Introduction

My name is Mal and I am new at songwriting.  I have been writing a song for about a few months now, not just because I was taking that long, it was just a side project that I been working on for a couple of months.  I haven't been able to write it in a while, because I was helping my bestie, Kim with finding a job for dancing.  She went to a college in California for a four year program, to teach choreography to young students.  She lived in a dorm at the time, one of the biggest dorms that I ever seen.  It was a very tall building that had about four floors.  It looked like a regular dorm building, but it ended up being a fancy hotel styled dorm on the inside.  It had nice stain glass windows of different styles of dancing.  Her dorm room had a ballerina, twirling around in a circle by the looks of it. I would go there to visit her at times, and I would once in a while spend a weekend with her, but that was before I got into song writing.  I live with my parents still, because I didn't get my career to fully go into action. I have no trainig in any schooling, just written stuff from the top of my head.  I used to walk into the woods or by the lake to get my ideas, but seeing how it's winter here up north, I couldn't exactly do that.  So I've been having a hard time writing a song.

I have a bag of writing stuff that I collected from the nearest music store in town, but not much to say that I have a career in it.  I have a bunch of notebooks with different bridges of songs that I written in the past, but haven't got around to finishing them.  Most of the songs I write were about my family and closest friends, but I have written other stuff too.  My dream was to write for a popular band, and help their career grow.  I loved to help people in need when it came to that.  Every once in a while , I would write a guitar piece for my dad, which he always played for the town.  My dad thought I could send my song to a famous producer to look at, but I always was scared to at first, except now.  Now was the time that I would get the guts to send a piece of work out to someone.  I am finishing the final products on a song that I've been working on for a few months.  It was nothing at first, just a guitar piece to start off with. I shown Kim it a few times in the process, but not an complete piece.  I didn't have a title to the song yet, but it's about how Kim and I went to college together and became best friends.  I sighed as I stopped typing, trying to think of the next line to my song when my phone rings.  I pick it up to read a message from Kim.  She wanted to meet somewhere for lunch soon.  I sighed as I looked at my clock as it read 11:30.

I pondered on the text for a moment.   By the time I picked her up and went to get lunch, I would be hungry enough.  Lunch is probably why I was having a hard time with the song.  Maybe I should take a break, then come back to it.  I sighed as I looked at my song, seeing that I still needed more to it.  "I guess I can have a break" I said, as I texted Kim back. Lunch it is.  I sighed as I looked at the song lyrics, then shut my computer down, and left the desk.  I grabbed my sneakers as I slipped them on, grabbed my keys and left the room.  When I got to the kitchen, my mom was sitting at the table, filling out some papers and looking through the mail.  "I'm  having lunch with Kim. I'll be home later" I said, as I slipped on my boots.  My mom looked at me from the table as she spoke. "Oh. Lunch with Kim will be good. Have a break for a while" she said, as she looked back at her work.  I zipped the sides of my boots as she spoke again. "By the way.  How's the new song coming?" she asked as I sighed.  It's coming out slowly.  I've been in  a slump all day. Kim said that a break would be good, so we're going out for lunch" I said, as my mom looked at me.  "Kim is good about getting you out.  It'll be good to get lunch together.  Different for you, seeing how you never eat out" she said, as I nodded. "Yeah, I don't know where we're eating at yet" I said as I started to put on my coat.  I looked in my bin that I kept my mail  in as I looked around.  "Hmm. Where did it go?  I know I had it in here somewhere" I said, as my mom turned around.  "What are you looking for Mal?" She asked as I sighed. "I finished a song a few days ago. It was in a envelope and I stuck it in here.  But it wasn't ready to be mailed yet.  I'm still working on it."

