Chapter 6

———
Sometime passed and Becky found herself sleeping on the hard wooden floor of the Butcher's home. Lil Mittens slept near her head.

She woke up to the sound of the door closing. She was groggy and partially unaware since waking up.

"Mom? Dad? Did you come back?", she yawned for a moment.

Then she realized she was on the floor and became confused, until she remembered and slumped forward.

"Oh, right... Mr. Butcher?", she muttered.

"What uh... are you doing in the floor? The couch is softer.", he said.

"Oh... I didn't want to get it dirty. I'm sorry I used your bathroom.... And ate some leftover meatloaf.... All of the leftover meatloaf....I'm really sorry... and it's on the floor instead of in.", she turned her head to look at the floor.

The Butcher crouched on to the floor and slid a paper bag in between them.

"You don't need to apologize, I already said that it's okay. I can always get the couch cleaned anyway! Lil Mitten's fur gets everywhere ya know?", he smiled.

She takes a curious glance at the bag, it had Granny May on it with lots of glitter.

"....", she tightens her lips and grips the floor a bit.

"How were your errands?", she asked.

"I uh got them all done! And!! While I was at it, I thought I'd get you something too!! As a bonus for doing a good job watching Lil Mittens!", The Butcher waved his hands a round with excitement.

She scooted back a bit, waking Lil Mittens. The Butcher grimaced apologetically. He held his hand in front of him.

"Sorry! I just thought it was a good idea! You don't have to take it if you don't want it! I got a bit of help pick'em out.", he amended.

Lil Mittens sauntered over to greet the Butcher before going back to Becky's side. Lil Mittens purred soothingly.

"I...don't want to get them dirty....but thank you.", she said.

After some more coaxing, Becky took a look at what was in the bag and picked an outfit to wear after a shower.

The clothes were a size or two too big, but they felt nice. There was a coat. It made her tremble as she held it. It was pink with a golden fur trim and little blue stars, it came with a brown belt.

"Do you like it?", the butcher asked.

He became alarmed when she began to cry again.

"Oh no, you hate it! I'm sorry! I wish I had a better fashion sense.", he said.

"No no... I love it. I love it a lot! Thank you! Thank you so much!", she gave him a hug.

He pat her on the shoulder.

"Well, it's still kind of late, so why don't you get to bed? I'll put this in the wash for you.", he gets the couch ready.

"Before I forget, here's your pay for watching Lil Mittens and the house.", he handed her some money, "Now sleep well."

The next morning, she was gone. He half expected it and half hoped she stayed.

Granny May explained that kids like her don't trust easy and don't take being told what to do well. She said that street kids don't trust adults the most, especially the ones enforcing law.

At least she knows who she can go to for temporary shelter and a meal right? If he could prove he won't hurt her, maybe she'll come back?

She never came back.
