8. Safe and Sound.

As soon as the water drained, Diego leapt off the rock and went looking for his mate. The others decided to help too, after they saved Sid from a pack of multicolored mini sloths.

Diego asked everyone he could if they had seen another tiger, but kept getting the same response. He couldn't lose hope.

"She wasn't too far ahead of us," Ellie told him as they closed in on him. "If we were able to see the boat, she must have too." Ellie looked back in the direction they had come from, and Diego sprinted off, not listening to Manny's calls.

Diego restlessly looked under every tree and rock he could move to try and find Kiara, but kept coming up empty handed. He was about to turn back, Manny in his sights, until he heard a roar and went off towards it.

He found it coming from a fallen tree, and pushed past the leaves and branches to come inside a cave. Kiara was lying at the end, her back to him. Diego sighed and smiled relieved as he went to her.

"Kiara..."

She sniffled as she turned to him, but Diego didn't mind. At least she was alive.

"Diego?" She called him, and he slowly went around to face her.

"What's wrong? Are you hurt? Are you..." Diego shut up when he noticed what she was holding.

Kiara noticed it too, and poked it with her muzzle.

"She won't cry!" Kiara whined.

Diego lowered his face and licked at the cub's head, clearing the baby goo from her ears.

"Come on, baby," Diego prodded her.

Kiara nudged her again, but she still didn't budge.

Anxious and scared, and testing a plan, Diego let out an echoing roar. The cub stirred in discomfort but her parents ecstatically smiled. They roared in harmony until their little one joined in.

"Oh, I see," Kiara finally eased up, staring gently at the baby that had just come out of her. "Mommy does all the hard work and daddy gets the love?"

"She's daddy's girl already," Diego nuzzled her, smiling proudly. "And speaking of you, you got me."

"I don't know, I could be a heavy responsibility," she teased him.

Diego knocked her head with his. "Good thing I love you, then."

Kiara stared at him, and Diego realized it was the first time he'd said that. Kiara smiled and licked his check.

"I love you too," she rested her head against his, staring down at their daughter.

"Did you know?"

"Not until she was coming out of me." Kiara lifted her head, alert. "Diego, she's so tiny!" She voiced her concern.

"Well, we can't call her tiny for life," Diego joked to ease the tension.

"Yeah? What are we gonna call her?"

"Diego! Kiara!" Sid's voice cried out to them, coming closer to the cave.

"Why do you get to be first?"

"Because I'm the best!" Diego teased.

"Riigght," Kiara brushed him off. "So, what should we call her? How about, Kiago?"

Diego cringed at the suggestion.

"You're right. Kiadara!"

"I think you've used that head too much."

"Yeeaah, like I haven't just given birth out of the blue, huh!? What do you suggest?"

"How bout, Diara?"

The baby cooed at that and the doting parent sabers smiled down at her.

"It's perfect," Kiara nuzzled her face against Diara. "But I get to name the next one."

"Next one?" Diego repeated shockingly, jumping up on his feet.

Kiara chuckled. "Well, yeah. You're my mate, aren't you?" She pushed him.

"Yes, I am!" Diego proudly said, locking her head against his.

"Hey, everything alright in there?" Manny asked from right at the cave's mouth.

Kiara smiled at Diego. The mammoth and the sloth were practically brothers for Diego.

"Perfect! We'll be right out!" Diego answered them.

Diego moved to grab his daughter in his mouth but Kiara blocked him, worried.

"She's too little," Kiara sounded wounded.

Diego dropped the cub and licked his mate.

"You're right. We'll just go out to the edge, and I'll part the curtains so they can see."

Kiara nodded and picked up Diara in her mouth, following Diego to the mouth of the cave. She flopped down again, tired from the walk already, and placed her cub protectively in her arms. Diego smiled at her and she nodded okay before Diego pulled back the leafy curtain.

"You guys sure took your time in-" Ellie poked Manny with her trunk as they all saw Kiara.

"Aww, it's a baby!" Sid sighed.

The herd gathered around, with the smaller three coming closer to the baby.

"It's your uncle Sid, here to see you!" Sid moved closer, making grabby hands at her.

When she didn't open her eyes, Sid was heartbroken.

"It's not your fault, Sid." Diego explained.

"She won't open her eyes for a couple of days."

"She?" Crash asked.

"Odd name, don't you think?" Eddie continued.

"That's not her name, doofus!" Ellie bonked her brother with her trunk.

"Diara. Her name's Diara," Kiara told them.

"Welcome to the herd, baby Dia," Manny said.

Their celebration was highlighted by a sound of trumpets, but it didn't come from Ellie or Manny. They all turned to see a herd of mammoths approaching from the other side of the glacier.

"Whoa! We're not the last ones anymore!" Ellie jumped in excitement to see others of her kind. Without thinking, she ran off to join their march, but stopped when she noticed she was alone. Ellie looked back towards the gang and walked towards them.

Manny walked up to her.

"You're not coming?" Ellie asked.

"You wanna go with them?" Manny asked, standing between his biological herd, and the herd he'd made with his friends.

"I am a mammoth. I should probably be with a mammoth, don't you think?"

"Yeah," Manny agreed. "Unless..."

"Unless?" Ellie looked on expectantly.

"Unless. I, ah, I just wanna say," Manny stuttered. "I need to tell you..." he looked at her, but lost his courage. "I hope you find everything you're looking for!"

"You, too," she said sadly, and turned back towards the mammoths, her brothers joining shortly.

"Manny?" Sid approached him. "You've come a long way since we met, and I'll take full credit for that, but you need to let go of the past, so you could have a future!"

Manny looked towards Ellie.

"Go after her," Diego joined him. "It's okay. We'll always be here for you."

Manny looked to his friends and back at Kiara. She nodded smiling.

"I'll keep in touch," Manny promised, inspired.

"Yeah, yeah. You're a good friend, point made. Now, go on, scat!"

Manny didn't need further encouragement and went after his mate.

"Ellie!" He called until he got her attention, and she turned back.

"Manny!" Ellie came back looking for him, and was surprised when he hung upside down a tree.

"Ellie, I don't want us to be together because we have to! I want us, to be together because we want to! And I wanna be with you, Ellie! So, what do you say?"

"Oh, Manny, I thought you were going to let," he fell before she could finish and Ellie laughed, using her trunk to lift the tree off him. "You're possum enough for me!"

"Our Manny's all grown up!" Sid tearfully commented to Diego as the tiger headed back to his own family.

"You're next, buddy!" Diego teased him as he sat beside Kiara in the cave.

"Nah! You know what? I think I'll stay single for a while," Sid announced, as if he was making the decision deliberately. "Start a swimming class: Sid's Squids."

"Yeah?" Kiara laughed. "And where are you going to get your learners from?"

"I don't know," Sid shrugged and sat down next to Dia, who sneezed.

"Aww, isn't that just adorable."

They all looked up to find Manny and Ellie.

"B-but, your herd's leaving?" Diego asked.

"Ah, let them!" Manny complained as he sat down next to the cave.

"This spot looks nice enough," Ellie sat next to him and Crash and Eddie reclined in her tusks.

"If I have to walk another step...

I'm gonna have a meltdown."
