Time Away

Telling the kids that Stevie left didn't go too well. They both cried and wanted to know why she left without saying goodbye. Lindsey tried to explain as best he could so they would understand. So he just told them that there was an emergency she had to deal with and that she had to get back to her own life but that she will visit whenever she could.
Lindsey was wreck; he tried to sort out his feelings. He was a mess.
After dropping off the kids at school and placed Stella in her play pen, he called his brother and told him that Stevie had left, what he was feeling and what had happened on her last night in his home.
"Jeff, I feel really...I feel like I cheated on Kristen. That night it just happened. It was...see and this is where I get so confused and feel guilty. It was amazing and...I realize, I'm still in love with Stevie. But, I feel it's wrong because Kristen passed away almost three months ago. I'm a widower and now a single father. I shouldn't be in a relationship right now. I mean what will people think. They'll say things like, "oh well, his wife just died and he moved on quick" They'll think the worst of me." Lindsey said feeling exhausted by the end.
"Lindsey, I can't even imagine what you are going through or know how it feels to lose a wife. I know you loved Kristen but, not to sound heartless, she's gone. And I'll be honest, I knew you have and always will be in love with Stevie. If you feel it's too soon to move on then that's fine and it's understandable. Just some words of advice, you don't have to be in a relationship but don't let Stevie go again. Talk to her and explain what you are feeling. Hopefully, she will wait till you're ready. As far as other people goes, who cares what they think! They don't know your situation. All that matters is your friends and family. We all know what the situation was when you told us about Kristen, we still supported you even though we didn't agree with what you did to Stevie but well, here we are."
Lindsey sighed and spoke to his brother for a bit longer.
After hanging up with his brother, Lindsey picked up Stella and headed down to his home studio. He had already placed a second play pen with a few baby toys in his studio. He put her down and he sat down by the sound board. His mind raced as usual. He put on their record Buckingham Nicks.
After it was over he decided to go over to Stevie's house and lay everything out on the table. He hoped that she wouldn't slam the door in his face.

Stevie landed in Maui and arrived at a rental home that Karen booked. It was by the beach. It was a private beach and Stevie was grateful for that. She had told Karen everything that happened and cried on her shoulder.
Stevie wanted to be alone and gather her thoughts and to re-energize herself.
Karen had her own part of the house and left Stevie alone most of the time until dinner time or whenever Stevie needed something done.

The first week there Stevie cried her heart out. Lindsey's words hurt her deeply and couldn't help but feel like a home wrecker. She couldn't believe she had given into her emotions after years of trying to convince herself that what she felt for Lindsey was locked away in her heart.
After that week, she felt a bit better and spent her energy to focus on herself. She would go for evening walks along the beach as the sun was setting and loving the feeling of sand underneath her feet. She would write in her journal and of course she would write songs; and was glad there was a grand piano at the beach house. She would spend her nights after dinner playing the piano; sometimes she would play old songs and others she would create something new.

Lindsey had gone to Stevie's house that day and found no one home. He called Karen knowing Stevie wouldn't answer him.
Karen told Lindsey that she went on vacation to get away from things for a while but didn't tell him where and that she needed to be alone. Stevie would talk only to her mother and to Christine.

Like Lindsey, she wanted to sort through her feelings as well. There were days where she missed him and the children terribly that it hurt.
But she did her best to be positive and make the best of her time on the secluded beach.

Before they knew it a month and a half had past. Stevie and Karen were still staying in Maui.
And Lindsey had adjusted quickly to being a single father to his three children without Stevie's or anyone's help.
He had called Karen a few more times but always getting the same answer. He stopped calling after a while but he wouldn't give up. He decided to wait a bit and hope that Stevie would come back home soon.

Stevie started to notice a change in herself. She usually slept till noon and would be fine the rest of the day without feeling sleepy or exhausted.
Now, no matter if she slept till noon she would wake up, walk to the bathroom to take a bath or shower and she would be exhausted by the time she returned to her bedroom. She couldn't understand what was going on with her.

