The Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Things were beginning to stack up against Marcy.
The attempted kidnapper gave them all the evidence they needed to get a warrant for Marcy's arrest.
After they took the attempted kidnapper away; Lindsey quickly called his lawyer.

His lawyer immediately had enough evidence against Marcy that when he brought the case to the judge that was to handle the custody case; the judge dismissed it.

Lindsey gave Stevie the good news that they would no longer need to worry about the possibility of Marcy taking their kids away.
Stevie was beyond happy; finally being able to relax and not worry anymore. She cried tears of joy and snuggled with the children before bed that night.

The only thing that they had to get through now was Marcy's trial for the charges of attempted kidnapping.

By that time, Stevie was two weeks into her ninth month.
She was extremely uncomfortable.
The night before Marcy's trial, the baby had kept Stevie up all night.
The baby kept moving, always changing positions. Not even music could keep the baby calm.
Around five in the morning, the baby finally had settled and Stevie was able to get a few hours of sleep.

When Stevie woke up, she could feel a huge difference in her body.
She didn't have to look to know that the baby had settled further down and her stomach was now lower.
She sat up and rubbed her stomach as she arched her back; she just felt a sharp pain shoot through her.
She breathed in and out.
Lindsey had walked out of the bathroom, he had just finished showering.
He looked at Stevie. "Steph, are you alright?"
"I just feel really, really uncomfortable. I think our daughter will be here soon." She sighed. "I can't wait for her to be out of me!"
Lindsey chuckled and walked over to her. "You're almost there angel. We'll be holding her in our arms before we know it." He gave her a kiss on her lips and rubbed her stomach.

He straightened up and sighed a heavy sigh. "Well, let's get this over with. Once today is over, we don't ever have to see Marcy again."

They made their way a little earlier than most to beat the crowd inside the courthouse.
Christine had joined them to support her friends and band mates.
They took a seat in the front of the room and waited.

As the minutes ticked by, Stevie began to feel the sharp pain again. She closed her eyes and breathed.
"Stevie, are you alright?" Christine asked.
"Yes, I'm alright. Just...I felt a sharp pain but I'm it's gone now.." She said trying to sound cheerful.

The courtroom began to fill up and Lindsey was surprised to see that most of Kristen's family sat on his side of the courtroom.
They made their way over to him and hugged him and showed him so much support.
He had tears in his eyes as he thanked them.

Finally, the side doors opened up and Marcy was brought in wearing handcuffs.
She quickly glared at Lindsey then at Stevie, then quickly looked away.

As soon as the judge walked in, he quickly called the court into session and it began.
Both lawyers opened up taking turns speaking.
After Lindsey's lawyer was done, almost everyone was against Marcy.

Evidence was shown and the man Marcy hired spoke against her. He told the courtroom all the details of what he was to do.
"Marcy Messner hired me to kidnap all three of the Buckingham children. I saw the gate open so I went in and hid at first scoping out the place. I only saw two of the children, so I snuck away and found a pay phone and called Marcy, I told her there was only two children outside playing. Marcy told me just to take the two. But boy oh boy, did that little boy know how to kick a grown man's ass. I wasn't expecting that." The courtroom laughed then the judged yelled for order then scolded the man for cursing. "Sorry your honor. But yeah, that kid kicked me in my groin, I hunched over then he kicked me in the face! That's how they got away from me."
Lindsey's lawyer asked a few more questions, then released the man from the witness stand.
Next Lindsey's lawyer had found Emma, she was next on the stand. Lindsey's lawyer wanted to show the jury that Marcy would do everything and anything to disrupt the lives of the Buckingham family.

Emma walked up to the witness stand timidly. When she sat down she immediately looked over to where Lindsey and Stevie were sitting.
Emma felt guilty for putting Stevie through the pain of thinking her husband had cheated on her. She saw Lindsey wrap his arm around Stevie who snuggled closer to him, her eyes closed as if she was in pain, her hand on her huge belly.

Emma began to tell her story of how Marcy had hired her. "Ms. Messner saw me crying outside of the college library. She asked if I was okay and I told her I was a mess because I was in my final year of college and I had a lot of student loans. I didn't know how I was going to pay them. So Marcy, um, Ms. Messner offered to pay off my loans if I did something for her. I didn't want to at first but...I was so overwhelmed I agreed to do it." She took a breath. "My job was to engage with Mr. Buckingham, she told me I didn't have to sleep with him, just to make it seem we were having an affair. She said she would be hiding and waiting ready with a camera to take photos of us. He kept saying that he wasn't interested so I became desperate and just started to kiss him, I grabbed his arms and wrapped them around me and I wrapped my arms around him. Ms. Messner was able to get a few photos before he pulled away." Emma finished speaking and hung her head low. She was crying now and looked up at Lindsey and Stevie.
"I'm so sorry that I did that to the both of you. I...I'm ashamed of myself."
Lindsey just stared ahead as Stevie shed a few tears. She clung to him even tighter.

Now it was Marcy's turn to speak. The whole courtroom was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop.
Marcy sat down and was sworn in.
Lindsey's lawyer walked in front of the witness stand and said "Ms. Messner, would you please explain why you went through so much trouble to disrupt the lives of Lindsey Buckingham and his wife?"

Marcy's face contorted with anger. "Because they don't deserve to be happy! My daughter died and here comes Stevie Nicks to take my daughters place! She hadn't been dead long and he slept that woman..." Marcy said as she pointed at Stevie. "and got her pregnant! Now look at them, happy and married, she becoming a mother to my grandchildren and a child of their own on the way while my daughter lies rotting away under ground! That's why I did what I did; I wasn't going to allow them to be together, I was going to find a way to break them up some way, somehow."
Marcy didn't care anymore; she didn't even care that her lawyer didn't even try to defend her; she told the truth because she didn't care what happened to her. And if she went to prison well so be it she thought to herself.

