Chapter Three: The Three Thieves (Unedited, Sorry)
"Five, won't kill you but still a fail. You observe—" Awgy grabbed my head with magic pushing me down. "The ground."
The dice spun as I grumbled several curses. The ground? Really? What the fuck kind of a game was this where bad rolls meant you'd become bored by staring at the ground for hours?
"Kitty, you got a one, damn, so unlucky," Awgy muttered, flinging magic toward her.
Kitty's fairy wings fluttered, her eyes wide. "What does that mean? Nia-love—"
Like an idiot, I jumped in the way of the magic. One of my legs twisted despite my strong landing and stance, as if it was controlled by something else. "Shit! Really?"
Awgy sighed heavily, throwing her arms up in a huff. "That was meant for Kitty, you're going to ruin the game. . . Are you okay?"
"No! I'm not okay! My damn leg is busted and you are trying to hurt my girlfriend because of a damn dice number? How the hell would I be okay?" I spat, putting the weight off my throbbing leg.
The witch looked at me with pity. "Well you can roll to fix it."
I let out a sharp laugh. "I'm not trusting that cursed dice. Someone kill me so I can come back normal." Whatever normal is for a centaur. . .
"I want to roll to fix Nia," Kitty whispered as she fluttered next to me, placing her miniature hand in mine. "I don't know what to say. Why would you do that?"
"I didn't want you to get hurt. I know this is a game but I intend to protect you anyway," I stated, smiling to distract her from my pain-filled expression. This was the shittiest game in existence I swear. At least in sports injury wasn't random, unpredictable at times but not to this extent. I swallowed, watching as the dice slowed to a halt on fifteen. God. Now I felt bad for what I did to seth. I didn't realize he would have felt it this much.
The dice went to Seth who booped it with his shield nose. It stopped on six.
"Seth, you observe. . ." Awgy flew over to a tree and set him next to it like dropped something horrible and gross. "This tree. It's a very nice tree."
Ayah rolled the dice next. It hit four.
"Oh look, you have feet!" Awgy exclaimed, before slightly shoving Ayah who tripped over a rock. "And stubbed your pinkie toe."
"Get back here you little—" Ayah growled, circling fire daggers along behind her.
"No, no." Awgy swirled her hand and the daggers fell to the ground. "No attacking the DM."
"Or what?" Lorraine asked. "You'll be meaner? Honey, you're talking to the queen of mean, there's not a lot you can do to surprise me." She flicked her red hair over her shoulder, splashing her gold and dark blue scaled tail in the water behind her.
"Worse, actually," Awgy muttered. Clearing her throat, all the light of fun that had been present disappeared. "If I die, you'll never leave."
"Then let us go now!" Gabby cried, an odd amount of panic leaking into her voice. "I have kids, and dogs, and cats—Awgy I can't risk getting stuck in here, what will happen to my boys?"
Me and Kitty remained silent as everyone else started arguing intensely with the DM. So that's how it was. Complete the game to get out, or never get out at all.
"Kitty," I whispered, allowing her to stand on the palm of my hand. "I promise we're going to get out of here, okay?"
Nodding, she looked up at me. "I love our friends but, the next time they try to intrude on our specially set aside time together, let's lock the door and pretend we aren't home."
I laughed. "Sounds good to me."
The sound of hooves hitting sand stole my focus above the arguing as everyone else continued to fail their perception checks. Tufts of curls or fury something's came into my line of vision by the tree Seth had been set next to.
Three figures clad in stereotypical fantasy clothes went around the group, completely unnoticed by anyone, coming away with weapons and money.
"Nia—"
I covered Kitty's mouth with my finger gently, continuing to observe until the sneaky thieves grabbed Seth and ran. "Shit."
"Kitty, stay here, I'm going after the robbers," I stated, getting to my feet and going to twirl the trident in my fingers. It too was gone. Dammit! I grabbed a stick that had washed up on the shore, and ran—galloped? After them.
A sparkle of golden dust shone in the corner of my eye as I went deeper into the island, through brush, vines, and trees. It was clear Kitty had no intent of being left behind. Ducking, dodging, and leaping over whatever got in our way, we followed the thieves far enough behind not to be seen, but not close enough to do anything. I had no idea what those weird looking sheep people were. What if they were poisonous? But—I couldn't lose sight of Seth. If I did, he could be lost, forever
