Chapter 5 Megan
"What was the name you just said?"
"Megan is dead," Matt repeated.
"Megan, she is my sister," Lucille replied.
"Your sister?"
"Yes, mine."
"I am ever so sorry for your loss then."
"Thank you, but I can not remember her much. I feel so ashamed."
"Well, I am not surprised. She told me you had not spoken in years. I am surprised she did not know it was you when she insisted on letting you ride with us."
"I am not. I have changed much over the years. I used to have blonde hair, but it turned this red over time."
I could tell she was upset because of the way she tugged at her hair.
I tried my best not to stress her out.
I missed Megan, too. She was my fiance.
Despite my grief, I felt sorry for the young lady who turned out to be Megan's sister.
What could I do to help her?
I must not leave her here to grieve alone.
I was determined when it was time for me to leave she would go along with me.
I am sure that is what Megan would have wanted.
"Listen, Lucille, or whatever your name is, Megan loved you. I know because she spoke highly of you."
I saw her nod her head.
"I also, know that she wouldn't have wanted you to be alone."
"Yes, so?" I saw her shrug her shoulders as she spoke that time.
"So, I suggest you go with me to meet my parents once this whole thing is behind us."
I could see her hesitate as if it were the furthest thing on her mind. I watched her tense up, frown, and then scowl.
"Matt, I could not possibly impose."
"Impose, nonsense, why you are practically family."
"Fine, I will go. Don't expect me to enjoy myself."
"When is your birthday?"
"I beg your pardon."
" Megan's was January 7, so when is yours?" Matt asked me.
"July 7."
"Hmm, interesting,"
"When is yours? Is only fair I know yours since I told you mine."
"April 18th."
"I see," I heard Lucille say.
How come her voice brought me comfort?
Why was it I was afraid she would shut up and I would remain alone in the world?
I did not tell her my thoughts. That would be silly.
"Megan was always the smart one."
"Na, she was the pretty one."
"Fine, she was the smart and pretty one. Not me, I am just an average plain, Jane. Plain oh, plain as they come."
I wonder what brought that on. I couldn't see why she tore herself down. She was far from plain and even the male nurse took an interest in her.
I would not let him hurt her. I was determined for Megan's sake and mine to protect her.
The story continues in Chapter 6
Until then, bye-bye, little owlets!
Summer out!