My mom looked up as she turned to me. "The one about how you should keep your close friends close to you as family?" she asked as I sighed. "Yeah, that one.  I still needed to edit it." I looked at my mom as she looked at the pen in her hand.  I sighed as I folded my arms and looked at her.  "Mom, did you by any chance send it out to that place?" I asked her as she looked at me.  "I did.  I didn't know that it was still under edit and I sent it out to a producer already. I'm sorry Mal. It looked done" she said, as I sighed.  "I wasn't done with the song" I said, as she sighed. "Sorry. Next time, I won't mail it out unless you give me permission.  I'm really sorry, I didn't know that you were still working on it" she said, as I sighed. "It's fine.  I'm going now.  Hopefully it can come back to me unfinished" I said, as I opened the door and left.  I got into the car as I texted Kim, stating that I was on my way.  I drove over to the nearest town to get her, then we got to the restaurant closest to her.  There was not a lot of people in  the restaurant.  It was just a little place that served breakfast and lunch. I got the soup of the day, which was tomato. Kim got a burger and fries, with a drink.  I wasn't thirsty so I didn't get a drink.  I sighed as I sipped my soup.  "Mal, what's wrong?  You look upset" Kim said, as I looked at her.  "It's nothing.  My mom just mailed the song I was working on to a producer" I said, as Kim looked at me.  "Was it the song that you still needed to edit a bit?" she asked as I nodded.  "Yeah.  I wasn't done with it. She thought it was the final draft and I was working on something else.  I put it in my mail bin, and she thought it was done" I said, as I sipped another spoonful of soup. Kim sighed as she spoke. "Well, hopefully it comes back, knowing that it wasn't finished" she said, as I sighed.  Kim slammed her hand on the table as she spoke. "Dude, did I tell you?" she asked as I looked at her. "Tell me what?" I asked as she spoke. "You know that choreography job that I applied too?" she asked as I nodded.  "Yeah, what about it?" I asked as she clapped her hands in excitement. "I got it.  I'm being flown out to LA to work with the pop group, Idolish7. I can't wait" she said, as I almost choked on my soup.  "OH MY GOODNESS! YOU DIDN'T!" I yelled at her as she nodded. "I'm going to be their chorographer. The producer is going to pick me up in a few days" she said as she screeched in excitement.  I smiled as I took a sip of my milk.

"That's great.  I'm so proud of you. I hope you have fun and teach them a lot of dancing" I said, as she sighed. "But, their coming to pick me up in a few day.  I'm leaving to go to Hollywood with them" she said, as I looked at her.  "So, you have a few days before you leave?" I asked as she nodded. "Yeah. So in the next few days, we have to hang as much as possible" she said, as I smiled. "Always. When you get going, we'll keep in touch" I said, as we started to finish our meals.  At the end of our meal, we paid and left the restaurant.  I went to start the car as my phone rang.  I looked seeing a number that I didn't recognize.  "Mal, who's that?" Kim asked as I sighed. "I dunno. Give me a moment" I said, as I picked up the phone. "Hello?" I asked as a man spoke. "Hello, is this Mal?" he asked as I looked at Kim.  "This is her" I said, as the man sighed in relief. "Hello. My name is Otoharu Takanashi and I'm calling about your song here" he said, as I thought to myself for a moment.  I nodded as I spoke. "Oh the one about having friends being family" I said, as I sat back in my seat.  "Yes. Anyway, I like to see if you can come in for a meeting.  My band is looking for a new songwriter and I would like to ask you a few things" he said, as I nodded. "Um yeah. I can meet with you" I said, as I looked at Kim.  She smiled as she gave me a thumbs up.  "Great. Does this afternoon around two work?" he said, as I looked at the time saying noon.  "Yeah, two would be great" I said, as Kim smiled and tried to hold back a laugh.  "Perfect.  So I'll be seeing you at two?" he asked as I nodded. "Yes you will. See you at two" I said, as he hung up the phone.  I locked my phone and put it back into my pocket.  "So you got an interview?" Kim asked as I nodded. "Yeah.  So I might have to run back to my house, and grab my song.  Even though it's not finished" I said, as she smiled.

Kim looked at me as she spoke. "Dude, do you know who that was?" she asked as I looked at her.  "Uh, it was a man" I said, as she laughed.  "That was the man that I got hired for the choreography job" she said, as I looked at her. "That was the producer for Idolish7?" I asked. She clapped her hands as she nodded. "Yeah.  If you get hired with him, we'll be working together." I laughed a bit. "Man, they wouldn't know how to control us" I said, as she spoke. "I know right."  I sighed as I spoke. "So we should head that way if we were going to be there on time.  I got to find his office that might take a while" I said, as I started my car.  "I'm going to stop by my house, and grab my folder.  I might need it" I said, as Kim nodded. "That's fine, we have time" she said, as we headed to my house.

I walked in my room as I grabbed my folder.  I looked in the folder to make sure the whole song was there.  I huffed as I spoke. "I hope he doesn't mind that it's unedited" I said, as Kim sighed. "It's going to be fine" she said, as I looked at her. "What if it's not good for him?" I asked as she pointed her finger at me. "That will not get you a job.  Now come on. We should head out" she said, as I looked down at myself. "How do I look?" I asked as she smiled. "Just fine. Now come on. It's almost time for your interview" she said as I looked at myself in the mirror. "I'm ready" I said, as we started to head out.  When we got into the kitchen, my mom stopped us. "Where you girls going?" she asked as I looked at Kim. "I have to go to an interview.  Kim's coming with me. I'll be home soon" I said, as my mom nodded. "Good luck. Let me know what happens" she said, as I nodded. "I will" I said, as I looked at Kim. "You ready?" I asked, as she looked at me.  "Ready when you are" she said, as I sighed. "Let's go before I'm late" I said, as I walked out first, with Kim following right behind me.
