feel a shot of guilt run through me. “Sorry,” I said softly.

“Where’d you even go?” he asked and I couldn’t help but shrink under his blue gaze.

“Outside with Dylan, he was pretty drunk and-“

Jason interrupted, “You were with him the entire time.” It was phrased like a question but sounded like a statement.

I nodded guiltily. I knew that he hated Dylan and I felt like a bad friend for ditching him to talk to his nemesis, who kissed me, which makes it all so much worse. I hung my head in shame.

“Did he say anything?” I asked him cautiously, biting my lip.

“What do you mean?” His question took me by surprise.

“Hey,” Emma burst through the door and saw us frozen in silence. “Am I interuppting something?”

“No.” Jason answered and walked into the kitchen without saying anything else.

“Didn’t seem like it,” Emma whispered to me. “What was going on there? Getting some action from Jason, too?” she wiggled her eyebrows like she had done earlier.

I scowled at her, “Emma! No, just no.”

She shrugged, “Whatever you say.” She grinned.

The three of us, Emma, Jason and I sat awkwardly around the table eating breakfast. I was sat next to Emma and Jason sat opposite us and we ate in silence.

“So...What’s goin’ on?” Emma asked trying to make the situation less awkward but she seemed to make it worse.

“Eating breakfast.” Jason answered plainly not looking up from his plate.

“State the obvious much?” Emma said sarcastically. “Got anything planned for us today, Jase?” Jason looked at her and furrowed his brows. “Yeah, that’s your new nickname.”

Jason nodded. “It’s Sunday,” he replied.

“So? Doesn’t mean we can’t have fun.” Emma insisted.

“Apparently, some of us have too much fun.” He said bitterly, looking straight at me.

Emma looked at me, and I shook my head slightly. “Oh! You mean Aaron and Dylan getting drunk, right. I knew that.” Emma said awkwardly.

I made eye-contact with Jason but he quickly looked away towards Emma. “Yeah, that’s who I meant.”