Karen walked out of her room to make dinner and noticed Stevie laying on the sofa in the living room.
"Stevie?" Karen asked as she walked up to her. She noticed that Stevie was sleeping.
Karen gently shook her shoulder. "Stevie?"
"Hmmm?" She groaned trying to open her eyes. "Oh, hey Karen. What's going?"
"Are you alright Stevie?"
"Yeah, why?" She replied.
"Well, it's just, you usually go for a walk before dinner and the sun has almost set. Plus, you usually don't nap around this time."
"Oh! I didn't realize I fell asleep. I felt tired and sat down. I...don't know what happened."
Karen had noticed that recently, Stevie had been looking exhausted and how thinner Stevie looked.
Stevie yawned and stood up from the sofa.
She sighed and said looking Karen in her eyes knowing what she was thinking. "I've noticed it too."
"Well, I didn't want to bring it up. You have been looking, well not to offend you but you've been looking like hell lately."
"Usually I would get upset at that but I know it's true. I looked in the mirror today and I do look like hell. And I've noticed other things too." Stevie sighed.
Karen put her hands on Stevie's shoulders and said. "Stevie, what's going on?"
Stevie looked down and chewed on the inside of her cheek, tears appearing in her eyes.
"Stevie?"
"I'm scared to say." She whispered.
Stevie tried to turn to walk away but Karen didn't let her go.
Karen sat her back down on the sofa and sat next to her and waited patiently for Stevie to speak.
"I think...I think I'm pregnant Karen."
"Are you sure Stevie?"
"I'm not for certain but everything points in that direction. I've been hiding this from you but I've been throwing up a lot lately. I've been throwing up so much that I lost weight! Also, my breast are so sore and...they have grown. Most of my bras don't fit anymore! As you know, I've been pregnant before and I know the symptoms."
"Should we head home tomorrow? I can make a quick trip into town and get you a pregnancy test too. Also, I'll make you an appointment with your doctor just to make sure whatever the test says."
Stevie nodded letting a few tears fall. She didn't know how to feel about this. She didn't want to get her hopes up because there was still a possibility that she wasn't pregnant. But if she was, she was terrified that she would lose this baby too. She was sobbing loudly now tears running down her cheeks her head on Karen's shoulder. Karen held her close to comfort Stevie as best she could.
"I'll go make those phone calls, okay? And I'll pack for us after dinner. You know what, since I'm going into town I'll just pick up something to eat. You just lay back down and rest. I'll be back soon."
Stevie nodded again and laid down on the sofa again. She grabbed Karen's hand and said. "Thank you Karen."
Karen gave Stevie's hand a squeeze with a smile and went on her way to make the phone calls she needed to make.

Stevie's head was running a hundred miles an hour. She was 46 years old, turning 47 soon and she may be pregnant. Stevie laughed a humorless laugh and thought to herself that she was almost close to being 50 years old and still had a cycle. Of course, her cycle had began to slow down these past two years and were so irregular but they were there.
She had thought before the vomiting kicked in, that it could have been the early signs of menopause.

A baby was something that Stevie had always dreamed of having; to have a chance to be a mother. She prayed with all her might that she was pregnant and that she would be able to carry this baby to term.
Then her mind went to the baby's father.
"Lindsey!" She thought to herself closing her eyes.
Groaning Stevie got up and went straight into the bathroom and made it in time as she vomited into the the toilet bowl.
After a few minutes, Stevie flushed the toilet and sat back against the bathtub with her eyes closed trying to breath steadily.
She couldn't wait to get home; she wanted to be in her own home again, in her own bathroom and her own bed. She loved it here but felt to horrible to enjoy it anymore.

Karen returned with the test and Stevie took it right away. She came out of the bathroom feeling extremely nervous. She had to wait fifteen minutes till the test was ready.
Karen suggested for them to eat dinner then they would look at the results.
Stevie did her best to eat but she just picked at her dinner not trusting her stomach at the moment.

The timer went off and Stevie stood up and braced herself and went to look at the results.
Holding Karen's hand, Stevie picked up the pregnancy test and looked down.
Tears formed in her eyes and made their way down her cheeks.
There they were; two pinks lines.
