September. A month of renewal, for both nature and man. Renewal in the sense that leaves are falling, in order to make way for new ones. Also in the perspective that it's the first month of school!
As I get off my bike, Ed and John, my two best and only friends, stroll by the maple trees. Those are the very trees which we've planted in kindergarten, climbed on in elementary, and picked lush apples from last year. I hadn't seen them since school in June.
I join them in their walk and engage in conversation. They look exhausted, as if they'd had an all-nighter, which is strange, because they normally are extremely organized and prepared for almost everything.
Starting off, I greet them, "Hey Ed, John. Nice to see you guys! It's been nearly three months, how were your summers?"
Before either of them can answer, a sedan comes rushing past us, nearly flattening a couple students.
Of course, it's the troublemakers. They're so... gross. I don't even have the words.
I get it, they're hypocrites. Those 'bad boys' (not my preferred nickname, it was made by the popular girls, but I'll get to them later) can't even drive, but I've seen the 'head knucklehead' do some test drives around the neighbourhood. Let's just say it didn't end well.
Shouting, loud, crude music is what emits from the car. As you can tell from the nickname, they like to cause havoc. Once, they made a teacher so irritated that he had a stroke, and started joking about it as it happened. It wasn't until half an hour later when the emergency services arrived, due to their idiocy and carelessness. The boys involved got suspended, but they didn't care, as always.
I realise that Ed and John have futilely attempted to get my attention for probably five minutes. And that I'm standing in the middle of the pavement. How humiliating.
"Kyle, you in there? Stop daydreaming, you're blocking the way!" John shouts, breath and spit flying into my face.
Confused, I ask, "Woah. What just happened?'
"I don't know, but you certainly weren't aware," Ed answers.
I guess I got so engulfed in my thoughts that everything just stopped. Strange.
Anyways, I have to get to the office. Even though there's still an hour before students are meant to go in, I still need to stay inside and prepare for opening the school doors, because I'm the student council president.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
My peers all look so dead and tired. It's the first day of school, shouldn't it be the opposite? As I open the doors, students rush in like a floodgate has just been opened. There's endless chatter all around.
Some of my old classmates smile and wave, but others just sulk and shuffle in. A girl catches my eye. Her name's Hermione, if I can recall correctly. She's pretty nice, and smart too, but I didn't share any classes with her last year. I'm pretty sure I have some with her too. It'd be good to make some new acquaintances.
As the amount of students swarming in dissipates, I begin to get to class. After all, why be a student council president when you aren't on time?
Looking at my schedule, I realize that maths is first. What a bore. Better get it done and over with. At least I have homeroom first, class 3A.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The classroom is appallingly disgusting. The once clean, perfect walls are now a stained yellow colour. And I do not want to know what the brown muck on the wall is. I should report this to the student council, or maybe even the principal. Our classrooms need to be taken better care of. Waving to my new homeroom teacher, Mr. Peter, I scan the classroom for friendly faces. Hermione, Grace, Sarah, Chris, and John are some of the few people whom I recognise, but Ed is nowhere to be seen. He probably got sorted into one of the other classes, unfortunately. The rest of the people I barely know.
New year, new start, new friends, old drama. I can already tell that this year will be a memorable one.
