Chapter 29 (Edited)
"I'm sorry that you didn't get anything else, other than where not to go," Deputy McCarthy said, scratching his head.
I shrugged my shoulder. "It's not your fault," I said, taking off the pass and handing it to him. "At least, I'm starting to accept that I'm not a normal human being and that I'm not from this dimension."
Deputy McCarthy nodded his head, as he took the pass from me. He took a bite of it, cocking his head. "So what are you going to do about learning things that you have known but forgotten?" Some of the pass spittle flew out of his mouth, making me cringe.
I shrugged my shoulder. "Learn what I can on the road," I replied. "Hopefully, when I get my memory back, then I'll remember how to do everything. I know how to freeze stuff, but that's only when my anger gets out of control."
Laura collected the rest of the passes and placed them on the desk. She had been quieter than usual, and it made me nervous.
"Laura?" David asked, also, noticing that she had quiet. "Are you all right?"
Laura nodded her head, as she straightened the passes out. "I-I'm fine," she said, swatting at Deputy McCarthy's handm as he reached for one of them. "You're not supposed to eat them, remember?"
"Hey," he said, rubbing his hand. However, he didn't take another one of the passes.
"So, I'm guessing you're not human," I inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"I am too human or part human." Deputy McCarthy replied. He stood straight up and puffed out his potbelly stomach, proud of his heritage. "I'm-"
"We'll talk about that later," David said, interrupting him. "We have to get going." He glanced at me, raising an eyebrow. "You said so yourself, "I'm worried about my people"."
I nodded my head and glanced at Laura, before I looked back at Deputy McCarthy. "David said that there is not a way to kill W's. Is that true?"
Deputy McCarthy shrugged his shoulder. "W's are all ready dead," he said. "And they can't be killed again. However, there is a way to stun them or make them go back to the shadows, where they belong."
David's jaw tightened. "I thought Adele said that you can't use them anymore. She said that they were "poisonous to the people if they are hit by the bullet"." He raised an eyebrow.
Deputy McCarthy didn't say anything, as he went behind the desk. He pulled out a bottle that looked like it should be filled with some of that breath mist spray, people spray in their mouths.
"Joe," David warned. "Why are you using that stuff, and how many Huyters died because of you using it?"
"Well, no Huyters died. They just have what looks like a bad burn. Besides, it heals in a couple of hours," Deputy McCarthy said.
"What are you talking about and what the hell is a Huyter?" I asked.
"Humans with non-magical blood and don't believe in myths," Deputy McCarthy said, with a slight hiss. "They just see what they want to see, and we have to keep hidden."
"So, they can't see what's on your head?" I asked, pointing where his horns were.
"Of course they can't," he said. "What would they say if they knew that I was a-"
"Oh, let's not go there, again," David said, interrupting him, again. "But please, tell me what do you mean about Huyters being burned? And, how do you know that it won't kill them?" David asked.
"Well, we've tried it on a few different occasions," Deputy McCarthy said. "And you Watchers would've known if you'd been watching." He held up the bottle for him to see it. Up close, it looked like one of those pepper spray bottles. But don't they have the same design, as mouth spray? "We learned that it was the saliva from the mouth that killed the Huyters. So, we started experimenting with the different parts of the body and found out that the blood and the skin are dangerous only to the W's and will just leave a nasty burn on Huyters. Add a bit of Linthing and Anamara's Dew, and you get the liquid in this bottle. Put some in a silver bullet, and you can stun or cause pain to them."
I blinked, as he said Anamara's Dew. I remembered that. I could picture a flower that my mother had given me, but it was faint. "Anamara is a flower from Angesia. Isn't it?"
David nodded his head. "Yes," he said. He glanced at Deputy McCarthy. "But how did you test it out?"
"It was simple," he said. He glanced at the clock. "But... it's almost time for visiting hours, so you four should probably get going. You all don't want to raise suspicions."
David frowned, but he nodded his head. "All right," he said. "Let's have the weapons so that we can go."
Deputy McCarthy nodded his head and gave the weapons to David. "And for you, Miss..."
"Katarine," I said, seeing him struggle to call me something. "It's my... uh... it's my real mother's name. I don't know how I remember it, when I don't even remember my last name."
"For you, Miss Katarine, a special made pistol."
"Uh, I have to sign a veto against that," David said, as he started to reach for the gun from him. "Ralph and Ei- Katarine are too young and too immature to have any weapons."
"Oh, really?" I asked. I walked over to them, folding my arms across my chest. I watched as Deputy McCarthy held the gun close to him, while David tried to grab it. "I'm not responsible. Haven't you learned anything from watching me sleep?"
"Watching you sleep is nothing to do with this, Eir-"
"It's Katarine and oh my Gods, you've been watching me sleep, both of ya'll. You are both perverts," I said. I shook my head, not knowing if should either be amused or disgusted.
"It's not like that," Ralph said, looking at me. He looked at David. "And she does need a gun. She is the PC, and that's a high responsibility."
"And we have to go..." I tapped my finger to my chin. "Oh, now what did I say? Oh yes, I want to save my people from an evil person, while he is trying to kill me. And, you're not going to let me have any protection against him and his minions. Besides, I've shot guns before, and I know how to handle them."
Something in David's eyes changed, as I said those words. I guess he didn't know if he could trust me or not. Finally, he sighed and held his head in defeat. "Hand me the gun," he muttered, looking at the floor. His hand was outstretched, wanting it.
Deputy McCarthy hesitated and glanced at me, apologetically. He sighed and handed the gun to him.
David took the gun and started to check everything, before he looked at me. "W's need to be either shot in the nose or where the heart is supposed to be," he said, handing the gun to me. "There are six-"
"Uh, seven. They're also smaller than what you're used to," Deputy McCarthy interrupted. "They look like pellets of a BB Gun."
David looked at Deputy McCarthy, annoyed, before continuing. "There are seven bullets in the gun and, you don't need to use them all to make the W's scream."
I nodded my head, taking the gun from him. "If I put some bullets in the bag, then shouldn't I be able to get more?"
Deputy McCarthy shrugged his shoulder. "I don't know," he replied, truthfully. "But to add onto what David was saying, only use the gun when you are not surrounded by a lot of W's. If you are surrounded by a lot W's, then the best bet is to use this." He handed me the pepper spray bottle thing.
I nodded my head. I stuffed the pepper spray in my pocket and placed the gun in my pants, hiding it with my shirt. "Well, is that it?"
Deputy McCarty nodded his head. "Well, you four best be going. There isn't a lot of time."
I nodded my head. "All right. Let's go."
David nodded his head. "We'll be seeing you around, Joe," he said, shaking the officer's hand. "Good to see you again." With that he turned and walked outside, with the rest of us following him.