Stevie couldn't help but tremble as Marcy said those things about her; fresh tears falling down her cheeks.

"Is that why you tried to push Ms. Nicks down the stairs during your granddaughter Stella's first birthday party? You didn't want them to be happy and be together?" Lindsey's lawyer continued his questioning.

"Yes, I followed her upstairs and when she was making her way downstairs I tried to push her, but then my grandson Will saw me and I missed my chance. I wanted them to feel the pain of losing someone they love. I thought if she lost the child they would grow apart and I wanted her to know what it felt like to lose a child!"

Kristen's family were shocked, saddened and angry that Marcy had done all of those things.
They stared wide eyed, mouths hanging open that Marcy would kill an innocent unborn child.

Stevie began to sob louder; Lindsey rocking her back and forth whispering to words of comfort and love to her.

Marcy stepped down from the witness stand after a few more minutes of questioning.
The judge called a recess so the jury would deliberate.

Everyone began to file out; Stevie stood up and grabbed her back that had been killing her for the past few hours. Having the baby so low and sitting on those benches was getting to her.
Plus those sharp pains she had been feeling were beginning to last longer.
But still she didn't say anything to Lindsey. She wanted to be there until the very end.

"Linds, can we go for a walk? I don't know what it is, but I need to move around." Stevie said.
Lindsey held her hand as they walked around inside the courthouse; them not wanting to venture outside.
Christine followed behind having a feeling Stevie was hiding something.

Not even twenty minutes later, the jury was back with the verdict.
They all filed back into the courtroom, sitting in their original spots.

The judge called the session into order and he spoke. "Before the verdict is read, would anyone like to speak, would they like to say anything to Ms. Messner?"
Stevie raised her hand.
"Mrs. Buckingham, you may come up and speak."

Stevie stood up with Lindsey's help and waddled to the witness stand and sat down.

"I just wanted to say, that I am sorry for your loss Marcy. Kristen and I had become great friends. When I heard of her passing, my heart broke. It wasn't my intention to "replace" Kristen as you called it. No one ever  will. Being with Lindsey was the furthest from mind at that time. Three weeks or so after Kristen's funeral, Jeff, Lindsey's brother had called me to ask if it would possible for me to check in on Lindsey and the kids. I did and when I called Jeff back to tell him that Lindsey did need help adjusting to being a single parent, he asked me to stay with him until he was able to stay with Lindsey.
I helped Lindsey with the children getting them into a routine and soon Lindsey was able to handle the children on his own. I did stay a tad longer than I was going to but I did." Stevie stopped as the pain came back. She breathed through it and hid it well. "After overstaying my stay, I realized that, my love for Lindsey was still there. I still loved him, but I knew it was wrong because he had just lost his wife. So, I decided it was time for me to leave. On my last night however, I had nightmare and woke up screaming. Lindsey heard me and ran to the guest bedroom where I was sleeping. He was comforting me and well, you can probably guess what happened next. It wasn't planned. Our emotions were high and it just happened. Weeks later I found out I was pregnant. I feel truly blessed to have this chance of motherhood,  Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, we didn't see this coming. Lindsey and I found our way back to each other and we are never letting each other go again. Having seen what happened to Kristen, we realized that, our lives could be over in the blink of an eye. We didn't want to waste another second apart. And the children continue to remember and talk about Kristen; they will help Lindsey and I tell Stella when she's old enough all the wonderful stories of the mother she will never get to know." Stevie's tears fell fast down her cheeks. "And, Marcy, there was no need to attempt to push me down the stairs in order for me to know what it felt like to lose a child. A while before Lindsey met Kristen, I was pregnant but I miscarried. That was the most painful thing that has ever happened to me. I will never recover from that. So, Marcy, I do know the pain of losing a child. I loved my baby with all my heart and I still think about them until this day and will continue to think about them until the day I die." Stevie was sobbing uncontrollably now.
The judge handed her a tissue.
"Thank you." She whispered. "Can I...get down now? I...can't...anymore."

The judge excused Stevie from the stand and she made her way back to Lindsey who had tears falling down his cheeks too.
He opened his arms as she sat down and hugged him tightly.

Everyone in the courtroom was crying even Marcy; who was now feeling remorse for all she had done. She let her grief and anger mask what was really going on and she realized that she had judged Stevie way too harshly.
Moments later Marcy was found guilty and was sentenced to ten years in prison and was taken away through the side door she had entered.

Stevie and Lindsey breathed a sigh of relief.  They hugged, kissed each other and smiled from ear to ear. It was over; Marcy's terror was finally over.
"Linds, let's go home. I'm really tired."

Once at home, Stevie walked in and was engulfed in hugs and kisses from the children.
Even though she was exhausted she sat in the living room on the sofa with them, Lindsey by her side as the children talked her ear off. She laughed and was enjoying every moment.

Just then she gasped and cried out as she held her stomach as the pain she had been feeling all day felt like it was ten times worse now.
"Mommy are you okay?" Will asked worriedly.
Stevie tried to breath through the pain. "Yes my sweet boy, I think...the baby...might be coming...soon. Linds? Help me up."
Lindsey pulled her up and before he could say anything, Stevie felt a gush of warm liquid run down her leggings.
They both stared wide eyed and they knew it was time to head on over to the hospital.
